Oasis: Episodes 7-8
by Dramaddictally
This week is all entanglements and explanations as our leading men play every side to stay on top. With both our boys carrying out unethical schemes, there’s a thin line between criminal enterprises and legitimate work. In the background, our heroine continues to be genuine, intelligent, and likable — and maybe a little too good for this love triangle.
EPISODES 7-8
A complicated web of alliances develops this week but the main point is that Doo-hak has aspirations to move up in the world and get out of the crime business — and he succeeds, sort of. It begins when his boss, Kwang-tak, gets involved with some real estate developers and Doo-hak and his crew are sent to coerce residents to leave their land so it can be redeveloped.
Out of this event, two major things happen. First, Doo-hak is photographed leading the violence that forces the residents to leave. The kicker is that Cheol-woong is the one who sent the photographer to collect some dirt on Doo-hak. Cheol-woong then shows the photos to Jung-shin — another ploy to get her to turn away from Doo-hak and towards him.
Jung-shin, of course, is way too smart for his antics and understands what he’s doing. Still, she’s angry at Doo-hak for his involvement, and she tells them both to grow up. She then storms off, which, unfortunately, is about all the script is giving her to do these days.
The second major thing that comes out of the event is that Kwang-tak is offered the chance to get further involved in the real estate business. Here’s where it gets a little complicated. Man-ok and Choong-sung are the ones behind this new redevelopment project. So, it’s Man-ok that goes to see Kwang-tak and ask if he wants to be in charge of the construction — not only at the site they just cleared, but at all the new luxury developments they’re building. It’ll be worth big money, and Kwang-tak is willing to do anything to get this chance.
The catch is that Man-ok wants to frame Doo-hak as the mastermind behind the violent eviction of the residents. It’s not entirely clear why, though. At one point we hear that it was Cheol-woong who asked Man-ok to take down Doo-hak, but at the same time, Cheol-woong looks surprised by the insinuation that it was his idea.
In any case, Doo-hak is itching to break free from Kwang-tak anyway. So, when he finds out that Kwang-tak agreed to frame him, he uses it as an excuse to orchestrate a coup. The plan is to send Kwang-tak to jail so that Doo-hak can take over his national-level crime organization (meaning Doo-hak will be in charge of all the big-money real estate stuff). Doo-hak asks Cheol-woong — who’s now officially a prosecutor — to help him. Cheol-woong agrees, but says that if things go according to plan, it’s the end of the debt he owes Doo-hak.
And things do go according to plan, mostly. But at the end of the showdown at Kwang-tak’s house, Doo-hak gets stabbed in the stomach. Lucky for him, holding a rag over the wound is fine and he doesn’t need to go to the hospital. But it means he’s still on the scene when Jung-shin shows up. (Seriously, did Cheol-woong call her?) Jung-shin is tearful looking at a bloodied Doo-hak, and tells him that it’s really over now. Watching him get hurt is where she draws the line. She wishes him well and walks off crying.
While collecting documents after Kwang-tak’s arrest, Cheol-woong finds Man-ok’s business card and realizes that the KCIA has actually been backing this criminal organization. Just to put this into perspective: Man-ok and Choong-sung are still part of the KCIA and they’re simultaneously controlling the real estate projects (which they hired gangsters to carry out) and the prosecutor’s office (whose job is to arrest gangsters). They’re at the top, puppeteering all sides.
After the smoke clears, Doo-hak gets a meeting with Choong-sung and explains that he wants to take over the redevelopment project, promising to be loyal to his “master.” Choong-sung ultimately accepts Doo-hak but doesn’t trust him.
After the meeting, the strangest thing happens. Doo-hak calls Jung-shin over and says he quit the thug life and wants to be together. He’s thought about all the times he was down and how she was there for him, and he loves her. Crying and kissing ensues and the next thing you know Jung-shin is pushing Doo-hak’s wheelchair (because his stab wound is apparently worse than he thought) and then there’s more kissing.
I really thought this was a dream sequence because it all happens so fast and there seems to be a major jump in logic. First, it’s not a dream because Cheol-woong has obtained photos of the pair puckering up in public. Second, how can Doo-hak say he quit the crime business when he’s working for Choong-sung and Man-ok? They’re the biggest criminals around and the work he’ll have to do is probably not much different than before, even if it’s “legal” now. I’m guessing this is going to cause some trouble for our lovebirds not too far down the road.
Meanwhile, Choong-sung is wooing Yeo-jin by showing her all the land he’s cleared of poor residents to build luxury high rises. These two have gone from cozy to couple, and Choong-sung has even told Yeo-jin he acknowledges Cheol-woong as his son. Yeo-jin is so happy, she can’t wait to introduce him and Cheol-woong to each other. (Never mind that she hasn’t told Cheol-woong this guy is his fake dad.)
When the introduction is finally underway, Cheol-woong realizes that he already knows who Choong-sung is: the boss of the man who tortured him and forced him to be an informant. Man-ok arrives and kneels in front of Cheol-woong, apologizing and saying that Choong-sung had no knowledge of what was happening.
As Man-ok tries to take all the blame, Choong-sung makes it seem like it was all a big accident, saying that sometimes the wrong person gets sacrificed for no reason. (This is also untrue, since Cheol-woong was selected in order to harm his father, Young-shik.) Cheol-woong goes from afraid to enraged and says he can’t accept his mother marrying Choong-sung. He gives Yeo-jin a choice, “It’s these monsters or me.”
The drama picked up the pace a little this week but after all those long, drawn-out explanations of covert plans to take down the gang leader, I think we could have spent a little more time on the reconciliation between Doo-hak and Jung-shin. The fact that we’re only halfway through and they’re already together means only one thing: we’re going to have to watch them be torn apart again. With such a plot-driven drama, the quick reconnection makes me think we’ll be moving on to some terribleness for them pretty quickly.
It is very lovely to watch them together, though! Doo-hak and Cheol-woong have been reduced to such brutes, I was starting to think Jung-shin just needed to move on from both. But every time we get glimpses of the old Doo-hak (like when they go see Jung-shin’s mom in the nursing home), it’s understandable why Jung-shin melts for him.
One funny thing about this show is that it’s not only set in the 80s, but the style itself is extremely 80s. There are all these overextended fight scenes, with nameless goons coming from left and right to attack the lone “good guys” — who swiftly handle them in succession. Plus, all the over-the-top melodrama is so old school, I feel like telling people to hush because I’m watching my program.
Oddly, even though I’m not loving the drama anymore, I still feel drawn to it each week. Maybe it’s because the simplistic story, told in an older cinematic style, feels so familiar that I find it welcoming.

I really like this couple and I don't want a sad ending, even though I feel like one is coming.
Mr Oh is a ticking bomb. I think he's starting to feel betrayed by his "master" being so openly manipulated by that lady. he will blow up at some point and uncover the whole birth story.
ccw stays pitiful as ever. I can excuse some stuff because he's not aware of all the schemes that involve him, but man...... get over this girl lol it's not because doohak is there that she won't be with you. I would like if the drama created a new love interest for him and his whole storyline would be more about his family than a forced love triangle that doesn't even exist for real.
I'm really liking this drama. not the biggest fan of the whole old school look they decide to go for, but I can understand the artistic choice to do so. jang dongyoon and seol inah are doing everything right for me to be so engaged.

I thought Man Ok knows the real parentage of Cheol Woong, which is why he keeps mentioning that for some reason despite Cheol Woong's shortcomings, his boss keeps giving him opportunities.
Man Ok and Choong Sung never explicitly had a conversation about Cheol Woong being the later's son, so I assumed there was some unspoken misunderstanding between them.
1) Man Ok thinking CS wants to know about CS's parents so he can have a relationship with Yeo Jin.
2) CS thinking Man Ok is a genius who must have guessed that CW was his son.

tbh the timeline of events in this drama can be a bit confusing and the storytelling leaves a lof of things unsaid??!!! but what I understood was that man ok went after the birth story only after the mom threw that bomb on the guy, to check if it could be true for his boss. I don't think he knows for sure who are the real parents, but I think he was not convinced by what he was told. and I would guess that he might uncover the truth while being close to the real mom, now that she's working as a driver in that house.
but maybe I just missed something lol

I couldn't memorize the names of the characters lol I think big military boss asked man ok to check if what evil lady said could be true. man ok checked and the story corroborated to what she said, but I don't think he's that convinced at all. to me he is like "well, what she said makes sense, but....." but because big boss is big boss, he couldn't just tell his suspicions. he's suspicious of her story because it's such an obvious manipulation, but he doesn't have proof.
big boss clearly ordered him to apologize and act as if he had nothing to do with all the torture, but I think man ok is just holding it in for now but will do something big in the future. his character screams this type of story. not a redemption arc, but biting his master's hand after being thrown away.

I am happy to see a little bit raise in the ratings for Oasis, but unhappy to hear that you are not enjoying it @dramaddictally , but I do agree that the logic was a bit off when Doo Hak said he is going into construction to get out of the gang because Man Ok clearly mentioned thst along with construction they do tax evasion, embezzlement, money laundering etc.,
At certain times the drama gets predictable, but when it does pull twists it leaves me scratching my head, but also hooked. I guess that's one of the charms of this drama apart from the actors playing ML and FL, who are my favorites, so it was a pleasant surprise when I read that this is their second drama together as love interests (I actually forgot they acted in school 2017.)
Now, getting back to Oasis, I feel the bigest punishment for Cheol Woong will come not from Doo Hak or from finding out his real parents, but from his fake mom who is a master manipulator. It would be intersting to see Doo Hak go against her, now that she has learnt that he has taken incharge of the construction business.

oh, I remembered they were both in school 2017, but I didn't remember they were a romantic pair at all. I just thought he was the second male lead who ends alone LOL I love how inah just keep reuniting with her school 2017 mates. next project she's leading it with kim junghyun

Oh, I'm still enjoying it! Just not *loving* it like I did in Week 1. (Don't worry, I'm not suffering through this like I did with Big Mouth 😅)

I thought Cheol Woong would be the middle man/connection between Doo Hak and Choong Sung so it was interesting to see Doo Hak meeting Choong Sung directly. Excited to see how their goals and paths clash and get tangled up.
I knew right away that Doo Hak's buddy didn't betray him. It was still fun to watch the coup go down and be a success. I'm a little surprised that Kwang Tak grudgingly gave up without much fight. Is it because all of his minions knew of his betrayal?
The fight scenes have been realistic to the times. Reminded me a lot of old crime/gang movies/kdramas. A few lines & actions from minor characters have been funny and just add to the scene. That one guy that IMMEDIATELY laid down by himself after one hit. XD
Don't know if Doo Hak's new construction business will remain legal or if he's too closely connected with the gang still. Oftentimes, the construction companies in kdramas are shown to be shady and corrupt. Not that I think Doo Hak will become corrupt, but I worry that Choong Sung will unleash trouble on his company or throw it under the bus.
Still don't like Cheol Woong, but I was very glad he spoke out against his mother's relationship with Choong Sung. He's a smart guy, he could tell that Choong Sung is the big boss behind Man Ok's actions. I haven't been scared of him though, maybe because I haven't seen him much. Man Ok is wayyyy more scary and intimidating. He knows a lot of secrets. I wonder if he will remain loyal until the end.
Doo Hak's mother is perceptive when she knew that Yeo Jin only wants to keep her close in order to watch her. I worry about her being too close though. She isn't good at hiding her expressions. She might be in danger the more she is around Yeo Jin.
Random note: Do Sang Woo is FINE. Haven't seen him in anything. He is SO tall! I'm excited that he got his own loveline. Hopefully more screentime too!
I don't mind the dated 80's look to everything. It's different from my usual kdramas. It's just funny to see how the characters' hairstyles change or get shorter (LOL!).

Great recap! I'm happy to see this Kdrama rise in the ratings. And, I'm enjoying the retro-style production in addition to the period setting.
Yes, it was a shock to hear Doo-Hak say he'd give up the gangster life to "live with"/marry Jung-Shin. Doo-Hak has been firmly that he would honor her father's wishes and believed that he would never be worthy, so it seemed jarringly out of character. Perhaps it is because Doo-Hak released Cheol-Wong from his life-long debt, and now he feels free to keep Jung-Shin for himself. Or perhaps its because Doo-Hak loved Jung-Shin so much that he thought could make her believe he was no longer a gangster--as a leader he may be able to do this. Perhaps Doo-Hak believed that Jung-Shin didn't respect her father's wishes and wants her and feels he can make her believe he's no longer a gangster. Jung-Shin's business intersects with gangsters so maybe Doo-Hak thinks she will accept his new position as legit. Anyway, as much as I enjoyed seeing this couple come together in this new plot development, it seems like a way for angst, problems (betrayal?) and trouble.
Back to my "like Godfather" theory, the mob transitioned into the entertainment industry. I was expecting the same from Doo-Hak, hoping he was going to partner with Jung-Shin.
Anxiously awaiting next week's new episodes.....

A ML saying to FL 'I am never make you cry again' half way through a drama makes it certain that she is going to cry a lot more and also very soon.
I am not sure how Doo-hak can pretend that he is not a gangster anymore and that he can hide from Jung-shin that he still is doing shady business - exchanging the leather jacket and baseball sticks for a suit and a board room does not change facts.
I liked Cheol-woong much better in these episodes and already feel sorry for him, I would not be surprised if he wished he had never been born when he finds out the whole truth about his birth.

I really want to love this and Our Blooming Youth. I wish it or they really go all out into melodrama, I probably would love it more. These days, the writers thought adding some comedies into what is supposed a melodrama will somehow makes it better. But hey there are so many ways to turn something into 'comedy', what the writers do just isn't it. The funny parts feel jarring and for me ruin the mood. I know melo is my nature 😅, but there's a market for rom com genre and sometimes I watch rom com. And all I want to say: Pick A Lane writer. Sigh.
PS: My interest picked up when I read there's birth secret coming, faux parents
and all 😂 (I wish for the old makjang melodrama), but here it comes the comedy ha ha sorry I have to drop this

Dramaddictally, thank you for the recap !
Please find a girl for Cheol-woong ! The Love Triangle can only drag this show down . Somewhere in drama land there is a girl for Cheol-woong.
Yeo-jin, the Nine Tail Fox !!!
If I were writing this, she would have an affair with Man-ok. 😜 Oh, and it’s Choong-sung that has the low sperm count, but Man-ok gets Yeo-Jin pregnant! She would lie about it , no big deal.
Can Doo-hak really walk the straight walk ? Leave his crime syndicate behind , especially after successfully rebelling !?!
I hope the real mother can throw a wrench in the whole works, lol
Her husband, oh what a loser. He has burned so many people, aigoo.
