Would You Rather #15

In dramaland, leading ladies often find themselves torn between the love of two equally attractive men — a choice none of us would want to make! But what if you did have to pick between the frustrating lawyer and the adorkable police officer? In this weekly feature, we ask you to make the difficult decisions — and we aren’t limiting our options to dreamy oppas.

Vote via the poll and feel free to use the comments to explain exactly how you were able to choose! So, Beanies:

WOULD YOU RATHER #14 RESULTS

To be honest, the results from last week’s poll do not surprise me. I suspected the transforming cat-man would appeal to a niche subgroup of Beanies, and it turns out that group accounts for 59 out of 205 voters. It was still hilariously fun to see how this choice played out in the comments, though, because you all had some amusing theories on what it would be like to live with a transforming cat — and why that life is so not for you.

The most surprising thing to come from this poll was how many of you self-proclaimed cat lovers chose the fox over the feline, but it seems cat lovers are the most aware of their pets’ flaws — and why they would absolutely not translate well to a human housemate. @bbstl has a cat with a strong personality that’s more fearsome than a gumiho, and @nefret’s cat likes to stick its bum in its owner’s face. Yeahhhh… as funny as that is to imagine, I certainly don’t want to live with someone who insists on putting his rear end in my face whenever I want to relax and binge watch some K-dramas.

Even if we chose to ignore the more peculiar feline behaviors that would make sharing a home with cat-turned-human awkward (at best), there is still the creepiness factor to acknowledge. @jls943 asked a very important question: what happens if you go to sleep with your cat, and wake up and unexpectedly find out he’s turned into a man. Then again, if the man in question was attractive… Nah, still probably not worth it — especially if he still possesses the personality of a cat. As @darwi pointed out, house cats tend to be “pampered,” so a man who’s lived his life as a cat probably won’t pull his weight with the chores. Meanwhile — really and truly — the only downside to living with a gumiho is having to keep an eye out on your liver. But who needs a liver when dramaland has taught us how attractive gumihos can be?

This week is another situation in which I've never seen either drama, so I'm working from the scenarios as presented only. That said, this was a really hard choice for me. I'm a very empathetic person, to the point that I really have to watch out for the shows and movies I watch and books I read, because they can have a really lasting effect on me. Sometimes I get physically ill when I read accounts of tragedies or of people doing horrific things. I think that reading peoples' memories would be such a heavy ability to bear. But on the other hand - it's sort of more me? Despite it being difficult, my empathy isn't something I would trade away, and it might be such a gift to be able to know how people arrived at tough decisions or why they took actions that don't make sense on the surface. Super strength is a delightfully uncomplicated superpower, but I think I might just be complicated.

Possess super strength is clearly more practical in my daily life. In the drama, she learnt to control it, so it means I wouldn't break everything around me. I have no need to read memories of people.

In both scenarios, I'll be helping people with either choices. Well, I voted for reading people's memories cause I believe I'll be able to help them more, in a much fulfilling capacity than having super strength.

As a very emphatic individual, with my words many a times called that of a therapist, I believe I'll be able to help people heal/process better from hurt/lingering feelings(not necessarily romantic) if i find such in their memories. Of course, I'll still need to ask insightful questions, but I'll get to see the reasons for those questions play out myself. And then, be able to help people at the very core of where they're hurting. Walking them through their hurt won't be a walk in the park, it'll be a hand-in-hand laser-focused journey.

Your explanation got me wondering are you an infj/ enfj? I'm an infj myself & have the same line of thoughts. We're often called the therapist type😅

Knowledge is power. The ability to read another's memories can give you a useful experience insight on a person's strengths and weaknesses, loves and hates, hopes and fears, and character and flaws. Even if you are not shy or introverted, communication can be difficult if a person has put up barriers. How many arguments include the phrase "I can't read your mind" when the other person thinks you should know them better.

I prefer super strength. Then when needed, I can carry both my twin girls at once 🙂
(And it's handy when bringing shopping home. 😁)

Reading memories of other people feels like a huge intrusion of their privacy. Plus not all memories are pleasant.
On the other hand, I would appreciate this ability when my grandma's mind was leaving us - I would be able to know more about her past... and maybe reconnect and keep my grandma a bit longer in our world by sharing those memories.

I am curious about the why and way of how things happen. Sociology and Psychiatry were two of my faves in Nursing school so I think reading peoples' minds would help me understand the whys of the world and how things happen or come to be, even though it could be a can of worms also to know things you really didn't need to know or realize. I can always ask for help on opening jars lids etc. so super strength isn't so necessary for me. But, if you could see what Einstein or some other super smart person was thinking, would you even be able to understand it all?

I trip over thin air when I'm not paying attention and my spatial awareness is really low, so adding super strength to that would be the literal human equivalent of setting a bull loose in a china shop.
I'm in favour of reading people's memories...as long as I can control when I read them. If it's a Kiss Sixth Sense situation, then I can live happily as long as people don't come anywhere near my lips. If the memory reading happened through any type of touch, I suppose I'd get comfortable with gloves...think of all the pretty lace I could wear in summer!

Super strength obviously! That would definitely help me get a job, something my college degree hasn't done yet. LOL

I mean, what am I going to do with someone else's memories? Plus, that's invasion of privacy, right? It's not the same as hearing someone's thoughts by accident, you're like "yay, I'm going to dig into someone's traumatic past" (yeah, I haven't watched Memorist).
Anyway, it doesn't feel right and I think it's useless for me.

I think the super strength would be more useful than anything else we have in our curriculum. LOL
And I don't think other superpowers would be that helpful either, unless we do illegal stuff. 😂
Something I'm really considering rn LOL. jk

No, fight the urge! Stay (at least ordinary) strong and persevere! I'm no straight-arrow, but illegal stuff would definitely help to further the job-search cause! 😂

I am a person who experiences acute second hand embarrassment on a fairly regular basis--whether watching fictional or real-life people do cringey things--so I would never, ever want to be able to read people's memories.

Super strength would be fun, especially in scenarios like one that recently happened to me at the gym, where an older gentleman decided it was his obligation to teach me how to use the weight machines and give me fitness tips even though I used to be a personal trainer, am in better shape than he is, and didn't ask for help. I was very nice to him, though, because he meant well. But it would absolutely be so much better to just be like "Let me finish this set first," up the weight to the maximum setting, and let him figure out on his own that help is not needed.

Same for me with the second hand embarrassment! Absolute no-no.

While reading someone's memories would certainly be helpful in gaining a greater understanding of the person and their motivations, I think I'd only be comfortable with that it ability if it was an "on-demand' scenario, and only with the person involved's consent. It feels like an invasion of privacy otherwise. Then I started thinking how few people I would grant the ability to read my memories and even then I would want to control which memories were shared, so it's superhuman strength for me! After carrying my grandson up & down the stairs about a dozen times yesterday I could really use it!

I think reading people's memories is the more interesting choice. Especially if you read an older person's memories who is losing their memories. And if you want to go the criminal avenue, you could see people's passwords & account information.

Definitely possess super strength. I’m not one to indulge in other people’s traumatic memories.

Super strength for me too.

First thing that came to my mind was bringing groceries home. I don't drive and groceries get heavy while commuting and walking. And it would be great to use that gift to also help people move things.

While reading people's memories can help me understand them better, I'd feel weird about intruding. And I don't work in law enforcement where they would be helpful to catch criminals. But even that is only somewhat helpful since I don't think "I saw his memories" can be entered into evidence.

Option 1 is currently VERY tempting... but for all the wrong reasons. I'm afraid it'll end with me doing a lot of stuff which can be hardly considered good or heroic... And if it leads to divine punishment like in drama, then I'm not interested. Option 2 sounds rather traumatizing for the same reasons. It's already hard enough to avoid excessive negativity as it is. So nope, neither. Sorry, Min-Min, you've gotta be someone else's damsel in distress)))

What show is reading the memories from? I have only seen shows about reading the thoughts. While practical is obviously the superpower, reading the memories can be painful/good too. I mean so many times we retain only our side of the story from the memories. This will give the complete picture, rather than only one side of the story.

But still I will choose superpower thing. I cannot handle my own memories well, let alone others. So the memory thing is not for me.

It was Memorist : Dong Baek has an extraordinary ability. He can peer into the memories of whoever he touches.

My reason for wanting strength is more along practical lines. Since my father passed away, there is no man in the house and there are times when the strength factor comes into play. I could really use extra strength when trying to haul in a 40 count package of bottled water or trying to open a pickle jar. My mom is almost 70 and loves her pickles so I have to wrestle with the pickle jar, sometimes for several minutes. So far the pickle jar has NOT won, but there have been some close calls. Fighting crime and protecting the weak? Oh yeah, I'd love to do those too. But sometimes a woman just wants to be able to open a pickle jar for her mother without it turning into a free-for-all wrestling match.

I have small hands which make jar opening really difficult. My parents would open them for me when I lived with them.

I highly recommend the white Kuhn Rikon jar opener. Prior to that, in those moments of jar opening despair, I would be like "ugh, maybe I should get married so I can have someone open my jars".

I haven't had truly super strength, but until pretty recently I had exceptional strength for my size/build/gender, so been there, done that and I'm ready for something new. I'm up for the challenge of finding ways to make money, amuse myself, and perform dazzling party tricks by reading memories. If the unpleasant ones get to be too much, I'll find some way to cope. After all, Yoo Seung-ho will be around to provide guidance and help, right?

I wasn't here for the previous poll but I'm Team Cat all the way, despite that fact that one of mine likes to sprawl out on the bed on his back, airing out his nethers. A man can be trained persuaded out of that behavior, and maybe the training would stick when he turns back into a cat.

It's so funny how things people can do with language are represented as super powers. Did you know that you can read people's minds if you both agree to use one weird trick? We're doing it *right now*! Of course we can read people's memories. Though I guess by the same token we all have super strength, so maybe what I'm thinking here makes no sense. But! You could read my mind while I did it!

The only kind of superpower I’d want would be one where I’d have control over when and where I deploy it. So yes to super-strength, no to reading people’s memories upon skin-to-skin contact. I can’t imagine enjoying a makeout session while “hearing” my partner remember a past girlfriend—or something even more mood-killing!

If I could have any superpower, I’d choose being a hyperpolyglot: having the ability to master multiple languages. I love the idea of traveling anywhere in the world and being able to communicate with people in their native tongue. Or watching movies and tv in other languages and catching all the nuances…without having to wait for subtitles! But I guess it doesn’t count as a superpower, since there are actually people with this ability—some of whom became fluent in over 50 different languages!
