One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

After our drama within a drama, we return to the present day where our one dollar lawyer is still his zany self. This week in another standalone case, our band of good guys takes on a fraudulent car dealership network, which is fertile ground for laughs, cameos, and PPL.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

First things first: in one of the strangest turns of drama fate yet, One Dollar Lawyer has been cut to a 12-episode drama (instead of 14). Yes, you read that right. We’ve seen episodes cut from currently airing dramas before, but that’s always been because a drama was tanking hard; obviously, the opposite is true here, with One Dollar Lawyer getting super high numbers. The production stated they were doing it to wrap up the story with greater impact, but honestly, I’m left wondering if there’s more going on behind the scenes than we’re privy to. Either way, we get Episode 9 this week, Episode 10 next week, and then the finale episodes back to back the following week.

Jumping into Episode 9… well actually, that’s exactly what we do — jump right back into the drama after our foray into Tragic Backstory. I wasn’t quite sure how the drama would handle its tonal shifts, and now I know the answer: it doesn’t. We just go right back to the wacky and comedic tone from our first five episodes and that’s that.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9 One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

Prosecutor Na ties up Ji-hoon’s tale, and Mari is a drunken sobbing mess after hearing it all, especially since the story behind the one dollar lawyer office has been colored in for her. Ji-hoon comes to pick her up, and she stares at him with this maudlin gaze and the music comedically shifts to a surge of sad strings only to jerk off just as quickly as it came.

She’s a little less sympathetic and emotional when she’s sober the next day, but Ji-hoon can tell something’s up. Why is she being so nice? Why is she offering to make him his PPL coffee? He decides that she’s brown-nosing and he says he won’t fall for it. Mari denies it but doesn’t tell him all that she knows; still, I think we can assume that Ji-hoon knows what’s up. But it doesn’t really matter for the plot — at least not yet.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

Meanwhile, Moo-jang gets himself into a load of trouble when his little van breaks down and he needs replacement. He finds a real beaut online and goes to a lot to check it out and meet with the seller. And, for some reason, this turns into our case of the week. It’s also prime territory for a ton of cameos from The Veil (where Namgoong Min and Kim Ji-eun and Park Jin-woo previously starred), so that was definitely the highlight for me.

The case itself consisted of Moo-jang first getting scammed, and then Ji-hoon finding out about it. But, in true Ji-hoon fashion, instead of going about it in a straightforward method, he plays their game, and even goes so far as to get him and his “cousin” Mari jobs there. So they can investigate. Because they’re not suspicious at all.

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

Not too coincidentally, Prosecutor Na and Min-hyuk are investigating the case, and in the end they sync up with Ji-hoon and coordinate an epic takedown of the organization, which gets more gangster-y every second that Ji-hoon and Mari are there.

This case had absolutely zero that was interesting about it for me — except the comedy. The drama really goes all in, and from the screaming and carrying on, to the engine “knocking” sound and the rest, it was definitely worth giggling over. But at the end of the episode, there’s not much we have gained for the plot, and I found myself a bit frustrated that we went on a wild goose van chase just for the fun of it. And for the chicken PPL. And then later for the health drink PPL. (There was lots of PPL, which I probably wouldn’t have minded if I wasn’t so aware that the drama was cutting itself short; we usually see PPL dumps like this in a final episode, so it feels like they’re trying to cram it in now while they can).

One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 9

My favorite bit of non sequitur plot has been Prosecutor Na’s daughter, who we’ve seen a few times for longer than you’d think it was necessary. I’m not sure if she’ll have some purpose later, or if it’s just a fun detail, but seeing Min-hyuk turn into a puddle around her and babysit was probably my favorite thing ever, although I do enjoy him and Ji-hoon’s kooky scenes together.

Still, am I the only one that feels like the drama has some ‘splaining to do? The ratings for Episode 9 were still sky-high (almost 15%), so viewers for sure love the characters and the comedy. But… but… what about the story? I don’t want to jump around all higgledy-piggledy anymore; I want the story to take what it’s built — present day zaniness and tragic backstory that needs resolution — and blend it into a plot smoothie.

Well, we get a peak at what might be coming down the pike as our episode ends. Mari and Moo-jang are entertaining a new ~mysterious~ client, and when Ji-hoon walks in and they stand face to face, it’s clear he’s holding onto his persona by a thread. The clenched fist doth tell all, for this is dramaland.

@missvictrix thanks for the weecap. I started to watch the episode and got distracted and reading this I wont wast my time. The fact he turned up in overalls claiming to know about cars when he clearly doesn’t was a red flag that he was going to look stupid in the next take hence my switching off.
The little girl could literally be her real life child she looks so much like her. I was confused why a child would be interested in sitting in a court room but again could not be bothered to stay to see what the purpose was. I will dive back in next week and see if it holds my interest but otherwise I will just read the weecaps and possibly watch the last one for old times sake.

I am currently watching Chief Kim/Good manager and even though I am only at episode 2 it feels like it’s going to be the same character type but in the financial sector rather than the legal field. I must admit I am thoroughly enjoying it so far and would prefer to stick with that drama rather than one at this point. It’s a shame as prior to the murder case I was enjoying the drama. Two episodes of fast forwarding one and weecap reading the second and I was wondering whether to continue. However, the show made an epic come back and I got totally engrossed in the back story. So not sure what led to the advert for Starbucks being used to highlight we were back to usual service. That would have been fine if they had not chosen a boring topic to focus on.

Yeah, I felt bad that I didn't feel bad for him getting scammed haha
All I could think was "you brought that completely on yourself"

Again, I get that it's pride thing (maybe a cultural thing too?) But seriously, why can't people acknowledge or accept they need help?! If you don't know about cars, bring someone who does. If you don't know anyone who knows about cars, at least bring someone who understands contracts, like maybe the 1 dollar lawyer you know.

The guy just screamed "take advantage of me!" and when he fell for the guy doing the sound effects, I was really like😮‍💨 haha

Hmm, I don't know where to start.

How can dramas just have their seasons cut if they aren't doing well ratings wise? What about the story? It just gets no resolutions? And why would *this* drama get episodes cut? (Brightside for the Golden Spoon I guess since now they aren't as much competition and GS will get those viewers)

I know the lead actor got married but I would've thought he got married after he finished filming.

The Starbuck instant coffee product placement made me chuckle alot haha
I didn't realize the lead actor had to be the one to show off the products haha

I think they're aiming for a second season and this one will finish on a cliffhanger. But I'm really hoping I'm wrong.

My favourite scene was Min-hyuk giving presents for Prosecutor Na's daughter and telling Prosecutor Na to go home. He's a good friend.

The rest was completely meh... I don't find the humor specially funny. There is nothing new from the past episodes.

I felt kinda off kilter watching this week's episode because on the one hand, I was glad for the high energy quirkiness but on the other hand, it felt kinda weird following all the murder and cover up haha
I felt the same way with the introduction of the artist murder.

Jihoon's antics and the reactions to them make me chuckle. The entire interaction of him trying to buy the car and the guy refusing to sell it was so ridiculous haha (the way he was shaking the car and Mari's reaction to it haha)
Oh! And the ages! Haha (if they said they were in their 20s and no one broke character at least once, kudos to them haha)
That flying leap he took was also pretty hilarious haha
It's so weird this is the same guy from last week's episodes haha

It's really cool to see his out of the box approach to handling things. I liked how he charmed the boss and then used the excuse of a faulty car (from their own dealership) to trap them there.

Oh Minhyunk, he seems sweet or at least he seems like his heart is in the right place haha
How does he go from "there's no shame in having a side hustle" to "but don't have this side hustle, stick to your day job" during a single interaction haha

Aww Mari, looking at him in a new light because she knows more about him but that just make her seem creepy & weirds him out haha

It's interesting that this manages to feel pretty much exactly like the bingo/jerk resident episode(s) to me.

I'm guessing this is the man that had his wife killed?

His fianceé*
And that's what I was thinking and then I thought, "Jihoon must have awesome memory" because he saw the guy in passing and I think the guy was wearing a mask at the time so he would've recognized his eyes.

That's awfully confident of him to come to Jihoon's office (if he is the same guy)

I think he spent sometime investigating the case and advanced to some levels. However, Prosecution prevented him. that's why he resigned

It's an unfortunate, yet interesting, turn of events with the episode cut announcement. They may be considering a Season 2 situation. I wouldn't really mind that, as long as they do a good set-up to finish what we've seen thus far. But who knows.

@missvictrix, you're absolutely right in stating that the show needs to do some explaining. There are stillso many questions regarding the death of Ji-hoon's fiancee, primarily whether Mari's grandfather is in some way connected to what happened, if Min-hyuk's father was also involved, and many other questions regarding Ji-hoon!

The coffee PPL, too funny! And that new client at the end .... Ji-hoon knows who it is.

I posted this on the wrong thread.. reposting it here.

I find it mind boggling that they would cut down episodes on this highly rated show. Its very odd and the one episode per week until the finale threw the momentum off kilter again. If I didnt like NGM, I may have dropped this show already. The saving grace is always NGM, of course. And his antics as an auto dealer trainee PLUS that scene with Min Hyeok! The pastel-painted car with wings is just icing on the cake.

I watched this to see how they would handle the switch back to the original story and as you say @missvictrix, they didn't. Weird. The reduction in episode count is also strange, particularly as they didn't advance the real storyline one iota this episode.
I wasn't expecting to be as entertained as I was though, I did find the whole shenanigans at the car dealership way funnier than expected.
Let's hope they stick to the main story for the next three episodes though and see it out, indications are they will given the ending of this episode.

I read somewhere this episode had a reference to "taxi 🚕 driver". Please tell me where it was?

I love the previous episode 7&8. Hopefully they'll continue the story in the next episode. Can we have more lawyer Lee (I don't mind if it's flashback..), more Ji-Hun & Min Hyeok & prosecutor Na working together, but less Ma-Ri 😅
