Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 3-9, 2023

King the Land kings the ratings this week, hitting 12.3% for its eighth episode, and seems to be firmly placed in double digits. Meanwhile, See You in My 19th Life continues to hover between 4-5% (I’m surprised this hasn’t seen more of a climb), while Revenant keeps its 9-10% placeholder.

The weekday slots pale in comparison — as is becoming our sad norm — with most dramas (cable to not) fighting to claim even 4%.

I was thinking Heartbeat would be higher.

King the land: not much plot but I like the way it is truthful about workplace harrassment, sexism, lookism, it piles up every criticism and bulldoses every excuse for inequality, attempts to gossip, and it has the characters demand transparent motifs and truthfulness.

It'd be nice to see "Heartbeat" hit around 5% or 6% because it's a well done, entertaining show.

I continue to think "19th's" ratings are solid if unremarkable, and better than a lot of romcoms or romantic dramas received this year. 8% would have been a huge triumph, but 4-5% is still nothing to be ashamed of, especially because it's in direct competition with a show that's taking up a large portion of the audience.

At this point, "King the Land" has become a reliably escapist weekend drama and I understand why it's getting these numbers. They're likely going to cement Junho's status as an elite leading man, and that's certainly justified. At the same time, I hope execs understand that it's not just the leads' charms that make this watchable for so many people--it's the story itself. Yes, it's thin, tropey, predictable, and sometimes problematic, but it's also unabashedly romantic and swoony, with just the right balance of couples, social commentary, and friendships/coworker bonding (namely, Go Won and his secretary). Is "King the Land" a masterpiece? No. But it does what it does well, and we need more romcoms like that in dramaland.

See You in My 19th Life has a considerable note of tragedy and melancholy. It's a beautiful drama that I like very much, but there are more sad than happy moments in it.
I like Durian's Affair, but let's hope the ratings don't jump too high, because I don't want the screenwriter to write season 2, as it was with her previous drama. Let this story end in 16 episodes.
Heartbeat is a colorful, heartwarming drama with a main couple who are both adorable. Some moments are so funny that I can't remember the last time I watched something so well written.

Heartbeat is definitely the best balance of romance and story for me right now.

KING THE LAND deserves the love.

SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE deserves more love.

THE REAL HAS COME is actually struggling a bit for a weekender. Part of the problem may be that there are simply too many couples and so most are not getting enough screen time.

Is it possible that the problem with TRHC is that its story foundation is not family but deception?

I haven't been as hook on the Real has Come as with earlier episodes. There are lot of couples and half of them aren't that likable. Two of the couples are already married so there is less of that push-pull feel you get from when a couple initially meets and falls in love. I'm rooting for the main couple and the maknae one. I'm also rooting for the mom and principal, but they're giving so much screentime to Sejin's mom and made her less batshit crazy in the last few weeks, that it's possible that they would reconcile. I'm also rooting for the coworker and pharmacist to meet up and get together instead of them pining over the coparenting couple.

The things you are describing are I think an effect of what I was talking about with too many couples. And some of them are not that likeable. About the only useful thing that Se-jin's mom has done recently was tipping of our 2 ML that Se-jin was about to pull another stunt- and that just does not justify wasting screentime on her.

Loving King the Land. Glad to see other drama fans share my enthusiasm for a good ole romcom. There are so few that are well done these days.

Heartbeat is fantastic! The ratings continue to slowly climb as more viewers are finding this hilarious little drama.

I agree with the above reviewer about SYIM 19th Life....too many sad moments and not enough upbeat ones. Viewers can only stand so much sadness these days. While I can appreciate that it's a well-written and acted drama, it's just too much of a downer for me. I finally gave up after the 6th episode.

It's especially sad to me because the 19th Life webcomic is much more lighthearted and even funny.

I also watch SYIM 19th Life, but I am not eagerly awaiting the new episodes. It depresses me to think that FL may also live to see the next rebirth and know what she lost when she died. If I knew this wasn't going to happen and the "curse" was going to be broken, I might be better able to engage with the drama.

Of all the shows I’m watching, Revenant is easily the smartest kid on the block.* I know the numbers are good, but I think they should be even better. Is it the genre limiting the audience?

*Lots of love for Heartbeat as well. Hope the audience give it more love as well.

I generally don’t like the horror genre so is “Revenant” scaryish or plain scary?

It's more of an occult thriller than true horror - there are ghosts murdering and possessing people, but actual gore/jumpscares/demonic makeup are very limited. Mostly just moving shadows, misplaced objects in mirrors reflections, creepy smiles, voices in people's heads etc. Barely scarier than your usual cop show, I'd say. There are verbal discussions of some VERY nasty things tho, namely LOTS of suicides, child abuse and human sacrifices.

I'm a wuss. So I only watch it when someone is at home. However, I agree with @gikata that it's really an occult thriller. True horror fans will scoff. It does cover hard subject matters as mentioned so I guess that's why many folks are skipping.

That said, it does not exploit them, and balances it with a knockout emotional performance by Kim Tae-Ri. The show has heart.

@indyfan: I’m a wuss too. I have enough nightmares about Real World events so occult-focused shows are hard going for me. Thanks a lot though for letting me know about your take.

You're welcome)))

@indyfan, well, I'm not afraid of either gore or horror stuff but some of show's topics do make me uncomfortable, esp since it's apparently based on real, ahem, practices... not enough to stop watching tho))) Agree that drama does a good job at keeping things tasteful. We might have a future directing (let alone acting) award contestant here.

Heartbeat deserves more love. Its understandable though since weekday dramas usually have low ratings compared to weekendera.

I absoluely agree. It's shame that Heartbeat is weekdays. Many of the gems do get lost because they are on weekdays.

I hoped REVENANT will climb even higher but looks like this genre can only go so far, especially against all Saturday competition. 19th LIFE seems to do certain things wrong (darkening and complicating the original plot) seeing that it clearly lost to its main "hotel romance" rival. Shame. tvN truly lost their touch lately, esp with romance shows.

If you haven't seen Heartbeat Episode 5 yet, it might surprise you with its romantic beats. Surprisingly sweet. Also, the screech was turned down a notch. Keeping fingers crossed for Episode 6.

I am looking forward to watching Heartbeat (on my Wed menu). I am loving it, though definietly glad the screech factor is down. Now if they can only do away with her obsession with money...
