King the Land: Episodes 7-8
by Dramaddictally
We’re at the halfway point and our leads are totally twitterpated, which means the drama is cooking up jealousy all around — even if our OTP feigns confidence at all times. Our hero’s journey starts to take off this week, giving us some growth, as he realizes the best way to meet his goals is to do exactly what he was trying to avoid. Plus, we all know what happens in Episode 8 of an old school rom-com, so get ready — because when the moment arrives, it’s anything but traditional.
EPISODES 7-8
I’m tempted to jump straight to the end and talk about the kiss, but I need a few minutes to remember how to breathe, so let’s start with the lead-up. This week packs a lot of situations that feel somewhat forced, but they’re necessary (story-wise) to motivate Won’s growth. Because the major crux of these episodes is that Won decides to go after his sister and try to take over the company.
We already know that Won’s goal is to protect Sa-rang, almost everything he does is based on this desire. But this week he realizes that in order to really protect her — and to protect all of his employees from mistreatment — he needs to be in charge. A couple of things happen to lead him to this conclusion. First, Hwa-ran holds a press conference where she takes credit for rescuing Sa-rang from her almost-inevitable mountainside doom. And Sa-rang is commanded to sit beside her and read from a script where she corroborates this story.
At the press conference, Hwa-ran does her best Karl Marx impression and tells the reporters that it’s true that companies want to maximize profits, but it’s the employees that generate those profits for the company (and this is why she rescued Sa-rang). She goes further, saying, “The employees are the true owners.” This whole schtick is good for PR, but in a private discussion with Won afterward, she says the exact opposite, telling him that the company owns the employees.
Won doesn’t believe that a person’s worth can be calculated with money and he starts to see that with Hwa-ran in charge, work conditions will not improve at King Group. After a pep talk from Sang-shik, and some buddy-buddy time with Sa-rang’s overworked besties, Won sees that the only way to protect the workers is to claim his power in the company.
The second motivator for Won this week has to do with an obscenely wealthy prince that comes to stay at the hotel. The setup for this is that everyone in Korea wants this VVIP guest at their hotel, where he’ll spend tons of money. But Won and this prince happen to have gone to business school together, so Won calls him up to ask if he’ll stay at the King Hotel. The two are hardcore frenemies who can’t wait to get in a jab at each other, and so, PRINCE SAMIR (Anupam Tripathi) agrees to stay at Won’s hotel on the condition that Won will be his servant and say yes to anything he asks.
As you can imagine, lots of nuttiness ensues from this arrangement, but the outcomes are twofold. On the business side, Won is forced to act as chauffeur, open doors, wait tables, pour wine, and whatever else the prince asks, which gives him a taste of what it’s like to be a service worker. He finally starts to understand just how crappy these jobs can be and the kinds of jerkiness the employees have to put up with. And his empathy pushes him on the path toward becoming his father’s successor.
The other outcome is that Won gets insanely jealous when Prince Samir takes an immediate liking to Sa-rang. With so much money and power, no one wants to say no to the prince, and Sa-rang treats it as part of her job to dine with him, take him sightseeing, and attend a “party” that only includes the two of them — and Won, who’s serving the food and drinks. (Side note: I’ll take a working class Junho over a wealthy one any day. The boy’s got apron game.)
Sa-rang and Won have already made up after last week’s little fiasco with the birthday heiress. When Won showed up at her house at the end of Episode 6, it was to clear the air and make it known that he doesn’t have a girlfriend. Sa-rang’s outburst (“Then why did you hug her?!”) gives Won the warm and fuzzies when he sees that she’s jealous. He says he’ll make sure there are no more uncertainties between them and they move on.
But as Sa-rang acquiesces to the prince, Won gets to see how it feels on the other side. He tries to sabotage any chances Prince Samir might have by intervening on his romantic moves. The final straw comes when the prince proposes to Sa-rang with a rock the size of an island, and Won grabs the ring and pulls Sa-rang toward the door — screw their agreement! Sa-rang stops him, though, wanting to reject the prince in her own kind and confident way. This curbs Won’s boiling jealousy and our OTP seems pretty darn comfortable with each other from this point on.
And here is where we get to the good stuff. After all the teasing arguments are resolved and the prince finally leaves the country, Won asks Sa-rang out to “talk about us.” She meets him at a restaurant where the two are alone and Won acts as chef and server, bringing her course after course. He’s out to impress as Sa-rang delights in the food and even feeds him a bite of her pasta. Adorbs.
But Won goes a step too far in trying to act cool when his flambé sets off the sprinkler system, shutting down the lights and flooding the restaurant. Sa-rang drops her wine glass in surprise, leaving shards all over the floor, and Won whisks her out of harm’s way and onto the kitchen counter. It’s dark, their faces are super close, and it’s clear they’re about to kiss. But there’s a slow and tense lead-up until Won finally breathes, “Do I have permission?”
Holy %$#@&. Yes. It’s as hot as it sounds and there’s almost a full two minutes of kissing afterward with wet hair and literal steam. And here I thought these episodes were about to be boring.
Considering that it’ll probably take me a few years to get over what I’ve just witnessed, I don’t have much to say. As far as following the old rom-com playbook, yes, we got a kiss in Episode 8, but asking for consent is definitely from the modern edition. I’m always a big fan of permission seeking, but it also fits with the story here, knowing Won’s righteous character.
I was surprised at the intensity of the scene, though, given that up until now we’ve had cutesy antics without much tension. As much as I welcomed that kiss (and gawd Junho’s wet hair is so pretty), I would have expected less steam (or, at least, sans lip biting) to match the overall tone of the drama. When I think of other really great, super intense, kiss scenes from this year (Call It Love and The Interest of Love come to mind), the buildup to each was fraught with so much tension that the intensity was palpable and totally earned. I’m not sure we totally earned the intensity in this case, but whatevs, I’ll take it. If you asked me to unsee it, I would not.
Anyway, it’s obvious now that this was never really an enemies-to-lovers story but a straight-up romance. And while it feels like the romantic stakes were lowered a little this week — since it’s abundantly clear that our leads are gaga for each other — luckily, we have new stakes to contend with as Won prepares to upend the way his family does business. I’m looking forward to seeing how he handles it with Sa-rang by his side, whether they’re just prepping tablecloths together or they go all out and form a union. And, you know, if they want to get cozy in a kitchen a couple more times, you won’t hear any complaints from me.

Episode 7 was about how to lay a table cloth while staring at Jun Ho.
Episode 8 was much better. I feel both the actors look much relaxed and their scenes are looking more natural. I did like their Han River date and the sauna visit. Gu Won needs to spend more time with the friends.
I feel like the show forgot about the Noona romance we are all excited about. Why does cutie fight attendant get only 1 min of air time???

I haven’t seen the duty free cart in many years!!
I don’t even know if that shopping book exists. Most airlines in USA got rid of it.
Some beanies did mention that it’s still a thing in many European airlines. Though I haven’t seen it in British or Lufthansa (or I missed it while napping).

The low cost companies in Europe have it! After food is served, the duty free cart appears! Some companies have a catalogue from which stuff can be ordered online, too (don't remember which one). And others sell, after the duty free cart, a kind of lottery tickets, for which part of the sale goes to charity.

*ahem* Now that is how you do an episode 8 kiss.
This show spent like five minutes on a scene where nothing happens except the Leads stare at each other across a tablecloth. I should be bored. Why am I not bored?! That’s honestly the extent of my critical analysis.
Won is shaping up exactly as I’d hoped. He doesn’t care about power for its own sake, but does care about it to protect others. And I like that it started as just Sa-rang, but has already expanded to include her friends, and probably lots of other people in similar situations. I loved the scene where he was game for illegal sales activities, but then also had a moment to log Pyung-hwa’s desperation away as something to take care of later.
Shout out goes to Da-eul’s daughter this week, who is as disgusted with her father as she should be. I was hoping he was just a little careless, but it turns out he’s a real waste of space and luckily his daughter is not shy about telling him so.
Other highlights for me: The Red Sleeve reference, the smiling lesson for Won, the shy smiles across the traditional wedding ceremony, the best friends approving of and then reprimanding Won for not being straightforward, and the weird but nice frenemy bromance Samir left Won with.

All of this, yes, completely!
I’d also like to add the press conference scene to The List. When Sa-rang thanked Won … it felt so incredibly intimate. I swear I could feel my own heart beating through my chest, just seeing Won’s expression. These moments of understanding between the characters show just how much chemistry these actors have - whether they are “just friends” or more. Add in the perfect soundtrack … it’s a bit of magic, this show.

SERIOUSLY. I told my husband, this is what makes a Kdrama romance. I need my leads to be able to do nothing but stare at each other while folding tablecloths and I'm still transfixed.
Jun-ho is so good at acting like he's in love. And the character being so serious and unsmiling before makes it extra satisfying now.

The meta references were on fire this week. That silent nod to Squid Game too, and Won's "This feels familiar" made me warm inside for the first time. Until the kiss, of course.
The consent bit could have felt flat and ruined things, but it was done in the perfect way and people should take note and apply in real life, as needed.
I have always liked Joon-Ho as an actor, so I watched this drama for him. But this is how you do the episode 8 kiss in 2023. And I can see some growth in Yoon-A (she ruined a drama or two in the past for me) so... all in all, things are on the plus side with this one.

I didn't catch it either (I also have not watched that show), but I think it was when Won was looking through the clothing rack as the prince was getting ready for the traditional wedding ceremony. I've been pondering this for a while now: is King the Land Junho's attempt to follow in PSJ's footsteps, gain the reputation of romcom chaebol king, get the most YouTube views for a kiss, and then head into Hollywood? Certainly this drama is a not-so-subtle pitch for that role. And so far, so successful... :)

Um, are we going to talk about the portrayal of the Arab prince? As Kdramas get more popular world wide, they really need multicultural awareness coaches for the writers. That was hard to watch.

Aside from the points already mentioned by others in the comments, the bit that threw me off with the Arab prince is how oh-so-casually it's tossed into the story that the prince is there to buy warplanes from the Korean government — something that's so at odds with the almost buffoon-ish portrayal of the prince.
It's almost as if a bit of low-key messaging has been thrown in to say, don't worry about where our warplanes go; we only sell them to kind people who won't misuse them, even if they're rich and spoiled.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In any case, it made me curious enough to do a bit of searching, so I learned that SK is currently the no. 8 arms exporter in the world, with ambitions to become no. 4 by 2027.

@kdramacurious: Thanks for mentioning that insidious bit of advertising for the Korean military-industrial complex. The ignominious ranking is: 1. The US. 2. Russia. 3. France. 4. China 5. Germany. 6. Italy. 7.The UK. 8. Spain. 9. SK. 10. Israel. Additionally, Turkey’s drones equipped with explosives were used by Azerbaijan against Armenian civilians in 2021 in widespread war crimes.
Clearly, death, destruction and occasional war crimes are very profitable.

Junho yelling WHAT THE F**K?!? was the highlight of my week. The kiss took an honorable second place, though.
I wish the show had made Samir a prince from some unnamed imaginary country instead of generic 'Arab' 🙄 (which is a scant half-step up from generic 'African'). At least the whole sequence was made less cringey by making his and Won's relationship a rich-guys version of frat boy taunting and by his forward but generally respectful treatment of Sarang.

@elinor: It is a low bar as Anupam Tripathi is Indian and that was the closest they could come to their unnamed “Arab” Prince. The KD industry really needs to have some genuine etiquette lessons in lieu of genuinely appreciating diversity and inclusion one day (more neighborhoods like Itaewon would be great and obviously without tragedies).

True on this...learning a new language, and emoting in a language that is not your own takes a lot of work.
FWIW, I like Mr. Tripathi and in Squid Games, his portrayal of a Pakistani migrant worker was sensitive. Wishing his next few roles move away from the stereotyping. This kind of one note and racist role playing is already a problem in Indian cinema.

Oh goodness where do I start.
When watching these two episodes, I was hoping that the recaps would come soooooon. Because while there was plenty of passion (oh yes the eye candy and the ask-for-consent kiss), and the general unfairness of the flight attendant character getting literally two scenes I simply could not believe my eyes with the portrayal of the 'Arab Prince'. That was just distasteful and uncomfortable to watch.
It's too bad because Kdramas do have a growing global following and that sort of stereotyping is unfortunate. Why couldn't Anupam Tripathi have played a nice prince without the alcohol and the random women draped over him? Also was there no casting call for someone who was perhaps closer to that cultural background?

I agree, its quite unfortunate. Its really upsetting to see that it has become a "norm" when that really should not be the case.
When I saw the preview for this week's episode I immediately had a feeling of uncertainty. Of course if they wanted to, they would've put in the effort to find an accurate actor to portray the role properly.

I don't think we even got a full step forward. There were so many issues with the Arab prince plot. There was the blatant racism, but also the lack of consent. In an episode that should have been a win for getting consent, we spent 90% of it with our FL in an awkward forced romantic situation that she did not consent to. Every time our lead asked her why she was giving in to the Prince she answered saying it's her job. That is not consent. That is coercion due to a power imbalance. She was made to go on dates and outings with the prince (things not in her job description) to make him happy. And our ML only thought to put a stop to it because of his jealousy, not because she did not give her consent. And the show wants us to find her admirable for this, going so far as to have our ML adapt to her behavior. By the time we got to the kiss, I ended up feeling like the writer was just pandering. Especially having spent an episode and a half watching the FL be coerced for her job.

Indeed, I think we here in DB have a radar on this type of stereotyping. I immediately felt discomfort and anticipate some backlash. While I welcome having a more multicultural mix of faces in kdrama land, there is still some need for cross cultural communication and over-all training when it comes to treatment of 'foreign' subjects. Making them part of the humour is misguided. The actor is good, but the writing of his role is a bit lazy. I hope that as more korean films or drama scenes are filmed outside of SK, there will be more consciousness and respect of other cultures which get imparted to the korean audience, and not just the recycling of stereotypes.

I think the same thing about characters who have disabilities in Kdramas. Stereotypes, and no real representation.
Attorney Woo did pretty well with the characters but none of the actors had disabilities themselves. In Fight My Way and Oh My Ghost the characters in wheelchairs were seen as rather pitiful, always needing help and with limited social circles and activities. The movie Blind was ridiculous in the portrayal of a blind woman and her dog.
As for cultural representation, I liked how Itaewan Class poked fun at stereotypes with the joke assuming that the black character spoke English! And the one character in Gaus Electronics was also done well. I also think the blind character in the movie Always was done pretty well. But most are insensitive and none of the actors have a disability like their characters. As a global phenomenon Kdramas really need to improve. American shows are getting better but can also use some improvement.

Last week’s episodes of this show, starring Yoona and what’s his name (Taec, something, wasn’t it?) were so impactful in their exploration of the classic romance theme of misbegotten love in the midst of service worker exploitation that they prompted four of the smartest Dramabeans intellectuals, @attiton @dncingemma @elinor and @ladynightshade to discuss the show in the context of European social theory.
So I was quite eager to see what intellectual stimulation this weeks episodes would bring. Episode 7 was frankly a little disappointing. There were a few references to Said’s Orientalism, a lot of Mulvey on the male gaze, but except for some enthralling PPL, a fascinating discourse on table cloth laying, and video hightight tour of a famous palace, I didn’t learn much. I will say that I’m going to buy one of those royal male marriage hats to wear around the house; it could even replace the gat which pull on every time I go out!
Episode 8, though, was good. Very good. There was some cute flirting, some cuter flirting, and then some very watered down food with a side of steaming intimacy, which made me think of the classic line --“waiter-- there’s a kiss in my soup.”
One true story. The first time I kissed my wife, I also asked permission. So I felt after watching this kiss that Junho and I have a great deal in common, at least in terms of our romantic appeal.

Honestly though, I am watching this from a huge prism of susended disbelief.
Otherwise I would have been the first to call out the singling of a female service industry worker by a rich spoilt male and showering her with unwanted attention as copy book sexual harrassment (dressing her up? Really?). But the playboy Prince was cute, and our 'hero' was right there to save the day....

I’m also confident, being the modern man you are, that when you asked your wife for her consent, you also waited for her to use her loving words. There’s nothing hotter than a verbal “yes,” indeed, that’s what consent is.

I have to admit those scene where the prince was trying to "court" Sa-rang made me uncomfortable as she was at her place of work, in front of all her colleagues & bosses.
For once I understood how her colleagues felt having to stand there and attend to them.
Aside from that, the rest of the episodes were good. They could've done away with the arab prince plot (my spidey senses were tingling with imminent backlash) and maybe worked in some high end conglomerate/president of a company's son if they really wanted to show Won attending to someone else higher than him in terms of status.
The Won+sarang scenes were adorable but I do hope we get to see more of Pyeong-hwa & Da-eul's struggles as well. That lift lobby scene with Da-eul made my heart HURT :')) but I'm so proud of little cho-ryong dragging her dad YOU GO GIRL

Agreed. I cringed a bit at the prince's special treatmemt of Sa-Rang, who was supposed to be working! Wouldn't that classify as sexual harassment? I wanted more boundaries to be established between work and personal life with the prince. I was uncomfortable throughout those scenes...

I like these 2 episodes a lot. There are many moments that working-class people will relate to. My favorite was when Sa-rang answered Won’s question why she practiced so hard, just because she wanted to do well. Most of us are not privileged with money and talent, so we have to excel by keep practicing.
The kissss 🔥
I didn’t expect much from the kiss scene, but it’s because both actors are idols. It’s about time fans accept that they are 33, not 23. They can date anyone they like, get married, and have kids. And it’s all outside their singing and acting career.

I get that the role that Anupam Tripathi played here could be perceived as insensitive and I do think comments like the ones here will have an impact with future shows. I also think that we haven't seen the last of Prince Samir. The way that they were sort of buddy buddy at the "dinner party" would lead me to believe he's going to play a role in the end where he is going to help Won out in his battle with his sister. Remember his dad told him and his sister to invite him to the 100 year celebration. BTW, the showing of the Squid Game uniform did get a chuckle out of me.

I'm sort of in the same spot as you. There was a need for Won to have a foil/competitor like this from his "old" days, but was that particular background really necessary? I suspect there's going to be some arc related to this in the future.
The character was never meant to be a reflection of his culture. I felt he was *supposed* to be the opposite of it, in fact. Just from the way that Sa-Rang rose above *both* men signals that strongly. In the producers defense, they are just as harsh on the rich and powerful in their own country's abuse of people and power.
Who know? We'll just have to wait and see.

Ah all the stares! Stare after stare after stare. I get it! You guys are in love. It’s okay. The kiss was fire though and the consent made it even better! Consent is everything!!!
Ali as an Arab prince did not resemble an Arab at all and I totally understand the controversy around his character arc. I cringed at his behaviour towards Sa Rang but I realised it must be true. People with money and power can get away with whatever they want just because they can and it’s the ‘poorer’ folks who pay the price. Poor Sarang. I really felt bad for anyone in real life going through the same.
I did chuckle seeing the squid game uniform on the stand even though it shouldn’t have been there with all the other Joseon costumes.

Not exactly what you are asking (ML asking for consent and being told no), but it did make me think of this scene from Doom At Your Service, in episode 5: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8p9qUOPsCYU&feature=share9
She's the one who initiated it (rather than him being the one asking), but I did think it was a nice surprise (considering he wasn't exactly the sweetest character, especially at the beginning) that he not only picked up on her (non verbal) rejection, but also quietly let that go without making a fuss about it (and iirc, he never brings it up or complains about it later).

I'm happy to see Won growing up but it was a little bit easy that he knew the Prince. The guy just realized that people around him are working hard.
Sarang is just trying to work when rich heirs have so much time to make her whatever they want to. I'm not sure why she loves Won for now. He's clearly more caring then her ex but it's just because he doesn't work and can search for ideas of date, watch her working, etc.
The scenes with her friends are really nice. With the length of the episodes, they could give them more than 30 sec of development in their own story. When you own daughter says she doesn't want to marry someone like you, you think he would be affected... Like he's the only who works and is tired.

They really lay it on thick with the ramyeon PPLs, don’t they? I haven’t had these instant noodles but they must be high in sodium, artificial flavours including MSG? Yum. Good things then! I keep thinking Gu Won wouldn’t appreciate these ordinary staples as he probably was fed caviar, pheasants and ortolans in that extraordinary English pile he was supposedly living in but no. He loves every.single.thing. It is hilariously over the top.
Also, does anyone know why most animated opening sequences have characters who don’t appear Korean? I find it quite intriguing ad their features are very non-specific.

I feel like it's really common for animated characters not to look Korean (or Japanese or Chinese or whatever), so this didn't strike me as particularly odd. PPL or Product placement- I know the shows have to do this as a neccesary evil to survive but seriously episode 8 was overkill.
It felt like one big continuous ad for 12 (that I counted and were really obvious) different products, some shown multiple times throughout. The salt in the cooking shot was shown 7 times. The continual, obvious advertising takes away from the enjoyment of the show and I begin to feel manipulated and annoyed instead.
Surely there is a better way to do this. Tale of the Nine tails, episode 7 proved that advertising can be incorporated well with a great script and actors.

Before I say anything, the kiss was HOT. I didn't expect it to be this long & this intense considering that the building up of the sexual tension wasn't the focus of the episode ( Dramaddictally exactly voiced my thoughts. CIL & IOL ones felt earned through the tension. However, I'm definitely not complaining , if anything, it's the complete opposite)
Now onto the plot progression. Our leads are well smitten by each other & it feels so natural ( maybe because the actors are close friends irl so the chemistry seems natural). However, it was about time the power battle started & I'm afraid that Sarang is going to be dragged into it. I just hope it keeps its sweet & light tone ( I can look at them staring at each other all day <3 ) .

ROYAL KISS ANALYST FILES: ENTRY 9

Total Length: 1:51
Cut Scenes: 15
No. of Extant Camera Angles/Shots: 8 (I think)
Cuts Per Second Ratio: 1:7.4
Hand Placement/Movement/Positioning; Lip Action; Cheekbones/Jawline; Hand Structure; Atmosphere/Context/Story:
This was the Most Deliberately Indulgent Fanservicey kiss I’ve ever frakking seen adlkfjhadlkjfhak
The manufactured Sprinkler Fiasco? The utter over the topness? Styling Junho like THAT because he’d look better when wet? The camera framing on (wet) hands and jaws and lips to the point where it felt almost WRONG rewatching????
Asdfghjkl, they knew EXACTLY what tf they were doing. I kinda hate that it worked too because it was SO OBVIOUSLY EXTRA GRATUITOUS-
(I laughed, tho)
The food date was cute and thematically consistent at least.
Song: I was FAR too distracted to pay attention to the song the first like 5 times. It’s generic but sweet; it’s fine. The soft voice and violins work really well.
Bad: I could argue that it was TOO indulgent and TOO sexy HAHAHAHA.
“But, Sic! A Kiss scene can’t be TOO Sexy!” weellll… *pushes Snobby Royal Kiss Analyst glasses farther up her nose*
Some kiss scenes are only there for the trope, to be gratuitous, to be, you know, the KISS. This is Dramaland, obviously.
But a truly great kiss scene should, imo, like everything else, also add to and fit to the story. It should help tell the story or help us get to know the characters more. It shouldn’t be just indulgence for indulgence sakes.
Now, this is, pfft… King the Land. I’m not watching this for uhm, any great example of, well… anything.
This is a silly rom com watch that I watch with the lowest of expectations, and when it delivers on that, it’s fun for what it is.
But, as this is a formal Kiss Analyses File, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also want their serious conversation that he promised, instead of, or as well as, a serious kiss… 😂😂😂
Bonus Points: Permission Asked ✔
Overall Ranking: For how much food Junho eats in this drama, and how often food is used as a motif, AND for how much PPL there is, where is my Junho x Melona nod-to-JBL cameo? As the Queen of Melonia, I demand it.

This was such a powerful scene. It was also the one that was most frustrating, in terms of its sheer power imbalance. While the drama sugar coated it, he did force her submit in real life if their history is to be believed. To feel that kind of unrequited love for life was his ultimate punishment I guess. The fact that he could never love another woman again speaks volumes of human's ability to mate just once in their lifetime that can cut across class.

I think that Pyung-hwa's secret is she had an affair with the sleazy pilot. Hopefully, she didn't know that he was married, and not had willingly been his mistress.
In the never-ending tablecloth scene, why did Won not once ask where the other employees were? If Sa-rang's co-workers hate her already, then they're going to really hate her when they find out that she's dating the boss. I'm surprised that they haven't caught on with how obvious Won has been always going to the lounge and asking for her, not to mention the most obvious taking the company helicopter to rescue her.

I am definitely in the minority clearly but the romance is not working for me. This when I am a very easy to please audience in this genre! The steamy kiss notwithstanding, I just feel like the cutesy-ness of the romance is very forced. The situations that the couple are being put through seem very unnatural and even the humour is not landing. Its a waste of Jun-ho who can do such wonders with good writing backing him up (e.g The Red Sleeve).

The power imbalance has been there in other stories also (Business proposal for example), actually too many Kdramas have that issue. Its not like two people with power imbalance cannot fall in love(no matter how one views that love), something else is just off. Maybe the fact that she introduces him to the trials of the working class in a rather banal way is not a reason enough for them to have this cutesy chemistry or maybe its just the absence of chemistry (which wasn't the case in Business proposal).

@panshel Believe it or not, real life relationship can have very little bearing on how they come across on screen. Sometimes real life pairs are the worst on screen. Real life couples can be as dry as sawdust on screen (Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were terrible in Eyes Wide Shut, had absolutely zero chemistry). but often best friends have a sizzling chemistry as they are so comfortable with each other (Outlander is a great example, where Sam Heugan and Caitriona are best of freinds and have searing chemistry on screen, even when Caitrona just got married and was pregnant during season 6). I think the lack of chemistry in this is mostly Yoona, she is a non actress and has a part that's been written inconsistently and she does not have the ability to bring her own interpreation to the table like Junho is doing (he is doing a great job in adding some layers to his otheriwise one tone character).

I definitely feel like Won's feelings weren't well developed at the beginning, but Jun-ho is selling the hell out of it so I'm still enjoying it. At least the drama is letting the leads breathe unlike another currently airing romance drama.

You are not alone. To me, it feels like bromance more than romance. But I am loving Junho in all the extra he is doing. That egg eating scene was genuinely funny.
Honestly, you can fall in love with someone without rhyme or reason. I like what they did on Junho's part. He fell for no reason and that's fine. What I don't understand is why Yoona is falling for him. Is it becasue he is rich and extra? Is it the novelty? She often treats him like a churlish brother than a boyfriend material.
Their kiss was hot though. But then, you could replace Yoona with any XYZ actress and the effect of that scene would have been same.

Well it looks like I’m gonna eat my words? I appreciate the two friends story lines. Da-eul never catching a beak, working full-time while also solely taking care of her child and doing the household chores with no help from her godawful husband. It’s sadly representative of the role of many working (and non working) mothers. This is statistically a problem in many societies. When women joined the workforce, men didn’t suddenly contribute more equally with household tasks, all the burden is still put upon the women. Da-eul deserves better and I hope she divorces her good-for-nothing husband!
Pyeong-hwa’s workplace seems to be the worst. From unethical (and honestly imo illegal) weigh-ins to the sexual harassment to being forced to sell goods on top of her normal job as a flight attendant! I hope this time we’ll at least see some repercussions for the sleazy asshole whose always harassing Pyeong-hwa.
That said, I guess there’s finally a flaw with Sa-rang. She’s honestly seemed too perfect to me, however her self righteousness is too rigid, especially for scolding her friend for doing something ‘illegal’ when she has no other option. I hope she later understands not everyone has the privilege to build themselves up through ‘legal’ means. Yes Sa-rang is competent no doubt, but she also has the privilege of beauty, so I kinda laughed at the scene when the staff who work at King The Land apparently ‘earned’ their spot for their ‘hard work’ when really some are born into wealth and therefore can get better education while others are born pretty and can use that to their advantage. Everyone works hard and luck is definitely involved.
Yeah I’m not gonna talk about why Samir’s stereotyping is offensive and is deeply rooted in the racist and insidious nature of Orientalism. Watch Lindsey Ellis’ video on the topic if you’re curious:
https://youtu.be/XrhrXTDeue0
Last week Sa-rang scolded Won to take into consideration the employee’s time when he asked one of the chefs to make a last minute cake for her birthday. Won taking the message to heart and apologising to an employee for making him work overtime was a nice progression to see. The drama also seems to understand workers exploitation especially this week when there was a discussion about employees being the owners of the hotel, yes it was mitigated by the sister’s spiel how she was in fact the owner and the most important person. But regardless I’m uncertain where the show is going with this. Won doesn’t want the employees being treated unfairly, but I wouldn’t call it a win if he takes over since it’s still nepotism no? And he as an individual would still hold all the power, not the collective ownership of all the employees and workers of the hotel

@linarrick Very insightful.
I find Sa-rang's holier than thou attitude a bit taxing. However, to be fair, I am not sure if it's the character or the actor that is making me see her that way.

Yeah it’s a bit grating. But at least she has a flaw? Otherwise she seems too perfect to me, and thus a boring character to watch. I like having FLs with flaws, as much as Bo-ra from TRUE TO LOVE was annoying (and misguided a lot of the time) seeing a woman being a complete mess was refreshing. We do get such characters time to time. I also liked Oh Hae-young from ANOTHER MISS OH for the same reason.

This show just keeps getting more and more ridiculous. And I can't help but compare this to A Business Proposal. Even though I prefer Junho's take on the tsundere boss, at least Kang Tae Moo actually acts like a boss and does his job rather than just moon over the girl. Or perhaps I easily get irked by KTL's lack of actual plot 'coz I'm watching it together with See You in My 19th Life. 😅

Most things have been mentioned already by other beanies, but at the moment I'm rating the kiss as the best kdrama kiss so far this year.
I was disappointed that the writers resorted to the old school tie connection for Won and Samir as it took something away from Won's competence overall, I would have liked the route to winning the prince over to be less straightforward. It also didn't show his sister as being less fit for the job as women often are disadvantaged by old school networks or lack thereof. But I'm nitpicking possibly.
I enjoyed the tablecloth scene, when Sa Rang was smoothing down the tablecloth, Won was looking at her like he wished he was the tablecloth- perfect 😍.

I'm glad you brought up the school connection and sister's lack of that connection - I hadn't thought about it that way before. I do think, however, that the real selling point for the prince's stay was the ridiculous contract designed to humiliate Won, so rather than show that he was more competent than his sister, it showed how far he was willing to go to make the prince choose their hotel. I think it was a good first step to take that showed us his level of commitment to his new goal. And she's shown us that she's not the right person for the job in lots of other ways!

The humor was front and center in Ep 7 as Sa-Rang’s girl friends got their shots in on Gu Won in the most basic sit-com script way. I wish they would have interrogated him as a potential boyfriend then merely a colleague. The hotel humor also took the basic set-up of college friends “pretending” to prank one over the other in order for the other to succeed. Samir and Gu Won are basically two sides of the same rich university coin: wealthy man-children. The only mystery was how jealous Gu Won made The Switch, but it was too easy.
Squid Game sweat shirt for Samir’s dressing room as another easter egg to not take this show so seriously. Tricks are up everyone’s sleeve. The friends bonding while doing illegal activity that really hurts no one was fine. It taught Gu Won more elements of being a sincere human being and what real friends do for each other. It finally pushed him to make his move.
But the move was lackluster and the particulars not impressive. I still don’t know what Sa-Rang sees in Gu Won. Does she continually fall for the jerk? Her suddenly jealousy at the birthday party was totally out of character for a level-headed, responsible, career woman on the rebound after a bad relationship. His jealousy when she was with the Arab prince was also off-base. Ias that the foundation for their dating? One would hope not. He basically stalked her during both work and off-hours. He is not a prince; he basically continues to be condescending toward her (“i’m good at everything.”) The long (by recent standards) kiss scene was meh. For a show that does not want to be too serious, I cannot take the leads relationship that serious as well.
This is not a Cinderella story since Sa-Rang is not running away from a bad or desperate family situation. It is a chaebol cherry-picking an employee for a relationship. I don’t know how she fits into the upper class. As seen so far, she is a competent worker catering to the rude, cruel and demeaning demands of rich guests. How would she fair as the new daughter in a such a family?
What is distracting is the hotel politics. And the highly critical reaction to the Arab portrayal by an Indian actor and his alcohol and womanizing behavior has put the producers in a PR jam. Comedy can be the exaggeration of stereotypes but there are limitations.

Ah! What a slight adjustment of expectations can do!
I think I have finally baorded the cruise ship. For the first time I logged in without expectations and it gave me all the good feels I was missing. Given this is still not a drama that keeps me glued in - I can still take plenty of breaks and come back, but it left me smiling at the end of it.
Junho in his relaxed mode is SO good. His charm was everywhere this week, and I am now on a neutral ground even with Yoona just because they are so effortless with each other. She shines when she is interacting with him. The Red sleeve reference gave me goosbumps seriously. I wish they had cast Se-Young in this.
Absolutely loved the Sauna scene, and the date scene.
The 'nobody' theme is done beautifully. I can see a David vs Goliath battle coming up as Gu Won's battle with his sister heats up.
Oh, and so far the BEST kiss ever. My screen went up in flames! TV drama God please take note, how to do sensual without being explicit. Clap clap clap.

I liked the episodes overall but Won's behavior with Sa-rang and the prince really made me cringe. Like, dude, it's not like she's actually gonna fall in love with him, she's just humoring him. You're interfering with her job and risking violating the contract that you willingly signed. Won really broke the contract many times, and he's lucky that the prince was actually pretty laid back about it.
That kiss was amazing, though, and this drama imo is a good reminder that the romance dramas need to focus on the leads and their relationship first and foremost.

Honestly I was expecting that trope to be cringier than it was. Maybe because I had lowered my expectations so much that it came acorss as slapstick it was meant to be. The whole lot about proposing to Sa rang was SO over the top. I doubt Sheikhs go around proposing to random non Arab service industry women lol! And a man in town to talk about war planes falling for a white robed janitor ruse? Ha! The ridiculousness of it all LOL! Junho in the same setting in a space of two years emitting two different vibes....I was reeled in. I like my actors who know what they are doing. Full marks to him just for this.

First I held my breath. Then with the "may I have permission" I squealed. Then my jaw unhinged with the first half of the kiss. By the second half, I am sure my jaw was on the floor. Then there was the lip bite and it was all over. THAT KISS! I am certain that sprinkler kept going because it sensed there was still a fire happening 😂
I'll admit, this is the Junho show for me and I'm here for it. I had no context to Lee Junho before (no, I don't live under a rock 😅, just on the other side of the world) but his acting has been a delight and a revelation. He switches so seamlessly among being haughty, arrogant, jealous, comical, vulnerable, charming, endearing, besotted and in this episode, primal. I am genuinely entranced by his acting because he makes the simplest scene feel nuanced and layered. And then he looks the way he does and 🫠(Btw may KTL's wardrobe design team be richly blessed for that black monochrome look, that robe and that white shirt with enough opacity when wet).
My fav scene with YoonA so far was definitely Sarang's jealous scene in episode 7. Her flare up so sincere and absolutely adorable! That "is your chest a public rest area" line had me weak laughing. I'm still chuckling thinking about it now.
My MVPs are Da-eul and Pyeong-hwa -the best bffs any girl could ask for. Looking forward to their happy endings just as much as I do for our main couple.
I agree with everyone that the Prince Samir character was problematic. I do think to Anupam Tripathi's credit, he infused warmth into a character that could have been extremely sleazy and even more disrespectful in the different hands. Like others said, I look forward to seeing more of him in different roles to show his versatility.

Umm, are you me?! I agree with everything you said: THAT KISS *fans self*; Junhos superb acting (he has such a way with subtle gestures, like when he pulled the chair out for Sa-rang and then touched the back rest as if he wished to be touching her… not that I’m reading too much into it!); that monochrome black suit outfit was *chef‘s kiss*; the friendship between Sa-rang, Da-eul and Pyong-hwa makes me want to join them every time for dorky fun, drinks & dances etc. (Also I’m hoping for a little bit of more screen time for them!)
This show is just so much fun, and as was mentioned many times before, I didn’t know that I needed it so much right now.

Cannot argue that we might have different tastes considering Junho 😆
But I must say that I was surprised and like YooNa in this drama, maybe first and foremost because I’ve only ever seen her in The K2 before. (But to be fair, that „damsel in distress“ role did not offer much to begin with…) But here she does well, there‘s superb chemistry between the leads and so for me, it’s a joy to watch!
Slight glitch in her role here though was the scene at the birthday party. Her distress was only explained by her jealousy, while actually I thought that a feeling of inferiority (classism) might have caused it, too. Seeing Gu Won interact easily with the VIPs and realizing it’s „his world“ and not really hers, etc. Does not seem to be a problem at all right now. But that’s due to the writing, not her acting.

@redfox He is not the greatest of actors, and agree he is not the kind who successfully separates the character from the actual person that he is. However, I truly cannot argue that he has the two things that make a star - dominating screen presence, and ability to make you root for the character. Junho is - Junho, no matter what role, but he does have these nuances which work well in every role he does, and he is very natural in front of the camera, so his body language is fluid (in contrast to say, Taec, who can be stiff in places where he is not sure how to speak to the camera, or tone his expressions up or down).

I have to agree. I was at the fence in the beginning, but this guy can act. He has the layers and surprisingly, he has matured from his Red Sleeve days whiich is saying something. I am so impressed by his ability to turn something mundane into interesting. Even the way he was sitting at the sauna was classy. And he looked so natural in that egg scene. He had this innocent look of a kid who had discovered candy for the first time in a free for all candy store hahaha! Even the love of his life took a back seat at that moment. Nothing, repeat, nothing was more important in his life at that moment than savoring those eggs. It was SO good.

Episode eight...really great. For those that think he's not a good actor...all it takes is the kiss scene to prove he can. It's not easy to convey such intensity and passion when cued by the script...not to mention being so adept at the 'lip yoga' he did so enthusiastically with Yoona. AND I'm now a fan of Yoona too. She was younger and inexperienced in the K2 back then, but it never interfered with my enjoyment of the drama.
Bottom line? We are lucky to find a good, heart-fluttering rom-com at this time, given that we're in the 'thick of thin times' for the old classic romantic comedy. This one has given me hours of laughs and swoons for two very cute and direct leads who who help make each other better human beings. Grateful for the love and fun in this!

Agree, this drama has never sold itself as anything other than a fun romance - from the posters, to the trailer and all the promo stuff and I think that the majority of audience that are enjoying it are totally here for this. It’s a sign that maybe K dramaland was long overdue for something like this (with the notable exception of Business Proposal). While I watched BP casually I’m in the minority and didn’t manage to board the OTP express in that one. I don’t think I could get over the beginning plot setup where the FL attempts to put off the ML - it was too cringey. This casting for KTL works for me and I’m enjoying this as an homage to K drama rom coms of years past with the most welcome and refreshing update to the all important first kiss - with permission of course ;)

I don't deny Yoona was new to dreamland in the K2. But I still think the script did not do her justice at all. I believe that a different script (by which I mean a writer who would have cared about her K2 character) could have helped her to explore her acting range much, MUCH sooner!

This show thinks it slick with the water symbolism. I see you King the Land.
Just want to say the director is really nailing the brief here. The scenes are wonderfully shot and , the charisma of the actors is duly encouraged and the comedic and intimate timing is ridiculously on point. I am so surprised by the this especially since the first three episodes were giving cliche. King the land is outdoing itself so well in this lovely gradual manner.
The script is becoming quite self aware and subtly layered too. Loved the turn around of Gu Won and the nuance of his mom and Sarang in his choice to protect others. They could have gone a different way but this keeps showing the considered way always. Love love love

I am always late to these comments, as I can't stand the wait for new episodes (A Good Day to Be a Dog is KILLING me right now), so I usually save my viewing till things are complete. So, sorry about that. But about that kiss....
The thing that really got me was this subtle moment where Junho started breathing faster, like he just couldn't quite catch his breath. That's the kind of beautiful little detail I'm coming to expect--something you rarely see in American dramas but that just gives the scene an extra meter of depth. Loved it.
