News bites: March 9, 2023

Clockwise: Jeon Hye-jin, Sooyoung, Park Sung-hoon, Ahn Jae-wook

  • A new comedy called Strangers has lined up Jeon Hye-jin (Uncle) and Sooyoung (Please Send a Fan Letter) as a mother-daughter pair, alongside Ahn Jae-wook (The Empire) and Park Sung-hoon (The Glory). Based on an award-winning webtoon by the same title, production is being led by writer Min Sun-ah and PD Lee Min-woo (Cinderella and the Four Knights, God’s Quiz 4). [Sports Donga]

  • Incidentally, Sooyoung’s co-star Yoon Park (Please Send a Fan Letter) announced his next drama as well, joining Chun Woo-hee (Be Melodramatic) and Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) in tvN’s Beneficial Fraud. I have a feeling I’ll be sinking on the second lead ship on this one, with Yoon playing Chun’s friendly probation officer, who likes to chat over cold beers and enjoys solving magazine crossword puzzles. The drama is slated to premiere on May 29. [Newsen]

  • In the meantime, tvN has been busily preparing promos for Stealer: The Treasure Keeper and a fun new poster dropped this week, featuring our cheeky hero Joo-won (Alice). Coming to our screens on April 12 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, the action-comedy will have scripts by Shin Kyung-il with PD Choi Joon-bae (Mouse, Come Here and Hug Me) at the helm. [Newsen]
  • MBC released new posters as well, this time showcasing the pretty with Bona (Twenty Five Twenty One) and Cha Hak-yeon (Tomorrow). We also learn more about our philanthropist princess in the latest teaser, where we see Woo Do-hwan (The King: Eternal Monarch) as our title’s Joseon Lawyer as well. The sageuk will be taking us to court on March 31. [MBC (1), (2), (3)]

  • Hot on the heels of Crash Course in Romance, rising star Lee Chae-min has been offered a lead role in a new teen series called Hierarchy, alongside Noh Jung-eui (Our Beloved Summer). Production is still in the planning stages and the broadcaster has not yet been confirmed, though earlier reports suggest it will be Netflix. [Xports News]
  • Casting continues for Please Marry My Husband with Na In-woo (Jinxed at First) and Song Ha-yoon (Please Don’t Date Him) now in discussions to potentially join Park Min-young (Love in Contract) and Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X). The webtoon adaptation is aiming to start filming this year. [Newsen (1), (2)]
  • Taking us through the colorful seasons with each F3, the new posters for SBS’s The Secret Romantic Guesthouse bring some much needed levity against the dire tone of the newest teaser. Starring Shin Ye-eun (The Glory), Ryeoun (Through the Darkness), Kang Hoon (Little Women), and Jung Geon-joo (Kiss Sixth Sense), the sageuk premieres in just over a week on March 20. 2. What kind of male lead pairing is this. Yoon Park and Kim Dong-wook is a recipe for indecision. It's a fraud, unfair and definitely not beneficial to me at all.

Thank goodness Park Min-young is still attached to Please Marry My Husband. I'm glad her casting did not take the hit following the scandal.

I'm not one for young-centric dramas, but I might be testing the waters of 7 for Kang Hoon.

Park Min-young seems to be finally stretching herself a bit with a revenge drama, she was excellent in "When the weather is fine". Her last two roles did absolutely nothing for her (I'd love to see her in a makjang tbh).

I'm also happy that she hasn't been cancelled

bring the action.
in fact I wouldnt mind an alternantive reality action drama where a beaten down by life hero lives out his fantasies of being the action star and the bored action star gets to be his butler / chef
or a game show where you can comete in a live action video game with VR and be a hero
empowerment needed.

Jeon Hye-jin and Sooyoung are going to be a mother-daughter pair? I really doubt the drama is about the challenges when you have a child at 13 years old, so which of these ladies is going to play someone 10 years older/younger than her actual age? Hopefully they'll at least split the difference, but it wouldn't kill anyone to cast people whose ages make sense.

Sooyoung's character is 29 and Jeon Hye-jin's is in her 40's.

Sooyoung is 33 IRL and Jeon Hye-jin is 47. So they're basically playing characters 4 years younger than they are in real life.

Which still makes it a teenage pregnancy ;)

The webtoon synopsys mentioned the mother was a teen single mom and the story is about the immature mother and cool daughter dynamic. So the age is not that far off.

2 - Yoon Park is also considering a role (as SML? oh heavens!) in that abomination doctor romcom with Park Hyungsik and Park Shinhye, which gives me even more conflicting feelings than before about the show because I kind of look forward to What's Happens To My Family brothers reunion... I'm not really keen on suffering through romcoms with OTPs I can't get behind just for bromance, but maybe the time to change my ways has finally come?

3 - ok, that poster is funny.

4 - Hakyeon showered in petals, nice. Brings back some memories))) Also yay to lack of insta filter.

7 - speaking of insta filters... Maybe they should've add 4th male lead to make it a full set? Where is autumn?

I'm still waiting for my Park Hyungsik Nam Jihyun reunion. They would make a fine pair in a sageuk.
I'm not feeling it with his current leading lady or I'd watch the heck out of it.

1000 times yes! They were literally glowing together and I'm all up for a drama, sageuk or not, with them again - this time as a main focus.

His current leading lady seems ok - neither bad nor great - but since there's barely any factual romance so far I'll reserve my final judgement for now. They do appear to have a cute chemistry off-screen though.

I've only seen two episodes, and she is a bit green for a female-centric sageuk lead IMO. Maybe lacking that mannerism that make you see her in a different era. I wish she had PD Kim Chul-kyu or Kim Jin-won to guide her. I love how they bring the best out of the actors that I would've otherwise written off.

She gets better overall after the first week, tho crying scenes remain somewhat forced. It's also not really female-centric unlike the novel, more like deuteragonist drama with both leads getting equal attention. Hyungsik is doing awesome for his part - both by performing solo and, as usual, having a decent chemistry with everyone else. I mean, we've seen worse... Last time it was Go Ara lol)))

Song Ha-yoon's casting as Soo-min in Marry My Husband gets my ears perked up because it's her real first time playing a villain (spoiler alert: she's the frenemy who's going to marry the eponymous scummy husband in the female protagonist's do-over at life). She might get a career resurgence like Lee Yu-ri with Jang Bo Ri Is Here!, but Song Ha-yoon's Soo-min is too two-dimensional compared to Lee Yu-ri's bigger-than-life antagonist (yet the former's crimes exceed the latter), but I want to be surprised.

Maybe it's just me, but the partner-in-crime/love interest characters in the revenge/rebirth genre have been so dull in general. Like even in Remarried Empress, the female protagonist's new love seemed to me like a trophy husband, even if nearly everybody has been gushing about him (he's heaps better than the Emperor, but I don't find his character particularly interesting in spite of his full package).

I'm worried that Na In-woo is going to read too young alongside Park Min-young. From what I know, Mr. Yu is either the same age as Ji-won or older.

Totally agree about Heinrey. I think there's this conniving, calculating side to him that has been revealed in subtle ways (like his designs on the eastern kingdom), but even Webtoon likes to call him a cinnamon roll.

LYR was great in Jang Bori is Here, but I'm not sure her career ever stalled for a resurgence. She's done so many longer daily dramas that are 50+ episodes that don't seem to get much coverage on DB. I'm amazed by her range, because she plays good characters as much as villains. Her crazy characters, like in Spring Turns to Spring, are absolutely hilarious and downright alarming at the same time.

The posters for The Secret Romantic Guesthouse are exactly what I was hoping the tones of the drama would be so I am even more gutted that instead it’s going to be more of the same.

No. 1 STRANGERS. MDL reports this drama will be a Hulu production. Does that mean Disney+ is in the mix? It looked interesting but I will have to drop any further interest.

No. 4. JOSEON ATTORNEY. MBC stop the suspense for legal availability for US viewers. Are we getting JOSEON ATTORNEY in the US or not?
