Something suspicious in Kim Tae-hee’s House With a Yard

Clockwise: Kim Tae-ri, Im Ji-yeon, Choi Jae-rim, Kim Sung-oh

The main lineup has been confirmed for ENA’s new suspense-thriller House With a Yard, which stars Kim Tae-hee (Hi Bye, Mama!) in her drama comeback, along with Im Ji-yeon (The Glory), Kim Sung-oh (Unlock the Boss), and musical actor Choi Jae-rim (Green Mothers’ Club).

Based on a best-selling novel written by filmmaker Kim Jin-young (The Other Child), the title refers to the home of our protagonist Joo-ran (Kim Tae-hee). One day, she notices a suspicious smell (alas, it’s not Joo-won a skunk) in her backyard and this becomes the starting point of the story’s mystery, leading Joo-ran to see the growing cracks in her once unblemished life.

Im Ji-yeon’s character Sang-eun, on the other hand, is all too aware of the challenges in her life and has been feeling trapped by her limited options. Still, she doesn’t give up hope on finding a better life and she finally reaches a turning point when she meets Joo-ran.

Joo-ran’s husband is Jae-ho – played by Kim Sung-oh – who is described as a perfectionist and a skilled doctor. But unlike the increasingly worried Joo-ran, Jae-ho doesn’t seem bothered by the odd smell lingering in their yard and he clashes with his wife on the matter.

Rounding out the group, Choi Jae-rim plays Sang-eun’s husband, Yoon-beom, who works for a pharmaceutical company. He is also one of the causes (if not the main one) of Sang-eun’s trauma, as the character is described to be prone to violence and threats.

Directed by PD Jung Ji-hyun (Twenty Five Twenty One, Search Query: WWW) with scripts by Ji Ah-ni, ENA’s House With a Yard is slated to premiere this June.

So there's two ladies, one shady husband, one violent one and a rotting mystery... Sounds like a good old thriller. Can't wait)))

Reading the drama’s blurb, I thought this was a makjang thriller, but it's more of a modern Female Gothic story after researching the source novel because to both women, their house is no longer a safe haven, and they are somewhat cut off from the rest of the world. I found it interesting that the two female protagonists do not think highly of each other (I read that Kim Tae-hee’s character wrinkles her nose at Lim Ji-yeon’s poverty, while the latter dislikes the former’s vanity due to her sheltered lifestyle), but at the same time, they need each other to get out from their oppressive situations. I’m looking forward to Kim Tae-hee tapping more into her dark side and Lim Ji-yeon’s turn from a woman who has everything to a woman with nothing but her wits and survival skills, and also Kim Sung-oh’s portrayal of a gentlemanly husband with a murky side, unlike his in-your-face villain roles.

Did you see something that is Kim Sung-oh's iris? That got my attention faster than the skunk. It's beautiful☺️.

Yeah, his eyes look beautiful in that picture! I don't know if it's just the lighting or it's his real eye-colour, but I'm mesmerized.

It is real, I've seen him in many shows and his eyes look the same in all of them. Very pretty indeed.

The synopsis reads like every other mystery-thriller novel being sold at the thriller section of your local bookstore. Not inherently a bad thing if they execute it well. I at least have faith in the PD, if not the rookie writer.
