The latest character teasers for ENA’s upcoming suspense thriller Lies Hidden in My Garden feature its leading ladies Kim Tae-hee (Hi Bye, Mama!) and Im Ji-yeon (The Glory). Based on the novel by author and filmmaker Kim Jin-young (The Other Child), the story begins when Moon Joo-ran (Kim Tae-hee) smells something suspicious in her yard, and things take a turn when she meets Chu Sang-eun (Im Ji-yeon).

Joo-ran’s teaser opens with her stating, “I remember that smell.” On the screen, the words “the perfect home, a happy family, that is what I thought” flash for a moment before abruptly cutting to Joo-ran digging in her backyard. The tension rises with Joo-ran watching and glancing at everything around her until the teaser ends with her laughing and crying in the middle of her garden.

Continuing with the dark and crazed tone, Sang-eun’s teaser starts with her cleaning up a broken picture frame of her wedding day with the words, “My husband died today.” Various scenes of Sang-eun looking and staring play in rapid succession, and then the teaser ends with her biting into a peach while dressed in funeral attire. She leaves the audience with a final, ominous question: “Have you ever killed someone, by any chance?”

The dichotomy depicted in these two teasers highlights the social and economic differences between the show’s leading ladies in subtle, interesting ways, yet clearly, both of them are slowly descending into madness as something sinister threatens to encroach upon their lives. It seems that both ladies are headed down a twisted path, and perhaps, they will find themselves entangled and immersed in each other’s life in ways they have never imagined. Fingers crossed the show delivers a spine-tingling mystery to blow the summer heat away.

Written by Ji Ah-ni and directed by Jung Ji-hyun (Twenty Five Twenty One), Lies Hidden in My Garden premieres June 19 on ENA following Oh! Young-shim in the Monday-Tuesday slot.
