Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (November 26, 2022)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Currently covering: Revenge of Others

Curtain Call: I’m starting to feel like this drama is holding back. We are basically halfway through and yet… still waiting for something to actually happen? And I’m not one to complain over a slow-moving plot! It just seems like for all the potential they have and all the setting up they’ve been doing, we haven’t seen a whole lot of plot development. Maybe they’re planning to go nuts in the second half?

Summer Strike: I loved this drama’s premiere week. I didn’t expect such a somber backstory for our heroine, but it made her life change so much more relieving, necessary, and deserved. It’s quite a leap of faith she took, and I love the bravery and optimism of this character — cause yeah, I would definitely not be okay with a lot of the things she was okay with. Anyway, it was a lovely setup, I can’t wait to see our characters a bit more, and hopefully for the whole village to warm up to her. Also, I happened to find the socks and sandals adorable on her.

DaebakGrits

Currently covering: Behind Every Star

Summer Strike: I’m actually someone that finds comfort in my daily routine, and the idea of packing up my whole life and just going wherever the wind takes me sends me into a panic. Needless to say, it’s hard for me to relate to this drama’s heroine, who would rather drag her feet around town in a pair of broken sandals than change into the sneakers tucked in the side pocket of her hiking backpack. I’m liking the start of this drama, though, and for now I plan on sticking with it.

Please Send a Fan Letter: Oooooo! This one is cute! I could do without the excessively bright pink walls of the children’s hospital that make me think of a candy store — not dying children. Maybe that’s what they were aiming for: brightness instead of death. But when one of your main characters is a sick child and everything (thus far) has been pretty stinkin’ cute and happy, maybe using a traditional hospital setting would have been better at keeping viewers grounded and prepared for the potential sad ending. Otherwise, I loved every bit of this new drama. I’m just concerned about how much it’s going to make me ugly cry later.

Love is for Suckers: I’m frustrated that the first thirty minutes of Episode 14 were an extended cut of the last ten minutes of Episode 13. Just shows that this drama would have been better at only 12 episodes. Props to Ji-yeon for taking slight control of her story’s narrative and shoving a cake in Jae-hoon’s face, but she still came off as extremely passive and mopey. Girl, if you want people to stop feeling sad for you, stop feeling sorry for yourself. I’m still excited for next week’s finale, and I’m curious to see if it will end like I’ve been predicting — with Chae-ri editing behind-the-scenes footage to reveal the true love story between Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon in the final episode of the reality show.

Cheer Up: After the hiatus a couple of weeks ago, this one briefly dropped off my radar, but as soon as I picked it up again, I wondered why I’ve skipped it the last few weeks. The cheer aspect of it has lost some of its appeal for me, but I still love the characters and the Scooby Doo-like mystery.

Please Send A Fan Letter: the show is cute and feels familiar. I'm happy to see Yoon Park in a leading role, having Yoon Park as a calm and cool sunbae? I'll fall for him too!
I'm worried about the ending though

Through the Darkness: I finally finished it! The scene when Hayoung eats sweet potato while crying breaks my heart. I'm not entirely convinced by him coming back to squad but if Hayoung is happy, i'm happy too. Overall, this is his journey.

Twenty Five Twenty One: I am one weird person who watched this drama from episode 9 back when this drama was airing. But the decision led me to come again to this show to finally watch it (or binge watch it) from the beginning, because i like the ending and this is a good show. I love Na Heedo, her spirit, her big dream, her honesty, her big heart. I want to be her friend and hear her talk. One thing i'm not convinced enough is the OTP. I understand the attraction, but not romantically. Maybe i'm the only one.

Also I'm watching Nine now. I'm ready for the journey!

I also was never convinced that the OTP in 2521 should have been a thing, which is probably why I was fine with the ending. It always felt more like an older brother/younger sister relationship, which was cool and interesting on its own, but became a bit weird when romance entered the picture.

I find your comment interesting. So for you does it seem like Yi-jin felt any romantic feelings towards FL? And also does it look like FL felt any romantic feelings towards Yi-jin? I'm asking from the perspective of the viewer ofc. And for you, are sibling-like feelings and romantic feelings mutually exclusive?

It wasn't that I found it implausible that the characters could have romantic feelings for each other. It was more that the shift from Yi-jin as chaperone looking out for the kids to romantic partner felt a bit squicky, as did his tendency to want to "parent" Hee-do even after they started dating.

2521: You're not alone! I found Heedo and Yijin's interactions extremely cute and meaningful, but didn't think they had much of a romantic chemistry. So, them breaking up was sad, but made sense

Summer Strike - I'm not sure about this--I find the characters frustrating.
May I Help You - no episode this week.
Love is for Suckers - ep 14 really was a letdown. As mentioned, the new events didn't even start until 20-30 min. There was very little of John and Ji-wan, whom I am VERY invested in (the opposite of how I feel about the main couple). I was frustrated where things let off. The balcony incident was SO cheesy. I also just keep thinking too about what a boring show Kingdom of Love 2 would be in real life. Everyone pretty much just keeps the same love interests throughout! But I'm still obsessed because of John and Ji-wan. I wish they had their own drama!

Revenge of Others- A drama which shows brutality of highschool kids. The violence is off-putting, but the writing and the lead characters are what keeps me watching this. The cliffhangers each episode, really keeps you edge.

The Queen's umbrella- Totally loving this show. The politics between Queen Hwareyong and Dowager Queen is interesting to watch. Finally a drama on the involvement of Queen, with multiple children, showing as a powerful figure in history and is at level of the King, making her decisions and also protecting the innocent with all her might and the power. Rooting for her and her children till the end!

This week I took advantage of the U.S. Thanksgiving break to binge watch Gaus electronics (as well as fast forward through Love is for Suckers, but don’t get me started on that!). I really enjoyed Gaus Electronics. In fact its one of my favorite shows this year for its number of laugh out loud scenes. Is it perfect, with every scene a comic gem? No, of course not—sometimes its too scattershot and zany. But most of the time the writing is extraordinarily clever, with a wonderfully funny cast, and actually a perfect rom-com couple—funny but not over the top bickering, no dark traumas in the past nor dead relatives haunting the relationship. Ko Sung-hee as the female lead and Kwak Dong-Yeon as the male lead are exceptional comic actors and there are many funny throwaway lines—when they discover they live next to each other (This show’s fun with rom-com tropes rivals Business Proposal’s) she tells him she wants him to pretend not to know her, as “stark neighbors of a harsh society, complete strangers.” That “stark neighbors of a harsh society” is what makes me laugh. Then the character played by KDY calling her “sunbae” even in intimate moments. I’ve taken to calling my wife sunbae at all times. (Its appropriate, even though I am older than she is.)

One joke that I thought was particularly clever was to have the love-struck chaebol attempt to use a (distorted) line from My Liberation Notes to woo his crush: “Revere me. Revere me, or go lose weight in less than an hour” Her response “You shouldn’t have messed with Mr. Gu.” It was really funny in context, but one of the reasons I thought it was especially funny is that I too have actually jokingly used the “worship me” line with my wife several times after we watched Liberation Notes. (I don’t over use it: I’ve only said “worship me” when I’ve done something consequential, like twisting open a stuck jar lid or cleaning the toilet.) I highly recommend this line for a laugh, BUT ONLY if your date, partner, or spouse has seen Liberation Notes. Otherwise the reaction will be uncomprehending irritation.
.
After watching Gaus, I am so pleased that @laurensophie, @elinor @jerrykuvira, @lordcobol @oldlawyer, @emsel and other respected DB commentators also liked it, because for me, they make up for the 99% of Koreans that disdained the show. Joking--as someone with deep respect for the Korean people, I actually hate that 2 of the few shows that I really enjoyed this year (Sh**ting Stars and Gaus) were actually two of the lowest rated of the year. The knowledge that if my views became known, I would be disliked by 98.3% of Koreans, or 50,501,178 people, is a sobering thought, though it does prevent overconfidence!

Episode 1 of Gaus was the weakest, I thought (just as episode 1 of Sh**ting Stars was not amusing). But Gaus really hit its stride with episode 2. The ad for the vacuum would suck up bad memories, along with a couple of the other ads, were funny commentaries on the way we (or perhaps I should just say I) always hope that consumer products or gadgets will help us solve personal, real life problems. I have been making the argument to my wife that a new, larger t.v. will make the quality of kdramas even better, but so far she's resistant.

Somehow I missed Shooting Stars when it aired. Thanks for mentioning it. I've binging it after reading your post. I was looking for something entertaining and funny after Gaus and this fits the spot.

I always thought Gaus's rating was because it was on a smaller cable network. It was a gem. I was hoping for a second season.

This last year I've been feeling a bit out of pace with the Beaniesphere, which is mostly a consequence of the multiplication of drama outlets, most of which I don't have access to, or if I do, dramas tend to be aired with a month's delay in my region.
All this to say that I went back to my lonely drama viewing (*sob). No fangirling on the Beanie-wall because going there is getting spoiled. No more fun screengrabing to make gifs because Netflix and Viki apparently don't like free advertising (*sniffle). No bonding with other Beanies over drama cuties (*sigh). I'm a sad, sad Bean.
But I've been Beaning on (hi, @turtuallysarcastic)!
Last weekend I marathoned Somebody , which was... unhealthily gripping? Look, I don't think I'd recommend this to anybody unless they are into serial killers because there's so much questionable stuff about it. But it feels a lot like k-cinema. Both acting and production are luxourious.
I also watched the first 2 episodes of The queen's umbrella and loved it. I haven't liked a sageuk since The Red Sleeve, so my hopes are up for this one!
Over the last couple of weeks also binged Little Women (in my mind I call it "Captain Skinnypants saves the day - everyday") and Money Heist- Korea. Much fun, no sense.

Reborn Rich — I’m only 2 episodes in so far, and while it’s extremely well-done, not totally in yet. I did cackle with delight when I realized the Chairman and his son were a King 2Hearts reunion (they played LSG’s lovely brother and the most hilariously named villain of all time respectively.)

Come and Hug Me — I’ve been putting this show off for years because I get scared easily, but finally started and it’s v engrossing. NDR as the young ML is excellent as always.

Three Bold Siblings — I keep seeing clips of the two secondary couples which look fun, but in the bit I did watch found the ML so unconvincing I had to stop. :/

Nirvana in Fire — finally finished season 2 (which I ended up really liking, despite a months-long break in the middle) and immediately restarted season 1. It’s so good!

Waiting to hear Beanies’ final verdict on Love is for suckers before going back to it (looking decidedly less likely based on this week!) and how Fanletter ends before starting.

It actually took about ten episodes before THREE BOLD SIBLINGS really came together as a true family weekender- and that is the only mistake which the writer made. Since it reached that point it has been hitting on all cylinders.

I have a working hypothesis about that show. All good weekenders have underlying themes. In ONCE AGAIN a main theme was reconciliation of divorced spouses. In THREE BOLD SIBLINGS a principal theme is age gap romance- and it is the two side couples who pose that question in a very symmetrical fashion: In one couple the man is older and in the other it is an older woman- but the age gaps are substantial in both cases. In fact, at this point the FL's little sister could potentially end up being the Mother-in-law to the ex who dumped her. Thus, there is nothing 'side" about the 'side romances' in this show- they are a fundamental part of the story being told, and the ML and FL really serve more as the glue that binds the whole thing together. Frankly, I find the ML a bit irritating at times, but he may not really be as important to the over-all story as would normally be the case.

My wife really liked NIRVANA IN FIRE 2. She thought it was just as good as the first season. NIRVANA IN FIRE is definitely worth a re-watch.

A interesting theme that also permeates Three Bold Siblings is the burden/role of "oldest sibling". I find a lot of the characters sort of annoying, but the theme resonated with me.

The main couple are the oldest siblings of their families. The mother of the ML is not the oldest sibling (she has an irresponsible older bro), but she is the oldest daughter who financially supports the family along with her son (who is the oldest son).

The oldest is the one typically sacrificing and giving way to the younger ones. They are the ones who the parents depend on most. They are whom the parents tested out their parenting on before they knew better and would get the stricter version of parenting. The oldest are also sort of the glue. It is a role that is an indelible part of one's identity. I think in korean culture, the oldest son role has extra expectations to carry on the family line, lead memorials/funerals, and personally take care of the parents in their old age (like let them move in with him and the wife) etc. The parents are more critical about who the oldest son marries and women find marrying the oldest son of the family just burdensome.

I only have one sibling, and I haven't been asked to sacrifice for him besides the usual stuff that happens when you're a kid, but I totally understand the burden of being the oldest daughter.

Required fields are marked *

As the oldest of six siblings, it particularly resonates with me. While not as explicitly expressed as in Asian cultures it is in fact to some extent a universal phenomenon. Example: when the younger kids mess up part of the blame always fall on the oldest child. He or she is supposed to be responsible at all times.

But, in the end there is a sort of reward for that oldest child. The oldest usually grows up into a truly responsible adult and, statistically, is far more likely to be placed in a position of authority and responsibility. This actually makes sense: Who do you put in charge? Anyone at random or that individual who has largely even lost the ability to be irresponsible- being responsible is all they know.

The Koreans and Chinese basically simply formalized this idea of the unique responsibility of the oldest as one of the tenets of Confucianism. As you have noted Oldest Son has very specific duties assigned to his role. For all the drawbacks of his teachings (and they are many indeed) the master Kung was a keen observer of human nature and had a great many insights into what could create a stable society. That includes noticing the unique character of the oldest child in the structure of the family, which in turn is the building block of society.

Love Is for Suckers: Still watching despite moral qualms about, well, everyone at this point. The show-within-the-show is BORING and its crappiness has infected LIfS. So much wasted potential.
May I Help You?: I missed this!
Summer Strike: Uneven but promising start. Im Si-wan is charmingly expressive when he’s silent and I’m looking forward to him actually speaking. His caterpillar flip in the sleeping bag was impressive! (There must be abs in there somewhere.)
Fanletter, Please: The first two episodes were unexpectedly engaging, but ep. 3 got messy. I’ll finish it anyway.

Older stuff:
Beyond Evil: Halfway through and this is so creepy and good - but so intense I can only watch one episode every couple of days.
Greasy Melo/Wok of Love: Still watching, although it’s devolving into something less clever and more disjointed in the second half. Jang Hyuk alone still makes it worth it.
Alchemy of Souls: Rewatching Part 1, one episode a day until Part 2 starts. It’s addictive fun all over again!

I’ll have plenty of time for drama-watching this week now that I have Covid. 😒 Dammit, I escaped for so long …

This may be based on too small a sample having only seen 3 of his dramas but I have described Siwan’s acting voice as ‘melodic monotone’ if that makes sense. I have never heard him sing. To me he keeps his voice and tone in a narrow range but it works. In TRACER he raised his voice and even yelled at times so that was a bit different. I am expecting in SUMMER STRIKE for him to use the voice I know him for.

But not as fun as Cheat on me if you can. In both these dramas, they are all crazy and lie all the time.
She and her perfect husband is a bit slow on the cuteness and gives too much airtime to dispendable side characters.
Finished: A piece of your mind good music for this atmospheric drama. I almost already forgot about The girl who sees scents.

At the cliff hanger to episode 12 I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought he went of the get his half of the shell his bride had given him previously. Nope. What we had there was a lack of communication and for maybe the first time part of the blame goes to his mother Queen Im. Before the wedding (rather than the next day after) she should have clued Seja in on how and why Cheong-ha was selected to be Crown Princess.

3. Love is for Suckers: Very boring. But I am here for Chef Jang and Jiwan. I hope Chef Jang man up and tell Jiwan how he truly feels.

Glitch 8/10: The plot's ramping up but I kind of miss the low-key offbeat vibe of the earlier episodes. Still, we're starting to get some answers (though many lead to new questions) so I'm excited to see where the pieces finally land.

Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (China) 28/58: Why do I love this show so much? Noble idiocy, misunderstandings, a lead couple with the worst communication skills in the universe, jealous mean girls who don't know the meaning of 'he's just not into you'... This drama features every trope I ordinarily hate in spades, and yet, I'm obsessively addicted. Help?

Completed:
Crossfire (China): WOW. This was so, so good. I don't think I've been this invested in so many characters in a single drama, ever. Though the ending was a bit weird. My totally baseless speculation - I wonder if this drama toed the social commentary line a bit too closely to get past censors without the sudden Patriotic Message at the end? Regardless, what an incredible story.

Young Blood (China): A fun watch! I enjoyed the comic-bookish art style, the fight scenes were great, and the main couple was cool. I'm a big fan of gender reversals in romance, and to have a badass, aloof, ambitious heroine paired with a cunning trickster-type? I need more of that. Not a fan of the cliffhanger ending, but at least there's a second season coming. Can't wait!

One of the great Chinese Costume dramas. For anyone looking for it there are two alternative titles: ETERNAL LOVE and THREE LIVES, THREE WORLDS, THE PILLOW BOOK. According to the Wikipedia article as of August 2018 this drama became the most watched television series on the world.

It was followed by ETERNAL LOVE OF DREAM, another good C-drama.

Related to it is another wonderful Chinese Costume fantasy: LOVE AND DESTINY starring the wonderful Nene and with some of the best cinematography and CGI you will ever see.

So if you like this show- there's more.

The JD ‘Silent’ wasn’t on this week - weep - and as I’m in a deadly new/recent KD slump, I went back to the ‘The smile has left your eyes’ as I wanted to see Jung Somin and SIG’s amazing chemistry again. Their connection is electric yet also poignant. This drama has many flaws but their acting is so realistic and believable in truly incredible circumstances. SIG just shines as he delivers a layered, complex, enigmatic yet tender performance as the mystery at the heart of this Drama. I would love to see them act together again in a well-conceived, -written and -directed project.

Finally started Extraordinary Attorney Woo and so glad I did. It is, so far, completely charming.

I also started New Life Begins yesterday after seeing it mentioned here. It has made me laugh out loud a couple times. That puppy is super adorable.

I said in the other post that I was lining up winter watches for December, but I guess I needed a little splash of brightness that both of these dramas are offering.

On the other hand I did watch the first ep of Summer Strike. I don't think I'd realized it was going to be slice of life. It is interesting that it takes place in summer, even warm enough to jump in the ocean, but it feels more muted and cold compared to the color and warmth of the other two dramas.

"I’m curious to see if it will end like I’ve been predicting — with Chae-ri editing behind-the-scenes footage to reveal the true love story between Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon in the final episode of the reality show."

I've been thinking the same as you since we first saw Chae-Ri, I think she wrote a script to show at the end another reality which is each people life/feelings etc. I think through her the B -T-S will be shown

I recall an American made for TV movie which did just that.

I looked it up- I vaguely remember this from back when I had cable and watched American television. It was a 2004 television movie entitled I WANT TO MARRY RYAN BANKS (aka THE REALITY OF LOVE). The titular Mr. Banks being an A-list actor with a sudden need to rehabilitate his image by being the center of a 'The Bachelor" type show while the FL is a contestant who was dragooned into participating by her family. Instead of landing Mr. Banks (she does not care for him at all) she falls for his manager and best friend- and this is revealed at the very end of the 'reality' show in just the way described by Daebakgrits.

thank you for doing the research :) that's interesting... however the show wasn't that smart, what a disappointing ending.

I thought that the ending was OK, but it certainly was not one of the best shows of the year.

First Love, Hatsukoi (netflix)
-This was slow burn winter romance drama i didn`t know i needed. Cinematography was so pretty, i loved it. There is nothing new or refreshing about this drama, yet in the end it gave me content feeling.
