Premiere Watch: Shadow Detective, Bargain

We have two streaming service offerings this week — both dark and shadowy. But maybe that’s just what is needed to balance all the rom-coms and comedies we’ve been getting of late?

Shadow Detective

Time slot: Wednesdays
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Crime, thriller
Episode count: 8

Reasons to watch: In this gritty thriller (with epic posters!) Lee Sung-min plays a veteran detective who’s poised to retire when he gets embroiled in a new case. A mysterious phone call soon wreaks havoc and he’s implicated in a murder and drawn into an intense psychological battle with an unknown enemy. Jin Gu also stars (why does he only pick these kind of dramas?) and joins forces with Lee Sung-min to uncover the truth. But the real excitement (well, for me), is Lee Hak-joo, who’s always awesome at scene-stealing.

TL;DR: Lee Sung-min, Jin Gu, psychological warfare, crime, detective, shadows

Bargain

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Thriller
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: This short-form disaster-thriller is a remake of a short film by the same title and stars Jin Seon-gyu, Jeon Jong-seo, and Jang Ryul. The premise is super shady, with a creepy motel, a proposition, and then a by-force organ auction. But all this hell is cut short by something else: a deadly earthquake that traps everyone inside said motel. It sounds dark and desperate, but interestingly, the PD has done much lighter work in the past, with House Helper and Strongest Deliveryman on his resume, so this is quite a departure.

TL;DR: Cool cast, disaster-thriller, organ theft, deadly earthquake, general mayhem

Is it me or does the poster for Bargain make the wires and carpet etc look like entrails hanging down😱 Ideal viewing for those who love their dramas to reflect the dark and dreary season.

I'm glad they are finally airing Disney+ originals live on Hulu. I wish they would do that with the ones Disney+ licenses as well, or at least add them later on.

I agree.

Hulu now has Big Mouth, Rookie Cops and Grid. They were all added after the full series had aired.

I am at the point now when a post mentions a new kdrama coming to Disney+ I just skip it and don’t bother reading.

I suggested leading with the platform for this same reason as it prevents raising hopes unnecessarily. It looks like they are accessible after airing on another platform so as long as you don’t mind waiting then it’s not all doom and gloom.

I don’t mind watching dramas on a delayed basis. Yoon Doo-joon’s NEVER GIVE UP (2022) eventually made its way onto Netflix US and it is a delightful watch.I just finished Siwan’s TRACER (2022) (Seasons 1&2) which eventually made its way onto Viki US.

Hulu is an outfit I will pass on subscribing to. First, I cancelled them back in 2016 after they dropped a bunch of Korean content programming and that is how I discovered there was an alternative to them: Viki. Second, I checked their pricing structure and it is too expensive for me. Personal decision.

Sounds like you made the right choice and they are taking liberties knowing the demand.

I have stuck with Viki as my consistent source and occasionally pay for Netflix for the duration of a season of something I can’t find elsewhere. My only rogue manoeuvres are with the HiTV app which provides access to most things straight away. I didn't realise it was dodgy until someone mentioned it had to be if it has dramas across the various platforms.

I made a personal decision maybe three years ago or so to no longer patronize what I used to call (and recommend) ‘alternate’ sites.
Lol the practical result of that is that I was left holding at episode 42 of 50 for KBS’s sageuk JEONG DO JEON (2014). I am hoping that all the episodes will become available on KBS World on YouTube someday.
