Kim Woo-bin becomes a dystopian Black Knight
by tccolb
New promos have arrived for Netflix’s upcoming dystopian sci-fi Black Knight, showcasing our masked hero Kim Woo-bin (Our Blues) in the newest poster and video teaser.
Set in a future where oxygen has become like gold, our protagonist is known simply as 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) and has the coveted but dangerous job of delivering the prized O2 tanks to people’s homes. But even among his fellows, 5-8 is considered a legend and the story will lead him to team up with the aspiring courier Kang Yoo-seok (Payback).
We then follow our protagonists as they fight for humanity’s last hope and face off against this world’s big bad Song Seung-heon (Voice 4), who wields great power as the Chungmyung chaebol group heir. But the bigger evil in my mind right now is whoever decided to hide Kim Woo-bin behind masks for most of the trailer – in addition to not yet featuring Esom (Taxi Driver).
Having said that, the teaser is still visually striking and opens on the dusty desert that has overtaken the landscape. We then follow 5-8 as he works, driving to pick up the precious shipments of oxygen and delivering the goods to their destination. Elsewhere, a badly injured Sa-wol (Kang Yoo-seok) is seen fighting for his life.
As 5-8 talks about his high-risk job, we get to see the different dangers that he faces day-to-day and how QR codes are used to verify both his identity and others’. We then jump to the other side of the social stratum, where Ryu-seok (Song Seung-heon) schemes from within his vast throne. The video teaser then closes as our hero begins the fight.
Written and directed by filmmaker Jo Eui-seok (Golden Slumber, Master), Netflix series Black Knight will be releasing next month on May 12.

@tccolb: You said it. That’s at least an evil on par. He made me cry a lot in the terrible - but Woobie was great in it - “Uncontrollably Fond”. I hope he doesn’t get sick and die in this.

The premise make me think of
1: What was that horrible (and obviously forgettable) show/movie where the air wasn't breathable
and it wasn't even Los Angeles smog?2: Ruler: Master of the Mask where water was scarce
and it wasn't even set in California in our drought. Let's just say -- it takes a lot to make me drop a Kim So-hyun show.So I pretty much just want to run away and hide until this is over.

There are quite a few with such premise, like Total Recall (both versions). Pretty much any sci-fi flick about cosmos that involves other planets/moons/asteroids/whatever, it's REALLY hard to find one that DOESN'T include a celestial body that's totally or at least largely unfit for earthly life. Or any life at all. Lack of atmosphere/breathable air is the most common problem among genre's tropes, with water/climate trouble being not-so-close runner up.

Is it me, or was it fast? I didn't really get much out of the teaser, though the narration was informative, I'm a visual depended person, I need to clearly see people's faces to figure out if it's my type of drama.

It looks interesting and completely new for a Kdrama. Now, Kdramas are not the best for Sci-Fi themes...

That's definitely a very cinematic trailer. Is it a short-term series or a film?
