Premiere Watch: Big Bet, The Interest of Love, The Fabulous

More dramas are here in our mid-week and weekend slots, and now you have your pick of the casino underbelly, a pensive love story, or a not-so-pensive love story. Or maybe all three?

Big Bet

Time slot: Wednesdays
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Crime, action, drama

*There are conflicting reports on how the drama will air, but it looks like the run will likely be cut into two parts.

Reasons to watch: Big Bet got a lot of early buzz since the drama marks Choi Min-shik’s return to the small screen, but don’t let that make you forget this drama also stars Sohn Seok-gu, Lee Dong-hwi, Lee Kyu-hyung, and Heo Sung-tae. With a cast like that, color me impressed! The story follows our “casino king” as his empire is threatened when he gets involved in a murder case, and is relentlessly pursued by Sohn Seok-gu. Because Sohn Seok-gu as a diehard cop sounds verrrrry interesting and worth watching. Something about the drama’s big budget and big name production makes it feel like they’re shooting for a more global audience here — and when you think about it, this sounds very much like a Narco-Saints type setup, but hopefully with a bit more curb appeal?

TL;DR: Choi Min-shik returns to the small screen, big bet and big budget, Sohn Seok-gu steal my our heart

The Interest of Love

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Melodrama, romance, drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I never met a melancholy romance I didn’t like, and since the atmosphere is half of the pleasure of these sorts of stories, it’s a good sign that the drama’s promos signal a carefully crafted palette and tone. Love squares can really work when they work, and if this drama takes the subtle, slow, and deeply emotional approach I’m hoping for, we will have a deep understanding of our characters’ flaws, needs, and what happiness looks like for them. And did I mention the casting is quite good? Yoo Yeon-seok turned down Love in Contract for this (no comment) and is joined by Moon Ga-young, Jung Ga-ram, and Geum Sae-rok.

TL;DR: Melancholy romance, love square, bank setting, Yoo Yeon-seok x Moon Ga-young

The Fabulous

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Romance, comedy
Episode count: 8

After postponing the original premiere date, The Fabulous is finally dropping. And you’ve either been counting down till this moment, or totally forgot this drama never made its premiere.
