Proving Kim Young-dae is not a eunuch in Forbidden Marriage

New promos have been released for MBC’s The Forbidden Marriage, including a pretty new poster and comedy-packed video teaser of our main cast: Kim Young-dae (Shooting Stars), Park Joo-hyun (Love All Play), and Kim Woo-seok (Military Prosecutor Doberman).

Based on a popular web novel by the same title – which was also made into a webtoon – the sageuk rom-com sets up a Joseon where marriage was banned after a grieving King Lee Heon (Kim Young-dae) lost his loving wife. The caveat was that the ban would be lifted once the king re-marries. But it’s now been seven long years and counting while the king remains without a wife. Here enters our resident con artist Yeh So-rang (Park Joo-hyun), who claims she can see the ghost of the late queen. This earns her an immediate trip to the palace and, naturally, hijinks ensue.

The teaser begins with Lee Heon entering the palace, where he confronts two of his servants for calling him a crazy tyrant. In voiceover, we hear the gossip that the king has gone mad and that he might even be an eunuch. Having heard the rumor, close friend and government inspector Lee Shin-won (Kim Woo-seok) decides he needs to check for himself while Lee Heon flails in resistance. The appearing text screen reads: “The crazy king who banned marriage for 7 years.”

We then cut to our heroine, who proudly announces her return – confident that she won’t get caught – and a man off-screen reports that So-rang is an infamous marriage scammer. In the sequence, we watch her escape a few skirmishes before she finding herself behind bars, where she screams to be let out. The following text screen reads: “Creating a lie in order to survive.”

So-rang is then brought before the king, who asks if she can summon the spirit of his late wife. In flash back, we witness a quietly sweet moment that Lee Heon shared with Kim Min-joo. But the “possessed” So-rang behaves in a wild manner – scaring the king and causing him to faint. As the final text screen declares, “The whole nation is shaking,” we end on a conflicted So-rang who admits to herself that she’s committing high treason.

Production for the drama has the original web novelist Chun Ji-hye penning the scripts while PD Park Sang-woo (Never Twice) and PD Jung Hoon are co-directing. MBC’s The Forbidden Marriage premieres December 9 in the Friday-Saturday slot.

This might turn out to be a stinker based on the promo pics but then again, might not. It is more of a crap shoot, right?

I like the idea of this but that poster🤨 If the King’s marriage was all sweetness and light but times have changed surely they should have had something on the poster indicating trouble lies ahead. The poster art for the recent dramas has been on point giving a really clear indication of what the drama is about so when you look back later you see the key themes and players were all there hidden in plain sight. 👀 confused.com

Wait, this is the second drama in a row in which KYD has to fight off a claim that he's a eunuch, right? I hope this time he responds better than by flashing someone.

I'm not sure about this drama. I like the actors but KYD wasn't really convincing as a King in the other teasers and looks like they will be a love triangle.

He seemed rather young for a king, let alone a lovelorn one of seven years.
Perhaps the departed queen was his childhood sweetheart ?

I haven’t gone back to look but I seem to remembering reading that his wife was Crown Princess when she died. He assumed the throne unmarried.
The premise that a young king could stay unmarried so long is a stretch for me but I will go along. He should be under immense pressure by mom, Daebi, and court ministers to have a male heir.

Yeah, that's the only thing I'm worried about. :/ It takes special gravitas to really pull off a king role, even (especially?) in a comedy. And uh, I'm not sure he has it (hope he proves me wrong).

This is basically a Joseon rom-com right? I’m always in for a scheming leading lady and PJY looks like she’ll be a fun one.

I think I would have preferred to see KYD in a more serious role. I liked him in Penthouse (he had that kind of quality that made him stand out in an ensemble cast). But, I was less fond of Shooting Stars where I thought the comedy didn't work so well. I will probably hit play on this, but I'm already dubious that i will stick with it. I like my historical dramas more serious and less rom-com.

Same, I liked the webtoon but I too like my historicals serious. And yeah, I hope I'm wrong but I don't think a comedy will do him favors for a sageuk debut. The webtoon kinda tapered down the silliness a lot after the first third or so, so hopefully this will ease up on the silliness. I don't mind some lighthearted/funny parts in a sageuk but they've tended to put silly bgm on those scenes in more recent (last 10 years) times which is super annoying...and not funny.

Ah, you are right about the background music! A little like what you get in a sit-com. I've experienced that in some recent seageuk dramas too and have found it weirdly out of place. Well, maybe it is good to have low expectations!!!!

For US viewers good news. MBC’s THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE is now on Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list.
That removes one drama from my Availability Angst list. The other one right now on the list is tvN’s MISSING: THE OTHER SIDE 2.

I am very impressed by the look of TFM’s promo pics and teasers. Whoever is in charge of the look of the production is going a great job.
Perhaps it is also the result of having two directors.
After all the drama in the great UTQU I am looking forward to a comedy sageuk.

thanks for the good news on Viki picking this up! It looks fun and fluffy. I for one don't need all the pieces to fit perfectly like a real life event cause it is make believe, right? As long as the story is tight, the characters act their parts hopefully with charisma and the plot holes can be overlooked, I'm hooked! In my life nothing is perfect but the ride is what matters. This looks to be a fun ride.

I am rewatching S**ting Stars---and laughing almost every moment---so I am happy to see Kim Young Dae has another role coming.
But can a sageuk every be light and frothy? I really need a light and frothy kdrama right now.

Yikes, that poster....I know it is based off a webtoon, but the webtoon's art is much nicer than what we got here. The story is intriguing enough and I do like the actors enough to probably check it out.

That poster is just… not it. While I really like Park Joo-hyun and don’t doubt that she can pull off whatever role she’s given, I am more skeptical about Kim Young-dae. On one hand, I don’t think he has the gravitas and presence required of a king quite yet, which I personally think is a necessity for such a role - no matter the genre. On the other hand, what if he surprises us all? I’m not holding out hope for that, but I guess it’s better to hope for something tentatively okay than a complete and utter disaster.

Or maybe not. Maybe this will have the ‘so bad, it’s good’ energy that’s missing from the current crop.

lol yes, i didn't think about that but maybe the "so bad it's good" type is what we need.
And man. It's tough being a sageuk fan post-early 2010s. 😅

At the end of 2021 into 2022 we had about as traditional a sageuk one could ask for in KBS’s KING OF TEARS: LEE BANG WON. It had 32 fifty minute (ish) episodes and ended with an average Nielsen rating of 9.7%.

Looking into my crystal ball I have currently 15 dramas on my list of possible/maybe upcoming sageuk and historical dramas. Not including the sequels or series 2 (ALCHEMY, POONG and ARTHDAL) I have 9 dramas I would call sageuks but not traditional:
1. MBC’s THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE
2. SBS’s FLOWER SCHOLARS’ LOVE STORY
3. MBC’s JOSEON LAWYER
4. MBC’s LOVERS
5. HAESI’S SHINRU (Not much know other than possible ML: Kim Seon-ho and set during the reign of King Sejong (1418-1450) (Perhaps the most traditional of the lot).
6. tvN’s YOUTH, CLIMB THE BARRIER (Korean remake of Chinese historical novel.)
7. HANDWRITTEN (SIG)
8. FLOWER THAT BLOOMS AT NIGHT (PD Chang Tae-yoo) and
9. Possible sageuk set in Silla. If anyone has any concrete info on this I would appreciate hearing about it.

I too would like info on the Silla sageuk...hoping it's written by kim young hyun but probably not since arthdal is having a second season and she tends not to have projects close together (even if she finished arthdal's script ages ago). And I suppose we would've seen her name already mentioned given her high profile. But it may be years until we actually see this drama happen, if at all.

“Proving he isn’t a eunuch”? This is getting too ridiculous and it hasn’t even started yet!

I think it will be in the context of how he has lasted 7 years without looking at another woman when he has so many options available to him.

@dncingemma: Right? How is that supposed to make any sense to an audience or someone living in that world? He’s the king! Arguably his one job is to reproduce and have heirs to continue the dynasty. I can tolerate some suspension of disbelief for a comedy, but this require every single character to not possess an iota of common sense - and not in a believably funny way.
