[Drama chat] Your current top 10 dramas (2023 version)
by missvictrix
Believe it or not, it has already been a year since we started chatting about and sharing lists of our top 10 dramas of all time.
Since we’re all fanatics here, it seems like a worthy practice to visit this list-making task annually and see what’s changed (or not changed). What new titles came along and claimed a spot on your list? Was there an older drama you watched that stole your heart (and booted off a title from your list)? Did your tastes and preferences change, causing one of last year’s favorites to drop to #11?
It’s time to reassess, readdress, and dive into your current top 10 dramas.
Share your (new) current top 10 drama list below!
Let the chatting begin!

My list has only changed to include a few shows that I just recently watched:
1- My Mister
2- Reply 1988
3- Hospital Playlist S1
4- My Liberation Notes
5- Stranger S1
6- Misaeng
7- One Spring Night
8- Kill Me Heal Me
9- Healer
10- Secret Love Affair
When I look at my full rankings list, I find the top 30 are all really great dramas that I'd be happy to rewatch anytime. Well except for the serial killer ones where once is enough (looking at you Signal and Beyond Evil...)

Wow, is that a first mention of The school nurse files? I think some of the quirkier K dramas are an acquired taste but can be an interesting watch nevertheless.

It was one I watched more than once. I found some of the episodes really emotional! The plot was trippy, even psychedelic in some places, but the main source of emotion was the protagonist communicating with the dead.

I really, really loved that show and it was high on my list. It didn't make the final cut only because it was short and felt a little unfinished - oh, for the second season that now will never come! So I got more total enjoyment out of some others, but the good stuff per hour ratio was super-high for SNF.

ngl i've been lurking on this site ever since stumbling upon the recap of triple in 2010 but never made an account until now so i don't have anything to compare but this is my top 10! for the record this list is based off enjoyability, rewatch factor, or just quality - some have bad screenwriting but i really enjoyed watching them, or some that i only watched once but i thought the quality was amazing.
1. it's okay that's love - still wonderful to watch even almost 10 years later. when watching in 2014 i could never really understand the leniency towards the brother's violence but as i've grown up i've come to understand the character's emotions more deeply which is what truly solidifies it as my number one drama. i also really enjoy the main couple's relationship development and it has the most perfect OST album of all time
2. move to heaven
3. weak hero class one - originally i was debating between AADSIG and this because i think AADSIG has more meat in the script, but what won me over were the character interactions and the fact that whco has such an amazing premier episode that still (even after 10+ rewatches) manages to make me breathless with the pacing
4. reply 1988
5. she was pretty/kill me heal me
6. law school
7. racket boys
8. hello monster - this was one i only watched once but kyungsoo's acting and the brother's relationship really left an impression on me. though in all honesty, i don't imagine myself watching this again as i felt it dragged awfully in bits
9. devil judge - was the plot sort of held together by bromance scenes and a prayer? yes. did i still really enjoy watching the show because it hit a lot of my favorite tropes? also yes
10. biscuit teacher star candy - though it may not hold up to today's standards, it ranks 10 purely because this was the first kdrama i ever watched and it will always hold a place in my heart

i'm still on the fence about season two because of course i want more content - but if it follows the manhwa then we won't see the continuation of suho and sieun which is probably a dealbreaker for me because i'm not interested in a show about a fighting ring between school kids

Joining, just to find out if this will be 'the list' 5-10 years from now:
1. My Ahjussi - masterpiece! Might be my fave LSK drama.
2. Mother - hard watching this show coz of the topic, so my advice is wait to be in the right mood to tackle this drama.
3. Age of Youth 1&2 - great writing & character development especially for PEB, she never disappoints😊
4. The End of the World - when the pandemic started, I kept wishing that this drama was available to rewatch, but sadly no. Happiness might be a good substitute 😉
5. Dear My Friends - I'd wish for these type of friends when time comes...
6. Reply 1997 - SIG! Made me watch YouTube videos of their ost
7. Queen In-Hyun's Man - talk about chemistry & my 1st k-character crush, Kim Bong-Do 😍
8. A Wife's Credentials - great cinematography & assured directorial style
9. Life on Mars - fave JKH drama! Heard it might be better than the original UK version. If they could make this available in either Viki or Netflix, I'd watch it again & again. If they can also make Awl available, let's hope someone is reading DB for these numerous requests 😅
10. Life is Beautiful - fave weekend family drama. Ahead of its time in terms of characters, kudos to the writer!
I could think of so much more, so this was a hard list to make, but it made me realize the premium I put to well-written dramas that's hard to come by nowadays. Although the execution of kdramas are the best in terms of camerawork & cinematography, the current crop of kdramas are terribly lacking, this is just my opinion. Now, I find myself branching out to cdrama & jdrama for substantial content.
Although I have to thank DB for always being there if I need something to watch, based on recaps, comments & what you're watching, etc. This is still the most comprehensive site for kdrama & for that, I'll always be grateful for this community 😊❤️

‘ This is still the most comprehensive site for kdrama & for that, I'll always be grateful for this community 😊❤️’ 👈🏾 thank you for saying this as it’s a sentiment that all beanies share and it is why the staff and beanies are still going strong all these years later as people come and go. This is definitely the most knowledgeable, kind and funny Korean drama loving community.
Thanks for sharing your list and naming some of those that have disappeared as it could lead to it being picked up by a site like Viki as happened with Six flying dragons.

I'm not crazy then, to notice this thing...
Sometimes I don't even finish the drama when I know things are going downhill, I simply walk away. The days of completion is over since I have few hours to indulge in this form of relaxation 😅
I know I should be exercising or something, but I'm the type who doesn't do anything while watching coz I'm reading subtitles. Learning a new language has never been my strong point, so can't multi-task 🤣

Great K-dramas still exist but they're getting fewer and farther between, and they're also often not 'high profile' shows like in past years. The wait for the 'next great show' is longer and you're likely to miss it entirely of you don't check streaming service X.

If there has been a Kdrama booted off my Top (not necessary 10, haven't do any counting) list, it's A Gentleman's Diginity. The pacing was good, I love Kim Ha-neul, but its views on men vs women are quite dated now.

It's impossible for me to stay faithful to any sort of ranking, so this list is not numbered, but here are my current ten favorite dramas (which is subject to change on a moment's notice, lol):
*We Married as a Job (Japanese)
*The Secret Life of My Secretary
*A Little Thing Called First Love (Chinese)
*High School King of Savvy
*Shizuka Chan to Papa (Japanese)
*Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
*Fated to Love You (Korean)
*Deka Wanko (Japanese)
And that's...actually it, lol. There are definitely more dramas I've watched that I love, but I don't have two more that I would put in a top ten, so I'll just leave it at 8.

This is always evolving and changes depending on my mood, but here's a 2023 version, weighted more towards serious shows:
1) Six Flying Dragons - dark, uncompromising, heartbreaking, gorgeous
2) The Untamed (Chinese) - the show it felt like I had been secretly waiting for my entire life but never seen - dares to ask what might happen if men chose love over honor and the results are glorious
3) The Devil (Lucifer) - the most nuanced look at the nature of evil and the possibilities and costs of redemption that I've ever seen
4) Queen Seondeok - a great female protagonist and a great female antagonist, plus the world's most intriguing sociopath? Sign me up now
5) Beyond Evil - I could watch Shin Ha Kyun and Yeo Jin Goo on screen together forever, also great writing and direction
6) Forest of Secrets 1 & 2 - I could watch Cho Seung Woo and Bae Doo Na on screen together forever, also great writing and direction
7) Jumong - Epic historical melodrama is all the best ways
8) Giant - Epic contemporary melodrama in all the best ways
9) Tree with Deep Roots - Beginning and end were a bit rough, but the middle episodes are some of the best television I've ever seen
10) Healer/Coffee Prince - so I'm not primarily a romance person, but if you're going to make a couple the center of your story, do it like these two shows - the chemistry was on fire and both the fun and the serious moments landed.

The overall skill level of the actors in Giant was incredible - so many shows with huge casts have a big drop off between the leads and everyone else, but not this one. I also liked HJE here, and when your child actors include Yeo Jin Goo, Nam Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun you really can't go wrong.

Yes, these two shows are definitely at the top of my list - I love dramas that know how to drop set-ups in early episodes that pay off powerfully down the road, and that are fully emotionally engaged yet aren't afraid of morally messy characters and situations, and don't feel that every relationship has to be resolved neatly. Although I agree that the "scary" dogs were hilariously un-terrifying in both!

4. My Mister- such a healing drama even if it starts out super depressing but really well done
5. Signal -mysterious and super engaging; love the FL
6. New Life Begins (c-drama) fun, great woman empowerment story
7. Hospital Playlist 1/2

A Piece of Your Mind - a true healing drama in the sense that there is closure at the end of a painful journey)
All About Eve - a classic that ages well
Nirvana in Fire 1 & 2 - epic sagas that I think can only be produced by Mainland China
The Blood of Youth - never a dull moment
Stranger 1 & 2 - terrific writing, acting, and directing
My Mister - ripped my heart apart and put it back together

4 1% of Something
5 Witches’s Romance (favorite Park Seo Joon)
6 Reply 1997

I’m surprised no one mentioned What’s Wrong W/Secy Kim. It’s not my favorite, but seems very popular.

‘ I’m surprised no one mentioned What’s Wrong W/Secy Kim. It’s not my favorite, but seems very popular.’ 👈🏾 I thought the same, but that’s why a top twenty five is the easier option as lots of enjoyable dramas that have classic scenes or could be rewatched are not quite a cut above all others which is what the top ten forces you to acknowledge.

love this. i've been watching kdramas for about 6 months, but i've been going at it HARD lol. taking notes from other people's favorites, but i like romances!
1. the red sleeve (the longing between the 2 leads, perfectly scored, junho, the amazing cinematography, how i loved the female lead, ugh, i loved it so much)
2. doom at your service (gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous, the acting, the chemistry, i love park bo-young)
3. run on (just a total comfort romance, i loved the 2 leads so much, shin se-kyung is one of my faves, i love her in everything i've seen so far)
4. my roommate is a gumiho (just SO FUN. the entire cast is hilarious, and jang ki-yong's voice and face are so so perfect)
5. coffee prince (a 20 something gong yoo just being so gong yoo)
6. oh my venus (chemistry!!!!!)
7. weightlifting fairy kim bok-joo (2 cuties being cute together and captures that feeling of everything being open to you at that age)
8. shopaholic louis (compare seo in-guk here to seo in-guk in doom at your service, he's amazing and so beautiful)
9. my love from another star (female lead is HILARIOUS)
10. dali and the cocky prince (park gyu-young can do no wrong, she's the absolute best)
thanks for letting me share. i look forward to watching many more, thanks to your lists!

Sounds like you are on a proper mission. Looking forward to seeing next year’s list when you have watched even more. If you like romances look for the 2017 era as I have found them the most fun without dark murder themes. Those romances with slice of life elements tend to have more traumatic elements but are balanced well.

i also noticed that romances in the 2017 era and later, the mls do not have facial hair at all, which gives them a very clean look. korean makeup is no joke haha.

And Yup. DEFINITELY a gem of a year.
Circle
Tunnel
Liar and His Lover
Strongest Deliveryman
Forest of Secrets
School 2017
Prison Playbook
Just Between Lovers
I'm Not a Robot
Chief Kim
Fight For My Way
Defendant
All aired in 2017 according to MDL, and all scored at least an 8.5 with me. Four of those are on my top 10 list. That's nearly HALF!!
While You Were Sleeping
The Package
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
also aired in 2017, but didn't make the 8.5/10 cut for me.

Hehe While You Were Sleeping is still a really good drama, I think I just ended up with super high expectations since I LOVE LOVE LOVE some of LJS other dramas. I'd still say go for it, I think it got like an 8/10 for me which is still in my "would recommend to others" category haha :)

Thanks for sharing this list of gems.
I would campaign for The Package as it’s a slower watch than the usual dramas but if this style does work for you then, Would you like a cup of coffee, Twelve nights and I will come to you when the weather is nice are of a similar style. When the weather is nice has a number of darker trauma storylines included but the others are more everyday real life in their content. They are not all romance heavy but they do tell interesting stories with relatable characters and setting and scenery are important parts of the story too.

Yeah- I remember not disliking the Package, but also telling it had a kind of different vibe than other kdramas. It got a 6.5/10 for me, which is a little low but not enough that I'd consider it "not good". I'd be interested in if my thoughts would change on a rewatch

Maybe it's years that end in "7"? 2007 was also an amazing year for K-dramas, with Coffee Prince, Evasive Inquiry Agency, The Devil, Thank You, Time Between Dog & Wolf, Que Sera Sera, Dal Ja's Spring, The White Tower, Jumong, Capital Scandal, etc.

i LOVED red sleeve so much, all that yearning, the happiness found i those little moments, and yet the impossibility of finding deep long term contentment because he was the crown prince. i'm still deeply affected by it. my first kdrama was boys over flowers, but the kdrama that got me hooked? wwwsk (it was my second kdrama). and as you can see from my list, i loved MLFAS. the comedy between those 2. the WARDROBE that the fl had. the LOOKS. how beautiful is kim soo-hyun. i have it's ok not to be ok on my list, but i might expire because both leads are just too gorgeous.

Ha. It’s less that you’ll never like another Doctor…more sort of the case that there was that special something-something that made you engage strongly, watch again, and then, eventually, take a risk on a new actor/writer.

Haha Tenant was my first doctor and still my favorite :) I did like Capaldi quite a lot, but I wasn't as into the show overall by then so I haven't seen enough of him to overtake my love for Tenant.

I do think you can tell who's been watching shows for a long time based on how many older dramas are on a given list. I also continue to love many of the early shows I watched, as they were awesome enough to pull me fully into the world of Asian television.
