Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (December 24, 2022)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Curtain Call: This drama is finally doing the things I wanted and expected it to do, but it’s jamming them into the final four episodes in a way that doesn’t make sense. What a sad misuse of dramatic tension. But, on the bright side, I’m really liking Jae-heon all of a sudden. Now that all the innocent and hyper energy of his Moon-sung persona is gone, I actually like our defeated and deflated hero quite a lot more. We might not have dug into his backstory too much, but they are getting across the fact that his experience with his “great play” has left him a changed man. And those are the kind of things we need to see and feel, so that the drama can land (please) its ending.

Trolley: So much tension! I really didn’t want to watch another tense and suspenseful drama after just finishing Revenge of Others, but the two take very different approaches to suspense. Except Jung Soo-bin and her attitude and excellent bangs are in both. Anyway, I am impressed by Kim Hyun-joo and Park Hee-soon here — fantastic, understated performances so far, with so much emotion and subtext present even in the slightest of expressions and the smallest of scenes. I think the underlying tension of the premeire week will only increase as we go, and I’m hoping we will see this couple stick to each other no matter what starts falling apart around them.

Alchemy of Souls 2: AHHHHHHH! I’m loving Part 2! I had my reservations about the switch in the leading actress, but she’s doing such a good job! I’m eager for her to regain her memories, though, so Wook can stop feeling sad — and guilty for his budding feelings for Bu-yeon. I’m fan-girling hard for this drama, and watching it live and having to wait a week between episodes this time around is almost torture.

May I Help You?: I wish the show had not flattened one character into a pure villain and the last death was more than unnecessary, but I enjoyed a lot of it and am not sorry I watched.
The Forbidden Marriage: This gives the feel of a Korean Christmas panto. The FL is hilarious.
Alchemy of Souls Part 2: What can I say? Totally enthralled all over again. I can’t look away whenever Lee Jae-wook is onscreen. I do wish the ML and FL had equal development arcs, but part 1 made it clear that was not going to happen.
The Fabulous: I feel like we’ve seen all this before, but the fashion setting is fun and it’s pretty to look at.

Oof it's sad to hear your comment on the ML and FL not having equal arcs; such a terrible but true issue across television that it's maddening.

I'm currently stuck in C-drama world after becoming mildly obsessed with Zhang Xincheng (Steven), actor I first saw and loved in Day of Becoming You (back in Nov).
I'm checking out his filmography one project after the other and I'm finding them quite nice, overall! But maybe I'm just biased ahaha! xD

Because of this I'm a bit behind when it comes to my K-dramas!! ><
Sorry to CURTAIN CALL and UNLOCK MY BOSS, I'll get back to you soon!! 😅

I am also mildly (?) obsessed with Steven. I will check out any of his projects since his acting took me by surprise in SKATE INTO LOVE (watched for Janice Wu initially). He inhabits his characters in the way the best actors do.

Is he the one who also starred in Go Ahead? If yes, I think he is very talented! I’m watching Go Ahead now despite its many makjangish elements (I.e., terrible biological parents). I’m loving the found family there.

That's him yes!! ^^

Most parents in that show were a piece of work, for sure! I loved the character development, though it took a while to see it! xD
And yeah, the found family was a very precious part of the drama! ❤️

You are right. I almost threw things at my screen many times already whenever those parents did something terrible.

I paused on k-dramas for the last week to binge-watch the c-drama A Dream of Splendor. No regrets! I love any drama that features strong, independent female characters demanding some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

I finally finished Stove League, nice ending. But that's a show you have to pay attention to, and now I'm on autopilot semi-watching Bel Ami (Pretty Man), halfway through the series and I'm not sure what's going on but it seems pleasant enough.

Reborn Rich Ep 15 - no cliffhanger as climatic as this one, isn’t it? How excruciating to wait for another 6 hours for the finale! Didn’t see it coming AT ALL.

In these days I started My Liberation Notes, written by the woman I venerate and who gave me the most beautiful emotions of my life.

I'm on episode 4 and the quality for now is equal to that of The Great Masterpiece. I pray to God the ending is worth the unfolding (I avoided spoilers as much as possible, but I read somewhere here that the ending was found unsatisfying by many).

I am 2 episodes in and it is excellent, but painfully relatable. It is a hard watch for me.
Hope you enjoy it through the whole run!
