Heartbeat: Episodes 9-10
by solstices
Love is in the air this week — while our heroine starts to catch feelings, her romantic rival has decided it’s time to make proactive advances. Meanwhile, our hero may be clinging to the past, but his heart is in the present. He’ll need to tread carefully, though, because a certain CEO has caught onto his supernatural scent.
EPISODES 9-10
Now that he’s realized Woo-hyul is a vampire, Do-shik tries to test the waters by asking In-hae if she’s noticed anything strange about her housemate. Do-shik’s fishing for information, but he doesn’t get any; In-hae deflects his suspicions, coming to Woo-hyul’s defense as best as she can.
Later that day, Woo-hyul returns home in a funk, having had his entire existence thrown into turmoil with the news that his lifespan may not last much longer. In-hae’s perceptive, and she clocks his downcast demeanor, but Woo-hyul pretends nothing is wrong when she expresses concern.
Woo-hyul’s mood only gets worse when he accidentally overhears a conversation between In-hae and Hae-won, in which In-hae admits that she has no plans of dating Do-shik for the time being. With his matchmaker scheme utterly thwarted, Woo-hyul can barely enjoy his date with Hae-won. She points out how beautiful the flower field is, but Woo-hyul muses that when he looks at the daffodils in full bloom, all he can think about is how they will soon wither.
Bottling his troubles up has only made them simmer and fester, and Woo-hyul eventually ends up lashing out at In-hae. Yes, it’s all her fault — for opening the coffin, for ruining his plans, and for having poisonous blood. Storming out, Woo-hyul heads to his buddies’ rooftop haunt, where he drowns his sorrows in instant ramyun and junk food.
The guesthouse welcomes its second lodger, who’s a jovial and chatty dad who makes a delicious breakfast of French toast for In-hae and her other guest like they’re his daughters. It soon becomes clear why, when Toast Dad opens up about how he’s drifted apart from his wife and daughter living overseas. On the rare occasions he’s able to visit, he can’t help but wonder if they find his presence burdensome.
In response, In-hae comforts him by sharing her story. She resented her missing father for a while, feeling like he abandoned her, but she soon realized that she missed him more than anything, and that she simply wishes he’s alive and well somewhere. On his way back from taking out the trash, Woo-hyul overhears In-hae’s honest words, and it puts her life thus far into perspective. Woo-hyul may have lost a dependable butler, but In-hae has lost a dear parent.
The neighborhood night patrol brings our duo together again, and Woo-hyul takes the chance to finally initiate a conversation. Still peeved, In-hae brushes Woo-hyul off, but a sincere apology from him finally gets her to speak — and she starts scolding him for staying out all night and shirking his guesthouse duties, though her words are clearly laced with concern.
As they walk back, In-hae admits that she has never experienced love, and she doesn’t think she ever will — the chances of her falling in love are the same as the likelihood of flowers blooming on the dead tree in their front yard. It’s an offhand comparison, but Woo-hyul’s gaze lingers on the tree, as if contemplating her words deeply.
The next night, In-hae returns home to glowing fairy lights on the tree, looking just like flowers in bloom. Moved by Woo-hyul’s thoughtful gesture, In-hae asks if there’s any way she can help him become human. Woo-hyul finally comes clean about needing her lovestruck blood, though it’s met with much confusion on In-hae’s part. How is she supposed to infuse her blood with love?
Confiding in his buddies about his current predicament, Woo-hyul decides to take their advice. Life is all about give and take, so our considerate vampire proposes a deal in exchange for In-hae’s blood. Woo-hyul offers to leave the mansion for good once he’s human, but the thought doesn’t please In-hae as much as it once used to. Aw, he’s grown on her!
Troublemaker Man-hwi decides to add trespassing to his ever-growing list of crimes this week, when he sneaks into Woo-hyul’s basement lair and discovers his painting of Hae-sun. He steals it to show Hae-won, and it only intrigues her further. Paying Woo-hyul a visit, Hae-won asks if she can see his basement room. Woo-hyul obliges, and when she asks about Hae-sun, he admits that she died a long time ago, and it felt like she came back to life when he saw Hae-won.
Finding Woo-hyul’s mysterious past too fascinating to resist, Hae-won suggests that In-hae throw a retro-themed party at the guesthouse. Not only will it attract more guests, but it’ll also serve as the perfect opportunity for Hae-won to ask Woo-hyul out. That last part bothers In-hae, but she doesn’t realize why.
As usual, Woo-hyul must maintain his title of fashion king, so he pays a visit to the tailor shop. To his surprise, the shopkeeper recognizes his name; it turns out Butler Joo commissioned a custom suit years ago, instructing the tailor to hold on to it until Woo-hyul comes to claim it. Woo-hyul relays the encounter to In-hae, and it rekindles a flicker of hope in her, though the lead is a dead end for now.
With Woo-hyul’s vampire friends pitching in to help with the preparations, the party launches to great success, ushering in an impressive turnout and a lively atmosphere. Amidst the crowd, Woo-hyul finds his gaze unconsciously drifting from Hae-won to In-hae. The same goes for her; tipsy from the drinks, In-hae follows Woo-hyul outside, where she confesses that she likes the mansion because Woo-hyul is here — so won’t he reconsider leaving, and stay here instead?
When they return to the party, the crowd chants enthusiastically for the hosts to take the dance floor. In-hae tries to usher Woo-hyul towards Hae-won, but Woo-hyul takes her hand instead, unwittingly thwarting Hae-won’s chance at the spotlight. Woo-hyul leads In-hae in a waltz, and as their gazes meet, it’s clear to Do-shik, Hae-won, and everyone else in the audience that sparks are flying.
Squee! I love the progression of Woo-hyul and In-hae’s relationship — as shown in the flashback montage, it’s been a gradual and organic growth process from petty bickering, to grudging respect, to comfortable camaraderie. I realized that Do-shik’s benevolence towards In-hae may know no bounds, but while he goes above and beyond to be considerate of her, his eagerness to support her sometimes causes him to overlook the unique quirks that make In-hae, In-hae.
Conversely, Woo-hyul may not be the most generous or courteous, but he pays attention to the details and sees In-hae for who she truly is. Do-shik may be capable of grand gestures that boost In-hae to greater heights, but sometimes In-hae just needs someone to reassure her that she can let her hair down and enjoy a night of partying.
Talking about Do-shik, his sudden chest pains landed him in the hospital this week, and his condition is looking more dire by the minute. With his time ticking down, Do-shik sees no other choice than to follow the instructions recorded in his family heirloom in order to cure his ailing heart — he must find a half vampire, identifiable by a scar, then carve their heart out and drink their blood. Oh dear. He’s already made it clear to Woo-hyul how much his cohabitation with In-hae perturbs him, so now that Woo-hyul is starting to emerge as a proper romantic rival, who knows what else Do-shik might feel compelled to do.
It struck me this week that our leads have all led fairly lonely lives. That’s clear as day when it comes to our main pair; In-hae had to fend for herself growing up, while Woo-hyul spent centuries in longing. Yet even our second leads, who seem like they have it all, are also isolated in their own way. The hotshot CEO Do-shik yearns for the simplicity of his bygone college days, and Hae-won, for all her self-assured affability, seems to hold herself at a distance from others.
It’s why I’m glad the mansion-turned-guesthouse brought these four together — they’ve all been craving connection and companionship, even if they aren’t consciously aware of it. If not for the tangled love lines and conflicting goals, they would’ve made a solid quartet. Unfortunately, it seems the train has long since left that station. I’m hoping they can all at least remain friends by the time cupid’s arrows are sorted out — that’s not wishful thinking, is it?

So many things to love this week. My mom's verdict: "A+. The last scenes were magical (like Beauty and the Beast). A+!"
I adored absolutely everything about their conversations, starting with ep. 9 with In-hae trying to figure out what was wrong with Woo-hyeol and telling him she has her eye on him, and Woo-hyeol being delighted and asking if that was stalking, and her countering by saying she's just concerned. So cute!! But more than just cute, I love how the drama uses moments like this to build and demonstrate their consideration for each other. They may not have gotten as far in the romance department as most drama couples by this point, but their relationship is being built on a firm foundation of trust, respect, and true liking.
Woo-hyeol briefly blamed In-hae for his not being able to love Hae-won as a human. But it was an act of denial because his heart isn't in it with current Hae-won, because he's already falling for In-hae. I think he only said that to In-hae because he was so hurt that she could think he despises her for her mistake. I thought their anger and hurt would last all week, but then he apologized (nicely!!) within the same episode!! This show keeps having them do and say things that normal people do and say, which is really nice. Woo-hyeol also learned a lot about In-hae this week, as did we - I love how she is both complex and mundane, and how her motivations and fears have become more clear. What a great FL character. And Woo-hyeol's face clearly says he adores her, even if his brain hasn't caught up yet. And OH MAN, that ep 10 ending - In-hae asking Woo-hyeol to reconsider the terms of the deal so he won't leave her, and then walking into that ballroom like a 1920s CINDERELLA for a straight-up DISNEY PRINCESS DANCE - it was simply magical.
One of the many things that delights me in this drama is how everyone so calmly accepts supernatural things, including Do-sik (and his secretary), who upon merely *assuming* Woo-hyeol is a LITERAL VAMPIRE, is essentially like, "ho-hum, I just as well take his heart and drink his blood, I don't have anything else going on," as if he were making a grocery list or something. I'd love for him to be as bad at vampire hunting as he is at interior decorating, but I doubt we'll be so lucky. Some questions: why was it so heart-fluttering when Woo-hyeol carried groceries for In-hae? And can we petition for our vampire detective's next mystery to be solving the case of what the heck happened to In-hae's dad?? 🕵️♂️

I’m more than happy happy to have your mom serve as the Fairy Godmother of the Heartbeat Hottest, Hopeful. Will she accept the job? Does she have her own wand? I bet she does…
These two are just in love. That’s all. The metaphor is that neither of them feel they have a “heart that beats,” but they totes do. We see it, and we’re just waiting for them to feel it.
That’s why, for me, it’s so great when Woo-hyeol helps out with the groceries like he’s In-hae’s actual companion in life. He is helping her, not just needing or desiring her. He wants to be, and is, there for her.
And, lastly, we have six episodes (!) to go, so I’m sure we’ll have more than enough time to investigate any and all fathers and or fathers-with-gold who might arise…I do hope too many more don’t show up, though :)

In sure she'd be happy to accept the job!!🥰 Yes - that's it exactly - I love the companionship in their relationship!! They're so harmonious with each other, being aware of each other's needs, and having actual conversations when they have disagreements!! I love seeing him want to be there for her!!

What I love that this drama is doing is showing that love is not necessarily that heart-pounding exciting emotion that our leads expect it to be. Rather, it can be concern and worry for another, feeling comfortable in their presence, and being able to forgive. It is both not the fairytale love and yet still is.

It was indeed startling! But Do-shik doesn’t seem to want immortality (or does he?), so maybe just to cure his curse he only needs to drink the blood and need not carve out the heart?

I don't need anyone to pull a Shylock here. Can we all be graceful about this. Like talk about it, share notes, find a solution that doesn't involved ripping anyone's heart.

Right? When In-hae asked if she was going to have to die, U-hyeol was offended that she would even think that. And then later she was totally fine with that part, "It's just like blood donation" and was just confused about the rest of it. I feel like U-hyeol is a reasonable guy, and if Do-shik just needs a little blood, that can absolutely be arranged. No need to get violent, let's all just share resources.

I was even more surprised that his ancestors would have somehow recorded this very special case in a book.
Was their world full of vampires that all woke up one day before the 100 years deadline and existed in limbo land for Do-sik's ancestors to have considered, tested and proven the "drink their blood" theory?
Also, what the hell? Drink their blood and become immortal... Okay. Where is Du-sik's immortal ancestor? the one who presumably tested the theory and wrote about it? Where is he now?

I mean honestly, that part was hilarious (but was it hilarious ON PURPOSE?). It escalated so quickly - "so bad news is we're cursed, but good news is if you can find a 50% vampire 50% human hybrid WITH A SCAR AND DRINK THEIR BLOOD, you'll be cured and also IMMORTAL"

I'd love for Cat Man or Woo-hyul or someone with more practical vampire knowledge to roll their eyes and laugh off that idea, the way the show has quickly blown away lots of other supernatural lore - for example, In-hae's scoffing dismissal of reincarnation and fated love.

My reading of Woo-hyul's outburst was not even based on his feelings (or absence of) for Hae-won. I mean, give this poor half vampire a rest. Woo-hyul's been told that he's dying because In-hae woke him up one day too early so... I think when he blames her, there was a lot of mortality angst in there too. If you've been told you could be dying soon and you find you have to keep the news for yourself because voicing it out makes it real and would mean not being treated normally anymore, then yes... I might be a little bit mad at the person who essentially ruined my almost 100-years-long plan.
Oh I am not human.
Oh the person I did this for can't remember me because I am not human. (or so I think)
Oh yes, and I am not a vampire either, I'm a bastard creature in between and I'm dying.
Well thank you, In-hae, dare I say that you and the recycling garbage can respectfully fuck off for the day? Thanks.
There are probably other layers of feelings too, as he's much closer and much more comfortable with In-hae than with Have-won. But if I were in his shoes, I'd be terrified about dying first. He's basically failed his mission to become human after secluding himself in a coffin for almost 100 years. And he went through the solitude of 100 years and the agonising discomfort and hunger for the promise of being a human who can love. The guy wakes up and he is a half vampire who can die. That sucks more than anything else for now!

I totally agree with this. He had JUST found out he was likely to die in like a month and not only is he immediately nagged about chores but it was coming from the person who caused it. It's understandable he lashed out emotionally but at least he did owe up to it and apologized. I liked that.

Ah, In-hae. I would follow you to the ends of the Earth just to hear you speak such truths so quietly and delicately. When you say them, they sink into my mind with a soft, unavoidable force.
Second, and more logistically-oriented, the Shaded Oasis Guest House needs a lock on its front door so that, I don't know, random people (ahem, rogue vampires with bedroom eyes) don't just walk in and take other people's crap!! Talk about a security breach...our first long-term lodger has every right to feel concerned about this.
Finally, a more pressing concern for me: What is it, on this green Earth, that Hae-sun uses to pay Man-hwi when he wants to feel rewarded for real? That scene in the car where money clearly isn’t what he actually wants has me on edge. There's an obvious answer—human blood—but that would suggest that Hae-sun knows who Man-hwi really is, and I still get the impression that she's not playing dumb about Woo-hyeol's vampiric nature..she truly doesn’t know. That would be unlikely if she was already aware that vampires are both real and also around her. So, what does the Beanie hive mind think about this?
PS: Now, show, with regards to lighting an actual fire under this glorious slow-burn romance, as Rose says in her flawless California intonation, "Let's go!!!"
PPS: As always, thank you @solstices for your charming and witty weecap. You have the full, undivided attention of the Heartbeat Hottest (name h/t @parkchuna and @indyfan).

Thanks @lixie! I’m 100% on board with your questions here, and will also take this opportunity to move a conversation that started a little lower, up here…
@indyfan has had some ideas, the most recent one being that it’s going to end up being about the gold bars. I mean, that’s possible, but isn’t that another form of money, something Man-hwi wants, but that isn’t perhaps thing that he actually wants? Man-hwi’s eyes (I mean who’s not looking at them) actually seemed hurt in that scene this week where he totally comes in hot, mad that Hae-won won’t pay him enough attention, but then she asks him to snoop on Woo-hyeol, stating, “I know you like money.” His face says, “That’s not what I want here.”
Sigh. OK. I’m hooked. I just took the time to scrub through for scenes with these two given these ideas. The first time we see them together, he calls her his “soulmate” (which would be more like your vampire lore theory, Indy, right? Or I guess Lixie’s “escort?”) but she brusquely dismisses that idea and calls them “business partners.” He’s clearly not buying that, though. Then, remember in that store when she’s all “Hug me (boy),” he’s all, “Shure, whatever, lady?” And then they discuss why she asked him to do that (and why it didn’t feel the same), and Man-hwi doesn’t actually care about what she’s saying until it’s clear that Woo-hyeol was the man who hugged her?
I could totally be over thinking this (ya think?) But maybe what my mind is actually doing is prepping for there to be a solid plot in which Do-shik has a real vampire to kill and rip the actual heart out of—like @marcusnyc20 wants below. Like a vampire face-off? That seems almost likely, doesn’t it??

They are so annoying because it's such a missed opportunity in my opinion! In the first eps I imagined it so easily!
She could have come from a long line of vampire hunters like DS but could have gone rogue when she became friends with one, which could or not be MH. We now know she doesn't know anything about vamps.
She could just be a rich woman using his special services to find other vampires because she has some kind of quest, again, we know it's not the case.
In all these scenarios he could have romantic feelings for her though being a villain he hates that and tries to hide it behind the mercenary motivations.
I know I was overthinking these second leads story but I love this kind of plot so I could not avoid doing it kkk.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the beauty of watching two people realizing love together. Two people who think they don’t know what it is to be in love yet slowly falling in love. Everything had been so subtle yet when that moment came it felt so grand. Over time his gaze has been leaving Hae-Sun and it landed on in-Hae. No grand confessions, no kisses, no irrational behavior yet that moment felt so right.
I loved the ball/party. Loved the retro theme. And when Woo-Hyeol was watching her from his balcony with those love filled eyes my heart skipped a beat. It was that moment, we knew, he loves. And when his ducklings remarked that he never dances it made that scene more impactful. And that dance was so beautiful and that lift!! 😍😍😍
He literally lived a lonely life not forming any bonds with humans. His entire existence was about waiting for Hae-Sun to return. So seeing him dance was 🥰
I loved that In-Hae had moments of jealousy but she never acted irrationally. Even their fight felt more like ‘getting it off their chest’ in an emotional moment rather than some misunderstanding. That’s what is great about these two. They are just nice people. They act like adults and talk like adults. I hope they can keep communicating like this.
I really wish she can accept his family of vampires. They are such a happy bunch.
I can see the dark clouds above Do-Shik and Hae-Sun. I am ready for what’s to follow!
Why does he have to rip his heart out? Can it not be a simple vampire blood donation 😅 and we could have resolved this like adults. Two-way human vampire blood transfusions and everyone lived happily ever after?
P.s I don’t remember the last time beanie wall went crazy with a show. Loving all the spazz!!

I think In-hae is well on her way to accepting the vampire ducklings. I can understand her initial alarm - U-hyeol has proven himself relatively harmless (unless you're trying to hurt her) but she doesn't have a lot of experience with any others - but the more she sees them being their dorky selves, the more attached she'll grow, I think.

Also, I am curious about how much power our ducklings have. In case we need backup, I want them to be there for Woo-Hyeol.

His male vampire friends are sort of grumpy with her too, so I can see In-hae being the type to be like "if you don't like me, I won't like you". But I think she's starting to count them as sort of the Woo-hyul type - yes they're weird, but harmless.

I also want In Hae to accept his vampire friends. They are just happy together and WH needs them in his life too.
Well blood transfusion may not be a thing during the ancient times when that book was written. I do hope it does not mean killing WH for DS to live. In Hae would have a lot to say about that. I do hope that it can also be resolved without sacrificing one for the other.
I enjoy all the posts about this drama in the fanwall too.

My reading of it was a combination of fear and being overwhelmed by social situations.
Fear because In-hae only trusts Woo-hyul in the vampire world. He came to her rescue. He showed she can count on him. So, she doesn't think of him as a vampire but more as a housemate/friend (technically also love interest but she hasn't yet admitted it to herself). She never considered there would be more than one vampire and thinking there could be a group of potential predators while she's on her own is scary. I believe she is open-minded enough to change her mind once she gets to know them and overcome her initial fear.
Social isolation I think also plays a big role. In-hae is someone we know to be solitary. She is fine meeting people when she needs to, but she doesn't have close friends she relies on. She is discovering relying on people thanks to Do-shik, but this is another matter. When you are on the solitary side and the person you can feel the most comfortable with is there having fun in your home (at least, what she thought was her inherited property) with his friends... I can see how she would have probably felt small in comparison and somehow would have wanted all them out.
I am waiting for her to make new vampire friends... and perhaps a cat friend too.

Wow, @darkcc, this analysis was just amazing. I’d never considered any of this, and am thankful to have been given the opportunity!
The line between loneliness and isolation really is being brought to the fore here by pretty much every main character. I’m now very interested to see how the show will allow them to really connect with others, and/or how well or poorly that plays out for them, given the approaches the characters will decide to take to exit their isolation (if they do at all!).

This is gorgeously said @mayhemf. I didn’t see it like this, but I can surely align to your view too.
In my perception, Woo-hyul’s gaze has always been on In-hae, at first for guidance in the 21st-century’s human world, and then as a trusted friend he can be honest with. In turn, In-hae has also been more honest and open with him than she’s been with anyone else. Their gazes have always been on each other. It was just that, at the time, they could still see the rest of world around. And during the dance moment, the rest of the world disappeared.
In-hae, for someone who has had limited social interactions in her life, is blessed with emotional maturity and intelligence. She approaches all interactions with honestly (unless she’s trying to hide Woo-hyul’s true nature). She also knows how to read through painful or scary comments. When Woo-huyl tells her he needs her blood, she explains after thinking about it that it is no different to a blood donation. When he tells her it is her fault, she doesn’t indulge in the typical self-pity scene of ugly crying and self-isolation. She stays mad, but she is open to resolving the issue later. I like that she acts like a proper grown-up, like the K drama heroin I’ve always wanted to see.
On the other hand, I spotted in the teaser for next week: Was Hae-sun going ballistic mad at In-hae for liking/loving Woo-hyul? Girl, please. You invested in the Guest House. You didn’t buy the vampire in it. Hae-sun, please, be the bright and sophisticated person we’ve seen so far. Please don’t give us that teenage angst and rage when you can’t get the fangy boy.

In-hae knows she is enough, but as you’ve asked us all to note, she’s enough while being very isolated. It is a painful joy to watch her start to wonder what it would be like to connect to, and share her experiences with, others, either Woo-hyeol (obviously) or, frankly, Do-shik.
She very much rejected Do-shik’s romantic advances but she can’t help but care a great deal about his health, running to his hospital bed as she did—it could confuse our vampire hunter, and he’d have good cause. She feels a connection to him that matters, and she needs to sort it out, it seems to me. I want her to be able to.

I wish I had something more eloquent to say other than: I love this drama so much. It gives me the heart fluttering moments I look for in a Kdrama, but it's not just empty tropes nor does it feel like I'm eating too much cake, like another airing romance drama. It's just perfect.
I had said in a previous comment that, if In-hae is not actually Butler Joo's descendent, it's likely she is actually the reincarnated soul of Hae-sun. This ep showed that her father really was Woo-hyeol's butler, so I find that encouraging that maybe Heartbeat will not go that route (again, I am still very prepared for it - but I can hope, right?)
I agree with the recap. Do-sik doesn't really love In-hae. He doesn't know her well enough to. He seems to love the idea of her, more than he loves her. I also wonder if he just likes taking care of SOMEONE, and it doesn't matter who, as long as they appreciate it. Woo-hyeol's gestures always seem more heartfelt and genuine. A metaphor would be like he really took the time to think about what In-hae needs (and in many cases, he does it without even having to think about it too long). Do-sik's approach is more just like buying her the most expensive thing possible without considering if she'd really like it.
Will Hae-won turn out to be a baddie, like Do-sik seems to be? I'm guessing yes, but maybe not. I sometimes like when the 2FL is an antagonist, I know that's not very feminist of me, but hey.
I brought this up in my Fanwall, but I'm wondering if In-hae's love has to be requited for her blood to be transformed. Logically it doesn't quite make sense, but it would certainly add a twist to the romance story.
Also, In-hae's retro dress was gorgeous. Even my husband commented on it. Rose looked gorgeous, too! I was surprised by how much I was unimpressed by Hae-won's dress. And, in terms of the dance scene, I've been rewatching it over and over again. I realized while rewatching that Woo-hyeol didn't actually say the line about liking the mansion because In-hae is in it, he merely thought it. The romance is taking its sweet time, but I have this theory that, the later they get together, the less likely it is they'll break up, so I'm okay with that.

I like to think that I’m excruciatingly good at suspending my disbelief. There is a golden fish made of energy and if you “catch” it you automatically level up? Cool. Lee Je-hoon is going to fight off 40 guys by himself and be essentially fine at the end? Sounds good. Every character has a childhood connection with their love interest? Whatever. But Do-shik’s ancestor somehow knowing that what they really needed was a half vampire? Hahhahahaha!! I’m sorry, what? It’s not like those are thick on the ground, seeing as how they result from vampires trying (and failing) to become human. Has that ever happened before this, ever? And half-vampires don’t have a very long shelf-life, as evidenced by our beloved U-hyeol’s mounting illness. So what on earth is ancestor spewing? How much trial and error could he have done? This man did not actually succeed in breaking the curse (which presumably also involved being bad at interior decorating), and neither did the next 10+ generations, and we are still trusting his absolutely wild intel? And ancestor was still chasing U-hyeol back in the day when U-hyeol was a full-vampire, so what does he know? It’s not that this in any way detracted from my enjoyment of this show, but that line in the all-knowing vampire book made me snort my drink out of my nose. Ok, I just needed to get that off my chest. Moving on.
That tree that “bloomed” was about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Until I saw the dance in the next episode and then that was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Did Hae-won looking thoroughly put-out off to the side make that scene better for me? Yes, yes it did. I love our leads so much and I really really love them together. I’ve been savoring every tiny step they take toward each other and it felt like they both made great strides this week. She likes the mansion because he’s there? My cheeks hurt from smiling so wide. Also, U-hyeol should wear his hair like that all the time.

Thank you for your testimony to the truth, @js943.
Could I ask you to turn your keen attention to what will be meant by “ripping [this half-vampire’s] heart out?” Do you think this is literal? If not, how figurative is it going to be and what form will it take?
Also, why does this half-vampire, which I agree aren’t a species everywhere to be seen, also need a scar to be recognized…and why have we not yet seen any scars? Do we actually have two of them, one scarred and one unblemished?
Please enlighten. We’re all ears!!!

I think the heart thing is probably literal, unfortunately. But I don't know how they could possibly know what works and what doesn't, so maybe it's all a load of nonsense. Unless someone like Cat Man was giving Do-shik's ancestor hints they way he is for U-hyeol's mortality quest?
And I agree with @hopefulromantic that the scar is probably the bite mark, but that doesn't show up all the time, it just seems to assert itself when In-hae's in danger. Does this mean Do-shik will intentionally put her in danger to confirm that he has the right half-vampire? dun dun duuuunnnnn

@Cecee made good points. Cat-man is a cat and the man can’t help it if he has RBF (I think the Hermès s-m-i-l-e propaganda got to me). Therefore, not smiling at the leads dancing cannot not be proof of his villainy.
However secondly, and more importantly why and how is Cat-man all knowing??
Regarding the gold, I think it’s in some random innocuous place, as in they forgot there was another trapped door OR remember In-hae’s father also left her some money as her inheritance?? Maybe the gold is in some safe at a bank??

Thanks you @solstices for the recap. I agree with you on this
This is what I like most about WooHyul, he is sensitive and attentive to In Hae. And this characteristic of his is what softened In Hae's heart to him. Grand gestures does not always capture a woman's heart sometimes its something like WH's sincerity and care for In Hae can be the key.
I love that In Hae admitted to Woo Hyul that she likes the mansion because he is in it and prefers he will reconsider his offer. This came a long way from their initial bickering and animosity. And I am in for it. I am such a sucker for enemies to lovers romance and with the addition of their gradual and organic relationship progression makes them a win for me.
I just dread what our scorned second leads will do. Do Shik is in desperate need of a vampire blood and with WH already getting on his nerves and add on jealousy. It can only spell further animosity from him. Hae Won does not look too happy with In Hae either and its unknown on what she is capable of yet. Man Hwi is also in a position to negatively influence HW which can turn her affability to outright animosity. I fear that it will go the way of the predictable second leads messing up the lead's relationship through manipulation and other underhanded techniques. I hope not but I will brace myself for the possibility just in case.
I did enjoy the party scenes especially with the vampire friends helping. In Hae appears to be softening towards them since she saw firsthand how happy WooHyul was spending time with them. Rose is the most sensible of his friends and would be nice if she can also be friends with In Hae.

@solstices Thank you for the recaps
Although I may not be overly excited or eagerly wait for the next set of episodes, this drama always leaves me with pleasant feelings at the end of each episode. The plot is simple, but engaging and the execution is so smooth with one act after another like a stage play.
I like how the writers are slowly building the bond between the leads with genuine conversations instead of with grand display of affection. I also like the second leads because they are not being pushy and keep themselves within their boundary, but I suspect it will fade in the upcoming episodes when they get jealous.
P.S: I want more of the vampire sidekicks because I adore their loyalty and concern for Woo Hyul.

I didn't like the first look, but it grew on me. I did struggle with the flats, it was definitely to keep her height down because of the dance (SK does seem to have a fetish for tall men and small women). Part of why they look so good is because of their respective heights and how well they compliment each other. I've lost the thread a bit and am not sure where to stick this but clothing:
So I get the earnest academic vibe from In-hae, overworked postdoc in environmental science sorta thing. Love all the tweeds. Dress seemed absolutely in character and gloves were similiar to Rose's who supposedly sourced this for her (side note: saw some article that pointed out im yoona did a shoot in this exact same dress, and talk about clunky grandma flats, but we are not talking about that drama) Anywhooo...her style is very much in contrast with our handsome ML's slick man-about-town look...very odd couple but works (especially on the porch together)
I find it interesting that the two leads haven't really been put in matchy matchy clothes yet...we've seen In-hae and 2ML in tweeds together and our ML with 2FL in similiar colors (their date) and even The FangGang in matching colors. But so far our leads are very distinct in their styles.
And yes, red seems to be 2FL's signature colour (did you see the car?) while 2ML often has a pleather thing happening. And that coat when he first met our ML - so two-face outta batman

Like I said in my fan wall I want a In Hae Barbie and a Woo Hyeol Barbie. Pick them up smush their faces together and making kissing noises 😘
I never thought I would love them together so much. They took massive strides towards each other in these episodes…In Hae a bit more than Woo Hyeol I would say and I love the fact they don’t keep secrets from each other. Just like you said ‘they act like how normal people will act’ so refreshing!
Now kiss already!!!

This is giving flashbacks to viki commenters, when it was free, we would leave the comments on and laugh. There was always someone who said NOW KISS, lol.

Sometimes I rewatch Viki eps or scenes just to see the comments.

They still do. When I first watching Viki, like a year ago, every second scene would have someone say, 'Kiss kiss kiss'. It did not matter what the scene was (and whether the ML and FL had any relationship going yet), as long as the leads were standing together. It was quite frustrating in the beginning, and then it got hilarious.

As @attiton mentioned, a lot of chatter happened on the site already. I hope it's OK to share some highlights (for me) in case anyone missed it. I know I used to:
The Best Barbie-Heartbeat Crossover
The Best Alt Recap After this, I was worried if there'd be anything left to say in the recap proper. Glad to have been wrong.
The Best Quote"KTL is an example of too much of a good thing. I can only speak for myself, and when I claim I want fluff, what I really mean is I want a depressed FL with money problems living with her vampire boyfriend in a gothic styled haunted mansion." --@linarrick
Not to shade KTL or anything. If you love both, aren't you lucky.

Thanks for these shoutouts…and there’s always more to say about HeartBeat!!
I happen to like Kingfisher well enough for what it is, but HeartBeat is on a whole ‘nother level. I very much hope that the former improves, becoming more complex, and the latter sticks its landing.

You guys I am absolutely adoring this drama. One thing I love about this drama is In Hae and her loneliness. Its not loneliness which is romanticised or blown out of proportion but rather one that was a result of losing loved ones early and simply trying to survive. It makes sense that she hasn't dated at all or never had those romantic feelings because the loss of her parents and absence of a support system made survival her top priority and Woo Hyeol recognises that. I love the way this couple communicates. He came clean with how he could turn human and did not withhold anything.
Also Hae Won is annoying. I don't know if its Yoo So Hee's acting or whether its intentional but every time she talks, my face contorts in annoyance and mild disgust at the overly saccharine delivery.
