[Beanie Recs] Dramas about manhwa artists

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

I’m obsessed with W: Two Worlds and Extraordinary You, and I’m looking for other dramas that are about manhwa artists (or similar). I know the cross-over element is rare, but I really just love stories about artists that work in this medium. Any dramas you can think of? It can even be a side character!

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

Today's Webtoon started strong but really disappointed me. It does have some wonderful scenes in the protagonist's family manwha cafe, which I liked! Hence my disappointment with the totally weak ending. Sleeeeper Hit felt incomplete and in need of some of the explanatory additions of the Korean series, but at least they didn't totally ruin the ending.

The anime and live-action Japanese drama Erased is also about a manga artist. It's a sort of time-slip drama, and I really liked the way the artist's artwork changed because of his time travel. Hope that doesn't spoil things too much!

As far as manwha, I think it's tough to beat Extraordinary You. Hogu's Love is probably my best second runner-up because it also has a protagonist who gets into the comics business as an artist after growing up in a family that has a comic book store. Comics and comic book stores also feature in True Beauty, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and D.P. Though getting sucked into a book or being in a book is a cool idea, in some ways the real-life importance of fiction is better to me.

Today’s webtoon was good for this subject.

Flower Boys Next Door I don't remember well but I think the second male lead was a webtoon artist and the best friend of the FL was an sleep deprived editor.

I second Flower Boy Next Door. I almost never have SLS but Kim Ji Hoon did a number on me. And Kim Seul Gi was the scene stealer.

I believe there are a few Cdramas where people get sucked into books/mangas, and I know of at least 2 Jdramas where one of the leads is a manga artist.

I never had second male lead syndrome in FBND because I was completely in love with Enrique/Shi Yoon... BUT I liked Kim Ji Hoon a lot! One of the best SMLs I have found in Dramaland.

Flower Boy Next Door is my recommendation because it's one of my favorite dramas ever. A pair of the flower boys are trying to earn a life as manhwa artists. The other flower boy (ML) is a successful creator of videogames for mobile phones.

Other dramas where there was someone who was a manhwa artist: Just between Lovers (FL's best friend), Meow: Secret boy (FL). I liked them both.

The best friend in Just Between Lovers is the one I thought of too. They had such a great relationship!

Right off the top of my head, I can think of two:

HYDE, JEKYLL, ME - Hyun Bin’s alter-ego character, Robin, is a wildly popular manwha author.

JUST BETWEEN LOVERS/RAIN OR SHINE - The FL’s best friend (who uses a wheelchair) is a webtoon artist.

Also—in STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON, Bong Soon becomes a video game designer…does that count?

SCENT OF A WOMAN has a lovely side character who is a webtoon artist.

365 DAYS, REPEAT THE YEAR the female lead is a webtoon artist.

There is another one too which would be a spoiler 😄

Not a fantasy drama but more of a sitcom: the Sound of Your Heart featuring Lee Kwang-soo and Jung So-min is hilarious. It should still be on netlix.

The reboot version featuring Sunghoon and Yuri is fun enough, but doesn't live up to the original.

HOGU'S LOVE
The main character Hogu (Choi Woosik) is a webtoon artist. A manga library is also a significant setting in the drama and the female lead Dohee (UEE) is a fan of NANA.

Only tangentially related the Mangas, 'Melo Is My Nature' had a guy at a TV studio whose job was to read graphic novels in the hope of finding the next big series adaptation.

'Someday or One Day' and 'True Beauty' both had the young leads first bond over their shared love of Mangas.

Love is for Suckers has a side character, Park Ji-wan, who is a webtoon artist, but you didn't really get to see any of her work or the process involved. We know that it's very popular, to the extent that it is getting turned into a drama, and the title is great: "I Loved That Jerk!" It's also kind of sweet because her storyline is that she writes all these romances without actually knowing what it feels like herself, and she wants to be the main character in her own life for the first time.

Oh, another artist side character (I'm trying to remember) 'Backstreet Rookie' Han Dan Shik, the... um... dreadlock stoner?

Also the female lead in 'Meow The Secret Boy', Kim Sol-ah, had a side gig as a webtoon artist. We got to see her artwork.
