More stills and posters from tvN’s Alchemy of Souls 2

With the premiere of Alchemy of Souls 2 swiftly (but not swiftly enough!) approaching, tvN is dropping stills left and right. After the group character poster release a few days ago, we now have character stills of Jang Wook (Lee Jae-wook) and the ~mysterious~ character played Go Yoon-jung — whom we can assume is Naksu, but she might as well be a stranger because… *weeps*

Alchemy of Souls 2 picks up our story three years later, and just typing that makes me nervous. Time jumps make crazy things possible, and I’m not just talking about new hairdos. But, they also give a story a lot of narrative space, so let’s hope the Hong sisters have a good plan up their sleeves. I’m going to need reunited lovers, stat. In the meantime, let’s hope the promos keep dropping at their current rapid pace.

The final 10 episodes of Alchemy of Souls premiere on tvN on December 10.

I feel that they will only show Mudeok in flashbacks as she no longer exists as such in that universe and those will be the cameos of Jung Somin. Sob sob. This is probably the reason Ook has become a “heartbroken monster who chases monsters” and has waged a war not only against chinmu and co but also his loved ones in that 3 year time jump.

Her posters give more the feeling she's the missing daughter than Nasku the dangerous assassin...

That seems to be the vibe. If so, how will they pull this off? Pretend Mudeok never looked like Jung Somin and always like Goo Yoonjung?

It looks like they switched :
1st season : Naksu in the daughter body
2nd season : the daughter in Naksu body

But how? Why? No idea...

That was my impression as well. And soul-Naksu/Mudeok is floating in there, like how Bu-yeon was when Naksu took over OG Mudeok/Buyeon's body. They may try to have us assume it's an amnesiac Naksu, but then surprise! She was an amnesiac Bu-yeon all along!

I'm more scared she's amnesiac lol Because we're back to square one (and the episode count for season 2 is much shorter, isn't it?)

Only 10 episodes, I think.

@kurama 10 episodes to tackle new characters, political intrigues, swarming of hwanhonins, Naksu's spiritual journey, reunions and rekindling of feelings? 😬 Well the director said 24 episodes weren't enough to delve into the world of Alchemy of Souls, so I hope for the best.

Oops I meant 20 episodes

@sooyi: Unfortunately, we should expect amnesia as a very likely plot device but how long will they drag it out?

My Korean isn’t as good as I would like it to be so I hadn’t realised it had been clearly flagged as such.

Is there any chance this is more figurative? Like, "I've lost all the things that once motivated me and formed my identity so now I have to figure out who I am without all those things"?

@jls943 I mean I was thinking that if Naksu were to have a new body crafted for her, she is likely to undergo an identity crisis as she's not yet accustomed to the idea she is herself again but at the same time she feels she is Mudeok, and she is at a loss what to do because her revenge ended up being wrong and futile, she has no true home, family and friends, and she doesn't have Wook beside her. I was thinking amnesia is another possible scenario because she's in a new body, so she's probably starting her life with a fresh new state as in having zero memories from her double life as Naksu/Mudeok.

2

@sooyi Yeah, I thought it could go either way, but I was also wondering if the actual Korean makes one of those scenarios more likely. We may very well have to deal with amnesia, and there would be decent justification for it, what with all the body swapping and trauma, I just don't know Korean well enough to know what they are implying in these stills.

From the teasers and snippets, it looks like Naksu and Wook are in reverse positions in the second season: previously Wook wanted to find himself while Naksu was more in a dark place, and if it weren't for Wook and her newfound friends, she would have tried to return to her former glory, that is had she not been found and killed by Jin Mu.

It's funny because I was wondering why the jade was called yin and yang when it's red and blue, but then the second season is subtitled Light and Darkness, so the jade likely symbolizes Naksu and Wook who are opposites who somehow compliment each other. Also I wonder if the red and blue colors come from the collars of the figurines of Mandarin ducks :) (though traditionally the blue is reserved for males and red for females).

I was already going to watch but these stills and posters really are intriguing and makes me even more curious how the characters will be different from part one.

I agree that Naksu seems too tame to be the original assassin we want to see.

If Mudeok = Naksu + Bu-Yeon and she is thrown into the magic lake, would not Bu-Yeon be the one to survive (one body in one body out)?
There is still a huge mythology gap on who Mudeok really was and what her composition of soul shifters really meant.

@welh: I bet the magical lake will be presented as the main catalyst of this transformation.

The old "magical lake" trick, huh!

No, seriously the only reason I'm watching these next 10 episodes is to see what happened to Bu-Yeon. We know that Mudeok had to go because she didn't sign a contract, but are they going to bring Bu-yeon back or not? I sure hope so since as I understood it she was the key to ice stone resurgence. But its also true there were a lot of souls flying around, and it was a bit hard to keep track.

If only the writers had followed my rom-com recipe for fantasy satisfaction--have 3 souls with different personalities in the body of Jung so-min so that when she was with them the Prince would be paired Mudeok , Wook would pair with Bu-Yeon and Yul would get Naksu. It would have been a lot of fun, a lot more fun than having Mudeok as a contest prize, that's for sure.

Then, with the running wild of Mudeok, the Prince would have been out of luck, but the show could bring back Bu-Yeon and Naksu for a happy ending for 2 of the male leads! Now that would be a soul-shifting romance!

@hacja: Huh! I think there should have been 3 clones of Jung Somin who were each the repository of one soul as per your rom-com suggestion. But, Wook probably wouldn’t have been happy with that allocation as Mudeok whom he fell in love with was the culmination of as yet unknown and inscrutable magical forces impacting at least two human beings and who knows how many ‘souls’.

Yes, but wasn't he saved by Bu-Yeon when he fought that soul-shifter? That could have been destiny at work. And didn't the mother recognize Bu-yeon in Mudoek? Or was Naksu saved by Bu-Yeon? I'm already getting a little confused and the 10 episodes haven't even started yet!
That's how they get you, though, shuffle the souls around enough, then you have to watch the last 10 episodes to see which body they end up in. Its a soul-shell game!

2

Yes, and it begs the question who did Uk really fall in love with. Was it Mudeok's physical appearance with Naksu's personality? Or was it Mudeok's appearance and Bu-Yeon's power?

0

Ooh, I forgot that Nasku actually becomes powerful in that lake. Maybe you are right that perhaps when she drown in the water, Naksu's power along with JM (he literally said, he'll use up all his power to awaken her) and the lakes power preserve Naksu's ability to comeback as herself somehow. I hope the HongSister dont disappoint.

Hmmm, a 3 year time jump. Yeah, I have high hopes that the Hong sisters can do something with the plot that will make sense and work well enough that I don't miss spunky Somin so much.

Not even interested in Season 2. The chemistry is gone. Mueok and Uk were the best reason to watch the show. Darkness and self-destruction is not my thing...
