Heartbeat: Episodes 5-6
by solstices
Our delightful duo find themselves in a bit of a predicament this week, with unemployment woes posing a threat to their homeownership. The crisis may cause quite the headache, but it also brings about much-needed change, along with a side of caring, compassion, and cuteness.
EPISODES 5-6
We pick up where we left off last week, with Woo-hyul calling In-hae by Hae-sun’s name. Weirded out by his sudden approach, In-hae panics and whips out her pepper spray. HAHAHA, poor Woo-hyul. After weeping all the capsaicin out, Woo-hyul recounts his past to In-hae, explaining how he felt Hae-sun in her blood. Needless to say, In-hae finds that last part incredulous. Reincarnation? Past lives? She doesn’t believe in any of that.
Still, Woo-hyul must get In-hae falling in love. Thus begins Woo-hyul’s courtship ritual, which entails leaving anonymous flower bouquets on In-hae’s doorstep. Unfortunately for him, In-hae finds the gesture more creepy than cute, and she very nearly files a police report. Oops. Woo-hyul’s next plan is watching a romantic movie together (at 2PM, of course), which ends up becoming nap time for In-hae. Double oops?
Operation Romance soon reaches an abrupt pause when the nasty power-tripping principal informs In-hae that the school won’t be renewing their contract with her. Downtrodden and dazed, In-hae ends up wandering back to Do-shik’s wine bar, where she drowns her sorrows.
Coincidentally, Do-shik happens to pass by, and he instantly clocks how she’s overfilling her wine glass. Wanting to offer her a little comfort, he quickly writes out coupons and creates a sure-win lucky draw event on the spot. When In-hae hears from the staff that her meal is on the house, she smiles giddily, pleased by her luck. Aww, that’s adorably sweet of Do-shik.
Recognizing that In-hae needs time to herself, Do-shik doesn’t approach her. Instead, he follows her home from afar to make sure she’s safe, only going to help when she trips over herself. She brushes off her unfair dismissal, but Do-shik astutely points out that she’s always quick to claim that she’s okay, even when she’s not.
Back in the mansion, In-hae cracks open a can of beer for round two, and she ends up drunkenly confiding in Woo-hyul. Losing her job — the one thing that gave her stability after her father’s disappearance and her mother’s death — is hitting her a lot harder than she’d thought.
Realizing that In-hae is much lonelier than she lets on, Woo-hyul reaches out to gently stroke her hair, reassuring her that she’s done well fending for herself. The contact makes In-hae sober up, seemingly flustered, and she excuses herself to bed.
The next morning, In-hae comes down with a high fever, which leads to Nurse Woo-hyul time. Pulling up a dusty old tome, Woo-hyul’s about to start brewing a traditional tonic in their backyard when Do-shik shows up with cold medicine from the pharmacy. (Woo-hyul fibs to In-hae that he made it himself, ha.)
Woo-hyul is a man of many talents, which means we also get Revenge Mode Woo-hyul. When he overhears the school principal bragging about how he kicked In-hae out to make way for his friend, he unceremoniously dumps a bucket of water on the awful man right as he’s taking a dump. The tale sends In-hae into a fit of giggles, but it does also mean they’re both jobless now.
After a string of failed interviews, In-hae’s running out of options when Do-shik suggests converting her mansion into a guesthouse. However, Woo-hyul isn’t enthused, until In-hae points out that turning the mansion into a popular spot may increase the chances of Hae-sun showing up. With that, Woo-hyul is convinced, and In-hae says yes to the business proposal. Aww, it makes Do-shik so happy that he can barely contain his grin.
Do-shik’s enthusiastic generosity gives Woo-hyul the realization that Do-shik’s carrying a torch for In-hae — which means he just needs to play wingman for them. Yessss, matchmaker Woo-hyul! When Do-shik visits for a house tour, Woo-hyul takes the chance to ask him for his thoughts on In-hae. Do-shik admits that their cohabitation bothers him, since In-hae is “a woman he wishes to protect,” and Woo-hyul looks simultaneously satisfied yet miffed by the answer. Hee, do I smell a whiff of jealousy?
Meanwhile, Hae-won has her sights on the mansion, musing that something about it keeps drawing her in. Since In-hae isn’t selling the property, Hae-won offers to invest in the guesthouse. That leads to Hae-won paying the mansion a visit, right as In-hae and Woo-hyul return home from a neighborhood night patrol. Woo-hyul instantly recognizes Hae-won/Hae-sun, and he stops short in his tracks, utterly stricken. Then he’s rushing forward, centuries of longing surging forth as he envelops her in a hug.
Oh no, that’s going to be difficult to explain, and even harder to work through. Woo-hyul has carried his love and his grief for so long, centering all his decisions around Hae-sun. With their relationship forming such a significant part of his identity, it won’t be easy for him to separate his memory of Hae-sun from the present Hae-won.
For now, Hae-won remains an enigma, but her fascination with the mansion seems to hint at a connection to the past. Does it feel familiar to her because she was Hae-sun, or did she play some other role in Woo-hyul’s history? Either way, I’m inclined to be wary of her in the present, given that she’s supposedly business partners with the impudent vampire Man-hwi.
Also, two weeks ago I thought I was safe from second lead syndrome, but I think I’m about to eat my words. Do-shik is so respectful and considerate, and it’s so heartwarming to see him always putting In-hae first and respecting her boundaries. “I want you to be happier than anyone else, because you deserve it” — if that is everything to him, how can I not swoon?
If this were any other drama, Do-shik would be a perfect male lead, but unfortunately the competition of a suave yet bumbling vampire is a little too stiff here. Do-shik may be the umbrella that shields In-hae from the rain, but Woo-hyul is like the warm chicken soup she didn’t even realize she needed. As much as In-hae and Woo-hyul may bicker and butt heads, their actions clearly show that they care for each other. Proximity makes the heart grow fonder, right?

I love the slowburn. The scene where In-hae got home drunk and opened up to Woo-hyeol about the hardships she faced and him comforting her was chef kiss. The hilarious scene are still there but those two are getting closer.
Now that Hae-won got in the game, I wonder how it would affect our OTP. Please don't make her into a 1D evil SFL show.

2FL is aligned with the bad vampire Man-hwi, I wonder if he became rich with Woo-haul’s missing gold. He did look concerned when he heard Woo Hyul was back. But she didn’t seem to recognize WH so maybe it’s not a totally evil alliance?

I just got on the Heartbeat train and that scene when she got home drunk pushed me into obsessed-with-this-show territory. It confirmed that the drama could handle both campy and heartfelt moments. In-hae's pain came through and Woo-hyeol had the perfect response and said what she needed to hear. So full of understanding even though he doesn't quite understand the context of the social and economic pressures that In-hae is suffering.

I am surprised by how much I am growing to like this show. I Started just to see what the hype was about, and by ep 4 I was sold. Ep 5-6 turned out to be solid in terms of plot progression. I am a little scared that we are moving fast with the plot, but also excited about the possibilities.
I am going to have a serious case of 2ML syndrome if he continues to be this charming. His happy smitten smile is contagious. He looks so happy! I hope he doesn’t turn dark and this whole mansion thing is not some scheme.
The vampire Ttekboki was hilarious. I felt their pain. They had a USP right under their nose and lost it.. lol.
And that pepper spray was hilarious… mosquito vampire indeed..
I loved the moments between the leads too. Slowly these two are forming a bond. And for the first time In-hae sees that there can be someone to take her side too, be it pouring water on the principal, waiting for you to return home or just telling you that you did well.
These moments of comfort is what is drawing her to him and I love the show for making these simple moments so impactful.

Thanks for your weecap, @solstices! If there’s an episode of this drama available, it’s always at the top of my list. I’m not even sick in bed anymore and I’ve seen all of the episodes twice.
One revelation from this week: Our lead vampire may look wonderful in suits, but if you ask me, our only female vampire, Rose, can dress him up in her take on “effortless chic,” any damn time and I’ll look on happily.
I also remain in rapt adoration of our FL. I love her style as well, and also the way I never quite know what she’s going to say or how she’s going to react to any given situation. “Whoever” she ends up with, I hope they are good enough for her. I’ve got my eye on all possible candidates, and am assessing their worthiness carefully. She deserves to have her loneliness recognized and soothed, and I’ll stare at the screen ESPECIALLY STERNLY if anyone hurts her. 🤨

Not sure if his visuals are being truly made fun of in the show, since I doubt ears like his are considered unattractive or funny in SK. I believe this is a "good omen" feature over there, likely rooted in Buddhism that prized HUGE ears as Buddha's trademark look, can't recall the actual meaning... something about having virtuous character or kind heart, not sure. I also read before that it's a very sexy thing in Japan, so make of that what you will)))

My favorite bits this week were the little moments when our leads grew to understand each other better. When U-hyeol comforted In-hae after she came home drunk, and when In-hae apologized to U-hyeol for not thinking about his attachment to the house before she got carried away. I also loved the takedown of the reincarnated lover trope - this feels like the most realistic reaction to this ever. And now we get to guess what the show is going to do! Which woman (if any) is Hae-sun reincarnated, and will it matter for U-hyeol in the end?
This week I was mostly confused by our SML and his driver/secretary person. They seemed extremely shady right out of the gate to me, but this week were almost entirely endearing. That somehow just makes me more suspicious of him/them in the long run, but maybe the drama will surprise me and they won’t end up the vampire-hunting duo they have the potential to be.

Yeah…like why is the secretary so clearly against Do-shik’s distraction with In-hae? Sometimes it’s like he might think it’s “cute,” but usually his face says that he thinks it’s something that shouldn’t be happening.
And the cross-over chatter between live-watches is growing: there are now three “hotels” (ok, one’s a guesthouse, but still)…two different takes on how reincarnation should manifest itself in the present…two that emphasize the way that South Korean workers are treated without regard for their humanity…we already had the common emphasis suits, but now also on fashionable tracksuits…and, even, a distracting cat 🙃
I bet you there must be even more!!

So far the neighbors are putting on a pretty tame show to make our leads want to leave. I kind of forget what they're after too - do they want the house completely gone, or just spruced up a bit? Cause if it's the latter they should just hang tight a sec.

I feel like the neighbors wanted the house to be sold off to a developer who will rebuild that area into something fancy so their own property value will rise, which they can then sell off for a fortune.
It's funny that if they wait a little bit, our OTP can turn the house into a hotspot destination, which could also turn the entire area popular and bring more business.

I’ve been trying to figure out if there’s some pattern to when Woo-hyul’s ears are backlit to flame red, or if the production team is just trolling Taec/amusing themselves. They are adorable. It is also very sweet of her to just go all into the idea that tehy are in this together. She didn't have to ask him about making the mansion a guest house but she did. I am really loving this drama. Especially how it's taking down the reincarnated love trope and pointing out that, even though they're reincarnated, they're not really the same person. Extra points that it seems the FL won't just be a reincarnation of his first love through and through. I'd like it even better if she isn't a reincarnation at ALL, but I'm doubtful that will be the case. I'm also just adoring the sweet development between the leads, how the emotional bond between them is growing in a subtle manner. I think the FL is very interesting and well developed, and like how the ML has to genuinely find a connection with her beyond just doing superficial displays.
The 2ML is kind of giving me off vibes and I'm not sure why... he seems TOO perfect?
Btw, does anyone know how nurses are trained or educated in Korea? I'm wondering why In-hae can't apply for a non-school nurse job, like a hospital or a clinic. Is it a different type of degree?

I wondered if she may have only achieved whatever is the lowest degree required for a school nurse. Since she had been living on her own and trying not to get evicted, she may not have had the money to pursue more advanced degrees or licenses.
Even if she is the reincarnation, just by having her be a different face while someone else has the past first love's face is refreshing!

While I do think duplicitous motives will emerge both from Doo-shik and Hae-won--they are just a bit too sweet for me to do any swooning right at the moment--it would be very satisfying to me as a lover of totally happy rom-com endings if they did turn out to be decent people and would fall for each other. There is no indication of any love lost between them however, since they know each other already and Doo-shik has shown a little irritation at having to pick her up at the airport.
The vampires vs. vampire vs. vampire hunter subplot is definitely going to kick in soon, however, and I wonder if Hae-won is going to reverse sides in this one. Regardless, as I've said several times about this show I hope it doesn't overwhelm the rom-com!
While I appreciate @attiton hotel parallels with the other shows (when you put these shows with Secret Romantic Guesthouse and One Day Off, maybe the Korean authorities put the word out to stress tourist opportunities this year?), I'm thinking, with @elinor, that the theme of this one will be anti-development, with vampires representing a beloved tradition that should not be discarded by modernity.

I'm waiting for your detailed explication of this show's points of correspondence to or departure from its obvious source material, with the village inn setting, Woo-hyul as a stand-in for K. My only complaint--because I’ve given up resisting Taecyeon’s charms and now love this show—is that the sidekicks aren’t likeable or interesting. They don’t have to be both, just be likeable or just be interesting! I like these two actors, especially Yoon Byunghee whom I’m enjoying watching in his small part in Delightfully Deceitful, but I’m ff their scenes and that makes me sad.

I am not annoyed by the sidekicks, but I am constantly irritated hy that ox blood lady and her husband. They bring nothing to the plot.

I am pretty near certain Cat-man is a low key god of some sort, that would be the only way for it to make sense that he knows so much.
I also don’t trust hae won. There is just something slightly off about her. But we will just have to wait and see how her character pans out.
Into have 2ML syndrome. He just seems like he would be excellent relationship material

I also have a bit of 2ML syndrome. Want to clone In-hae so Woo-hyul and Do-shik can both be paired with her. His lucky draw method to cheer In-hae up, even though momentarily, melted my heart.
There is definitely something off about Hae-won since she's hanging out with the Young Mean Vampire. It doesn't look like he's scamming her nor does it seem like she's playing sugar mama, so they must be friends of sorts. Even if he wasn't a vampire, hanging out with someone like that would feel off too.

@solstices - thank you for the delightful recap, complete with 2PM and Park Kang-Hyun's musical references!
LOL with the writing having Woo-hyul avoid saying 2pm by saying 1400.
I feel like being a korean vampire must be really tough. Garlic is like an important component of all korean food. Dong-seob must have a hard time making tteokbeokki.
I want to give a hug to Woo-gyul's bumbling friends. It must really hurt to be living hand to mouth after living for so long. They should all be living comfortably like the other supernatural, immortal-esque guys in kdramaland.

I feel sorry for the poor sidekicks, but I like that the show has turned the rich-and-immortal fantasy on its head - thinking of You From Another Star's alien investing in Seoul real estate before Seoul existed, or Goblin accumulating centuries of wealth with the help of generations of loyal, conveniently mortal retainers. It makes it too easy. Even Zombie Detective found a safe full of some dead guy's money if I remember correctly. How dim must these guys be if they haven't figured out at least a modest sure moneymaker after hundreds of years of observing human behavior and greed and fashion and market cycles?

You're right about the show turning the rich and immortal fantasy on its head! I think it also helps ground the show in the current reality where increased COL, inflation, stagnant wages, and decreasing employment opportunities have made it very difficult to live what is considered average life goals - having a steady career rather than a job, homeownership, marriage, kids, etc.
I feel like it's sad that they haven't created a little nest egg, because it's now harder than ever to come up with one.
They were right about gold holding its value, but for some reason they put all their eggs into one basket....

I completely forget he's an idol as I less than follow k-pop. I just thought it a bit odd when he said 14:00. Was military time all the rage in the 1920s? Oof. You all must be having so much fun with all the references.

I watched Junho in JBL and TRS before I knew there was an online community about kdramas. So he was always Actor to me (yes, with a capital A). But now in my beanie phase I am better educated tho it slips my mind all the time. I wish Taec lots of success in his acting career. Perhaps I'm wrong but it seems actors have a longer shelf life than idols.

I think so too, though typically successful singers have infinite shelf life, but somehow S.Korea has managed to limit its talented singers into this Idol box who need to look perpetual 20s, an impossible standard hard to break away from. Some of them are classical singers and yet not taken seriously. I was shocked to learn some of these singers are as young as 14, gyrating to music like 18+ adults.

They definitely do! Lots of idols transition take up acting and transition into it in recognition that their idol shelf life is short, especially if they don't have aspirations or the amount of talent to have a solo singing career. There are lots of successful actors who started off as idols, though not all of them come from successful idol groups, i.e. Park Hyung-shik, Im Shi-wan, Seo Hyun-jin, Jung Ryeo Won, Hwang Jung-eum, etc.

@asianromanceromantic Park Hyung Sik....his playlist is forever in my music loop. Bud is my all time favorite OST. Having said that, I was truly surprised to find he was a singer first. And even more astonished to find how lightly many of them are taken as actors. I was truly surprised to see PHS did not even have a nomination for Best actor for Happiness which is a travesty. It seems that that they are in a constant battle to fight a stereotype. As I dropped Vincenzo earlier, I missed seeing Taec's work in that and have not watched anything else. I get it that he might nt be the best, but then so many non Idols are pedestrian actors as well. I wonder why they are judged more harshly.

@Minnie_thelady8home the 2023 award year for 2022 was pretty competitive. I think he's been getting good recognition. Right before his military service, he won a Baeksang (which is really prestigious) for Best New Actor for the film, Juror 8. I think actors are judged more harshly when they start off in leading roles or when the popularity of their groups or the popularity of their image lead people to feel like they're being pushed or that they're coasting on that popularity. I think people in korea already think of Park Hyung-shik mainly as an actor. ZE:A was not popular at all and the idol group only gained a bit of recognition AFTER Kwanghee, Hyung-shik, and Im Shi-wan became popular for variety and acting. The only song of theirs that was popular was Aftermath, which went viral years after they've practically disbanded.

Ah! That is very interesting. I didn't know that. Seeing his current Viki rating as No 1 Idol turned actor I automatically assumed he must have been popular as an Idol too. About 2022 being competitive, Jun Ho deserved it for Red Sleeve, but PHS definitely deserved at least a nomination. Some of these Idols are such phenomenal actors and I am glad they made the transitions, better for us. IU is brilliant, Jun Ho has terrific screen presence, Taec is fun to watch.

This show is getting better every week and so far it's been really delightful to watch.
I find it so entertaining and maybe it helps that I went in with no expectations.
Episode 5 gave off very strong Goblin vibes, there are quite a few similarities and even the background music in some points sounded really familiar.
The two leads are doing a fantastic job and hats of to Taecyeon for really getting the tone right when making fun of himself.

I'm really loving this show, it's such a pick me up. Lately Kdramas haven't been kradmaing how Kdramas usually Kdrama. (if you get my drift lol.) Tae is excelling in his role and so is the FL. The slow burn is giving me butterflies.
On to the 2ml (Definitely no 2nd lead syndrome for me) He's way to perfect, there is an aura of deceit looming around him. I can't trust him at all. He ha a nice smile though. 2Fl, I'm rooting for her to not turn out to be another antagonist. I hope she's being genuine... But I also feel like there'll be a huge plot twist. *dun dun dun* Lol

I don’t know if it’s the production values, the script, the acting, or what, but it’s also giving me old school vibes. Perhaps because at its core, the show has heart. As of now, it’s working. Very well.

@solstices Thank you for the recaps.
I stayed with the show for Taec's humour, but somehow the drama won me over with its plot. First the concept of guest house and next week we have treasure hunt. I also like our realistic and smart FL whose responses are funny and touching at times. Interested to see how the SFL's character will be developed.

I seriously believe that this episodes cemented the fact that its game over for Do Shik. In Hae is already falling for our bumbling and oblivious vampire. That one scene when Woo Hyul was comforting a drunk In Hae after she spilled her struggles was the biggest turning point in our housemates relationship. Woo Hyul was extremely on pointe with his comment that highlighted his sensitivity and astuteness on what In Hae needes to hear at that moment. Swoon!
Woo Hyul may not be there yet since he is still pining for Hae Sun. The appearance of Hae Won will only make him more confused but his heart clearly shows that he already cares for In Hae.
In Hae acts differently when she is with either Woo Hyul and Do Shik. She is more comfortable with Do Shik but I think Woo Hyul reads that wrong. The fact that In Hae is more prickly with Woo Hyul is because she feels something for him that she does not want to show. While with Do Shik, its more a polite friendliness that she puts on out of habit.
Both are good contenders but my rule for love triangles is whomever the FL gives her heart to got my vote. Well, Woo Hyul is adorable already and he gets my vote even before I knew that the FL likes him sooo he wins for me.

This drama has my heart. It checks all the boxes that I love in a drama that I watch because I am tired after a day's work and want to watch something that makes me laugh as well as makes me go awwwww......
I also love the way the romance is shaping up. They are getting to know each other. She is protective of him without realizing it, he cares for her without being intrusive (I just want to check on you, don't spray...hahahahaha!).

A good lead pair, their comic timing and their chemistry makes all the difference. Something the cult classics like WWWSK or BP or SWDBS got right. It definitely makes us overlook the plot holes that sometimes as large as the black holes.

Heartbeat is fast becoming my all-time favourite kdrama and we're only 6 episodes in - perfect blend of comedy, drama, romance and fantasy. I was originally going to give it a miss until I realised Won Ji-An was playing the lead role, a revelation in the first D.P. series. Seems to have mastered comedy, too. Will be in Season 2 of Squid Game so looking forward to her role in that upcoming series. Only 23 years old, so likely the future of Korean Film and Television. Kudos for recapping - gives me another laugh for the week. 👏
