You can only pick one: Rookie actor
by DB Staff
You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?
You can only pick one rookie actor
missvictrix: Unpopular method though it may be, I glom onto my rookies based almost entirely on their screen presence. Since you’re a rookie, I’m expecting you to be green and/or in a role where you don’t have to do much except look cute and make some hearts bleed, so I’m looking less at your actual bit/supporting part, and more on the potential I see there. How does the camera like you? How do you hold your own onscreen with other well-establish actors? Well, in the case of Ki Do-hoon, he does both of those things well, whether he was playing the small role of the mysterious man behind the app in Love Alarm, or being wildly good in short scenes opposite Kim Hee-ae in Queenmaker. He’s not the only rookie on my list (he keeps good company with Lee Min-jae, Kim Jae-won, Lee Jong-won, and Lee Shi-woo), but I think he’s the one I am most rooting for currently (because underdog).
DaebakGrits: Does Tang Joon-sang still count as a rookie actor? He’s been around a few years and had some pretty big roles in Move to Heaven and Racket Boys, so I’m not sure if he should be considered a rookie or whatever the next level is after that. (Intermediate actor?) For the sake of this prompt, I’m going to consider him a rookie since he’s still young and hasn’t had a “leading man” character (in the conventional K-drama sense). He’s such a promising actor who has already built an impressive and diverse portfolio of characters. It makes me extremely curious to see what kind of characters he will take on as he ages and matures. If he follows the path of a lot of his sunbaes, one day he will probably star in a romance, but I have a hard time imagining that for some reason even though he had a romantic plotline in Racket Boys. Maybe it’s because his character in Move to Heaven left a bigger impression that I hope he continues to take on roles outside the romance genre.
solstices: Oh man, this is a tough one since I have so many favorite rookie actors who started out in web dramas… I suppose I’ll pick the actor I want to promote most — Kim Woo-seok (the musical actor, not to be confused with Kim Woo-seok of UP10TION, though I like them both). Making an adorably endearing debut in the web drama Love Playlist 3, he’s since proven his range through diverse television roles. From a level-headed elite hacker in Voice 2, to a haughty yet sympathetically childlike antagonist in Military Prosecutor Doberman, as well as a loyal and selfless investigator in The Forbidden Marriage — he excels at imbuing his characters with pathos, wringing tears out of me more than a few times. His nuanced acting is evident on stage as well, and he has such a beautiful voice, so I’m certainly anticipating the roles he’ll take once he returns from the military. (Fun fact: his older brother is Kim Min-seok of Melomance, so the talent clearly runs in the family!)
Unit: The first name(s) that comes to mind for this prompt is Lee Chae-min-jae. Ha! Not me trying to be sneaky by inserting my two Crash Course in Romance loves into a single post. Okay, fine, it’s Lee Chae-min and that’s because he’s under the same agency as Kim Soo-hyun (and I have to support family). Family bias aside, I like watching him onscreen. He has a very calm and chill aura, and I find his face at rest very interesting to look at (he looks like a glass of cold water). I enjoy him more in expressive roles like Crash Course than when he’s all stoic and deadpan like in See You in My 19th Life. But hey, that’s on the character he played in that drama and not him.
Dramaddictally: This is even harder than picking a rookie actress! Final decision: Lee Min-jae. Admittedly he wasn’t on my radar until last year when I saw him in Cheer Up – but he was by far my favorite character in that show. He came off as aloof, confident, likable, and somehow older or more mature than his age (please, don’t even tell me how young he is. He’s too cute and I’ll just get dispirited thinking about it). Afterward came Crash Course in Romance where he stole my attention again with the same confident attitude and demeanor – and I can’t even count the number of times I replayed the “wi-pi” clip because it cracks me up every single time. I missed his most recent role in Oh! Young-shim, but now that he’s on a hot streak, I definitely think he’s one to watch.

Rookie as in "inexperienced actor" or rookie as in "first drama"???
I'm choosing the latter definition, of course, and so my answer is unequivocally and definitively: Park Kang-hyun.
Despite having years of experience on the stage, he's got exactly one drama to his name, HeartBeat. I know I'm not alone in hoping he becomes just as common a sight on our screens as he has been in front of live audiences.

Trust you to stretch the definition to fit him hahaha!
He was great though! I'd love to see him in a role with more to do than be overbearingly concerned.

I'm over here trying to find someone to pick who is not the obvious, but who am I kidding? It's Lee Chae-min for me.
I loved both of our boys in Crash Course in Romance, but he had a bigger role and impressed me a bit more. His character was vaguely frustrating in See You in My 19th Life, but I still enjoyed watching him glowering from the sidelines, and be extra punchable in the 1st life flashbacks. Excited to see him in his next project!

Are we talking of rookies in 2023 or in recent years.
Well there's being a breakout of some i particular enjoy, either by a personal watch or due praise by beanies who loved their performance (like Lee Shi-woo in Paper Moon).
The rookie actor going for is Kang Sang-joon. Reason - his role in O'PENing's One Reason We Can't Meet. Why? His performance here forced me to remember where I must have seen have but definitely did not take cognizance of him - Bora! Deborah. Perhaps because his stint in Bora was quite minimal, I wasn't able to notice him shine. With the opportunity the drama special afforded him, shine he did without wasting airtime. He was inexplicably grounded beside UEE I thought he was one actor who had many acting portfolios but no leading role. Alas! He has just Bora and another drama special in 2021. Massive respects from me. He's a rookie actor I'm looking forward to seeing what he does in the near future.

There are a lot of a cute puppies, I mean aspiring rookies!
Kim Do Hoon : I liked him in Here's My Plan, Today's Webtoon, The Law Cafe and now in Moving. He acted pretty different roles.
Kim Moo Joon : I liked him in Love All Play. I'm curious to see more of Crown Prince's scenes in My Dearest.
Choo Young Woo : I'm not sure if he's still a rookie, he was the lead in Once Upon A Small Town, but was the second lead in Oasis. I really liked him School 2021, he was way better than the ML.
Lee Shin Young : He was one of the cute duckling in Crash Landing on You and since I liked to watch him in different roles in Awaken, How to Buy a Friend, Dr Romantic 3 and The Rookie.
But I agree with the other names : Lee Min-jae, Kim Jae-won, Lee Jong-won, and Lee Shi-woo, Kim Woo-seok, Tang Joon, etc...

Tae-joon is too perfect as a character to me. He is loyal, kind, talented, gentle, etc. which makes him boring to watch for me.
Meanwhile, Jung-hwan has many flaws that make him much more interesting to watch and root for.

Confession: I actually... kind of liked it? Well. I didn't hate it. haha. Which uhm, this year, is saying a lot.
Okay, so there was a lot wrong with it, and the plot was weak and so was the villain, and lots of the side stuff was just underwritten period or just not my jam, but I liked the leads together, and I liked the themes of empathy and trying to do the right thing and having faith in each other and protecting each other, and those themes being rewarded.
I liked the hands symbolism and the tension and the parallels and even some of the twists and heists even if they didn’t make sense. And I liked that she came around, and she didn’t have reverse development, and that the leads actions MEANT something.
So I know there’s technically a lot (a lot) wrong with it, and the fourth wall breaks STILL remain a mystery as to why they’re there at all, and I kind of only *just* liked it at times rather than loving it, and consistency therein was a bit iffy, but also I’m giving it thematic and character points even if it could’ve been better in execution, so... take that how you will haha.
Also you know, Kim Dong Wook and Chun Woo Hee. Lol.

Choi Hyun Wook. There are many others I am looking forward to but if I had to pick one, it’s this guy. But I fear if he doesn’t grow taller then this might not end as well as I want it for him (sad reality in the entertainment business, esp if it’s Korea). He will be my new generation hyun bin or that’s the hope.

What? Choi Hyun-wook is plenty tall (181cm). This fear is probably founded for the other Racket Boys (except for Tang Jun-sang because he's an acting prodigy and height is not as important), but Choi Hyun-wook has always been one of, if not the tallest actors in his cast, including next to Nam Joo-hyuk in Twenty-Five Twenty-One.

Agreed on your observation about average height but with top notch acting. I, too have faith in actors that fall in that category. They may even have longer career in this industry than those who meet the standard of Korean beauty. Because the truth is, there will always be more pretty and handsome and taller actors; but ones who can truly act? That's very uncommon.

The first two are child actors who have been acting since they were 10. For Namgoong Min, it took him ages to break into the main lead roles. Their paths were so much harder than Ro Woon, Hwang Minhyun and Nam Joohyuk's, all three basically upgrading to the ML role after playing a second lead once.

I completely agree with you.
Yoo Seung Ho was very shrewd to enlist very young, at only 19! He lost a lot of his babyfat in those 2 years and was able to kinda start afresh with a new image. He now looks very much grown up and I love the aura that he gives.
Yeo Jin Goo on the other hand, lost this great opportunity. He has been stuck in that in-between of not a child actor anymore, but still has the babyfat, for some years, which is very unfortunate.
I suspect disappearing at that age needed significant courage. But he is such a great actor that I'm positive he will find his niche like Nam Goongmin in a few years.

For one of my fave actors that been under my radar, I picked Lee Jin-hyuk from the Kpop boyband Up10tion (Find Me in Your Memory, Dear M (only released in Japan as I knew), Check Out the Event, Why Her) because that was he born 13 days before my birthday (LJH: June 8, 1996; mine: June 20, 1996). I knew he was such good performances in all of my fave Kdramas and also he did well in singing as well. Since he was now an idol-actor, I hope he had many projects to come so I braced myself for his upcoming Kdramas as well as his first film.

Lol I should probably clarify... I've only seen him in Trashdal, and uhm, was he actually decent in that or was everything else just THAT bad ... and so maybe his character ended up being more interesting than anything else ironically at first, (in the same way the Magic Horse jokes were born and I called it [the show] the Horse and His Carrot Boy for the entire run time, and I STILL call Song Joong Ki Carrot Boy, to this day despite the carrot only turning up once) and then less ironically because you had to care about something to get through Arthdal at all and the best pickings were whatever your chosen crackship with 5 seconds of screentime was which in some cursed fluke would've been a better story than the one we got, and shitposting like your life depended on it, because, if you didn't... you would be ... well, a lot worse off... which is saying something since that drama gave me multiple existential crisis ... Anyway this is not clarifying anything at ALL but, all this IS to say that I have no other experience with him as an actor outside of uhm... That. So. 🤷♀️🤣

I rarely use the word "endearing" for a male character, but his portrayal of Kim Do Ha in MLL made his character very endearing to me.

Baek Hyun Sung in Miraculous Brother. That kids has raw talent. He can capture the innocence of Kang San's char and act so well complimenting Jung Woo. His range is quite a fit. Will definitely watch him for sure

Bae Hyun Sung has a great future. I had watched him before (Hospital Playlist, Extraordinary You) but it's in Miraculous Brothers where I'm paying more attention to his acting.
I hope he keeps getting main roles in good dramas.

The roles is make him show the potential he will bring in a meaty / demanding roles. The vulnerability he showed plus at times there is also abit of cunning side too.

I'm going to pick Noh Sang-Hyun. I've only seen him in 2 dramas, but wow did he stand out! Curtain Call and Pachinko. He hasn't done too many dramas/movies. I'm not sure if he would count as a Rookie or just an actor that hasn't had much success being cast--he has already past that 30 year old mark (1990). Maybe, he has another career in a different part of entertainment....but, I really did like seeing him on screen.

I thought he actually is an American actor and that’s why we haven’t seen him in Korean dramas

Hmm. I looked him up on Wikipedia, and indeed, he spent his childhood in Boston and went to Boston College for business. But, I didn't see anything listed for US based programs, mostly just Korean.

I must be part of the 1% who were not interested in Crash Course IR so I'm not inclined towards the two rookies from that drama. There are actually a lot of names in the comments which I don't recognise so I don't know about the freshest rookies but I will second:
-Choi Hyunwook (great screen presence, memorable in all his roles)
-Tan Joonsang (he is THE Yoon HaeKang after all!!!)
-Kim Dohoon (it's impressive how you can see his character in Moving is holding back a lot of emotions under that restrained demeanour)
-Lee Won-jung (stole the show in My Perfect Stranger, he showed a lot of range within that one role)

My pick for best rookie actor is the underrated Ahn Ji-ho (of Nobody Knows and Move To Heaven). I thought he gave a very mature performance for such a young actor and I loved the chemistry between him and Kim Seo-hyung in the drama.
Interestingly, Ahn Ji-ho is also starring in the upcoming "BTS Universe"-inspired drama Youth along with my other favorite rookie discovery, Kim Yoon-woo (of My Dearest). Can't wait to see those two together on-screen!

I wish photos were added of each rookie, cuz I honestly don’t think I have watched enough dramas lately to know those rookies, to me Lee Do Hyun is still a rookie, cu I just heard of him this year, and out of dramas I watched I don’t really remember young actors that well

Kim Jae-Won: King the Land (Ro-woon, airline steward)
Kim Yoon-Woo: My Dearest (Ryang-Eum, singer)
Tang Joon-Sang is phenomenal and had a leading role in a drama "Move to Heaven" (excellent movie "A Melody to Remember" as a child actor)

Park Solomon. I only saw him in REVENGE FOR OTHERS. He portrayal of the empathetic and sensible guy with doe-like eyes warmed me up to him quickly, then bam! His violent vigilante was brutal, hard to watch. That duality won me over.

I'm sitting here, wondering how Choi Hyun Wook has skipped everybody's mind. He literally started his career in 2019 and has been a necessary part of every drama he has been in. Seriously, from Twenty-five Twenty-one to D.P.2, what's not to like?
Of course, some other are on my radar: I really hope Tang Joon Sang will leave romance roles and take on characters; he has the flair for it. Ki Do Hoon in Once Again 😍 and Moon Sang Min
