I'm not a fan of possession stories. However I loved this drama. It had a compelling and interesting story and a great cast.
So far it's one of the two best dramas of 2023 alongside Call it Love and Also the best horror Korean series of all.

Oh, hello kdrama sister. Call It Love and Revenant are also my two favorite kdramas of 2023 so far.

For a 12 episode drama, the writing was suprisingly uneven and not tight as it could be, especially for such an experienced writer. However, I love the premise and wealth and depth of information, she has lots of great ideas and does her research. I think she, as well as every writer, would benefit from having someone go through their script and fix parts of it to make it more smooth and less bumpy. There were scenes and lines that sounded like they were written by a student. Dramas with co-writers are particularly strong because you have someone to point out your blindspots and because every writer has different strengths and can contribute what they're good at (ex, humorous scenes)

She's good at writing but needs some help with improving certain scenes. I'm holding her to a super high standard here because she wrote Signal.

I wonder if the writer actually works alone, I would suppose she has helpers working on some parts?

So, first things first - it's amazing. No, really. Writing could've do more polishing in certain aspects, but everything else is so great that it hardly bothers you. Concept is fantastic and folklore bits give the show unique flavor for the genre. Speaking of which - it is NOT the horror. If you're looking for rivers of blood, hideous monsters (that are not humans) and many jumpscares, this is not the drama for you. This is an occult thriller about k-shamanism, ghosts and exploration of darkness of human nature. So expect more psychological suspense than anything else. There's still quite a lot of violence (mostly real and fake suicides - TONS of them, you've been warned), gloominess and heartbreak, but the ending is just and satisfying, so hang on there, it's only 12 episodes anyway. In fact, you're likely gonna regret it's ONLY 12 episodes once you finish it... Doubly recommend if you love the leads, they're fire, esp KTR.

The suicide trigger warning really is a must. Folks kill themselves like nobodies business. And if you're late to the game, the recaps are great where Gikata and other commentators talk out the plot and other issues that might stump you.

There is TW at the start of each episode, so at least show is self-aware in this regard)))

This will likely make the list of the top shows of 2023, deservedly so. An occult thriller (rather than a horror gore fest), that's not only a tricky, twisty ride until the end, but also a deeply emotional story centered around greed and revenge, loss and generational trauma, and what it means to survive in an unforgiving world.

The show is anchored by an award-winning performance by Kim Tae-Ri, but the other women also deserve a shout-out, including Shim Dal Gi, who makes a brief but memorable appearance. The men too played quieter, but impactful, sensitively done parts.

And yes, the show has some plot holes, conveniences, even some silliness, but it was still a thrilling story with great characterizations that expertly weaved in folkore and traditions in manner rarely seen. And, in a rarity, it provided an ending that most will find satisfying.

TL;DR: A creepy, twisty occult thriller steeped in folkore and elevated by top-tier acting. Watch it.

I enjoy a good horror mystery, and I think the writer did great here. I was a bit worried it will become a bit too procedural at first, but then I guess the first 4 eps is more in finding their footing. Are there some inconsistencies, yes, but so far the main mystery and plot are really grounded and sound, so I forgive the others.

The performances of all is amazing esp Kim Tae Ri, when she changes personality , there is such a marked but subtle differences.. All deserved accolades ( except the mom, I dont know is it the writing or acting but she continues to grate .. )

Was it scary? At first. Then it just become a very engaging horror mystery . Personally my top drama of this year so far.

the mom... I think the script made her out to be too silly, the kind of childish drama mom that inadvertently causes trouble and can't be trusted and is susceptible to scams, although she is sweet and loving. I think it was unnecessary to make her this kind of tropey scam-magnet. I wanted her character to be more dignified and a source of emotional support for the female lead. Drama had enough going on without a mom causing trouble haha.

One side effect of watching this drama is that I will be forever terrified of traditional Korean houses after sunset...

Sounds way too nasty and specific to be made up((( Plus there were no "scandals" regarding writer's creative use of folklore, and we know how eternally triggered knetz are about their history, culture etc. My bet is that trees, curses and rituals were real, and only 5 objects/ghost stuff were fictional addition.

I looked this up when the show was airing because I was just haunted by the idea of the trees and those pots of...shudder. I could not find anything in English. Tho I did learn trees are popular burial site.

I think you're right tho. There's no way the writer could have made this up and not received a backlash. I suspect this was a regional custom that may not be much talked about anymore. Would love someone acquainted with the folklore to shed a light.

Actually, you might just have to give up SK all together. The show makes just about every locale scary at points.

No zombies! Not even horror (there were complaints about that in some other part of the Internet). Just overall creepy and some small scares.

I would say the show is more haunting than anything, esp. emotionally so. But yeah, it might be too much for some. You can only watch a bit and decide for yourself.
