[Beanie Recs] Capers and heists

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

I’m looking for more caper/team heist sort of dramas — Mad Dog is one of my favorites, and Money Heist: Korea my least. Anything in between? I’m new to dramas but it’s my favorite sort of story.

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

Player (2018)
A solid and entertaining caper about a group of misfits pulling off a heist, its fun and easy to get into

Bad Guys (2011)
One of my favourite crime dramas, its about a group of criminals who hunt other criminals.

Squad 38 (2016)
about a team of investigators taking down tax evaders, the premise sounds boring but its actually funny and entertaining.

... and of Course Taxi driver

While they aren't exclusively caper shows, I adored that element in both Story of a Man and Healer. Also, while it isn't a heist show, the Korean version of Liar Game also very much has that feel and is tons of fun. 38 Task Force is solid as well.

Oh, it's been a long time since someone mentioned Story of a Man. That was one heck of a drama.

I have not watched a pure team heist k-drama but "Vincenzo" had some of it. I think he/she could give it a try.

There is a Korean version of the US show Leverage, I didn't watch it, so no idea if it's good or not.

Squad 38 was really good. SIG was so good in this role!

My daughter is a HUGE fan of the US Leverage, so we had to watch the K-version. We enjoyed it a lot! And got a few kicks out of the nods it gave to the US version.

REBEL,The Thief Who Stole The People.

Folktales and history mashup that worked. This is what a sageuk feels like when veterans aren’t sleep walking through their roles. I still listen to the timeless ost with the characters faces in my mind.

I think Two Weeks should somewhat count as caper even though he had no cape. But he had a noble mission of saving his daughter and getting justice.
City Hunter

one of my fave genres as well since I grew up with Zorro and im bummed about ruzzians giving Z the bad rap

MONEY FLOWER is a “long-con revenge” drama, in which Jang Hyuk executes an elaborate deception to take revenge on the chaebol family that killed his brother when they were children.

Some caper films to consider:

THIEVES (2012) - A gang of thieves try to steal diamond from casino in Macau. With Kim Yun-Seok, Kim Hye-Soo, Jun Ji-Hyun, Lee Jung-Jae, Kim Soo-Hyun, and Kim Hae-Sook.

THE SWINDLERS - (2017) - A group of con artists team up to get revenge on criminal boss. The star-studded cast features Hyun Bin, Yoo Ji-Tae, Bae Sung-Woo, Park Sung-Woong, and Nana.

PARASITE involves a family perpetrating an elaborate con, so I guess it counts, too.

Bad Guys - I really like this kdrama a lot. This is the first kdrama I saw PHJ in and wished he would go back to similar roles

Healer - this is my fave JCW drama to date. It has all the elements of a caper/heist.

Good Job - more comedic but still fit the caper and heist theme.

City Hunter - another vigilante drama. I dont remember much about this but Lee MinHo is in it.

Doctor Prisoner - it has elements of a caper but more in line with a revenge drama

Echoing everyone else about Squad 38. It's not easy to make a story about tax evasion and its karmic retribution fun, but there you have it.

I'm not sure Lookout count, but it definitely has caper-ish vibe going on. Though the story was a bit darker than Mad Dog.

I'm also going to recommend Leverage. It didn't do anything new, but it was an easy watch full of fun characters.

If you are willing to try a drama that put different twist on the usual caper theme, there is Buamdong Revenge Club with its group of ahjumma friends trying their luck on hands-on justice.

I second the Buamdong revenge club aka Avengers social club because it was quite funny in terms of the way they took revenge.

Caper films are my favorite genre. If Ocean's Eleven is the pinnacle, The Thieves was disappointing, although it is the most famous heist film because of its star-studded cast.

I loved The Grand Heist, a sageuk heist comedy starring Cha Tae-hyun and Oh Ji-ho, and The Con Artists starring Kim Woo-bin, Lee Hyun-woo, and Ko Chang-seok. Both were fun and smart.

My Fellow Citizens is a long con and there's even a heist of sorts (at least, there's a safe involved). And it's got the team.

A "caper" is defined as an activity or escapade, typically one that is illicit or ridiculous. In that vein, SPRING TURNS TO SPRING comes to mind. It is about stolen technology, body switching and Uhm Ji Won and Lee Yuri having fun in this sit-com.
