The tale of Ra Mi-ran’s life in The Good Bad Mother
by solstices
JTBC’s upcoming drama The Good Bad Mother has just released its first character teaser, delving into the life of our titular mother and offering a sympathetic glimpse into her arduous past. Through a montage, the teaser chronicles the life of Jin Young-soon — played by Ra Mi-ran (Dr. Park’s Clinic) — from adolescence to motherhood.
Having lost her family in a car accident at a young age, Young-soon persevered through sheer force of will, repeating “I am happy” to herself like a mantra. Living life as diligently as she could, Young-soon eventually received a proposal from the young owner of a pig farm, Choi Hae-shik. Played by Jo Jin-woong in his first dramaland appearance since Entourage, husband Hae-shik brought Young-soon lots of joy — but the world wasn’t as kind to the impoverished couple.
Blaming her poverty and her lack of education for the misfortune that befell her, Young-soon resolved to raise her son Kang-ho into a brilliant prosecutor. Wanting Kang-ho to live confidently without having to suffer from injustice, Young-soon raised her son with an iron fist, hoping that a strict upbringing would lead Kang-ho to excel in his studies and reach greater heights.
When a grown up Kang-ho — played by Lee Do-hyun (The Glory) — becomes a prosecutor, Young-soon heaves a sigh of relief, thinking her work is finally done. She’s broken her cycle of poverty and misfortune; now her son can enjoy a life better than anything she could ever dream of. As a mother, all she wishes for is her son’s happiness.
But the universe has other plans for them. A devastating accident sends Kang-ho regressing all the way back to his childhood self, necessitating a mother’s care. Young-soon must step back into the shoes of her past self, becoming a “bad mother” once again for the sake of her precious child.
Helmed by PD Shim Na-yeon (Beyond Evil) and written by Bae Se-young (Life is Beautiful), The Good Bad Mother premieres on April 26.
