Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

It’s time for our vampire hero to reflect upon where his feelings truly lie — does his first love still hold true, or have centuries of yearning clouded his judgment? Perhaps the devotion of old has already withered away, with a new bond blossoming in its place.

EPISODES 11-12

Won Ji-ahn Yoon So-hee Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

Upset that In-hae has usurped what she believes to be her rightful place by Woo-hyul’s side, Hae-won smashes a row of champagne glasses and storms out. In-hae chases after her to defuse the situation, but Hae-won is convinced that In-hae has feelings for Woo-hyul. When Woo-hyul and Do-shik come to In-hae’s defense, jealousy rears its ugly head and Hae-won vows to put In-hae in her humble place.

In the post-cleanup aftermath, In-hae urges Woo-hyul to apologize to Hae-won for hurting her feelings. However, Woo-hyul admits that the only person he’s worried about in this sticky situation is In-hae. He apologizes for putting In-hae in a difficult position, reassuring her that he’ll clear the air with Hae-won.

The next day, Do-shik calls Hae-won out for her impulsive immaturity, citing the need to be considerate towards the person one loves. She counters that he’ll end up losing In-hae like that, which pushes Do-shik to show In-hae the CCTV video of vampire Woo-hyul. In-hae’s first reaction is to confirm that Do-shik hasn’t released the video elsewhere, which clearly demonstrates that not only does she know about Woo-hyul’s identity, but she’s also protecting him.

That’s the last straw that tests the limits of Do-shik’s boundless patience. Ever since he found out that In-hae’s living with a man, all he’s been concerned about is her safety. Has she ever considered his perspective, or tried to understand him the way she does Woo-hyul? All this time, Do-shik’s been waving through a window; he’s only ever been on the outside, always looking in. In-hae can only apologize in contrition, unable to defend her own actions, yet also unwilling to throw Woo-hyul to the wolves.

Taecyeon Yoon So-hee Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

While In-hae was out, Woo-hyul’s discovered that his scroll of Hae-sun has disappeared. He ransacks the house in search of it, but to no avail. Seeing Woo-hyul so downcast, In-hae comforts him by reminding him that it’s just a painting; his enduring feelings matter more. Just then, Hae-won drunk dials Woo-hyul. He heads over to the bar to pick her up, and she’s so wasted that she clings onto him all the way home.

The next morning, Hae-won confronts Woo-hyul with the scroll of Hae-sun, asking if he really isn’t human. Leveraging on their supposed shared past, Hae-won selfishly declares that they can just kick In-hae out of the mansion. Until Woo-hyul fulfills his promise to her, she’ll hold onto the scroll. “No, you don’t need to return it,” Woo-hyul finally replies. Repeating In-hae’s words, he declares that it’s merely a painting. He’s waiting for someone who taught him what it’s like to be loved, not a mere doppelgänger of Hae-sun.

When Woo-hyul still doesn’t return by nightfall, In-hae rushes out to search for him, frantic with worry. In the face of her concern, Woo-hyul’s heart warms with gratitude, but his vision suddenly goes blurry, sending him collapsing to the ground. Thankfully, his vampire buddies Sang-hae and Dong-seop are in the vicinity, and they come dashing over at the sound of In-hae’s panicked cries.

Needless to say, it’s unnatural for a vampire to be sick, much less unconscious in a human’s bed. In-hae dozes off by Woo-hyul’s side, and when he wakes, she confesses that she was terrified he would never regain consciousness. She can’t bear to lose anyone the same way she did her parents, and she’d be devastated if Woo-hyul was no longer around.

“I know there’s only one person you harbor in your heart,” In-hae murmurs. Still, it’s the first time she’s ever felt this way, so she feels she ought to say it — “I think I like you.” In response, Woo-hyul tugs In-hae into a kiss. As they pull apart, gazing tenderly into each other’s eyes, Woo-hyul promises that he won’t go anywhere. He’ll stay right by In-hae’s side.

Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

The next morning, our lovebirds are adorably bashful — In-hae even put on makeup, hee! Unfortunately, a potential morning smooch is interrupted by Sang-hae and Dong-seop, who insist on moving into the guesthouse out of concern for Woo-hyul’s health.

Not to worry, though, because there’s a lot more cuteness in store. An impromptu babysitting request turns into an amusement park date, where we learn that vampires may instill fear into humans, but rollercoasters and haunted houses instill fear into Woo-hyul.

Later that night, after Woo-hyul and In-hae tuck into their babysitting reward of tteokbokki, In-hae suggests that they set a date. Now that she’s in love, Woo-hyul can finally drink her blood and become human — how about they throw a celebratory party on the 100th day anniversary of his awakening? Touched by her selfless affection, Woo-hyul agrees, smiling fondly at her.

Meanwhile, our troublesome vampire is up to no good again. Having caught wind of Do-shik’s investigation into Woo-hyul’s supernatural background, Man-hwi pays him a visit, offering to find the half-vampire he’s searching for. It’s clear both parties stand to benefit from the proposed partnership — it’s a deal Do-shik can’t turn down. They shake on it, and Man-hwi relays the full story of Woo-hyul’s Become Human endeavor. Smart cookie Do-shik remains wary of Man-hwi’s ulterior motives, though, since he recognizes him from the CCTV video.

Elsewhere, Woo-hyul has good news for Yang-nam. He’s secured his love-filled blood! Now he and In-hae can be happy! Yang-nam squints at that — surely he means Hae-sun? When he realizes Woo-hyul’s heart lies with In-hae, he has awful news for him. A sip of In-hae’s blood won’t be enough — the consequence of opening a vampire’s coffin is that she either has to be drained of blood by the vampire, or kill the vampire herself. In other words, only one of them can live.

Taecyeon Park Kang-hyun Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12 Taecyeon Park Kang-hyun Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

Do-shik hears about this from the eavesdropping Man-hwi, and he immediately rushes over to the guesthouse, punching Woo-hyul square in the jaw. Is he really planning to kill In-hae? In what world does it make sense for a bloodsucking vampire to fall in love, and with a human at that? “You’re a monster,” Do-shik accuses.

Inside the guesthouse, a tenant’s stalker shows up to harass her, and when In-hae is shoved aside in the ensuing scuffle, Woo-hyul’s bite mark flares with pain. Sprinting inside at vampiric speed, Woo-hyul makes quick work of the stalker. However, In-hae sustained a head wound, and Woo-hyul’s bloodlust overrides his rational faculties.

His eyes flashing red, Woo-hyul can’t help but lean in, enticed by his beloved’s blood just as he was centuries ago. That’s the scene that greets Do-shik when he finally runs in, confirming the monstrous risk that Woo-hyul poses to In-hae. Yanking Woo-hyul aside, Do-shik cradles In-hae close, while Woo-hyul is struck with horror at his own actions.

It looks like the requisite final-act angst has arrived, though I’m glad it’s tempered by all the heart-fluttering cuteness of Woo-hyul and In-hae finally acknowledging their feelings. They’ve been each other’s pillar of support and safe harbor to return home to, seeing all the worst sides of each other and choosing to stay by their side through it all.

I thought it was particularly poignant that during that last confrontation, Do-shik looked more sad than angry. He’s always cared about her wellbeing first and foremost, and it speaks volumes that he respected her decision to live with Woo-hyul despite his reservations, only taking action when he learnt Woo-hyul might jeopardize her safety.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 11-12

Of course, that doesn’t make things any easier for Woo-hyul, who was already weighed down by the life-or-death dilemma — now he also has to grapple with the fact that he could inadvertently hurt the person he loves most.

Worse yet, this week we find out the truth behind the disappearance of In-hae’s father. He’s still alive, but he’s in captivity — and of course, the culprit is none other than Man-hwi, who’s also locked up several other humans to fill his blood supply dungeon.

Still, I have faith that our leads will pull through any crisis that comes their way, even when all these secrets come to light. For one, In-hae is no pushover — when Hae-won tried to guilt-trip her into leaving Woo-hyul, she instead stood her ground, declaring that she’s going to follow her heart. If there’s anyone who can defy otherworldly rules and make a half-vampire romance work, it’s her.

Of course, it wasn’t going to be that simple. Whoever was writing these vampire history reference books clearly was a sadist. Suck the blood dry until death, rip the heart out and drink blood etc etc.

Do-Shik is such a well written character. I really like how he is a decent chap with his own values and principles. Even when In-Hae doesn’t reciprocate his feelings he was decent. He gave her the space, yet continued to help her. When HaeWon crossed the line he called her out.
But, when it comes Woo-Hyeol he doesn’t use the same values. Because he is not human and hence he doesn’t apply the same moral codes for him. That’s what makes him interesting. He is exactly the reason why vampires hide and don’t reveal their identity. Even the nicest humans will destroy the vampires because they see them as monsters. Does this make them bad humans?

I smell noble idiocy from a mile away. I see Woo-Hyeol leaving her because he can’t kill her and doesn’t think she would be safe around him.

Also cat man. Geez this dude. So he was a mere mortal but reincarcerated as cat man???
How does this work?. He is annoying me with his half baked information since the beginning.

I like Do Shik too as a person and respect how he treats In Hae but the matter of fact way he talks about finding a half vampire and ripping his heart out and eating it seems a bit too sadistic even for a vampire drama. Also his right hand man. ‘Find me a vampire’ sure sir and in comes Man Wi 🤔

He didn’t did he? It was Man Hwi who heard them in the basement car park and approached Do-Shik.
They know he is a vampire only because they were following WH and saw that confrontation and it got recorded.

I believe you are right!
And still, it’s implied that RHM (right hand man) canaccess the vamp world when Do Sik tells him to do so. I can’t help but think RHM is part of that world, or the vamp-killing segment. How, how how? is my question each time I see him!

Would it really be a full blown noble idiocy tho? It'd be out of character if our Vampie doesn't step away from the woman he loves but whose unique blood he can't control himself around. (Twilight anyone?) It's so old fashioned, and stupidly "chivalrous" as his thinking is. The preview gave me hope tho. I don't think In-hae will put up with such nonsense.

There would Atleast be a short duration of WH sulking and thinking about leaving her. I hope In-Hae questions him and gets all the details. In fact it’s time they have a proper meeting with everyone (vampire gang) including cat man. It’s about time to put their heads together. Only In-Hae can ask the right questions. Or Rose can add some value.
Also, I forgot to add - GET A LOCK for that front door you damn fools.

As I read your comment, it occurred to me that the women of this show are just *more* They're tougher, cooler, meaner, everything. Nicely done show. (Sorry if everyone had already cottoned on to that.) I'd love for Rose and In-Hae to become friends. They'd be just what they need, for each other and for those bumbling boys.

Scattered thoughts: ugh, Hae-won is so entitled, obsessed, and possessive; it's creepy. Who does she think she is?? (Nevermind...) Rose continues to be awesome and nothing had better happen to her. Well well well... cat man is a jerk. Man-hwi is a creep, but he has beautiful eyes. Do-sik's reasoning as a vampire hunter: umbrellas and sunglasses = 100% proof of vampirism. And omo it continues to be hilarious how chill Do-sik and his secretary are about everything... "I'll trace other vampires through the illegal blood pack trade," "cool, sounds good, keep me posted." And I found Woo-hyeol freaking out in the horror maze hilarious, and I loved the amusement park date.

Sweet stuff: that moment on the bridge when In-hae found Woo-hyeol and he looked at her with love and happiness... 😍 And then their kiss with the sun rising behind them...🥰 And then In-hae and Woo-hyeol being giddy and sweet after their kiss... 😍😍😍 And then doing the laundry together! So SWEEEET.

Favorite Woo-hyeol Quotes:
--"But strangely enough, I was only worried about you"
--"She's always on my mind ... I just want her to be happy"
--"The person I'm waiting for is the one who taught me what it's like to be loved and made me dream of love that makes my heart beat, not someone who simply looks like Hae-sun"
--"When you called out for me, it felt like I was being rescued from a dark pit. I was elated and relieved to see you."

And the ending... you know what, I'm still living up to my name and holding out hope for a happy and romantic ending. All of the conflict (including between themes and motives!) has been set up for what could be a narratively satisfying last few episodes. My predictions are that Hae-won will be the ultimate big bad, and that when she takes things too far, Do-sik will snap out of it and redeem himself by doing something dumb and noble; and I think In-hae and Woo-hyeol will both try to sacrifice themselves for each other, but whichever one succeeds will save the other (and consequently, themselves) through their act of unconditional love. Closing credits: sound of a heart beating. Please be a happy ending!!! 제발!!

(P.S. My mom still loves it! After seeing the end of ep 11, she sent me a message calling it "superb" with a Nick Jonas chef's kiss gif 😂 The end of ep 12 earned quite a different reaction)

Hae-won - She is grating me. She only liked him because he made her curious. There was nothing he did (other than the initial meetings) that showed that he wanted a relationship with her. She acts like she should be picked no matter what.
I was upset Do-Shik revealed that WH is a vampire to her. In-Hae asked him not to.
But i know he really sees him as a threat to humans and telling her was the right thing to do. His pov.
I am sad that she became this single dimensional 2FL.

I agree with you, Blue! She's fully obsessed after not a whole lot of concrete encouragement from Woo-hyeol. While disappointing, Do-sik's actions are also understandable (from his perspective). I think the actor is doing a great job of bringing more nuance to the SML role.

I haven't liked Hae-won from the beginning and an unsurprised to see her descent into absolute villainy, but I do wish we had a little bit more information about her. Where on earth did she get this sense of entitlement? And she's supposed to be this cool businesswoman, but I'm starting to think she must have just inherited it all.

OK. Yes, he's gonna do something dumb and noble, because that's just like my man...however, exactly what has he done so far that needs redeeming??

He may get there. Meaning, I am ready for him to act in a way that requires redemption...but I stand firm *sniff* where I stand *sniff* that he's just doing his best *blows nose* with the information *sniff* he has at this tiiiime **bawls into hanky**

I'm sad to be on the opposite side of you, but if you are Do-sik's apologist then I am his... prosecutor? What's the opposite of an apologist? He's not really accepting In-hae's agency or choice (coincidentally enough, this tendency in 2MLs is often why I dislike them so). He thinks he's interfering for her own good, but isn't it ultimately just a rationalization for his selfish jealousy?

WELL! Let's dooo this...

He's in love with her and wants her to be happy.

He's quite sure that the guy she's attracted to is going to drink her blood and kill her cruelly--something that he, himself, would never, ever do in a million years, clearly.

If I were him, I'd behave just as he is doing.

He's not stopping her from doing anything she wants to do or manipulating her or even saying one mean thing to her--apart from calling Woo-hyeol a monster, but then again, that's really what he thinks and has good cause. His family has been worried about vampires for centuries, and here one is, endangering his college love.

He's behaving incredibly respectfully. For now. And I hope it stays that way--although I bet my heart will be broken soon enough.

He is technically stopping her, though, by talking to Woo-hyeol and trying to get Woo-hyeol to stay away from her. He's trying to get Woo-hyeol to Noble Idiot her, from what I can see.

Also I hope we're still friends! I respect that you want him for yourself and don't want him with In-hae.

6

@vienibenmio This is a hoot. We are of course still friends. I'm gonna continue...

He saved her freaking life by pushing a feeding vampire aside, and come next episode, Woo-hyeol is going to AGREE with his actions!!

All Do-sik is doing is using his words and protecting his love (he just hasn't met me yet...that's OK). Woo-hyeol is an adult, well past the age to be swayed by a silly young human, and so, clearly, is In-hae.

Did I also mention that, moreover, he's pretty much right about everything he says...it's just not going to work out because *insert tragic love story here*.

He's gonna be the key to the happy ending, folks. He may even pay the ultimate price.

6

@seon-ha Someday he'll meet you! Maybe you can get that last minute "second lead has a meetcute their true love" scene in ep 16 like Love is for Suckers.

I do agree that he was right to pull Woo-hyeol off of her, but before that he really has no actual evidence that he's going to hurt her (in fact, he has evidence to the contrary with In-hae telling him that she's fine). He also saw Woo-hyeol say "In-hae is in danger!" and run off, which to me seems the opposite of him being a threat to her.

I don't think he's entirely wrong, which is what makes him interesting, but I do think he'd be acting differently, or at least less aggressively, if he didn't perceive Woo-hyeol as romantic rival.

5

He is also going to try to kill the vampire hero and drink his blood to turn immortal. He is listening to an evil vampire because they are going to end in cahoots. Then he will imprison In-Hae. The signs are all there @attiton! Why are you doing this to yourself!

8

@hacja, I have but 14 lines of iambic pentameter for you.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd.

5

Oh, I love this little debate. Beanies doing it right. And where do I land? In the middle. Because writers have made Do-sik a more complex *human* filled with right intentions as well as some selfish ones. Isn't it boring when a 2L is just perfect but also when just evil (tho more on that with 2FL)? And the actor is playing him so well to show all those sides.

I don't think any of us want anyone but Woo-hyul to be end game. But I hope the show does Do-sik right.

7

How is he "in love with her" when he barely knows her? He knows some aspects of her personality and he's interested in her but "love" seems like a strong.

2

Thanks for appreciating the “debate,” @indyfan. I’d be lying if I didn’t participate (well, start) it in part because of your threat last week of turning in your Heartbeat Hottest t-shirt since everyone was being so resolutely positive!!

I’m not fibbing about my stance, though. Lots of folks are loving the acting work of Park Kang-hyun (deserved!!!) and the way Shin Do-sik is written (deserved!!!) but are reticent to side with him. That’s cool.

I think at the core of his character is the fact that he’s actually just a guy doing his best with a one-sided love that’s been going on for perhaps six or so years (since college when he would visit her restaurant all the time just to spend time with her)?? And now, he’s quite sure that his rival is trying to, quite literally, kill In-hae. Which is, frankly, not too darn far from the reality of the situation.

If there weren’t our most friendly, attractive vampire, this behavior might be seen as chivalrously persistent. It’s just a matter of context and degree!

This show is SUPER good, even though the amusement park scene happened. Squee.

4

I grant you Do-sik. He is worthy. However, I warn you, he's not the type to get over his first love quickly.

As for my complaint last recap. I'm kicking myself. I jinxed the show. Oof. Blame it all on me, not some writer running out of inspiration. However, my faith shall now restore the following episodes.

3

@indyfan Yes, it’ll all be fine, no matter what. ‘Tis just a drama, after all…

As for swaying Do-sik’s heart, I’m taking @pikpokpikpok’s suggestion. where did I put my secret waterbed in this dungeon???

1

Yeah, I did enjoy him telling Hae-won off ("stop being childish" is exactly what I wanted to say to her in that moment), but he's not really listening to In-hae, just assuming she must be wrong because she couldn't possibly know how dangerous vampires are. *rolls eyes* Yes, great, tell me again how you know more about vampires than the person who's been living with one for months.

He has a centuries-old book that his family has passed down to him saying how dangerous vampires are! His family members die early deaths because of a vampire-related curse. He really believes that they are no-good and has personal evidence that is showing up in his own body.

Man-hwi is the paradigm here. He'd do or say anything to get his way!!!

Do-sik could be condescending and patriarchal, but frankly, he's not doing that. He's incredulous, yes, but has simply been speaking his mind.

4

The only way we know that the curse is vampire-related is because the family needs to murder one to cure it. Maybe it's origins are also vampire-related but I haven't seen any proof of that. And the book says how to kill vampires and that they need to in order to lift the curse, but it's not a catalogue of vampire-danger. I'm sure he really believes they are no good, but he's sitting with a person he says he likes who is telling him that this person is not like that. And then he gets all aggressive with U-hyeol way before he's had any kind of confirmation (false or otherwise) that he's actually dangerous.

I don't know, I don't hate him by any means, but he doesn't do much but frustrate me at this point.

2

Actually, unless Amazon's translation is off, the book says that he has to kill a half-vampire (aka harvest his heart and consume it) in order to become immortal. I guess being immortal means you won't die from a genetic heart condition? Also, I'm pretty sure the ancestor writing in the book was the same guy who was leading the posse to kill Woo-hyeol and Hae-Sun and who actually killed Hae-Sun and they were doing so in order to drink Woo Hyeol's blood and thus become immortal.

5

Just you wait, folks. We all know very little about the whole narrative of that book.

We don’t know, for example, what happens if the vampire hunter sacrifices himself for the vampire. How might that affect and, even, truly break a horrible centuries-long curse for all involved?

We don’t know, but we shall see!!!

3

I don't actually care for Do Shik, but honestly you are right on the money about him. Vampires are dangerous. Man Hwi is a prime example and they haven't done anything to disabuse humans of the notion that they aren't all bad. So no need to be an apologist, he is in the right so far as it comes to Woo Hyeol, but he needs to let our girl go. She told him she is just not that into him.

The writers have done us a little dirty here. I don’t believe she’s actually ever said that. She’s implied it plenty, but I’ve been thinking about this…she’s said “*now* isn’t the right time” and “I don’t want to talk about Woo-hyeol anymore” but not “I’m not into you.”

Instead, her actions speak differently. She rushes to his hospital bedside, goes shopping like newlyweds when they (mutually) pick out the furniture for the guesthouse reno, shows up at his wine bar to feel better when she’s sad, takes his help and trusts him when he knows how hard that is for her. As he said himself, “this is how it feels to have someone care for you.”

Because she does care for him. But the plot point is that she doesn’t know how she feels. He sure knows how he feels and he’s behaving appropriately on those feelings (I know he’s not the ML folks, and things can change).

OKOK I’ll stop I’ll stop, after this.

But we have two masculinities here: one that kisses more-or-less uncontrollably—surprise!!—whenever he’s overwhelmed with desire for “blood” and the other who knows what his heart wants and is more than capable of respecting the boundaries of the other.

As a reminder, I am team Woo-hyeol for the end game here. But I am team Jacob Do-sik in reality. Indeed, I hope that our vampire will become more like our land developer by the end than vice versa.

Like I said on my fanwall, THIS is how you plot out a romance! That ending of ep 12 was so wonderful. I do wish we'd have a little more of a confession from Woo-hyeol, but I suppose it makes sense given that his whole deal is not knowing what love is or feels like.

I'm getting more and more annoyed by the second leads. Hae-won only liked the attention and affection she was getting from Woo-hyeol. She liked how she was reflected by him and the intense adoration he showed for her. It wasn't about him at all. Now she's acting like a kid whose toy was taken away.

Speaking of kids, I just was not in the mood for another "the couple babysits a kid and look how cute, it's like they're a little family" scene so soon after KTL. To be fair, I am currently doing IVF treatment so I may be not the particular audience for those sorts of things.

I haven't given a shout out to this yet, so I will now: I really love the music in this show. Not just the original OST tracks, but also the background music.

So, was Cat Man the one who shot Hae-sun with the arrow? I felt like that wasn't super clear. And that was In-hae's father in the prison, right?

Really interesting complication at the end. I'm thinking we'll get a happy ending, but I admit I'm nervous. I don't know how they're gonna work this one out, I just have to assume that they will.

Why do writers think that audience would feel this to be cute and romantic? I much perfer the scene of the leads sitting abd talking in the garden with the "Grandma Tteokbokki" PPL

Our couple were anything but normal. That’s what made them special. Their date would never be an amusement park. And this whole scene felt like it was from another drama. They could have been sorting recycling together while grinning like idiots and I would have been a happy camper. Or go shopping to buy supplies and take a bus back home.

It did feel like it was from another drama. I just really also dislike the "overly precocious child who says something insightful about love" trope. It seems pretty common, since I can think of other dramas that had the same thing

Why do kids suddenly become synonymous with cuteness? At what age are adults too old to be cute by themselves so they need their own cute support animal/child?

The show's focus on recycling in the early episodes was one of its strengths and I miss that.

I might just be a little bias but as much as I know how amusement park scenes are done to death in kdramas, but I saw it a little differently in this show (cos I am bias of course!).

Like you said, our couple are anything but normal - ML has never known an amusement park, and FL's struggles in life + lack of social life which would make a trip to the amusement park a luxury, thus explaining how both looked a little lost when they arrived.

Very little things would give them the excuse to push out of their comfort zones or go on a date without the kid as a catalyst (thank you wingboy for making them hold hands!).

I am just super glad they get to enjoy a first together, and stop to pause to consider what happiness means through the faces of the crowd, since they probably know very little of it.

Discovering new emotions and new experiences together with each other when they cannot enjoy food together, I'm all up for it!

I wasn't a fan. But kudos for loving the scene and standing against the tide in one of your first comments.

Glad it worked for you. Heartbeat needs all our luv.

3

I will support you on this limb. The amusement park segue worked for me because it highlighted of how love is lived and added more dimension to the idea of why he wants to be human. The title, the stated goal has been all about the thrill of love, the heart beating fast. But the merry-go-round scene with its emphasis on how love can create family, and/or someone to age with, and u-hyeol's expression...well, i was buying it. It expanded my idea of what he meant by becoming human and what he felt he was missing out on by remaining a vampire. We have not seen that previously, so it didn't feel like fluff to me.

7

Ah, thank you @fancypants for saying/doing this, as it give me the opportunity to directly introduce you to @pikpokpikpok.

It’s my take that the two of you will get along quite well in these parts…I don’t imagine you’ll always agree on everything, but I suspect you’ll share similar(ly awesome) hot takes quite frequently.

2

I loved the amusement park scene too!👍

4

@mayhemf I would have preferred if it was just the 2 of them, and you are right, if he didn't get scared.. why do the MLs always get scared for comic relief, tsk!

@indyfan I guess it is not the whole part, but just the interactions, and they both stood by to watch the world go by, and appreciate what it is to be... humans with pure joy and happiness. Not sure if kdrama wanna appeal to that unbridled pure joy people tend to forget, maybe a hot air balloon ride or something might be good to break out of the cliches. LOL.

@fancypants YES! Exactly. It was that scene that worked for me (besides her prepping the ox blood for him), not the scaredy cliches, but THAT moment where both were appreciating what it means to love and both of them had longed for a burden-less kinda happiness... it was a subtle understanding of what living is all about. It is different from smiles and laughs during a party, or watching a movie. I love the fact that they weren't on the rides but paused to have the shared moment of appreciation.

@attiton aww thank you for expanding my "network" here, and I love the different opinions here which make me rewatch a scene differently and look out for what I had missed!

5

I'm assuming you meant the end of ep 11 was wonderful (and I agree!) because ep 12 was more worrying for sure. And I totally agree about wanting a confession from U-hyeol also - In-hae's was so brave!

I also agree that Hae-won doesn't really love/like U-hyeol, just was really into the attention he gave her. But since I have despised her from the beginning, I don't really feel annoyed by her turning, and while I'm surprised at the extent of her tantrum, I'm not surprised she's throwing one.

My understanding about how Hae-sun died was that Cat Man is the one who told Do-shik's ancestor what he needed to survive, setting off all the events that led to Hae-sun being shot. So Cat Man had an indirect hand in the whole thing and feels really guilty about it. I'm sure we'll find out he's a minor god or something at some point because I don't know where he's getting this knowledge otherwise.

@vienibenmio I am sorry it touched a raw nerve. Honestly, Amusement park trope has run its course, and adding a kid to it is even worse. For the first time I didn't enjoy a scene in Heartbeat becasue the scenes were near identical to almost all the other amusement park episodes in other dramas. When the writers start coping out, I get nervous. The last few episodes are where most dramas fail, and seeing they actually had to resort to an overused trope to show cute moments after staying original for most of the drama made my heart hurt.

And (as others have said about Du-shik / Du-sick and his odd illness & cure) how would cat-man know how much coffin-opener blood is needed? How many times has this happened? How many controlled tests has he run? Sorry, but these twists are overpowering the good vibes from the antics of the leads and my willing suspension of disbelief is looking for a Truck to stand in front of.

Another Kdrama suffering in the last half. Seconds leads have turned worst, cat man is adding new rules and Man Hwi is not just a bad vampire but an evil one who kidnaps humans and sucks their blood. I also did not like the leads amusement park date and the kid speaking about love was so random.

The few things I liked were the kiss, FL not being shocked about Dong Seob pulling out a blood pouch, but concerned about getting another one incase Woo Hyul collapses again and firmly telling the SFL that she won't stop loving Woo Hyul.

Cat Man. What the heck? I trusted you, even after learning that you apparently hand out info willy-nilly to anyone who needs a little supernatural guidance without a proper background check. But now you’re telling me that the info you gave our hero a million episodes ago was incredibly, woefully, tragically incomplete? You didn’t think he needed to know those other details? You didn’t think In-hae should be informed that she’s going to die in a hot minute unless she kills U-hyeol? I’m trying not to be too annoyed at this, because it will obviously all work out in the end, but this feels sloppy in a way that the rest of it hasn’t.

I did really love U-hyeol’s realization this week that Hae-won is a pretty far cry from Hae-sun, even if she is the reincarnation of her (which we still don’t really know). I can understand her wanting to get In-hae out of the picture, but actually trying to hold something that U-hyeol values hostage to get him to cooperate with her? Sheesh. She didn’t slide down a slippery slope so much as swan-dive into a pool (of evil). So I was glad that U-hyeol saw through it immediately, although it was a bit heartbreaking to watch him wandering around, thinking back to all the moments they had and trying to sort out what to do and how he felt. Don’t get me wrong, Hae-won’s villainy is a bit delicious, but even I was surprised how disgustingly possessive she is about someone she is interested in, and how much she was/is trying to get Do-shik to be the same way.

In other villain news, I was a little surprised at the reveal that Man-hwi, rather than being an average, petty, shallow type of villain, actually has his plans together enough to have a blood farm in his lair. That is a level of organization that I had previously put past him, so way to break my expectations, sir.

Because he wouldn't sell the house to Hae-won? Before I just assumed Man-hwi wanted to mess with U-hyeol while he was asleep, so he targeted his butler. But I kinda like this better.

I'm DEFINITELY getting the vibe that In-hae is Hae-sun. She seems so similar personality-wise and in terms of the things she says to Woo-hyeol (like bringing blood to the amusement park for him). Although I would still not prefer this, I would be okay with it because Woo-hyeol is already in love with her as herself, and not because he thinks she's Hae-sun.

6
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

ALSO I think it would be more interesting for the show to acknowledge that environmental factors are important and, even if Hae-won is Hae-sun, she's going to still be different because you are going to act/think differently if you are raised as the daughter of a rich family vs. more humble origins. Not sure it will go that complex though, lol.

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm with you. In-hae is the likely reincarnation, and that the show probably won't get complex with it. It's already pretty rad for a show this modest to play this much with the reincarnation trope. Our vain vampire learns to love not who looks like his first love, but who she really is at heart. OK, maybe that moral really is more old fashioned. LOL.

And I'll still be pretty happy if we're both wrong, and the show is fully inverting the trope, rather than partially.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm as annoyed with Catman being so cryptic as the next viewer, but I do think there's one thing to be said here in his (weak) defense.

There was no experimental pre-condition that the person the "coffin-opener" loved had to be the one in the coffin. So, it could be that the vamp was just gonna kill some lady he didn't care that much about.

HOWEVER, I also grant that in the K-drama book of logical rulez, there was no other way than for this to be the set up for tragic love story.

...that will be dramatically saved by Do-sik.

3

Required fields are marked *

For sure the coffin-opener doesn't have to love the coffin-occupier, but I'm still objecting to the inclusion of killing at all. No other part of being a vampire requires killing people, so it seems weird that this one would. And I still think Cat Man could have provided more info earlier on.

I think this is a likely outcome for In-hae, but Do-shik’s instructions seem pretty literal. I’m excited to find out where they go with it!

1

Ah, we knew there'd be angst and some pretext for separation and here it comes. I doubt there's going to be any noble idiocy in the true sense, but one of them leaving genuinely to protect the other seems to be in the cards and a much more consistent development for this show. I love the way In-hae is repeatedly offered an opportunity to behave like a typical rom-com FL and give in to bullying or “destined love” or supernatural nonsense - and flatly nopes it every time.

The amusement park was one of the few false notes this show has struck so far; the child actor seems to have been hanging around in this drama only so he could awkwardly deliver some painfully clichéd lines about love and allow the leads to playact at being the family they never had. I’ll forgive it if the show promises to let the poor kid disappear - shouldn’t he be in school?

The laundry-stomping was cute, but I know because PPL that washing machines exist in Korea. I can't imagine wringing out those heavy comforters by hand, and they'd take days to dry.

My grandmother grew up on a farm without electricity, and used to describe doing laundry using a wash board. It was not romantic.
However, this is a guest house with only one bathroom, and it’s a sign of how sinister Do Shik’s intentions were that the flash renovation he paid for not only put a red checked pillow on a yellow couch, it only provided for one bathroom. Given kdramas predilection for toilet humor, I’m surprised the writers didn’t take advantage of this circumstance, although I guess vampires don’t have normal digestive issues.

What makes me cautiously optimistic about the final four episodes is the fact that I feel (based on the preview scenes) that the mystery of In-hae’s dad—and probably the gold—will be addressed sooner than later, which will then leave ample time for the actual battle between good and bad vampires and the humans take each side. Then we have a chance for at least one episode just about being happy.

I really, really wish the amusement park scene hadn’t happened too, especially hot on the heels of the other 2PM drama. What other tropey way to show “connected true love and affection that is soon to be broken by the tragic plot twist” would we have preferred? Pretty much any of them. For preference, I’d have liked to have seen a long, slow walk in a park holding hands—talking, as these two do so well, about anything they liked.
