Heartbeat: Episodes 1-2

Listen to my heartbeat! (It’s waiting for you!) On a mission to become mortal, our vampire hero is determined to reunite with his lost love — until our human heroine inadvertently causes his plans to go awry. With just the right amount of camp and theatrics, this drama is all set to take us on a fun fantasy ride.

EPISODES 1-2

Ok taecyeon and Yoon So-hee in Heartbeat: Episodes 1-2

Our fantasy fairytale begins with a frantic chase through the forest. In a time where immortal beings existed and humans craved the power in their blood, vampire SEON WOO-HYUL (Taecyeon) flees from his mortal pursuers with YOON HAE-SUN (Yoon So-hee) in tow.

Drastically outnumbered by his enemies and their silver-tipped arrows, Woo-hyul resorts to his vampiric abilities, vanquishing the army in mere seconds. But just as Hae-sun sinks into his relieved embrace, one particularly tenacious soldier draws his bow. Woo-hyul doesn’t notice the arrow aimed at his back, but Hae-sun does, and she takes the shot in his stead.

Overcome with grief, Woo-hyul cradles his dying lover close. Hae-sun promises that they’ll find each other again in their next lives and rekindle their love, then urges Woo-hyul to drink her blood.

Cut to Woo-hyul in a coffin, in the early 20th century, ready to slumber for the next hundred years. He’s flanked by his fellow fanged friends LEE SANG-HAE (Yoon Byung-hee) and PARK DONG-SEOB (Go Kyu-pil), who are extra dramatic about sealing their pal away. Before we launch into our hero’s story, though, we’re given a rundown of this universe’s vampiric lore.

First of all, these vampires consume blood only sparingly. Though they’re averse to sunlight, they’re able to go outdoors during the daytime; the only drawback is that it increases their thirst for blood. (I guess he ought to avoid leaving the house at 2PM.) The worst part about being a vampire — at least for the vain Woo-hyul — is that they can’t see themselves in mirrors. Hah, given all the attention he gets while walking down the street, I’m sure he knows he’s handsome anyway.

Ok Taecyeon and Kim In-kwon in Heartbeat: Episodes 1-2

In order to fulfill his promise to Hae-sun, Woo-hyul’s determined to become human and experience a love that will ignite his heartbeat. He’s tried everything, from stuffing his mouth with garlic to kowtowing across the ages at a temple.

Unfortunately, nothing works until he meets GO YANG-NAM (Kim In-kwon), a cat who managed to transform into a man. (His name literally means Cat Man, LOL.) Woo-hyul’s eager to learn his secrets, and a flash of magical insight gives Yang-nam the answer — Woo-hyul must sleep in a hawthorn wood coffin for a century.

Determined to achieve his goal, Woo-hyul bids farewell to his loyal — but mortal — BUTLER JOO (Park Chul-min), entrusting the house to him and his descendants. With that, Woo-hyul’s buddies seal him in the coffin, and we fast forward to the present day.

Ok Taecyeon and Won Ji-ahn in Heartbeat: Episodes 1-2 Ok Taecyeon and Won Ji-ahn in Heartbeat: Episodes 1-2

Our human heroine, JOO IN-HAE (Won Ji-ahn), is in a bit of a predicament. Her fraudster landlord has just fled with her housing deposit, and a rescue from homelessness has come in the most unexpected manner. After being missing for five years, her father has been declared legally dead, which means In-hae can now receive his inheritance.

That includes his mansion, which gives a relieved In-hae a roof over her head. Venturing into its depths, phone flashlight in hand, she discovers the coffin and hoists the lid open — only to get a shock when Woo-hyul crawls right out. She’s baffled by his spiel about being the true owner of the house — excuse you, she owns the title deed — and she’s about two seconds away from calling the cops.

Except Woo-hyul realizes he’s tempted by the scent of a wound on In-hae’s arm, and a glance in the mirror returns a translucent reflection. Unfortunately for our sleeping beauty, he’s fallen one day short of his hundred-year mission. Oops.

Woo-hyul advances on In-hae menacingly, threatening that she’ll be punished for breaking the agreement. Doesn’t she know how toxic hawthorn wood is to vampires? Won’t she think of all the muscle aches he had to endure? Woo-hyul bares his teeth, inches away from biting her neck — except In-hae chomps down first. HAHAHA, I love her!

Stunned by the bite, Woo-hyul collapses in a dead faint, scaring In-hae enough that she takes him to the hospital. There, Woo-hyul’s lack of a heartbeat has him pronounced dead, until he’s revived by the scent of another patient’s blood. It’s ridiculous, it’s campy, and it’s absolutely hilarious.

In-hae has had enough of Woo-hyul’s nonsense, and she hops in a taxi to head home. Lost in the newly unfamiliar modern world, Woo-hyul wanders the streets again and again until he finally navigates his way back to the mansion. To his dismay, he can’t prove his tall tales to In-hae — he’s lost all his powers, leaving him hissing at his nonexistent fangs and doing increasingly frustrated bunny hops in an effort to fly.

The next morning, In-hae is rudely awoken with bad news that sends her running back to her old home. Since her landlord has sold the building and eloped, the building is about to be torn down, and the demolition crew rudely throws out her belongings when she tries to protest.

Thankfully, the real estate CEO SHIN DO-SHIK (Park Kang-hyun) swiftly puts a stop to their belligerent behavior, and the two immediately recognize each other. Aww, they’d had a meet-cute when they’d crashed into each other on their college campus and she’d nursed the scrape on his hand. It had been love at first sight for Do-shik — look at those puppy eyes! — and he’s glad to see In-hae again. The independent In-hae is reluctant to accept any help, so Do-shik leaves her with his name card and a promise that he’s only one phone call away.

On her way home, In-hae comes across the fraudster landlord, and she immediately gives chase, bent on getting her money back. As she runs after him, she almost gets hit by a car, and her bite mark on Woo-hyul’s neck throbs painfully. Ooh, are they connected?

Thanks to a vial of blood that Yang-nam gave him, Woo-hyul regains just enough vampiric power to track down In-hae and save her from the aggressive landlord. Bending a steel pipe with his bare hands, Woo-hyul makes quick work of the fraudster — and when a knife cut on Woo-hyul’s cheek heals itself in mere seconds, In-hae can no longer deny that he’s a supernatural being. Extending his hand to her, Woo-hyul asks if she finally believes him. “Let’s go home.”

I’m having a blast, and so is the cast! I expected cheesy camp and hilarious hijinks, and I’m happy to report that the drama delivers on both fronts. It may tick some familiar fantasy rom-com beats, but it keeps things fresh with a sprinkling of offbeat details: Woo-hyul getting drunk on instant ramyun was priceless, and the oddball cat-man might just be my favorite character.

I came into this drama bracing myself for second lead syndrome, but I’m starting to think that might not be much of a problem. As a fan of musical actor Park Kang-hyun, I’m definitely enjoying his screen debut (and anticipating his OST!) — but our OTP has such an entertaining dynamic. I love that the miscommunication remains lighthearted, and that the power imbalance is evened out by Woo-hyul’s goofiness and In-hae’s fearlessly feisty attitude.

The drama is already sowing the seeds for conflict to come, and I’m anticipating how it’ll all play out. Do-shik seems to have a medical condition related to his heart, which ties into the main theme so well that there has to be something more to it. Then there’s also the young and impertinent vampire RI MAN-HWI (Baek Seo-hoo), who blatantly flouted Woo-hyul’s club rules a century ago — surely he’s only gotten bolder since.

Woo-hyul will definitely have his work cut out for him, but that only makes me more excited for him to team up with In-hae. After all, like Yang-nam pointed out, no ordinary human would have been able to open a coffin containing a slumbering vampire. In-hae’s a special case, and who knows? She might just be Woo-hyul’s special someone.

im not quite convinced yet, at parts it felt a bit forced. I can see what they wanted to convey, like Taec being stranded in an unfamiliar place like an expat with no guidance but I would have edited it a bit differently and included some wide pan seeing him go here and there from across the street or maybe drone shots.
I think you can make this work and I can FEEL the ideas behind some scenes but the execution...lacks spices.

Thanks for being super on top of this weecap @solstices! This was So. Much. Fun.

Episode 1 was mostly setup, for sure, but still totally enjoyable. But then episode 2 really delivered on the premise! We’ve already gotten fish out of water hijinks, drunk-on-ramyeon Woo-hyeol, AND we were treated to very cool vampire Woo-hyeol at the end. I’m so glad they didn’t drag out In-hae’s disbelief too long, I’m excited to get to the parts where she has to cover for him as they both figure out what on earth is going on with him/them.

I LOVED when she bit his neck first! It was such an unexpected move for literally everyone (him, her, me, etc.) and illustrated her character so well! She was able to open the coffin, which already makes her special, but I thought it was hilarious that it was her bite mark that alerted Woo-hyeol to the fact that she was in danger.

I love the fact that Woo-hyeol didn’t start out as a half-vampire, as some of the promos seemed to suggest, but instead became a weird hybrid because his scheme almost succeeded. I have so many questions about this cat character and why he knows so much, but am happy to wait and accept whatever wild explanation I am presented with.

That house is honestly hilarious. It looks like someone has been coming in every six months to dust for the past 100 years - and In-hae could just walk upstairs and sleep in a bed right away? The mattress didn’t disintegrate sometime in the last century? But while I had a good incredulous chuckle at all of it, I really don’t care. It doesn’t ruin anything for me, and it’s still a very cool setting for what I hope will be a big chunk of the drama.

Maybe that was what family butlers have been doing all those years, after all InHae's dad was been missing only for the five last years.

I think his father is not missing, but... where? The actor in the photo is known (I'm struggling to identify a drama of him so I can recognise his name, and failing so far) so he will appear in the future, I guess.

Thank you for the recap! I love this so much!!! What a fun opening week. I was hoping for humor, but I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did. Taecyeon is charming, goofy, and cool, and the FL is strong enough to make the vampire back down😂 Lots of fun ingredients were set up this week, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I'm actually really enjoying this drama way more than I thought I would. I wasn't even going to watch it but it airs during a time I have nothing else to watch. Can someone answer, the actress who plays the past love is not the FL, right?

8
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

That’s right. But since the actress who plays his past love also gets high billing, I wonder if she’ll return in her reincarnated form causing confusion for our hero. But since she’s not the FL, I think our vampire will reject the reincarnated love trope and end with FL. Total speculation.

6

Required fields are marked *

Or May be this FL is the reincarnated first love. Koreans are obsessed with first love so I highly doubt he will fall in love with someone that’s not his first love.
Given that she has some special connection with him (she can open the coffin and her bite has made a connection) I expect it all to the back to the past life. Total speculation here too!

I was kinda hoping the FL wouldn't be his reincarbated first love, too. I think it'd be more interesting. But yeah, I doubt it

5

I buy this. So far and according to Catman, if she could open the coffin it's because she is special, and as you said, considering how obsessed Korea is about "first love" (except in Start Up...) I was a bit confused about how Hae Sun would fit in the present. Making In Hae her reincarnation might be the answer.

1

Required fields are marked *

It does look like the first love also plays the 2FL. Maybe she is the reincarnated love and for once the ML won't end up with his first love? We can hope! Although yeah, I'm not gonna place any bets on that, lol.

Yeah. While the others have a valid case, it was the first love’s second billing that got me speculating. From our lips to the drama gods’ ears. Cos WJA is fantastic as our FL. She’s neither afraid of vampires, nor first love tropes.

I haven’t watched much of Taec and I didn’t really like his acting in Vincenzo. I found his acting to be over the top. But for this drama his exaggerated acting works. Still not charmed but it works 😅

I do love the FL. She is charming. And I like her acting too.

And, as with others above, our FL has all of my heart—something that rarely happens to me—which puts me in this for the ride. I found myself often more interested in her reaction to a shared situation than his. She’s so insistently present. Love it.

I agree with you on this one in terms of the FL--she's thus far been able to sustain the balance between light and serious (in terms of missing Dad, being thrown out of her apartment and losing her deposit, etc.) The vampire backstory in the first episode seemed really forced, like the writer was campily thinking , lets makes this campy, so that viewers will say "what campy fun." After the bite, which was good twist, the second episode settled down and I enjoyed it much more. There is still worrisome potential for campy melodrama rather campy humor, however, which will make me an unhappy camper.

Hearbeat promised us high camp, and it delivered. What fun! I rarely jibe with dramaland humor, but I had a few good laugh-out-moments with this one. This show doesn’t take itself seriously at all, neither will I.

I don’t know too much about OTY but I appreciate an idol ready to make fun of himself.
Director: Mewl like a hungry cat at the windowpane.
OTY: Done
Director: Bunny hop to the ceiling as if you can fly.
OTY: Done
And does my man look fine in a suit. He may give Junho a run for his money on that count. He definitely wins the brow game.

I also really liked WJA as our FL, a great no-nonsense foil to our goofy vampire. Yes, perhaps she’s not that smart if she’s opening coffins in the cellar of an abandoned house. But that’s a genre requirement no?

As everyone said, can they sustain this level of wackiness for 16 episodes? I have my doubts. But for now, I can’t wait for the next episodes to see what these two get up to next.

That windowpane/ramen scene and the bunny-hopping and levitation-flexing made me laugh so hard. I really enjoy that Taecyeon doesn't take himself too seriously to go all-in with physical comedy!! But he can also turn on the charm. Great suits abound in dramaland right now!👍

I liked all characters so far, although I'm missing present HaeSun and how she fits in the story. It will be interesting.

As for InHae, I love her. When that student entered the room and she read the signs, she just did the best for her. I can't wait to see more about her. Won Ji An was my absolute 2022 crush as I posted during last year's RoundUp, and she continues to be!!

I don’t know about SK but real estate developers/gentrifiers in fiction are often a shortcut for villainy where I am. (Reality of course is more complex.)

Now it makes me wonder if that dilapidated house will become a battleground of sorts. One side wanting to tear it down for “progress.” The other wanting to restore it to its nightclub glory.

3

Required fields are marked *

For sure, that was my thought too. FL needing the money and having no real ties to the house, ML insisting it is his and wanting to reclaim what he had - I can see it working that way. And it would certainly give us more material to fill the 16 episodes, which I know some Beanies are worried about. SML/love from the past is also a real estate person, so I'm sure she'll complicate things when she shows up.

4

Required fields are marked *

Now, we have some possible conflicts lined up to fill up the 16 episodes:
- Will the first love trope win?
- Will the house be a source of conflict?
- Will the sickly 2ML need immortal blood?

I like it!

I've said it all on the fan wall so I'm just going to do a replay here!

Sometimes comedies almost make me believe I don't like comedy as a genre. Until something silly like Heartbeat comes around and my faith in my potential to laugh at simple jokes is completely restored.

Disclaimer: I love vampires. I like all kinds of monsters really but vamps are always at the top of that food chain. That's it though. That's all this drama had going for it. I don't care about anyone on the cast, I'm sometimes convinced kdramas forgot how to do comedy, or even decent fantasy, and I don't crave romance enough to make me ignore absurdities.

This had little chance of being any good and it certainly had no business making me laugh or becoming very curious and yet it did both!

Well done show! You did all you had to do. Just take a simple premise and explore many possible silly outcomes, laughing at the situations but not at the expense of character's credibility or audience. Tell me some of the lore so I can get behind the reasoning of the fantastical element and become intrigued. Make me care about the main characters showing their motivations and throw them in each other's path. Now, keep it up for the next 15 eps!
Ok Mr. Vampire, if you throw time travel in the mix as well how can I possibly have an impartial opinion? Second ep was as adorable as first and I only have 3 minor complaints.

1- Why is he running around hungry after being locked for a century? Let him feed! He would have bitten something even if it was just a mouse!

2- How is he not amazed by phones?

3- Mr Ko as a human even looks like a cat but he is too convenient. He appears to tell him the hows and whys and move the plot along in the most shameless way. Do I care? Not really.

ps: His suits are even better than those of a certain hotelier making waves elsewhere and he doesn't even need slowmo to do it. :P

Due to Amazon Prime making it exceedingly difficult for me to actually find (thanks to beanie guidance, discovered I could only locate it by searching by Taecyeon) and then watch this (I cannot speak to the accuracy of the subtitles, but my god can I rant about their delayed or not-at-all appearance every 10 lines or so), and the fact that I've only seen the first episode, I liked this.

I'm a vampire girl, so I'll watch pretty much any media that features them. I like the sexy, dark vampires best, but also have a soft spot for campy, goofy ones. This show tries to have it both ways and I'm not entirely sure it's successful (as tall and adorable as Taec is, and acknowledging he's won the brow game, I found the constant repetition of women gawking at his incredible handsomeness to be a bit much). The special effects are also pretty terrible, and the supporting cast needs edgier writing.

BUT I love the FL, especially the fact that she's not a reincarnated version of his first love. The actress is one of the few things I remember fondly about "Wish Upon Me" and I'm happy to see her playing a much more likeable and sympathetic character. Great choice for this role.

The tone also (mostly) works despite my misgivings as stated above. I didn't laugh much, but I smiled a lot, which is just as good. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a kpop fan and as such, have not and will not get any 2pm references, so I can't speak to any meta fun that might be happening. But I like cat man!

Right now, this show fits in nicely with the other ones I'm watching, and doesn't bore me, so I'm here for it.

Oh that was so ridiculous. Right after he states vampires have learned to blend in with humans, he goes strutting down the streets of old Seoul in a red suit, with an entourage and a fancy car. It had to be a deliberate choice by the show, no?

I think you may like Episode 2 as well. It’s funnier, and FL definitely calls him on his vanity. I love that the drama did not pretty her up. Girl’s too busy trying to survive. And it makes a fun contrast to our goofy hero.

Aahhhh. This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. It’s completely ridiculous and I love it. How can Taec be so funny just *sniffing*? The old-time Hollywood horror movie sound effects are a perfect match for the over-the-top acting, cheesy visual effects, and vampire vamping.

I’m not sure how long the show can keep this up, but for now, I’m not going to nitpick or Go Crazy about nonsensical plot points. I’m just going to enjoy it.

Taecyeon and Cat Guy are camping it up, and I had fun watching - especially episode 2 - so, yes. Part of the joy of camp is having a foil who seemingly doesn’t get it, and Won Ji-an is filling that role well so far with her annoyance at his absurd fantasy problems while she’s dealing with very real ones. I wonder if that last chase scene is will turn out to be representative of the show as a whole, with the scammy landlord sliding from Salvation Army farce to weapon-wielding real danger (and with too much “where’d he go?” downtime). It’s a tough balancing act to pull off. The further this heads in a “Rocky Horror” direction, the happier I’ll be.

Thanks @solstices for the great HEARTBEAT episodes one and two recap.
First off I loved both episodes. Being a guy of a certain age kpop has never been on my radar except for a few occasions and when performers enter kdramaland. Your links are terrific and giving me a needed education. I knew the first two sentences of your recap had to come from the tune “Heartbeat” and checked out the lyrics.
I tell you though, the Park Kang-hyun (Do-shik) link of him singing was a huge revelation. What a voice. A great tenor. (Being an opera buff I could picture him on stage belting out great Puccini arias. Apologies for the diversion.) A few rambling thoughts:
1. Taec, Woo Ji-an and the rest of the cast are nailing their parts. Just great. The humor was spot on;
2. The mansion and Club Shaded Oasis are the same place. Beautiful set design and I loved the early 1920s scenes. (I Shazamed the jazz tune being played and didn’t get a response so it must be ost).
One of the best lines in episode one was in the club when Dong-seob threatened someone bad mouthing Woo-hyul to “knock your fangs out”.
3. O/T. I recall that late in 2021 Taec and Junho went head to head with dramas airing simultaneously: Taec in SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR & JOY and Junho in THE RED SLEEVE both available on Viki US. Looking only at the ratings Junho won that contest and will probably win this one as well with KING THE LAND. However, I watched both above dramas (I am passing on KTL) and SRI&J was my favorite of the two.
I will repeat something from back then, in the area of romance Taec does ‘sweet’ beautifully, leave the ‘heavy breathing’ to Junho lol.

PS. Did the makeup person in TRACER (2022) (Viki US) who was responsible for Siwan’s plum lipstick/gloss join in this production? When I saw Do-shik (Park Kang-hyun) get up from the bicycle mishap back in college all I could see was his plum lips (perhaps an expert knows the shade of what was on his lips). His sweatshirt probably accented his face. I said to myself, “here we go again”. There will be no smooching with all that stuff on his lips.

Where are your manners? Everybody knows, no smooching allowed during the first episodes.
Kinky biting apparently is fine, so there you go.

Will we get a the new smooch 2.0 version where the suspected male antagonist nibbles blood from the ear of the ML and the FL saves the day by planting her very human-sized fangs into someone's plump buttocks? Not that I would complain, but this wasn't quite what I had in mind when I join. But I've never seen vampiric smooch, so I should be prepared to open my mind and my jaw.

having seen now episode 3, I would class it as smooch version 2.1 — the smooch that nobody would not have imagined. The smooch that shan't be named. The smooch that comes with its own mind horcrux and that will come to haunt your thoughts for days no end. The smooch with a capital Fang.

I’ll take them both please. Junho can smolder away on the weekends and Taec can ham it up during the week. Win. Win.

This is my first Taec drama and I do not know if he has always been good at physical comedy and comic expressions, but this guy seems to take those scenes seriously and delivers it. Him worshipping Buddha with much dedication (as if he was a real vampire trying to become a human) made me guffaw.

He was amazing at physical comedy in SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR AND JOYI too.

But he was also great in BLIND. Long gone are the days when he was a mediocre actor.

@midnight, totally agree with your take on Taec's acting. I now can completely lose myself in his characters (and their magnificent pair of radar-like ears) rather than only seeing Taecyeon in a costume.

I wouldn't necessarily say mediocre actor. I'd say that writers love throwing pop faces/idols into bland roles just to get their faces on screen. As such, I find we get characters that are very unidimensional and very much like my mum's overboiled cabbage nightmare that she imposed on the family throughout my childhood. I seriously need therapy to recover from the complete, overwhelming blandness. From the lack of texture aside from mush to the loss of colour and any distinguishable properties, the overboiled cabbage is the perfect metaphor to the let-me-pluck-a-cute-face-and-throw-it-into-my-drama approach. It removes the savour of everything it touches & it serves no real purpose in the meal except for leaving you with an overpowering after-taste of disappointment, the kind that says "I've suffered through this and I'm not even being rewarded for it."

I'm not saying Taecyeon would have been an amazing actor from the start. Let's be realistic. He would not have. I want him to be awesome, but nah. He would have been awkward at first. Yet he might have been less mediocre than some of his early works suggest. I still think very much that the writing is one of the crucial factors that allow non-actors to escape the overboiled cabbage horror. I find you can often tell when a role is written for an actor/actress, or for a makeshift cabbage.

I still haven't watched BLIND. Intend to but never got around to it. I've read mixed reviews, so I am still undecided. What's your take on it?

I laughed so much at your cabbage metaphor! 😂

Talking for myself I have been a fan of Taek since Dream High 2011. I was completely smitten with him and hated that he ended up the second lead, but LOVED his little scene with Park Eun Bin in the end.

Who Are You 2013 was the second time I watched him and still loved him.

What I'm trying to say is that I have always loved his roles and he has succeeded to make me root for him every single time, without knowing anything about his idol career.

So he was never that cabbage horror to me. BUT I did know that he isn't a great actor yet, and not everyone loved his acting as much as I did. It has been with a heart filled with pride that I have watched him getting better and better every year!

I loved Blind very much. All I can say is that if you are looking for justice and and the good always beating evil don't start Blind. Watch it if you are ready for a dark revenge story and amazing characterization. I loved that Taec's character is a very very ordinary man, and it was the first time I truly enjoyed Ha Suk Jin's acting.

I discovered him in Let’s Fight Ghost and I was not disappointed despite his character being a little unidimensional. He’s never felt like a bad actor to me but I appreciate he’s got much better. Definitely not a cabbage boy anymore!

HA love the boiled cabbage analogy and haven’t we seen many an idol who was not ready for prime time? (Also often referred to on DB as a potted plant as they offer all the pizazz of a philodendron in a pot.)

Wait, no meta hyperlink for "Let's go home/to our house"?)))

This was really fun, tho I had to FF a lot in Ep2 due to my weak tolerance for excessive cringe. But mad respect for actors, esp Taec, for going all out with it anyway. Vampire/supernatural squad are a hoot (cat spirit, bwahaha!), humor is mostly nice (telling pranking ghosts off since he's no human lol! and ramen drunkenness!), retro suits fashion show was A+, campy CGI didn't stick out the wrong way (all the flying!) and I really felt ML's anguish, poor guy is so unlucky! Btw, isn't it a discrimination to say that since vampires nave no human-like physical reactions to being in love they can't have such feelings at all? He seemed pretty serious about his first love, lack of a fluttering heart notwithstanding. I do wonder why couldn't he just fall in love with some vampire lady and solve his problem this way, but alas, bad romantic karma is a real bitch and can happen to the best of us. Now the real question is whether FL is The One he's been waiting for or we're in it for a genre trope defying twist later on? I've seen from cast list that there is going to be some confusion over the matter...

Now for the not so great parts - FL being THIS close to your typical insufferable romcom Candy gives me eyeroll. Does she have to screech so much? Or open random coffins and then act like it's not a super rude thing to do? Plus this whole tropey "poor girl's misfortune galore" was AWFUL. I mean, I expected tried tropes here, but this was a little too much for me. Hope now that she knows his true nature - and has a nice house to live in - she calms down significantly cause I'm not gonna torture my poor ears with the next HJE even for cutie Taec with fake fangs. Reverse bite was fun though. Creative way to bind a man to you. How far the connection goes, I wonder? Also some "funny" scenes/dialogues were over the top. That one vampire minion obsessed with looks is totally overdoing it, even actor's charisma can't save the poor writing. I do feel sorry that 20th century flashbacks were so scarce, they were cool. Re-open the club, maybe? That's the business that never goes out of fashion and ML already has experience in the field, so why not? Oh, and SML can go and donate himself to science - I don't get what's the deal with him nor do I care, honestly.

You're welcome))) For the context - "my house" = "our house" in Korean, and these words were used in Ep2 final line. Subs went with "my home", but that's pretty much the same thing.

Doubly funny since the lead actress in MV kinda looks like FL here, I totally forgot about that lol. Maybe intentional?

I like that they aren't another fated couple meeting coincidentally but share a real connection. Better both are aware of it so no need to wait for them to learn about it.

It might be just me but too good to be true second leads turn out to be obsessive or harbouring deep secrets. But I won't jump the gun. Time will tell if Do, -sik is really a good guy or not.

I am enjoying the hilarious moments. Taecyeon is doing a good job at making those moments feel real and not forced. Can't the cohabitation start already?

👏👏👏👏👏 Well done solstices, I think even Taecyeon would be chuffed by your clever word play.
Since TOTNT has finished there has been a noticeable gap for light hearted hijinks and I think this show might help fill that void.
I really enjoyed these episodes, it was just plain fun.
We have another feisty, female lead which is great to see and I like the contrast between the two leads.
Like others have expressed, 16 episodes may be too long but so far it's entertaining and that's all I'm looking for.
It also helps that Taecyeon looks very dapper in a suit, he is giving Junho a run for his money.

I got suspicious vibes from our second male lead, Do-shik. The hint of an illness also seems important. The first episode mentioned humans craving vampire blood for its powers. Perhaps this includes vampiric healing abilities. It's probably too soon to make such predictions, but I can't help but imagine the second lead desiring our male lead's blood at some point.

As others have already written, I do wonder how the writers will be able to keep the story compelling and interesting for fourteen more episodes.

I personally think the first two episodes were okay, but Taecyeon is doing a good job with the comedy. :)

I am getting preemptive suspicious vibes from Do-shik. So far, he has not done anything that is suspicious, which is precisely why I am very suspicious of him.

Interesting theory. Perhaps, this is precisely what will keep the story compelling. It seems so far that our dandy vampire has an easy solution, which is namely sticking to the FL. Perhaps, she is the reincarnation of his long lost love, or perhaps her nursing training prepared her for the unlikely event of finding a vampire coffin in your basement. Who knows? Those nursing schools are extraordinary nowadays!

I'm also curious about Cat-man. Why does he know so much, and why did he want to help Woo-hyul? I am, he might be a friendly cat, but we all know cats are bastards by nature, so is he playing a long game we don't know about?

Finally, what happened to In-hae's dad? Why has he gone missing? Is he part of a more complex plot we don't know about? Why hasn't he ensured his children would know about the manor and the promise their ancestor made? Did he even know about the promise or has it been lost generations ago?

I'm going through the comments (again) just to quote my own comment to my own face:

So, I will be waiting a few weeks before binge-watching 4 or 6 episodes in one evening and rocking a charming zombie face on the next morning.

We said we'd wait a few WEEKS. We clearly said weeks. What happened? Why have I already watched the first 2 episodes? Why? Why? Why? And more importantly, where is my self-discipline?!

I agree with @redfox that the stranded vampire in a new, modern world did feel a little forced. For those familiar with Live Up To Your Name, Joseon acupuncture expert Heo Im does manage to navigate his way through modern day's Seoul. Admittedly, he gets temporarily confused and assumes that ambulances are free taxis, but he can decrypt the Korean signs and find architectural elements to use as reference points. He is taken aback by modern civilisation, and I would expect an early 20th century vampire to be too. However, Woo-hyul has seen early 1920s cars, he's seen the world evolve as his life spans across several centuries (even if we exclude the nearly 100 years he spent as a fangful sleeping beauty in a coffin). Why is he so lost? Don't get me wrong, I have no sense of orientation and have been known to use sat nav devices to navigate my way in a single street (I'd love to come up with one convincing argument to my defence but the truth is that spatial orientation and myself have been respectful enemies my entire life). But Woo-hyul is not me. Surely, being his age, he can tell east from west...? I guess after a few centuries roaming around and stuffing yourself with garlic in direct sunlight, you develop a vague sense of orientation (and questionably bad breath).

That being said, the delightful hissing and little bunny hops trying to unlock his weak vampire abilities after a 100-year-long nap, were hilarious. And, it felt to me that it would have appeared a lot more forced in the hands of someone else. On paper, I'd have rolled my eyes and been annoyed at the scene. But, fair play to Taecyeon, his desperate and confused facial expressions did sell the deal for me. It also explains why we do seem to see his fangs appear when he first meets In-hae. That must have been the last straw depleting his vampiric energy.

Also having watched so many copy-paste drunken scenes, being drunk on ramyeon so a stroke of genius. Yes, writer-nim, what a fun idea!

The house, as everyone mentions, is intriguing. @jls943, @lixie, @elinor I join your bemused surprise: Why is everything in the house still in good working and relatively clean condition? If I don't vacuum at least once a week, my bedroom looks like that Aragog's cave in Harry Potter. Who's cleaning and maintaining all of it, and more importantly, can they come and do my home too?

I took it that Seoul Station and the statue of Admiral Lee Sun Shin were what finally gave him something to orient from but the statue may not be that old. A lot of Seoul was destroyed during the war which he completely slept through. Cheonggyecheon stream would just have been a little creek. It was a little annoying but still interesting to have to run through that much thought process while watching him find his way home!

So far me likes it.

This was funnier than I thought it would be, and while I have absolutely no idea about Taecyeon (I understand he is a popular idol and belongs to the same group as Junho, but I don't follow K-pop at all), I admit he has great screen presence. I absolutely love the female lead. She looks older than she is and oozes confidence.

That bite! It was so novel that I seriously doubled over and then some. I loved the part where he describes how hard it was for him in the coffin....'you are not human?' says the ghost. hahahahahaha!

That house though, how is she able to sleep, it's so creepy, not to mention dusty and windy. Also, how come his beautiful white suit did not have any disintegration for 100 years that he was in? Ah, I know logic needs to take a back seat.

I love the bite connection. Is she the past lover? Let's see where this goes.

I'm not into vampires so I was thinking of giving Heartbeat a pass, but I was curious if it was funny so I gave episode 1 a go. More than 12 hours later, I was at episode 12. :p I'm not sure what kept my eyes glued, Taecyeon is funny hamming it up (in ep. 1 I was laughing in the scenes where he was trying to prove he was a vampire), Won Ji-An is shaping up to be someone to watch out for based on this drama.

I liked that when they were demonstrating how poor In Hae was, she was squeezing the last drop from her sample-sized skincare-not using high-end brands. I also think that the PPL is minimal on the show (the obvious ones to me are the noodles and Grandmother's Tteokbokki)?
