Kim Young-dae bans all weddings in new teaser for MBC’s The Forbidden Marriage

MBC recently dropped their new teaser for the upcoming sageuk romance The Forbidden Marriage starring Kim Young-Dae (Shooting Stars), Park Joo-hyun (Love All Play), and Kim Woo-seok (Military Prosecutor Doberman).

Based on a webtoon of the same name, the plot follows Kim Young-dae as the historical king of Joseon, Lee Heon, who, in devastation over losing his wife, issues a marriage ban until he remarries (the historical equivalent of a nationwide cock block). But while it starts as an expression of grief, when we cut to seven years later, our king is still woefully unmarried, much to the frustration of the royal family and all the citizens with cancelled wedding plans.

This is where Ye So-rang (Park Joo-hyun) comes in. She’s a scammer that pretends to be a marriage shaman. To avoid getting arrested by inspector Lee Shin-won (Kim Woo-seok), she lies that she sees the spirit of the king’s late wife in the palace. But when word gets to our heartbroken king, So-rang is summoned to the palace to verify her claims. To survive, she’s forced to pretend that she’s possessed by the spirit of the late queen. She’ll have her work cut out for her if she wants to successfully trick not only the the royal officials, but our lovelorn king himself.

The teaser is more vibes than plot, but we do see the king’s marriage ban through the perspective of Shin-won, who was in the middle of a wedding when the law went into effect. We see his shock as soldiers barge in and put an end to his wedding under the orders of the king.

We then get juxtaposing shots of So-rang getting ready to enter the palace while Shin-won asks her in the background if she ever planned on getting married. The final shot is of her complete transformation into a court lady as she wistfully smiles and answers, “No.”

Written by Cheon Ji-hye and directed by Jung Hoon and Park Sang-woo (Never Twice), The Forbidden Marriage will premiere on December 9 after Please Send a Fan Letter wraps up.

Could this be the sageuk that has minimal power games involving angry Ahjussis ordering assassins to do their dirty work. If so it’s one to watch, waiting eagerly to see.

Kim Youngdae doesn’t exactly have a head that can carry an ‘Ikseongwan’. The poor thing.

Why his King hanbok is so dark? Is it because he's mourning his wife?

Isn’t white the cultural mourning colour in Sageuks?

I don't remember seeing a King in white but I'm not good at all for this kind of decorum. But he would wear for the funeral or for the whole period of mourning?

So they just chose a dark red.

In Poong Joseon Psychiatrist the widow was in white until she formally left the family and ceased to be a widow in mourning.

Maybe as a King he was not able to do that as the robes distinguish him from others or maybe women and men have different customs as women were tied to the marital home and couldn’t remarry unless they were abducted.

I think I really have a soft spot for KYD. I think he is a charming actor. If this is on Netflix, I think I’ll watch it despite my sageuk allergy.

Sageuk allergy? But they are so beautiful and colorful! (murderful too but modern drama too after all :p )

Agree on the costume part (though I'm not particularly into robes and gowns). But sageuks have court politics most of the time, and to me, that is exhausting to watch.

Yeah... but fusion sageuks are lighter.

Sageuk that has minimal court politics (but not completely devoid) would be...
Kingdom, a zombie sageuk that has more to offer than meets the eye
Chuno, a sleek action-melodrama that focuses on the slaves and slave hunters,
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, generally panned by Korean viewers but loved by international fans; the cast are mostly young so the politics might be easier for you to breeze through, and
Alchemy of Souls, basically a romance fantasy that happens to look like a sageuk; it has the prettiest outfits in recent memory because it's not limited to historical accuracy

Thanks for the recommendations :) I think from all the four (which I saw only one: Kingdom) the last one sounds like the best choice for me. But I'll need to see fan's reactions for the second ss first b/c I've heard it was a cliffhanger at the end of ss1.

I am just starting to really zero in on THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE partly because of availability issues in the US. Now that Kocowa has it as “Coming Soon” I feel there is a decent chance that it will be picked up by Viki US.
The promo pics have been gorgeous. Kim Young-dae is almost a blank slate for me. The only drama I have seen him in is SKJ’s WEATHER (2020) and frankly I don’t recall his character. Park Joo-hyun on the other hand I know from A PIECE OF YOUR MIND (2020) (5 *****) and ZOMBIE DETECTIVE (2020) (highly enjoyable).
I find the premise for this sageuk on the absurd side. That a young King would be allowed to stay unmarried so long by the court ministers never mind his mother or grandmother is a bit much but I am willing to take the plunge particularly to see how PJH portrays her character. Just from the promo pics whoever is responsible for the design of the production looks to be doing a great job.

This sageuk sounds like it's loosely based on King Munjong too. He ascended the throne without a queen. The banned marriage also happened while he was the reigning monarch.

"Hae-shi's Shin-ru" will probably focus on Munjong during his CP years.

Ml is not really giving the vibe of a king. Also, Is it just me or FL kinda look like a female version of Ahn Bo hyun.💀

@reply1988, O/T. Speaking of ‘potential’ siblings matchup in a kdrama.
For some reason Siwan’s pics for his upcoming SUMMER STRIKE led me to think there is a resemblance between him and Jang Dong-yoon especially when both have long hair. They could be brothers with Siwan being hyung. What do you think?

I was expecting they cast an actor who looks exactly like the one in manhwa but it's okay Youngdae is still handsome tho.. If you guys read the manhwa or novel it's really good also have a happy ending until they have a daughter..

Did you read the manga in English? When I have looked it up I can’t find an English translation.
