Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 19-25, 2023
by DB Staff
Well, we knew King the Land and See You in My 19th Life were going to soar, but 9.6% (already!) for King the Land is impressive, and 19th Life’s rise wasn’t so shabby either. But what’s really impressive is Revenant — double digits right out of the gate! Meanwhile, new makjang on the block Durian’s Affair also had a decent premiere, along with the accounting firm thriller Numbers. It’s a wild weekend for dramas, that’s for sure.

I don't want to count my chicks but I'm glad for ENA this week. More so towards Happiness Battle as it is gathering numbers as its runs. The drama is good even though I do not know what it is doing or where it is going to.
So King The Land gets the high ratings against SYIM19L.
I learnt Revenant raked in the numbers but I didn't expect it to this extent. Wow! Just, wow!

Lies Hidden in My Garden is doing well too, and I liked the premiere week, so there's hope for ENA.

Not surprised...Revenant is led by two Baeksang award actors and a script writer known for her past horror/mystery/thriller dramas. Plus, it utilise Korean history/culture/folktales.

As last week I'm surprised by the high ratings for King.
It seems that it is not only me who is in the mood for some mindless romcom and specific humour. 😁😁

I'm absolutely delighted to see two rom-coms getting such good ratings right out of the gate!

I don't consider See You in My 19th Life a rom-com. The plot is pretty heavy, and after the initial comedy of a nine-year-old acting like an adult, the genre is more fantasy romance drama.

I’ll SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE should be doing better than this.
KING THE LAND is getting the love simply because it is a decent romcom and is something that has been sorely missing for a while.
The midpoint of a weekender sometimes droops a bit in ratings and this seems to have happened for THE REAL HAS COME.
REVENANT is a real surprise.

Here I was thinking that 2023 was the year of revenge, but now the relatively high ratings for King the Land and See You in my 19th Life show Korean viewers' inexhaustible hunger for hotel dramas.

I have never been in such opulent hotels.
Maybe that is the pull to the viewers.

Random fact about the hotel lobby (not sure if they're using different locations/sets for other hotel scenes) featured in King the Land: It's the Parnus Hotel Jeju (formally the Hyatt Regency Jeju). It was designed by John C. Portman, Jr., who is most famous for his stunning atrium designs, and as soon as I saw the hotel's atrium and elevators, I recognized his work! I've stayed at a few of his hotels (not in any VIP suite, of course), and if you've watched Disney's Loki series, then you've seen another one of his designs used as the TVA headquarters.

Wow, I had no idea--I knew the Peachtree complex in Atlanta, but the fact that he also designed in Jeju Island is pretty amazing--its a small prestige architect world!

Yes! I'm mostly familiar with his work in Atlanta, too, so I geeked out a little bit when I recognized his work in King the Land.

Not just any old hotel dramas...hotel dramas in which younger men with distant/unknown/dead mothers are dissatisfied with the way that older, sharp-tongued, defensive women are running said hotels. These hotels also need to have some connection to the aforementioned mothers.
These men's fathers must be strident and overbearing, and must be playing some sort of manipulative game with their son's emotions.
The female leads must also have some sort of childlike openness to the world that allows the viewers to imagine that the dramatic narrative going on around the characters can be viewed from their same "distance," that is, as an always, ongoing meta-narrative about what it means to be in a hotel, making decisions about running a hotel, or being in love.
Ideally, there's also comic relief, but that appears to be optional.
Inexhaustible, the hunger for such dramas!

Taking advantage of this pent-up viewer demand, I have an original concept for a drama that I'm going to shop around, striking while the hotel iron is hot. Its called "Reincarnated King of the Nineteenth Land." It involves a poor young man with a nice smile with vivid memories of past lives whose Moms keep traumatically dying in his many childhoods, who then gets into a love triangle with 2 rich female hoteliers, one of whom is his eternal love, the other who keeps trying to ram her rival with a white truck.
I could go into more details, including the sentimental and at times laugh-filled bromances, the mistily filmed heart fluttering scenes of bike rides, stumble catches, and falling cherry blossoms at grave sites, but I don't want anyone stealing my idea!

Don't forget the obligatory shower scenes of contemplation/anger/frustration for the ML and of course the requirement for a tailor on perpetual standby for filming to nip tuck in at all times. And don't forget the fan assistant who must be around as well to blow air on the FL's hair when she is in awe of the ML's appearance or whenever we need to be in awe of either of them really.

Every year is the year for revenge in dramaland. It's the main dish. The basic side offers are stalking and first loves. Hotel might be the flavor for this year!

I watched E01 of King the Land and was struck by the similarities to The Heirs (2013, Park Shin-hye, Lee Min-ho, Kim Woo-bin).

I wonder how far REVENANT can go, it's been a while for a dark ghost drama to do this well, let alone on national TV. Absolutely agree with @oldawyer that 19th LIFE should've been higher, it's really engaging so far, even with a sudden introduction of mysterious new characters that I honestly find very meh...

I am really happy to see the two dramas I am watching live doing so well I am hoping 19th Life gets into double digits next week and climbs to high teens before it ends. I am hopeful we will see King get to at least 12% during its run and then maintain it for the duration. King has a lot riding on its success and needs to make up for the past low ratings of even popular rom coms.

Well I expected higher ratings for See You In My 19th Life. I haven't watched the drama yet but from edits and the main actors i can tell it's really good and deserves better. Hope to see higher ratings in next episodes
