Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

Love is in the air this week, drawing our leading quartet together and creating some sticky situations. Our lovelorn vampire navigates the overlap of past and present, while our pragmatic heroine gets the guesthouse up and running — but an untimely encounter poses a threat to the secret they’ve been trying to keep under wraps.

EPISODES 7-8

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

Hae-won’s response to Woo-hyul’s sudden embrace may be coyly flirtatious, but it only serves to reinforce the fact that she’s not the Hae-sun he knew. In the aftermath, Woo-hyul is uncharacteristically subdued as he tries to parse through his emotions. He feels like he’s let Hae-sun down by failing to become human, and he can’t bear to see Hae-sun’s likeness without her memories intact.

Unused to this glum, downtrodden version of Woo-hyul, In-hae tries to offer some comfort by bringing him a blood jelly dessert. She points out that his devotion to Hae-sun, and his dedication in waiting centuries for her, can also be a sign of love — it doesn’t just have to be physical signs like a beating heart. Her words strike a chord in Woo-hyul, who hadn’t considered such a perspective before.

It’s all Woo-hyul can do to focus on his goal of heating up In-hae’s blood and becoming human, so he decides to do just that. Playing matchmaker, he pushes Do-shik to take more initiative since In-hae isn’t the type to ask for help. Do-shik takes In-hae furniture shopping for the guesthouse, getting mistaken for newlyweds and reminiscing about their college days over lunch.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

In-hae invites Do-shik and Hae-won over to see the house, and Woo-hyul offers Hae-won a bouquet of flowers in apology for their awkward first meeting. The four have dinner together, and Hae-won offers Woo-hyul a prawn when she notices he isn’t eating. Remembering what happened the last time Woo-hyul ate human food, In-hae tries to stop him, but unfortunately she can’t win over social niceties.

Woo-hyul chomps down on the prawn, and his eyes immediately go wide with wonder. Relishing in the glorious taste of the ocean, Woo-hyul winds up grabbing a second prawn right out of Do-shik’s hand, then polishes the entire prawn platter off. In-hae can only huff in dismay, while Do-shik and Hae-won watch with bemused amusement.

Taecyeon Yoon So-hee Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

Before long, Woo-hyul is drunk as a skunk, and he totters over to Hae-won, calling her “Hae-sun” again and gazing deep into her eyes. Rushing to avert a disaster before it happens, In-hae drags Woo-hyul outside. Woo-hyul won’t sober up, so In-hae ends up having to sock him in the face, and that finally does the trick. Realizing what he’s done, Woo-hyul slumps onto In-hae’s shoulder, needing just a moment of comfort.

Later, the pair go back inside, and that’s when a lightbulb shorts out right above Hae-won, startling her badly. Woo-hyul sprints towards Hae-won at supernatural speed to save her from falling, and In-hae instinctively whirls Do-shik around to face her so that he doesn’t witness Woo-hyul’s vampiric abilities.

Once Hae-won is safe in his arms, Woo-hyul’s vision blurs, then he slumps to the floor, completely out cold. In-hae ushers their guests out, assuring them that Woo-hyul will sleep it off. However, while Hae-won is feeling all fluttery from her heroic rescue, Do-shik has clearly sensed that something’s not quite right.

While the mansion undergoes remodeling, Do-shik offers In-hae a temporary apartment to stay in for a week, and Woo-hyul decides to crash with his vamp buddies to avoid third-wheeling. After In-hae settles in, Do-shik takes her out for dinner, where he ends up admitting to his college crush on her — why else would he have frequented the mediocre restaurant she worked at?

College In-hae was as stoic back then as she is now, repeatedly stonewalling Do-shik’s attempts to start conversation. (Can I just say that bespectacled Do-shik is absolutely adorable?!) Do-shik had been too intimidated to confess back then, so he’s glad that they’ve reconnected.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

On the walk back, In-hae lets Do-shik down gently, explaining that she’d rather focus on the guesthouse for now. “Why don’t you love me?” Do-shik doesn’t ask. Instead, he takes it graciously, reassuring In-hae that he’ll continue to help out. Aw, it’s not a direct rejection, but it’s clear that neither romance nor Do-shik are at the forefront of In-hae’s mind.

That night, In-hae and Woo-hyul spend the night at their respective accommodations, but they’re so used to each other’s presence that they end up calling anyway. In-hae asks about his date with Hae-won, and Woo-hyul puffs up proudly when In-hae praises him for not slipping up in front of her.

Taecyeon Won Ji-ahn Heartbeat: Episodes 7-8

Before long, the newly-refurbished guesthouse opens for business, ushering in its first guest thanks to Woo-hyul’s handwritten calligraphy flyers. Awesome! To congratulate their opening, Hae-won gifts Woo-hyul a painting along with the car it arrives in. LOL, In-hae considers selling it to claim Woo-hyul’s debt, and Woo-hyul barely manages to convince her out of it.

Having heard about Woo-hyul from Hae-won, Man-hwi shows up to cause trouble. After pushing Woo-hyul’s buttons, he floors his car right at him — activating Woo-hyul’s vampiric instincts. Rather than jump out of the way, Woo-hyul stops the car with his bare hand in broad daylight.

Unfortunately, all that was caught on tape by Do-shik’s secretary. The dinner incident had rattled Do-shik too much for him to ignore, since he clearly felt Woo-hyul speed past him unnaturally fast. Can it be? Do supernatural creatures exist? When his secretary shows him the dashcam footage, Do-shik is finally certain — Woo-hyul isn’t human.

Oh no, Woo-hyul’s secret is out! I’m worried for him, but I’m also excited to see where this will take our story. Now that he’s seen proof of Woo-hyul’s supernatural nature, Do-shik is certainly smart enough to connect the dots with his family heirloom. Do-shik’s heart condition hasn’t been plaguing him recently, but I suspect it’ll start to flare up again, pushing him towards Woo-hyul for better or for worse. (Side note: we ended off this week’s episodes with Park Kang-hyun’s OST, and I am one happy camper!)

Not that Woo-hyul doesn’t have enough to worry about already — he’s just heard from Yang-nam that he doesn’t have much time left. Teetering on the border of mortality isn’t doing his constitution any favors, which means Woo-hyul must drink In-hae’s blood before the night of the blood moon, or else death awaits him.

On the romance front, I continue to swoon over Do-shik, but I love how our OTP can’t help but be drawn to each other. Beyond fate and first loves, Woo-hyul and In-hae share a connection built upon mutual empathy and rapport. Once fiercely independent, they’re starting to learn how to rely on each other, and it’s doing both of them much good.

It was cute to see a glimpse of our alternative pairings this week, but it also reinforced that this configuration isn’t where each of them belongs. Hae-won may speak lines that echo her past self, but Woo-hyul can’t see any hint of his own reflection in her eyes. As for In-hae, she may be grateful for Do-shik’s kindness, but the person she’s the most comfortable with is Woo-hyul. After all, home is where the heart is, isn’t it?

Thank you so much for the recaps, solstices! Your endless 2PM references (and Park Kang-hyun references?!?!) are amazing.

I really have to hand it to Heartbeat: it has all of this love geometry, and yet I am completely unfazed by any of it.

Normally when I start to get invested in a drama, I also start to get anxious. I become anxious that it will go off the rails, or it won’t deal with its tropes in the way I want it to deal with them.

But with this show, I’m kinda just vibing?

For some reason I feel very secure when I watch. The show has all this past life drama and all these second leads and yet it’s doing a remarkably good job at not making me worry about any of it. Both of our main characters went on “dates” with their second leads this week and yet I was chill as a cucumber the whole time.

Why? Oh, probably because In-hae flat-out told Do-sik that she appreciates his feelings but is not interested in pursuing a relationship. The obvious conflict here is gonna be Do-sik flipping out about Woo-hyeol, well, being a vampire, but I’m not even really worried about that. Do-sik miiiiiight be a vampire hunter, but this plot movement is happening a bit sooner than I would have expected, so I’m not too worried that it’s going to muddle the very end of the drama or anything. Also, frankly, if he DOES flip out I honestly can’t be mad at him. Vampires are terrible! Well, except for Woo-hyeol.

As for Woo-hyeol and Hae-won/Hae-sun, the fact that immediately when he met her again (well, after the whole hugging fiasco) you could tell that it just wasn’t the same? He knew right away that Hae-won is not Hae-sun. The whole “I can’t see my reflection in her eyes” thing is an easy way for the drama to showcase this, but it’s not just that, right? I anticipate Woo-hyeol is really going to have to come to terms with this soon. He knows it, he just hasn’t 100% accepted it yet. He still seems to be holding out a tiny bit of hope that they can somehow be how they were 400 years ago. That’s not how that works, buddy, I don’t care how many dramas you’ve seen telling you differently! I just hope he doesn’t hurt too much in the process of realizing this.

I’m really not a fan of fated love tropes, or past lives tropes, or first love tropes, so the fact that this show seems to be directly antagonizing those types of stories is exciting to me. Reincarnated people are NOT the same people (unless you’re Ban Ji-eum)! They’re different! You don’t have to fall in love with the person again! In fact, you probably shouldn’t! Because they’re not! The! Same! And after 400 years, YOU aren’t the same, either!

Another thing I really appreciate? So many times when I watch dramas, I keep saying these obvious things to myself that I really want the characters to say, and they never do, and I am endlessly frustrated by it all. But here? In-hae tells our dummy that he’s stupid for thinking he needs to feel a heartbeat to experience human love...

In-hae tells Woo-hyeol whenever he’s being a weirdo that HE’S BEING A WEIRDO and should really STOP BEING A WEIRDO. In-hae tells Woo-hyeol that Hae-won is NOT Hae-sun and he should stop acting like she is because she’s NOT she’s a DIFFERENT PERSON. It’s so refreshing to see and I hope it all continues.

In a similar vein, I love how there is absolutely none of the power imbalance that sometimes seems inherent in this sort of romantic setup. I have fewer issues with the “hundreds of years old immortal/supernatural being and human woman” trope than some people (I’m a fantasy novel girlie, I HAVE to be okay with it) but it’s always an extra bonus when the relationship is very balanced like it is here. The fact that he’s kind of afraid of her is great lol.

I also have a soft spot for soft heroes, and it’s even better when they could easily be a worse person(/vampire) and just… aren’t. I love Woo-hyeol. Part of this might just be that Taecyeon has such a warm and chill aura? The guy isn’t the best actor in the world, but this role fits him like a glove and I’m really having a fun time watching him here. He’s hilarious but he’s also hitting the sweet and sentimental romantic beats better than I expected. Good for him.

Soooo…. Yeah. I really am enjoying this show. I’m not sure I’d call it love yet, but it’s just a delight to watch and I’m actually excited to see where they go with the various plot lines. You have my attention, show! Let’s see what you’re made of!

P.S. I’m obsessed with the way Woo-hyeol keeps telling In-hae he cares about her without actually telling her he cares about her. I’m not even sure if he knows what he’s saying half the time, either. But, like, when Woo-hyeol told her that Do-sik wanted to protect her and he was all, “Well good for you for having SO many people who want to PROTECT you”. Dude, we only mentioned one. I think you might be projecting. Just a little bit. A tiny bit. And then when he said that 100 years could feel like one day, but one day could also feel like 100 years? BRO, DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SAYING???? Like I said: obsessed.

And when he cares for her, he does in a way that seems more genuine than the 2ML, who seems like he's just kind of throwing his money around. Or maybe that's just my perception because of my general anti-2ML bias, lol.

Another person impervious to the power of second male leads! Welcome to the club! We seem to be a rare breed.

That's the problem with rich characters in general, isn't it? Everything is just too easy for them. I much prefer a relationship where money isn't a factor.

Yes, I'd rather blood be a factor than money. I'd rather have vampires than chaebols. Call me crazy. Your average chaebol probably sucks more humanity out of society than a vampire does, anyway.

Not that Do-sik is a chaebol (he just seems to be regular rich), but you know what I mean.

Right, and Woo-hyeol's actions just seem more heartfelt and thoughtful than the 2ML's. It's kind of like a homemade gift versus a store bought one. And Woo-hyeol seems to understand what In-hae needs on a deeper level than just paying for things she needs or wants.

Nice to meet someone else who doesn't get SLS! I've only gotten it once and that was Start Up. I guess you could also say Doctor Cha, but that wasn't really a traditional ML vs. 2ML situation.

10

Can I join too? I think I'm all but immune to SLS. Every time someone says that they are giddy over something a SML does, I feel like I must have missed something hahaha! Granted, I haven't watched Start Up yet, so there is always room for exceptions that prove the rule, but I think my track record is pretty good ;)

8

Me too! ✋️ I don't get Second Lead Syndrome either 😂 Do-sik seems nice and all (so far), but it's not as genuine as the ML. And In-hae doesn't seem like her genuine self around him - she's a little too tense and giggly, haha 😅

9

@hopefulromantic Yes, she seems to tense up instead of enjoying it whenever Do-shik compliments her or expresses his feelings. In the flashbacks she's feisty but there's never a hint of flirtatiousness, and now she's so darned respectful to him - he's been thoroughly sunbae-zoned.

It's not a coincidence that Do-shik's family name is Shin and that's also the name of the vampire-hunting nobleman who killed Hae-sun, is it?

15

@elinor, I hadn't remembered that about the family name connection😱 THE PLOT THICKENS!! I wonder if he has any training? Or hunting tools in that in-office safe? Or if it's just the information that's been passed down... And lol yes - "sunbae-zoned" is the perfect description!😂

12

@elinor This is the second time today I need to thank you for recall - I had completely missed that vampire hunter connection.

3

@mindy I sincerely wish I was completely immune to SML, but then I met Park Hyung Sik in Hwarang and my run ended right there. Sigh! But if you discount that (High Society should not count as PHS was never a contender for the SML there), I never got it again (though I would not have minded if the SML in True Beauty had gotten the FL, but that was only at the end because of that mindless separation trope). But I never get swayed by SML otherwise. And DEFINITELY not by this SML. Jeolteyo!

@vienibenmio I don't like to watch dramas with romances where the leads don't end up together.

I am so happy to meet who shares this view of mine. I don't like tragedies in general and leads not getting together in particular.

Tragedies take too much headspace, and that to for a very looooooong period of time.

1

@vienibenmio: Did you watch “Mr Sunshine”? If so, how could you not have had SLS there?

I didn't especially like any of the three options for Ae-shin in Mr. Sunshine hahaha! I liked all three characters, but was happy she just ended up with her troops at the end.

2

I actually didn't watch that one. I don't like to watch dramas with romances where the leads don't end up together. Hence why I'm still furious at Strangers Again.

1

@vienibenmio: Please watch it despite that as it is far more complex than a mere romance. I am not a fan of Lee Byunghun and wished someone else had been in his role but the other lead actors (I’m using ‘actors’ inclusively) are exemplary. It is an epic story of struggle for freedom, love, sacrifice and redemption. I loved it so much. And, it has moment’s of genuine humour which are very welcome!

4

@vienibenmio Could have predicted that you would have been angry at the ending to Strangers Again, too ;) OK, OK. I'll stop, I'll stop.

FWIW, I forgave it for the MLs longing glances in the party scene just prior. Don't know why that was enough for me, but it was.

2

Can I just say, I adore how we all had our essays ready. Loving HeartBeat is a long-form art.

Nice to meet you. I have zero problems with this too, and I'm not a fantasy novel anything.

Now for my own polite disagreement. Many people dig on Taec's acting skills. I don't get it. I think he does great! I think he does well in close-ups using that face of his, and his physical comedy is superb. When he fell into "Hae-sun's" (weirdly) returned hug, he offers an expression of such pure relief and adoration on his face, I about lost it.

He's doing really well here! He also did fine in Save Me, if outshined by Seo Ye-ji and Woo Do-hwan, and I think that was the first thing I saw him in. And of course, Vincenzo was awesome for just letting everyone go crazy with their characters. But after laughing my way through the first episodes of The Game: Towards Zero and Blind (which are NOT comedies), I'm not usually too keen on him in serious roles, especially when he doesn't have a strong supporting cast to play off of. But both of those dramas were also bad, so I can't pin all the blame on him!

But when he gets a role that works, it works. This is easily the best I've liked him in anything!

I've never seen him in anything except 2PM videos and variety, so I had no expectations - but he's killing it with the comedy and was more than adequate with the emotions during that hug and when he was with Hae-won at the gallery, trying to see Hae-won in her.

And from my vantage point here in the shallow end, he looks great with the wavy hair down over his forehead - another possible live-watch crossover as well as showing how he's becoming more human and less vampire.

5

* trying to see Hae-sun

2

I've seen him in 4 projects; Vincenzo, Blind, Heartbeat, and Bring it on, Ghost (currently watching the latter together) and I think he's definitely an okay actor, like a 7 maybe. So far I think Heartbeat is his best followed by Vincenzo and I think part of it is it's obvious he's having fun in the roles and the guy is charming which comes through.

I remember during a BTS of Vincenzo, the lead actress blanked on her line because she got lost looking at his face/looking into his eyes haha

And I just remembered I saw another drama of his: The Secret Inspector & Joy but my choices remain the same.

4

@britney i feel the same way too! He was awesome as a villain in Vincenzo but his acting feels more natural here, like he’s more comfortable in the role compared to his earlier works. I can definitely see his progression over the years and I’m just a proud fan-girl! I hope Heartbeat will be his ticket to more roles that he would enjoy.

2

I liked him in BIOG but thought he was fantastic in Vincenzo.

No, I'm not anxious about all that ~other stuff~ yet either, because our characters are being so chill about it all! I'm just going to say it - I ADORE Taecyeon. I don't care if he's not Oscar-worthy, he's just so goofy, genuine, and sweet in how he approaches his characters, and that is making the age thing work (that, and the fact that the FL is intimidating to literally everyone).

Awww. This show!! I love it too much at this point. I don’t know how this show manages to keep the humor and at the same time have a very decent plot and emotional connect with characters. I really hope the show will break the trope of having to love the love of your past life. I don’t need the 2ML/2FL to be evil to make this happen. I want them to be nice yet not get the girl/vampire because the leads didn’t love them.

I am sure we are getting some angst next week. I am ready for some good angst. Man Hwi sure is wrecking things. And stakes are high with our vampire losing strength and life.

I love our leads. Our leads are already acting like family. Going to their home, starting a new life and business together and worrying about the other person. Their phone call that night was the most beautiful ‘sweet nothings’ yet so meaningful. This beats an episode 8 kiss.

And thank you as always for the recaps.

I agree so so much! I don’t like the renovation at all, it looks CHEAP. I vastly prefer the previous awesome gothic aesthetic. Maybe the show is providing commentary on it? There was that raw conversation between our leads when In-hae realised and apologised for not taking into consideration Woo-hyeol’s feelings about the whole guest house idea. How the change could take away the only remaining place where he feels comfortable. Everything about the world has suddenly changed for him. So this awful shocking transformation is in line with the how the vampires are being slowly erased / sidelined from existence

Who would have thought that this would become my favorite drama right now? I love it so much. I'm a bit worried about how they're going to have Woo-hyeol fall for In-hae instead of Hae-won in a believable manner. I'm a bit worried they're gonna say that it turns out In-hae is the actual reincarnation of Hae-sun and then his love will just transfer over to her.

I'm so bored with the SML and just like "ugh" every time he is onscreen. I fully admit that I usually feel this way about SMLs, though. I don't think In-hae loves him, I think she just appreciates what he does for her and thinks it's nice to be cared for. I also think it's a bit weird that he's sustained this level of feelings for her for this amount of time after... she put a band-aid on him. I know that's k-drama biz, but it's not exactly making me root for him either.

I like the way the drama is showing the role of environment in developing someone's personality. Even if Hae-won is Hae-sun, she was raised rich and that will make her act differently than she did in her past life.

"I'm a bit worried they're gonna say that it turns out In-hae is the actual reincarnation of Hae-sun and then his love will just transfer over to her."

This is what I am worried about as well, and it's the one thing that I DON'T want the drama to do. That's such a cop out and it would be so refreshing if the show was just like, "This reincarnated version of your love from 400 years ago is not the same person and your love for her is not the same." And also, there's a totally rad girl who you're hilariously trying to get to fall in love with someone else and maybe you should be seeing that you're actually making her start to fall in love with you instead.

But I also am not sure how they're going to explain In-hae's specialness without going down that route. Please, show. Stick to your guns with this one thing, I beg you! We have enough past life romance out there in the world! Be the exception!

His reflection in her eyes, the coffin, her blood etc etc makes me think there is a connection. I know its coming, but I still keep hoping it won't happen. In-Hae has been the voice of reason all along, so it would be such a bummer if she was indeed the reincarnated Hae-Sun.

Because after all the talk about eyes I kept noticing how much Won Ji-an’s sparkle, heh.

Maybe Hae-won has cataracts and that’s why he can’t see his reflection in her eyes.

6

I'd like to think that he can see his reflection in her eyes, because she's the one who can truly see him.

For myself, I don't care if she's reincarnated Hae-sun or not...I just want everyone to feel seen.

At least if it does go that route, the show will still have done something different than the typical reincarnating looking like the exact same person (I don't count 19th Life because in that universe no one reincarnates looking the same). It's a fresher take than we usually get!

4

Much as I would love to turn the reincarnation and first-love tropes on their head, I have zero faith in the show’s ability to avoid them and I’ve already built that into my expectations as part of the price of my enjoyment, so I won’t mind it so much later. The show is doing plenty to subvert clichés, especially as @mindy notes about In-hae (and other characters) regularly dropping truth-bombs - and thus avoiding contrived misunderstanding as a plot device.

9

Agreed! Maybe she's special because she's a descendent of Butler Joo? I can hope. But then the preview made it sound like they're questioning if she's actually related to him, so I am also afraid they may go down that route. I mentioned previously that it would be too coincidental if Woo-hyeol's first love reincarnated as the descendent of his beloved butler, so I think if it turns out she isn't related to Butler Joo, the writing will be on the wall.

4

Unlike the generous and compassionate @attiton I'm going to tell you, @mindy to tough it out. That's because I was a drill sergeant in the Joseon army in one of my past lives. I'm sure you remember--you were the benevolent monarch who saved me from execution for stealing a vat of kimchi. And now here we meet again!

9

Playing the role of the Dastardly Curmudgeon this evening will be @hacja, in replacement for Killjoy McMasterson, who has had a family emergency.

4

Can I just say, @mindy, that my comment about Dastardly McMasterson was caught up in moderation for about three hours.

Three horrible hours when I just knew I’d hit comedy gold, but also during which I knew that when the comment would eventually finally appear, it would totally seem like after-the-fact sour grapes.

I just need to say this to the person who took the glorious, completely appreciated, time to recognize that I’d even put forth this utterance.

Thank you.

6

@attiton: I wonder why, What could’ve triggered it? It was a great comment but even though I am culturally imperialised by the US, didn’t recognise the ‘McMasterson’ jibe. It was still finny though!

1

@dncingemma, if I had to guess, it got sent to moderation because of the word k.i.l.l. hidden in one of my silly names.

1

I must say, the past lives route in this show would not bother me in the slightest. The whole set up is that surface similarities from past lives are less important than understanding and affection in this life, so if they want to say the eternal "soul" of a connection--that is, having someone who loves you-- carries over centuries, I'm fine with it!

It would be awesome if she is not the reincarnated one, but even if she turns out to be, I am OK with it, because at the end it does establish that she is not the same person and she does not remember her past life, and by extension, him. What I am afraid of instead is the drama not explaining this connection at all after spending 3/4th of its time harping on it.

I think the show has done a pretty good job of showing how U-hyeol is already falling for In-hae despite being bowled over by Hae-wan's presence. I'd be happy if they just continue in that vein. He doesn't have to pretend to be anything when he's around In-hae, and their relationship is already so much more endearing than either of the second leads' relationships with them.

I think you're right about In-hae not having feelings for SML. She appreciates his kindness and it must feel novel having someone looking out for you since she's been pretty friendless. And it's exciting to be liked by someone you admire or respect, which can me easy to mistake as reciprocal feelings. Good for her for not making that mistake! It sounds like they were actually pretty good friends by the end of college though, if they were eating together all the time, so his crush didn't come out of nowhere.

Yes, I am living for those subtle moments! I have this (probably weird) love for romances where the male lead starts out in love with another woman but then falls for the female lead over time. That's why I'm REALLY hoping they don't go down the "In-hae was Hae-son all along" because that is like my favorite type of love story. Plus it would for me also make the romance feel less earned. I really want Woo-hyeol to have to choose and, in the end, to choose In-hae.

I don't understand why Sunbae only paid attention to Woo Hyul and not the guy trying to run him over. I get the initial shock, but afterwards I would want to know about the other guy.

These episodes are fun. Woo Hyul is slowly realizing first love isn't all it's cracked up to be and that he doesn't need a heart to be in love. In Hae is learning that asking for help is a fantastic way to live your life. Also it is so cute how they are getting to know each other.

Oh, what do I want to say this week about HeartBeat?

Squeee. That’s what.

It might all go to hell in the last four episodes, but with my In-hae at the helm—a woman who is always ready to ask politely to enter a room, draw admirably strong boundaries, or offer her capacious generosity to the ones dear to her—I still hold out great hope that we're going to...[deeeep breath deeeeeeeeep breath]...make it. [Did I do it? I think I did! I did it! I did it! I did it!! 🎉]

PS: Vampire Rose’s English intonation of, “Whut...maaan?” was utter life. I’ve listened to her say it like twenty times now. It’s not getting old 😉

PPS: Junho will forever be my favorite member of 2PM to watch eat, but Taec sure can out-funny him at the task!

PPPS: Another live-watch cross-over alert: “Woman dropping lone piece of stemware crisis” causing ML to act. Granted of them was resolved more, um, gracefully than the other…but which one do I mean?? 💃🥰

See, I think they've done a pretty good job at pacing so far and think 16 episodes will be a good amount! We've hardly even gotten into romance territory!

But frankly, I have the feeling that writers just don't know how to pace no matter how many drama episodes they get. 20, 16, 12, 8, it doesn't seem to actually matter. 12 episodes doesn't always mean better pacing... *cough* I'm looking at you, 19th Life.

Typing without typos? Total respect. In ancient times when I frequented forums to dissect shows, I used to be one of those who would go anal if there was a typo in my rants. Even grammar and structure mattered. I pestered the site owner to bring in the rich text editor until he obliged, complete with an edit button and customized emojis (being one of the first members and then being part of the Global moderator helped my case). Now? I am thrilled to be a part of another incredible community and know that most people can raed a word upseide down and insede out (you got that, didn't ya?) as long as it jogs their recall of familiar vocabulary. I am sure I have grown two extra thumbs and then some but hey! I am happy as long as I can get what's churning in my upper echelons out on time.

Well, now that Do-shik has been rejected and knows for sure something is up with U-hyeol, I fully expect the claws to come out. He doesn’t have to hold back for In-hae’s sake anymore, and I bet his family heritage is about to matter much more than it has so far. I loved him admitting to In-hae that he’s liked her since college, but she texted a different person at the end of the night!

I don’t trust Hae-won in the slightest. For a show about a bunch of vampires, she is giving off the creepiest vibe for sure. I even trust unscrupulous vampire Man-hwi more than her - at least with him you know what you’re getting.

Y’all I don’t love the house reno. I don’t need it to be hyper old-fashioned, but I wish they’d leaned into the art deco speakeasy vibe instead of plunking modern furniture into the gorgeous old mansion. I’m sure it needed some work (but if it only took a week it can’t have been that much work), but I wish they’d modernized the heating/electrical/plumbing and just restored the rest. Ah well.

Where do you think In-hae’s dad is? He can’t just be dead, right? Is he off running some vampire-butler errand that got out of hand? Does he have the gold? He was clearly aware of his role, since he refused to sell the house earlier, and he must have been expecting to come back since he didn’t leave any more comprehensive instructions for In-hae. I’d love to know what everyone’s theories are.

The modern furniture dropped in the house made me cringe, lol.

Speaking of the house, I'm totally stumped by how much the neighbors (and developers) want it torn down. I feel like it should be a historic landmark! I know newer buildings are easier to maintain and abide by certain codes, but gorgeous old buildings like that never go out of style if they're well taken care of. Can't it get some sort of special designation but still let the rest of the neighborhood be redeveloped? Clearly I know nothing about real estate or zoning or anything, LOL.

9

Required fields are marked *

I dont get the neighbours either, they seem kinda passive-aggressive for no reason.. for a mansion that was supposedly abandoned, i thought the exterior was quite well kept and the street outside it very clean. They can’t possibly let One house be in the way of redevelopment, there must be other reasons as well right? I find myself thinking too hard so i just chalk it up to being a drama..

3

Required fields are marked *

It's funny you mention Hae-won's creepy vibes because the minute she appeared on screen I thought she looked way more like a vampire than any of the actual vampire characters, LOL. She didn't give those vibes at all as Hae-sun, but her styling is SO vampiric for Hae-won. The pale skin, the long, dark hair, the high cheekbones.

As for her dad, I have no idea! He's the only one left to have taken the gold, so I assume he did, but I haven't the faintest idea where he is now. I'm curious to see what the drama might reveal to us next week.

Hmm, interesting. If that's the case, it wasn't a great plan though was it? Because his property would just pass to In-hae, and without making sure it would go to someone who would sell it, the people who are desperate for the redevelopment would just be back where they started.

1
2

Required fields are marked *

Lol, I did not think of that. I dunno, I just feel like there's something to the fact that they wanted to redevelop the land and he wouldn't sell it (especially within the context of the second leads and Woo-hyeol's vampire enemy who don't always seem 100% legit). Something's up.

You could be right. We've seen the SML hire people who are fine with kicking people out of their living spaces and throwing their possessions out the window to get them to leave. Maybe it’s a little judgy to not trust someone with such bad taste, but can we really believe someone who can’t colour coordinate and appreciate antique furniture? And yes I fully blame the renovation on Do-sik, since this seems like his job unlike In-hae who trained to be a school nurse. I don’t mean for my comment to sound so aggressive, but I’m just miffed about the reno…
