Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (May 20, 2023)
by DB Staff
So, what are we all watching this week?
What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: This continues to be so fun! I love the bros, but honestly Kim So-yeon is stealing the show for me. The character that seemed a bit one-note in Week 1 is actually much more layered and interesting and I love everything about her wild, out of the box ways.
Oh! Young-shim: Hah, this is just the wacky old school drama I thought it would be, and I can’t get enough of the sound effects and just hyperbolic nature of the storytelling. But what I really love is Lee Jae-min (he’s one of the rookies I’m rooting for these days). Bring on the SLS! It’s been a while since I wept in agony with a second male lead.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: I’m not sure I care about the plot of this show at all, but I’m not sure I care about not caring, either. I could watch episodes on episodes of just Yeon and Rang bickering, our foxes babysitting, blindfolded swordfights, and the like and be perfectly content! Plus, we’ve got a trio of old friends who fell apart (on top of the brothers with a turbulent past!), which might be my ultimate catnip. So okay, I guess I care a little about the plot — just not how it relates (or doesn’t) to Season 1.

The Good Bad Mother: Young-soon stresses me. All I can think of while watching her “tough love” scenes with Kang-ho is, “Get him away from her!!” No form of abuse can be justified with love, I’m sorry.
Doctor Cha: Dr. Cha needs to divorce her husband stat! And I like me a good McDreamy, but for some reason, I don’t want a romance between Cha and Dr. Roy.
Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: This is my happy place every week, and I’m not here for the plot. I’m quite satisfied with the chaos, the bromance, and the eccentricity of Kim So-yeon’s character. PS: Does anyone know the criteria for enrollment into the Fox daycare?

Finland Papa: This was a sweet little show that I think will be perfect for a Christmas rewatch. (Actually, why wasn’t it released around Christmas?) My favorite aspects of this drama were the colors and camera angles, but I also loved the fairy tale-ish aspect of the story. I was hoping to see more of the reunion between the leads but I understand why they didn’t stretch it out any longer. Anyway, pretty to look at and makes me feel warm and fuzzy? Yes, please! More of that.

Just watched HE IS PSYCHOMETRIC (a.k.a. THAT PSYCHOMETRIC GUY). In their astute and insightful series review, Saya pretty much summed up my feelings about the show: “All the elements to make a memorable, nail-biting drama were there, but it fell just a little short in its overall execution, like a soup that needs just a bit more salt.” I’d extend the cooking simile even further: the ingredients in the soup were in the wrong proportions—too much of this, not enough of that—so that the flavor became muddled.
As happens far too often in dramaland, the show lost its way after some really enjoyable early episodes. I wish they had spent more time exploring An’s increasing mastery of his psychometric skills, instead of abandoning this thread to focus on Sung-Mo and his not especially scary Psycho Dad. But I did love the lead couple—both individually and through the dynamics of their developing relationship. I would have loved to see more of the adorable secondary couple. (I could have spent an entire episode just watching An’s dorky friend Dae-Bong playing with the kids!)
I finally took the plunge on a VPN and am just beginning to explore what shows I will now be able to watch that up until now have been inaccessible to me. I will probably add a subscription to Disney+ as well. So many dramas, so little time…

I need to gather stamina to power through the ten final episodes of TILL THE END OF THE MOON and came upon ONCE WE GET MARRIED in search of fluff. There isn't a lot of fluff till the end but an endless stream of relationship toxicity and two insufferable second leads. But strangely, the thought of dropping it isn't on the agenda and I credit this to the leads, they are so comfortable with each other and the only redeemable quality of the drama. I overheard comments saying they headline the popular The Love You Give Me and this makes me very psyched to move on to that show next.
MEET YOURSELF (ep 4) is the perfect late night drama coming home from working the late shift and I'm so excited to spend four months slowly immersing myself in this drama.
GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION (Audio drama) continues to be amazing and the voice of Jin Guangyao sends shivers down my spine for all kinds of reasons.

I cried several times at the end of Chicago typewriter.
And I'm not a cryer. This drama really got me and gave me all the feels. It's beautiful, it has good music and excellent lead actors.
I was impressed by Kwak Shi Yang in the last eps. He was okay before, detestable character, but here he was good. And so handsome in his white shirt that I feel guilty to have this thoughts in these scenes.
We are enjoying Sell your haunted house. My friend is in need of romance, but I like the ghost of the week structure.
The discussion on the 10 best dramas made long for Seo In Guk, thus I started 38 Task Force and it's delightful.

Chicago Typewriter is such a lovely, powerful show - it's one of the ones that made me cry as well.

Oh! Youngsim: It's not quite what I was hoping for, but it's lighthearted and funny and charming enough that I'm going to keep watching.
She Was Pretty: I've never seen this drama, but it's been on my watchlist for ages, so I finally decided to start it. I assumed there would be a healthy dose of angst and drama given the era it came out of, but it's been decidedly devoid of that, which has been a pleasant surprise. I've finished up to ep 13, and it does feel like the story has taken a step back from really exploring what has made the female lead who she is, but everything else about it is so wonderful and romantic. I'm really loving it.
Shitsuren Meshi (Japanese): This drama is charming. Very slice of life and thoughtful with lots of yummy food and a really sweet, slow-blooming romance between two very likable characters. It's just very wholesome and comforting.
When the Camellia Blooms: I've started a third (fourth?) rewatch of this drama, because I can't help myself, lol.

I don't have a subscription to anything right now so I've been sampling free two-episode intros here and there. Nothing was really holding my attention, although I love the cinematography in Finland Papa, the way it just rests on settings and on Kim Bo-ra's expressions. But right now I'm getting into an oldie from 2002, Shoot for the Stars with a bunch of familiar faces (Leo Seo-jin, Jeon Do-yeon, Zo In-sung, Park Sang-myun...). I guess I like the classics.

Viki has a number of shows for free if you do not mind commercials. You can find them from the Viki homepage by clicking on the drop down menu for 'categories' - on the right hand side is a link for 'Watch Free'. Some of these are among the best dramas you can watch.

Oh yeah, despite my frequent complaints about their ads (the venmo one cranks up the volume), Viki is my current go-to kdrama site (long ago it was dramafever...). To my surprise, they have My Mister all free and I'm in the beginnings of yet another rewatch, but I'm trying to expand my horizons with a couple of other free shows that I haven't finished: Miss Hammurabi and Devilish Joy.

If you like romcoms some of the best are there from the past:
1% OF SOMETHING
MARRIAGE, NOT DATING
PLAYFUL KISS
OH MY VENUS
AND The C-drama YOU ARE MY GLORY
but the real surprise is the some of the all-time great Chinese Costume dramas are included:
UNTAMED
LOVE LIKE THE GALAXY
LOVE AND REDEMPTION
THE LIVES, THREE WORLDS, THE PILLOW BOOK
These are just a few of the ones available. You actually have a lot to choose from in the free section of Viki.

Thanks for the recs! I've seen those k-dramas (Marriage, Not Dating is a regular rewatch), but not the c-dramas. They also have Queen of Mystery all free, which is one of my favorites, but I couldn't get into season two and somehow that disappointment interferes with my enjoyment of the first season.
