[Drama chat] The performance you’ll never forget

Dramaland is full of actors who bring their all to every role, and we love them for it. But sometimes, there’s that special actor in that special role, and something about the performance just gets elevated to masterpiece level.

Sometimes it’s a performance where the drama gives the actor so much space that their brilliance can’t help but shine (thinking of Shin Hye-sun in See You in My 19th Life here). Sometimes, it’s a script that lets out a side of an actor you’ve never seen before (like Choi Jin-hyuk in Zombie Detective). And sometimes, it’s a performance from a supporting actor who steals every scene.

Which drama performances are some of the most memorable to you?

For me, the most unforgettable performance was Kim soo hyun in its okay not to be okay. I always knew that Kim soo Hyun was a good actor. Seo ye ji and Oh jung se were great too. However, the scene where Sang tae accuses Kang tae of trying to kill him when they were children......... That's when I realized that Kim soo hyun is an ACTOR (all caps required).

Another unforgettable performance was IU in My mister. She was mind-blowingly good especially because I didn't know she had it in her. (I had only seen her in Scarlet Heart before that)

And now Shin Hye sun in See you in my 19th life, especially the scene in the screencap......

I just feel lucky to be witnessing such greatness.

I had the same reaction to IU in My Mister. I'd only seen her in You Are the Best, Lee Soon-shin, which was fine, but in My Mister she was next level.

The death scene by the shoreline, The Crowned Clown, episode 8. Yeo Jin- goo. So tragic, he is killed by poison by the person he trusts most, even at the very end.

Yeo Jin-goo has delivered numerous outstanding performances in movies and dramas that are hard to forget. He shines in serious dramas, and he is also capable at romance when paired with actresses in his age range, like as Yoo-jung and So-hyun. In "Moon Embracing the Sun," he portrayed a heart-wrenching scene where he cried for Yoo-jung's character and continued with that same emotional impact even after her passing. He portrayed the role of someone who had lost their first love or the love of their life in a very believable manner. Tragic love maybe is a good combo for him. LOL
His noona romances did not work out well. He was not mature enough or compatible with older actresses. IMO

I can't speak to the specific circumstances of any particular Korean actor, but many queer actors struggle to play straight romantic roles convincingly (as do many straight actors in queer roles). It's been nice to see an increase in LGBTQ+ roles in Asia, but I get the sense that Korean entertainment industry is still very hostile towards openly out actors. Hopefully one day that will change.

Excellent choice. I think Yeo Jin-goo’s performance in episodes 7 and 8 in THE CROWNED CLOWN (2019) (at around age 21) has to be one of the the best performances of his career. Outstanding.

I’ll never forget Oh Jung-se’s performance in Hot Stove League, on the scene wherein his pent-up angst (caused by his cousin’s looking down on him and his father) got all released during their arm wrestle. The facial acting, the tears… just wow! I know he is a great actor, but this performance made me think that there’s no way he had/would ever deliver/ed a bad performance.

Supporting actor who steals every scene: It will always be Lee Kyu-hyung for me as Looney in Prison Playbook. He made the role so charming despite being a junkie.

Oh Jung-se is so good. I just started watching Hot Stove League, at episode 5. Will lookout for that scene you've mentioned. My memorable scenes by him: his cameo as a cuckolded husband in Misaeng and I think it was episode 12 of When the Camellia Blooms, by the lake with Hyang-mi when he tells her why Dong-baek and she are not alike. His line delivery and facial expressions makes you realize that he's not that shallow at all and not all unlikable. The scene signals that there's a change of him from that scene on. He did that so well.

I had a hard time not typing his name in my comment below. I loved his Ji-pyeong in Start-Up so much, and I loved him in EVERY project he was in that I saw (YDMC included). I love that you are a realist type of a fan, not a blinded one.

I’ve seen KSH in Start Up and Hometown Cha Cha Cha, and I must say he has acting chops (though I agree with you, might not be at master level yet, but he’s getting there, we know it). Oh, delighted to see him in Chief Kim as well. I got to see that after SU and HCCC so that appearance was a surprise to me.

4

@minkathedreamer Thanks! I did watch Good Manager before, and at one point during the watch, I thought to myself, this trainee (?) is so cute he is so charismatic but that was it. I didn’t research into who he was.

That was before I watched him in Start-Up and then all was history. I knew later on that the young man I saw in Chief Kim was him. He caught my eyes since then.

3

Oh my god, Looney. I literally wanted to reach out and hug him through the screen. The depth of vulnerability and self-hatred in his eyes when he relapsed again... His desperate calls for love and support that were forever left unanswered by his family and loved one. Beautiful acting for a character that feels natural all the way through.

Memorable performance 1: Park Eun-bin as attorney Woo in Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

2: Child actor Kim Kang-hoon and Lee Sung-min in Reborn Rich. Lee Sung-min was totally charismatic in his role, and no surprises there since he's that good of an actor. But I was pleasantly surprised to see Kang-hoon hold his own against the veteran actor, and it was amazing how they both bounced off each other in their scenes together. Really impressive stuff!

3. Kim Soo-hyun in everything! ❤️

Now I really have to see Reborn Rich for Lee Sung-min. I liked him a lot in Misaeng.

As to the robbed Daesang, my own theory is that there were more strong contenders in the Best Actress category (PEB, SHK, KHS) than in the Best Actor category, so they had to give the extra award among that pool. Just my 2 cents.

There were rumors about prequel centered around his character few months ago, but that ended up fake, I believe. Shame.

In terms of a whole drama, I’m going to go with Park Ho-san as Park Seok in Would You Like a Cup of Coffee? I feel this is cheating a bit, because that drama is so delightful, soft, and thoughtful throughout, but Park Ho-san’s performance as the steadfast, strong, and watchful coffee shop owner was outstanding. He was the bedrock for his close community--a found family, really--as well as for that show to me.

In terms of an individual scene, the performance that lives completely fixed in memory is the scene in Thirty-Nine where Jin-seok (Lee Moo-saeng) begs through his grief to be allowed to live and stay by the side of Chan-young (Jeon Mi-do) as the tragedies of their past and their present comes crashing down around them both.

This drama has undergone many, many negative critiques, some of which I agree with, some of which I do not...but when I read this post's prompt, this particular performance was a no-brainer for me. These few minutes not only had me burst into ugly tears myself, I even had to step away from the drama for some time to actually process all of what I’d just experienced in my own mind and body. Truly impactful on me.

I don't remember something especially nice about Thirty Nine, but I clearly remember this scene. It was the scene that made me say that Thirty Nine understood its assignment cause it made the very decision that was living rent-free in my head and captured all the nuances - both sweet and uncomfortable, that came with it. I also remember etching Lee Moo-saeng's name in my memory after that scene.

To me, Shin Hye-Sun is talented and skilled as an actress extraordinaire, given her young age.

As pointed out by @snow flower, no other actress can do what she did in 30 but 17 and Mr Queen. These are two very unique characters that are hard to bring alive but she delivers to the T.

Then just to make sure this is on the list - Cho Seung Woo. He creates a different persona and mannerism for each role he plays. Think Hwang Shi-mo in Forest of Secrets x 2, Gu Seung-hyo in Life, and Divorced Attoeney Shin. Can’t they be more different?!

Dramaland is rife with standout performances, which makes it hard to narrow it down for a list! Like Missvictrix, I'll second Shin Hye Sun - she always gives 100%. I was very impressed with the 19th Life scene referenced here. Recently, I was also super impressed with Woo Do Hwan in Joseon Attorney. The drama itself was uneven, but he was phenomenal, and his acting in ep 14 was heartbreakingly good. Not a recent drama, but a recent watch for me - Yoon Shi Yoon in Psychopath Diary. It was a challenging role, and he nailed the tonal shifts and emotional complexity. For other dramas, I think of ML/FL pairings where they elevate each other to new heights of excellence... Kim Young Kwang and Lee Sung Kyung in Call it Love; Jung Il Woo and Kwon Yuri in Bossam: Steal the Fate (I always remember the prison scene where they're on either side of the bars and are crying while just Looking at each other). And there are many others!

That was the pivotal moment when Ha Young cracked the code of his job. The tonal shift from an unsure detective to a confident profiler was so subtle yet palpable, something unachievable in the hands of a weaker actor. She is my favorite actress for a reason. She was a revelation in Another Oh Hae-young (great chemistry with Eric), and she was excellent in every role I saw her in. Even when the show is boring, she is able to make herself shine (case in point: You’re My Spring).

She seems most comfortable in an ordinary woman kind of roles to me. I think she was excellent in AOH and Romantic Doctor 1. She was so-so in YAMS and Beauty Inside. Never managed to watch Temperature of Love because of my aversion to the actor playing ML, and Why Her seemed to be horribly written.

He was amazing in Duel, I was sad I couldn't continue watching him when I dropped it at ep8. But that show was way too brutal for me.

Yes, (thanks for giving me his name), I do have an ever soon to him, and that’s why I avoided 30 but 17.

@mmmmm. I know your love of your baby - that’s why I can’t understand your aversion to Yang Se-Jong. He is one wonderful actor with both look and acting chop. You surely have watched Dr Kim S1 which might be the only one occasion where he’s playing a less likeable character - but knowing your usual drama preference, you must watch 30 But 17 which is the most delightful drama in recent memory. Please please give it a try.

I do however agree Temperature of Love should be avoided at all costs.

Hmmm… I did try 30 but 17 sometime ago. Somehow, I just didn’t like YSJ. My controversial (I suppose?) opinion is that he looks and acts boring. I don’t feel anything watching him. Like if PMY is an ice queen, he would be an ice king. There seems to be no warmth to his characters based on my limited watching of him in 1-2 eps of Temperature of Love and Dr Kim 1. His facial expression rarely changes also, which is the same case with PMY.

But I might try it again in the future, so thanks for the recommendation. I know many Beans love it, and tbh every time I read someone likes it I go 🧐🤨🧐.

Yeo Jin-goo in Circle - throughout that show, but the scene that stands out for me is when he's begging his brother to give up on his pursuit of aliens and return to reality and a normal life. It's hard to believe he was only 19 when he filmed that. He's also fantastic in Beyond Evil, as is Shin Ha-kyun; they really brought out the best in each other.

Jo Seung-woo rightfully gets praised for his role in Stranger, and he was extraordinary, but Bae Doona was amazing too.

Gong Yoo -Goblin, episode 16 when he meets Eun Tak in Reaper’s Tea Room. His eyes, facial expressions, body posture and sounds/noises of grief are so impactful, it’s heartbreaking to watch. Every time I watch the scene I end up a blubbering mess as it feels so real.

Lee Dong Wook- Goblin, episode 12 and 13 in period costume as the downward spiralling manic, obsessive king, Wang Yeo. Just… wow, so believable and absolutely fantastic.
The best I have ever seen him act to this day.
In Episode 12, Lee Dong Wook as Wang Yeo asking his queen Yoo In-ah to choose between himself or her brother, the traitor. She chooses her brother. The acting showing the complex emotions is simply mesmerising in its intensity. The best I have seen of Yoo In-ah as well.

Oh yes I ugly cried during Eun Tak's farewell scene! Impactful. I read that it took a while for Gong Yoo to recover from acting this scene, he delved into some real emotions. Goblin is not one of my favorite shows but I did appreciate GY's portrayal of someone who is strong but who feels vulnerable and alone. And I also loved Lee Dong Wook in Goblin! The two of them together are gold.

Kim Sung-Cheol was lovely in the mini drama To Jenny. Everybody should watch it! It will take less than three hours of your life and you won't stop smiling.

You people have convinced me to watch To. Jenny. I always find Kim Sun-Cheol charismatic but it is the recent musical Shakespeare In Love that makes me want him to play a drama lead role.

Check out his pairing with Jung So-Ming in SIL curtain call: https://youtu.be/0LH5LVPRS5Y
