Premiere Watch: Brain Works
by missvictrix
Our first premiere of 2023 is here already, and January is shaping up to be a month full of new shows. We’ll be back with another post to discuss the upcoming weekend dramas, but here’s what’s headed to our weekday schedule.
Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Comedy, mystery
Episode count: 16
Reasons to watch: Brain Works strikes me as the sort of drama that is walking a fine line: it will either be so raucous and unique that it’ll be a great watch, or all of its many moving parts will work against each other and fall flat, giving us our first flop of 2023. Now, the poster of hero Jung Yong-hwa princess-carrying co-hero Cha Tae-hyun is pretty hysterical, and gives hope that they will lean into the ridiculous. But will the drama be able to pull off this very strange-sounding setup of archetypal characters defined by their primary “brain” (or trait) coming together to solve mysteries?
TL;DR: Four “brains” (or character archetypes) collide in an investigative comedy, Yeh Ji-won shoutout!

The real question is: will the writer's & director's brains work well enough to give us a good show?

That remains to be seen. I hope theirs worked or are working well for the sake of other onscreen and offscreen brains.
