Lies Hidden in My Garden ends its run on a high note of 3.0% (not bad for ENA these days) and clears the slot for Not Others next week. Meanwhile, Heartbeat continues to suffer in the Monday-Tuesday slot, while Durian’s Affair starts to kick it up a notch as it reaches its midpoint. And so does King the Land, now happily situated with Revenant in the double digits.

I'm totally in love with "Heartbeat".
Durrian's Affair is a rather slow drama, but it seems to have a loyal following (including me, but I'm not in South Korea) and it's going up. But I don't want more than 16 episodes of this drama.

I haven’t watched it, but I’m surprised Durian is not doing even better considering the writer’s previous dramas. Is it not makjang enough? Lol.

Happiness Battle should reach 3.0% in its finale next week, so good for ENA for finally seeing some success.

It makes me sad. What are we seeing that Koreans aren’t? It won’t be cut short or anything, will it?

Most dramas these days are pre-produced, so that’s very unlikely. Even if it wasn’t, dramas don’t get cut these days (with very, very rare exceptions) even if they’re pulling in 1%.

That's good to hear.

@minniegupta1 @mayhemf Maybe it'll become a cult classic. Sigh. (Tho 🤞🏽 I sometimes feel like I'm jinxing it by praising it this early in its run.)

I hope so too. I know it's early, still it's miles ahead of the monsterity that KTL is.

How many times have we seen the grandmother trope with almost exactly the same dialouges? It was not even funny how dreary the entire episode was.

5

@indyfan You stole my words. How in the world did Heartbeat drop?

I would die of frustration if KTL rose next Friday after doing a terrible dive in terms of content this week. I am shocked Yoon A is this popular though, good for her.

I am almost sympathising with the sister - if this was real life, King the Land would go bankrupt in months.

I don’t get it either. I assume Taec is quite popular in SK and the past live arc is something that works well with the Korean audience, so I am baffled.
Is it because of the Mon/Tue slot that people are not finding time to tune in? Would it have done better if it was Friday or weekend aired? I don’t know.
It has everything going for it. Good leads, great humor, intriguing plot etc. sigh.

Mon/Tues has definitely something to do with it. I doubt if KTL was slotted Mon/Tues it would have reached anywhere close to what it did. Someone told me it was YoonA/JunHo combo that secured the weekend slot for this drama. Heartbeat's FL is new so that's star power cut in half, and weekday slot did the rest. I can only assume but it's breaking my heart for Taec and team.

I hear you. I go back and forth (Buffy, yes! Twilight, no!). And I almost dropped this after the first episode. Some major cringe. But I'm so glad I continued. In case you missed the other commentators, Heartbeat, so far, is the funniest, sweetest, tropiest romcom of the season.

The show knows it’s cringe and embraces its cringe. That’s part of what makes it so fun.

But, I should add, it still knows how to hit the sweet, sentimental beats perfectly!

0

@mindy I was referring to the first life battle scene CGI. Tho I acknowledge not everyone thinks so. Everything else has been super fun for me.

0

Agreed!!! I just binge watched the first 6 episodes I am loving it so much. Taecyeon is charming and funny, and I like the female lead and her character...whereas I dropped KTL at episode 4. As much as I love Lee Jun-ho (he was so good in Rain or Shine and Wok of Love!), I find the drama to be mostly gloss with very little substance. I know a lot of people will disagree but I personally thought there was very little chemistry between the leads. (I did like her friends though.)

THE REAL HAS COME has seen it ratings rise slightly- and I am at a loss to explain why, given the bizarre time slip.

Why isn't SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE doing better?

At least KING THE LAND is doing well.

HEARTBEAT is a good show suffering in a tough time slot.

I've read somewhere that KTR promised us "mindblowing" ending, so unless it's a total trash kind of mind blow that could be sensed by viewers from miles above, finale is expected to rise in numbers. The only question is how much.

I didn't personally either, it was someone else citing her interview in the comment section on MDL, so take it with a grain of salt. But I wouldn't be surprised, this writer loves her ending twists. It's just that I did NOT like how she did it in her previous show I've watched... But hope dies last.

LOL! That is a good way to put it.

I actually dropped the Sunday episode. I am embarrased to say I will probably go back to watch in the hopes Junho does something, anything at this point, to deserve the title of Head Manager. Else as far as the Hotel goes, I am joining team sister. Manager Gu can go live with Sa rang in his haunted London mansion. She will have enough to do just to run the place anyway.

100%. They covered so many sights and images in high speed. There was even a PPL within PPL with Moon bar probably paying for their bar/restaurant plug. I laughed so hard when they both randomly changed to formal gowns and suits as they went to the rooftop.

Knowing nothing whatsoever about the Korean T.V. audience I can therefore assert authoritatively that

1. Kim Tae-ri is a wonderful actress, and Revenant's ratings are direct tribute to her. In fact watching that show always makes me lament the casting decision not to have her play the adult version of herself in 25-21. It sure would have made the ending of that show work better!

2. The success of King the Land shows the pent up demand for loving kisses instead of sobbing hugs to indicate a romantic relationship.

3. Heartbeat's ratings will rise when the love quadrangle is clearly established, so that viewers can measure its area by calculating the length of its sides and the angle at which they interact.

It's funny...I see this "love polygon" (a term I learned in WWAW this week) as an abstract plot reality, but when I watch the show, I don't feel it at all. The relationship conclusions all feel so foregone to me, that I take these heartfelt crushes to be more like dalliances.

I'm more worried about another thing, which I can't even bring myself to type. But I can bring myself to type enough words make everyone else curious 😈

I haven’t watched the newest HEARTBEAT episodes yet, and while I understand people saying KTL is an ode to old school rom coms, I would actually say it’s HEARTBEAT with its ‘love square’. And is exactly as you’ve described @attiton! Bringing back memories of the 2000s classics. FULL HOUSE, DELIGHTFUL GIRL, MY GIRL and a gazillion or so Melos (of which I erased from my brain, so much fauxcest…so much)

Yes, I think you're right on with that comparison! @reply1988 - I know you've said vampires are absolutely NOT for you, but I think there's a lot in HeartBeat that you'd love!! Our main vamp is a romantic who's in love with love and otherwise kind and gentle, the vampire sidekicks are on the bumbling side, and the only jump-scare is neighbors suddenly appearing with flashlights. The only "scary" (and it's really not!!) vampire stuff happens in the past (so far), and it's easily skipped (or screen-covered)! It's far far FAR less tense than Healer, for reference 😊

6

@hopefulromantic…Is @reply1988 not watching HeartBeat???? I mean, maybe she should wait until it’s over, but OMG…I think she would love it.

Let’s wait until it’s over and then recommend…

1

@attiton You know what I'm worried about with this show. I guess I'll content myself to remaining curious about what you are worried about.

What I know I will be irritated at is what I'm always irritated at in these classic rom-coms, and that is noble idiocy. (Sounds stupid to say about a vampire show, but its going to happen!) I have sort of resigned myself to that element, though, so as long as we don't have any stark melodramatic turns, I'll just put up with it.

2

That’s not what I’m worried about.

0

@attiton Is it the second male lead being evil or dying an early death like his father due to their family’s curse?

2

Actually, in the cold light of morning, while it’s not noble idiocy, my worry is a stark melodramatic turn, so yeah, that’s what I’m worried about too.

@linnarick’s got it in the second half of their sentence.

Ok. I assumed it would be vampiricide but apparently the word is used for lethal pastes to kill bats! So it can’t be this.

There just don't seem to be a lot of weeknight viewers. I'd love to see "Heartbeat" do better because to my mind, it's the perfect Monday/Tuesday drama, but looking over the numbers for all shows, none of them are getting much over 3%. To that end, I'm considering "Heartbeat" a success as it's doing just as well as anything else on offer on those days.

Probably working age people are dragged to unwanted or hopefully tolerable work dinners so don’t have the time to watch any dramas during the week and the yoof are either studying or doing p/t work. It only leaves the kiddies and crumblies during the week.
