Oh! Young-shim: Episodes 5-6

Our midpoint comes with jealousy, the formation of an unholy alliance, and we get a confession, too. But whichever side our characters’ feelings fall on, it’s production o’clock, and the show must go on!

Following last week’s tripping and falling over and screaming at each other in the bathroom, Young-shim and Kyung-tae hurriedly grab — and wear — each other’s clothes as they rush downstairs to stop Wol-sook and Chae-dong from coming upstairs. And while they come up with an excuse for their ungodly scream (which could be heard from outside the house), their wet hair and clothes is enough to signal to Wol-sook and Chae-dong that something happened upstairs.

Before long, Wol-sook learns that Young-shim and Kyung-tae are planning a new show, and she indicates interest — or rather, bulldozes her way into being a part of the show. After manipulating the Arrows of Love results with Kyung-tae, Young-shim is reluctant to bring Wol-sook onboard, but Wol-sook sells herself as a dating professional and the only one with actual dating experience of the three.

Young-shim agrees for Wol-sook to join the show on a “no manipulation like the last time” basis, and Wol-sook agrees to the condition. But I don’t trust her. Especially now that Chae-dong has joined her alliance — in addition to an existing arrangement he has with Ji-yu to send him updates about Kyung-tae’s activities in their house. Aigoo!

Wol-sook joins team Kingvely at the next meeting with Young-shim’s production team, but neither side can come to an agreement on the direction to take the show. In the middle of the production vs Kingvely debate, Chae-dong storms out after getting a text from Ji-yu spilling the tea on Young-shim and Kyung-tae’s little bathroom tryst, and at this point, he has had it with Kyung-tae’s extended stay at Young-shim’s house. In the meantime, Wol-sook suggests a work retreat to calm everyone’s nerves, and off they go to the Kingvely private beach. Yes, Kyung-tae owns a beach!

But what’s a work retreat without physical activities? And what’s a better physical activity than a war of the testosterone between two men in a love triangle? Heh. Chae-dong and Kyung-tae have a wrestling match with an increase in their production budget and Kingvely’s product placement on the line, and Kyung-tae wins by a hairsbreadth. And for the three legged race, Chae-dong pairs with Young-shim and Wol-sook pushes to join Kyung-tae. But she ends up sacrificing the race on the altar of skinship with Kyung-tae, and team production takes the win!

Kyung-tae might have won at wrestling, but his ankle bears the brunt of his win. And as Young-shim tends to his twisted ankle, they reflect on a childhood memory at the beach. Kyung-tae had saved Young-shim from drowning, but at that time, she pretended not to know who saved her. Why did she pretend? She didn’t want to admit the CPR he administered on her was her first kiss. Lol. Transferring the spotlight to Kyung-tae, Young-shim asks why he emigrated without saying goodbye. But before he gives his reason, Wol-sook interrupts them for a truth or dare session.

The first spin is directed at Kyung-tae, and he’s asked if he thinks first love comes true. His reply: I think it does. The bottle spins towards him again, and he’s asked if he has feelings for someone present at the retreat. It’s all pins and needles for Young-shim, Wol-sook, and Chae-dong, but Kyung-tae chooses to go for the penalty: a love shot with Chae-dong. Heh.

When the bottle gets to Young-shim, she’s asked about her last skinship, and she replies that she hasn’t had any skinship recently. And that’s when an already tipsy Kyung-tae downs another shot and bangs the glass on the table with a “Then what happened between us the other day?” Eek!

Young-shim launches into denial mode and over-explanations as she relives the bathroom experience, but thankfully, everyone’s attention soon shifts to another drunk member of the production team who has a girl problem. Kyung-tae and Young-shim have conflicting advice for the lovelorn production staff, and they end up making a bet as to whose advice will work better. Kyung-tae’s advice works, leading the other members of the production team to suck up to him for dating advice, and voilà! A new concept for the show is born!

Introducing: Love Mark — a dating reality show where Kyung-tae and Young-shim help young people move from the flirting stage to dating. A show helmed by a PD and a panelist who have different opinions on practically everything? Sign me up! It already sounds like a disaster in the making, but then again, if everything goes according to plan, where’s the fun in that?

After some back and forth, Kyung-tae and Young-shim come to an agreement on Love Mark’s first guest — a guy with an unrequited love for his colleague, and the colleague agrees to go on the show, too. As the production team set up for a temple stay shoot at a Buddhist temple, Young-shim and Chae-dong go to make a wish at the wishing rock.

Young-shim asks her hoobae what his wish is, and Chae-dong gathers all his nerves to confess his feelings to her. “My wish is for you to like me too,” he says, and his unexpected confession literally knocks Young-shim off her feet. Like clockwork, she trips into his waiting arms. But guess who’s just a few paces away from the wishing rock? It’s Kyung-tae! Hehehe.

So far so good — this drama continues to be a light hearted shut-off-your-brain watch with no bad vibes in sight except for Wol-sook — which is to be expected, because just like the other 2D characters on the show, that’s why she exists in the plot. But she’s not poised to do serious damage, so she can be ignored to some extent. In the meantime, we’ve got two weeks left. So can the OTP stop bickering like kids and get on with their romance already?

@unit thank you for the weecap. I thought the whole ‘getting caught out’ in their own home by people accessing the house without permission is where the conversation should have started rather than being made to feel they had to explain anything to anyone.

Wolsook is really annoying, if she is such a pro why isn’t she in a serious relationship?

The teenage interpretation of the skinship was so funny.

Re the couple on the show they were such good friends why not just tell him she has family issues to deal with so they can’t spend time together in the same way and due to the nature of the issues she is withdrawing from their friendship to be colleagues again. He would understand and no need to be on national tv to end it warmly.

I can’t believe this finishes next week when things are so up in the air. I want to know about the misunderstanding about the headphones and his leaving without a goodbye. The deserve to end up with each other as they are so hung up on the past issues.

Wouldn't it finish in two weeks, since it's 10 eps?

Yes my mistake. I misread it, I thought next week was too soon so that makes more sense.

It's quite a boring drama... Every character is kinda a cliché and nothing makes them more real or deep.

We got the cold ML, the messy FL, the snake female second lead and the puppy male second lead... I have no idea why the main leads could love each other.

I'm really starting to hate the second ML. I usually dislike second MLs to begin with, but I find it especially galling when they interfere with the main couple.

I don't think the romance is well developed unless you just accept that they both liked each other and never really stopped. Also the show is just more palatable in general if you think of them as 90s cartoon characters and not real people. FL has calmed down a lot, which helps.

" Also the show is just more palatable in general if you think of them as 90s cartoon characters and not real people. "

That's how I watch it and although I don't get up early, early in the am to watch this (unlike some other k-drama releases), I try to find the time to watch on the day of release.

Those unmatched coffee mugs that the foursome used? all straight out of the '90s.

This will never be in my Top 10 of anything but it's fun, I'm looking forward to a happy ending for the Main Couple and these days, I don't ask for much more than that.

I rarely care about the SML and same in this drama, if for no other reason than I'm not into unrequited noona stories . He was a charmer in Crash Course in Romance and fortunately for the actor, he is very young and has a great future in front of him.

‘ I'm looking forward to a happy ending for the Main Couple and these days, I don't ask for much more than that.’ 👈🏾 How did this became the big ask it seems to be these days? It’s so sad that if we get it we are so grateful. That’s the only reason I am still watching this live action cartoon. I fully expect a literal walk into the sunset with words ‘The End’ flashing up on the screen as the picture fades to black.

I wonder if the childhood relationship between the FL and the ML was affected by her dad's writing the cartoon and mining all her embarrassing moments for the plot. Even as an adult she's still wary about letting her dad know what's going on in her life. Maybe this constant lack of privacy made her extra resistant to Kyungtae's persistent interest when they were kids, and she resented him for putting himself in her "story" and reducing her ability to shape a narrative that was eventually going to be further manipulated by her dad.

I’m enjoying this drama a lot; it’s very cartoony and light. It’s not going to break any records but I don’t think it’s trying to.

I laughed every time they flashed back to the Falling On (it is one of my favourite tropes because it is so silly); and also at the extremely helpful smart watch that was giving Kyeong Tae away whenever his heart started racing 😄.

The smart watch's responses to his orders were hilarious! That watch has some attitude.
