- Fairytale-like posters have dropped for MBC’s upcoming Kkokdu’s Season, illustrating our mystical couple Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) and Im Soo-hyang (Woori the Virgin) in both the present and the past. Also starring Dasom (Was it Love) and Ahn Woo-yeon (Young Lady and Gentleman), the fantasy romance will be coming to our screens on January 27 in the Friday-Saturday slot. [MBC]
- KBS’s Brain Cooperation released bright new character posters, examining the heads of our four leads: Jung Yong-hwa (Sell Your Haunted House), Cha Tae-hyun (Police University), Kwak Sun-young (Behind Every Star), and Yeh Ji-won (Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol). In a busy month of premieres, the action-comedy will be broadcasting on January 2, with writing by Park Kyung-sun and PD Lee Jin-seo (Revolutionary Sisters) co-directing alongside PD Gu Sung-joon. - iKon’s Ju-ne (a.k.a. Gu Jun-hoe) is making his drama debut, joining Yoo Inna (Snowdrop) and Yoon Hyun-min (The Goddess of Revenge) ib ENA’s Bora! Deborah. With production led by the team who created Mad for Each Other – writer Ah Kyung and PD Lee Tae-gon – the rom-com is set to air in the early half of 2023. [News1]
- New stills have come out for tvN’s Crash Course in Romance, featuring our beautiful and fearless banchan-making heroine Jeon Do-yeon (Human Disqualification). The premiere is currently slated for January 14 in tvN’s weekend slot. [YTN]
- tvN also released the main teaser for their comedy-sageuk Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2, which will be launching in less than a month on January 11. While Kim Min-jae (Dal-li and Gamjatang) and Kim Hyang-gi’s (A Moment at Eighteen) relationship is complicated by a new love square, it looks like romance is blooming for the more confident Kim Sang-kyung (Racket Boys) as well. I will check out a Crash course in romance and Poong part two and hope that 2023 is the year of a return to old style rom coms that stick to complementary genres.
The posters are doing a great job at preparing us for the drama. Kkokdu’s Season has an interesting poster which raises the question I have had since I discovered webtoon/manga stories why, unless it’s a fantasy world, do all the characters have a similar look that does not reflect the author, artist or 99% of the readership in terms of hair, facial features or skin colouring. I get that it is supposed to be representing story land but it is interesting that all the countries that produce them read the same memo and kept everything else ‘representative and everyday’ to the person reading it. Which contrasts with K drama land, which I see as 16 episode adverts for all things Korean. I find it fascinating, maybe because representation means something to me as a Black woman living in a predominantly white country.

Excited about the historical fantasy one, but don't like the historically inaccurate hair.........
