Premiere Watch: Song of the Bandits

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Action, historical
Episode count: 9

Reasons to watch: Netflix’s next original series takes us back to the 1920s during the Japanese occupation, but we’re one-upping the freedom fighter motif with Old West-style bandits. With Kim Nam-gil and Yoo Jae-myung leading the fray, we also have Seohyun as a double agent of sorts, also fighting for freedom (and looking beautiful while doing it). On the baddie side of things, there’s born-to-be-bad Lee Hyun-wook as the officer after our hero, and the lovely Lee Ho-jung as the assassin who will try to put an end to the pesky bandits. While the costuming and art direction look amazing, and the drama looks like a fun romp, I’m not yet entirely sold on Netflix’s portrayal of the era, nor its commitment to the high-budget action sequences. There’s a fine line between historical adventure romp and campy train wreck, so I’m hoping we veer towards the former.

TL;DR: Kim Nam-gil tears it up as a freedom-loving bandit in the 19020s

If this is anything like TOTNT season 2, I'm in.

We already had the campy western in Tale 1938 so I am hoping for a more historical gunslinging freedom-fighting adventure this time around.

Kim Nam Gil 😍 My brain checks out when he's on screen, so I guess I have no wishes as to the quality of this show. 🤷

I especially like Korean dramas that take place during the Japanese occupation of the country. They are very close to what my nation felt during the German and Russian occupation. It's good that this drama is on Netflix because more people will be able to watch it.

Tbh, this drama could be total trash and I will still watch it and very likely love it. I am just prepared to have a good time whatever it ends up being.

Very bummed I have to get through a whole day of work before I can start this.

Ah! I would love that! Watching dramas with other people (like, in the same room at the same time) is a rare experience for me. It would be so fun to sit at the edge of our seats together (if it’s good) or laugh at all the nonsense together (if it’s not) or maybe both!

Me too! I tried watching dramas with my family and it just doesn't work when they are not as interested in them or just don't get why I love them so much. Sometimes it would be fun just to watch with someone who appreciates them like you do.

I haven’t had much luck with single drop dramas. I will wait for some initial beanie feedback before I start.

Are we voting? Then I'm all for historical adventure romp (please) Let this be worth the watch and not let Kim Nam-gil down (or me).
