A fateful reunion stuns Kim Jung-hyun in Kokdu: Season of Deity

MBC’s fantasy romance Kokdu: Season of Deity (previously Kkokdu’s Season) has just released another teaser, giving us a peek at our hero’s tragic history and introducing us to our central cast of characters. From the looks of it, we can expect lots of hilarity, banter, and the requisite meet-cute between our leads Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) and Im Soo-hyang (Doctor Lawyer).

But first, the latest teaser opens with a glimpse of the past. Seemingly alone in a barren wasteland, Kokdu (Kim Jung-hyun) stares blankly into the distance, as he narrates in voiceover that he’ll do anything it takes to reunite with the love of his life. As penance for his sins, Kokdu is subject to a freezing blizzard.

That takes us to the present, where our heroine Han Gye-jeol (Im Soo-hyang) conveniently slips and falls right into Kokdu’s arms. Except Kokdu isn’t your regular rom-com hero, since he’s a grim reaper who eliminates evil people. In an amusing scene, we see the half-gods played by Kim In-kwon (Cleaning Up) and Cha Chung-hwa (Why Her?) kneeling before Kokdu in penitence.

Despite his stoic efficiency in getting rid of bad guys, though, Kokdu is still very much affected by his past. Overcome by emotion, Kokdu calls Gye-jeol by a name that isn’t hers, demanding to know if she’s the person from his past.

That isn’t the only conflict they’ll face — though thankfully, the rest are of a more lighthearted nature. Gye-jeol’s bubbly optimism runs counter to everything a grim reaper is supposed to stand for, giving us a grumpy and grumbling Kokdu. Still, he listens to all her instructions anyway, stirring ingredients and carrying suitcases for her despite his endless complaints.

Rounding out the main cast are Ahn Woo-yeon (Young Lady and Gentleman) as Gye-jeol’s brother Han Cheol, and Dasom (Dramaworld) as Gye-jeol’s haughty co-worker Tae Jung-won.

Directed by Baek Soo-chan (Alice) and Kim Ji-hoon (Please Check Out The Event), with scripts written by Kang Yi-heon and Heo Joon-woo (Less Than Evil), Kokdu: Season of Deity is slated to air on January 27 on MBC.

I watched the trailer by accident and this looks exactly like my jam: silly and fun (that's how romcoms should be according to tabong).

And I don't know why but I think they look really good together. Is it just me?

Kim Jung Hyun usually has decent chemistry with his leading ladies, so there is hope.

Ha here I was thinking they look like brother and sister 😭. I don't know if it's the excessive makeup or the hair and styling but they basically look alike in so many of the screenshots above!

They really do and it's definitely more that just makeup. Apparently such thing is considered a good sign for couples - most likely due to "similar faces=similar personalities, so they will get along well" logic.

I think they look alike but in a good way. 🤣 Maybe I'm starting to believe that looking alike is a sign of compatibility, like Gikata explained. lol

What I really like about this drama is the plot. I'm extremely curious because it's a medical fantasy drama with some sageuk in between and it looks like a good blend of all those elements. The dialogues in the preview don't sound cheesy or trite. I'm genuinely excited.

I like KJH and I think he's one of the few kdrama actors who can combine comedy and melodrama seamlessly without making it look out of place. I'm gala he's back. I like Im SSoohyang well enough and her chemistry with KJH looks quite strong too.

Did they just... robbed male lead of one K in his very own name? Wtf...

People on MDL are speculating about FL's past life character (rebellious princess), which makes me much more excited. ISH is not that bad of an actress actually, it's just she's not good at playing bubbly innocent heroines in romcoms. Her badass/darker roles, on the contrary, are something worth to see. KJH can do enough comedy for 2, so as long as romance part works...

You're not the only one upset about the K issue! ^^

They didn't change korean title so, I assume, he's still called Kkokdu in a drama itself, which makes the whole thing even more pointless.

I'm very excited about the Mr Queen reunion. KIK, CCH, KJH and SHS were the core of MQ. We have 3 out of 4 of those actors in this drama and the supporting roles sound freaking hilarious: CCH is the God of rumours / social media (an influencer) and KIK is the God of wealth who has to finance all of Kokdu's eccentric tastes (Ferraris, Bentleys, you name it...). It sound super interesting and has the potential of giving us quite iconic characters.

Looking forward to the premiere!

My biggest concern here is Im Soo-hyang--everything else sounds really good. I'm hoping I can get over my issue immediately and enjoy this drama without continually recasting the FL in my head.

We'll just have to respectfully disagree on this. I think KJH is far superior as an actor and Im Soo-hyang has limited range. But if she outshines him here--or, indeed, just does well--I'll happily change my mind.

Same - I keep looking at how blank she is in the reaction shots and seeing Woori (shudder). I'll definitely start this but I'm not at all confident I can get past her usual bowl-of-pudding expression. Eh, maybe she'll surprise us.

Don't tell me that the preliminary name of this before Kkokdu's Season, and Kokdu Season of Diety, was Kkokkdu's Season of Virginity!

Me too. I was initially intrigued, and thought this could be fun, but my reaction to the FL was meh 🫤. It’s not enough to keep me away, but I do hope she’ll pleasantly surprise me.

The god of death is forced to become a doctor who has to save lives. *cue grumpy whiny Kokdu complaining about it in the most hilarious ways* Such a perfect role for Kim Jung Hyun! This is totally his turf.

I don't particularly dislike Im Soo Hyang. The only thing I'm worried about is her ability to deliver in the sageuk department. She hasn't played a role in a historical drama before and that's... not for everyone, honestly. Kim Jung Hyun can help her since he's quite good at it and has experience, though. Here's hoping...
