One Dollar Lawyer: Episode 10
by missvictrix
With not much story to go, our crew finally gets on the same page and decides to start putting their heads together to complete our one dollar lawyer’s true mission.
EPISODE 10 WEECAP
Finally, with only three episodes to go, our drama decides to take the story they’ve built (zany comedy world) and the one they’ve shown us (Ji-hoon’s dark and tragic backstory) and bring them together into one package. I’m glad they’re doing it, I’m just not sure yet if the melding of the tones is a genius hybrid maneuver, or the most dissonant thing ever. (Also, if they were going to cut two episodes off the drama, they should have killed last week’s car dealership side story in favor of the main storyline with the emotional meat. But they didn’t ask me.)
But back to our present-day Ji-hoon, who we last left carefully hiding his recognition of the new fancy-suited man visiting their office. It’s a funny scene — with super creepy undertones. The man wants a lawyer to clean up his messes, and money is no matter. He sees the 1,000 won fee and enquires, and Ji-hoon says, “Yes, we only charge 1,000 won… per second.” Moo-jang does the math – and a victory dance later on — but the guy and his legit-looking ID card were all a scam.
So what’s up? We see in flashback that Ji-hoon – after being stone-walled in his investigations for three years — told Prosecutor Na that instead of trying to find them, he would make them come to him. Which, indeed, seems like it’s happening.
Mari knows something is afoot, though, and follows Ji-hoon around. The two engage in their usual antics, but in the end she admits she knows he’s looking for someone and she wants to help him. He’s not pleased, and everything about his demeanor shifts.
The next day in the office, though, the vibe is the same — but now Moo-jang is in on it too. Ji-hoon doesn’t want them involved, but eventually they win him over by saying how they don’t want to see him sad, and that he’s helped so many people, now it’s time they helped him. I want to get more behind this partnership, because I love the three of them being weird and getting sh!t done, but because the dialogue was all of ten lines and the show is taking such a light-handed approach, there isn’t much depth to grab onto. I’m beginning to be grateful for the solid episodes of backstory we got, because at least it adds some gravity here.
From here, our three crazies do what they’re good at — following leads and being extra. The moments of comedy are fun (I particularly loved the composite sketch showdown), but it’s hard to laugh as hard at the show now that I know it’s doing two things at once: trying to be silly and madcap, and trying to resolve the evil corruption/murder backstory. Can both these things exist at the same time?
The man who is in prison for Joo-young’s murder is their first lead — he was bought off to take the fall by none other than Ji-hoon’s mysterious visitor. This is confirmed via Mari’s excellent composite sketch and Moo-jang’s ~red sun~ hypnosis (my favorite moment of this week, no lie).
This admission leads them to a gambling ring, which leads them back to Fire Chicken — err, Bear — and then to a veritable gambling theme park called Neverland.
When in Rome, right? Ji-hoon gives Mari and Moo-jang their precious 1,000 won bills, but they lose most of them while gambling. It’s Ji-hoon that creates a ruckus — he has some sort of magic happening at the water beetle table. It’s so weird and funny, and really just there for the laughs, because the clues wind up bringing them full circle back to Fire Bear.
If it sounds like a wild goose chase that’s because it feels like one, too. But they finally get something good: their mysterious visitor was heading to a fancy VIP event hosted by none other than… JQ Group.
Ji-hoon and team use a rogue invite to get into the event, and after a whole lot of reprimanding from Ji-hoon about how they’ll all just go comfortably as themselves, we have the pleasure of watching our men arrive in tuxes, and Mari in a gorgeous fuchsia gown.
Mari meets her mother there and gets roped into a blind date meeting, and Moo-jang gets mistaken for a waiter (WHOMP WHOMP), but Ji-hoon is right on the money. He finds the mystery baddie and follows him inside where he’s greeted with a pat on the shoulder by… Mari’s grandpa. Nooooo.
It’s unclear at this point (at least to me), how deep Baek Law Firm is involved in the Evil Badness behind JQ group, but it’s not looking good. And Ji-hoon, also, seems to be suddenly acting very out of character. A fireworks display lures everyone outside and gives off an eerie red light. Ji-hoon grabs a steak knife from the buffet – as one does — and proceeds menacingly in the baddie’s direction.
Do I expect Ji-hoon to murder someone in broad fireworks-light? No, surely something or someone will stop this from occurring. Or, the ominous moment will be undercut entirely when Ji-hoon grabs a nearby steak instead.
But just in case, there’s backup on hand. Min-hyuk and Prosecutor Na have been doing their own investigations (due to more mysterious “suicides” around the JQ slush fund) and their leads have led them to the same exact party. They arrive in a flourish, and I admit after this episode I’m liking these characters more and more. Is Prosecutor Na a single mom? Because these two might be a better match than Min-hyuk and Mari.
Anyway, though the wild goose chase felt a little pointless, I’m glad to see all our players on the scene at this party. It feels like a culminating moment for the plot, and that’s good since the drama has lots of unraveling and tying together to do in its final two episodes — which, unlike previously reported, will be delivered one per week. Let the suspense commence!

This show confuses me haha
Why is it like a bunch of different genres at any given moment in any given episode or week?
And then Jihoon has these moments where he has these layered expressions that are honestly so reflective, to me, of the layered genres; you think you're in for one thing and then something else is going on.

I think the humor is not very funny and doesn't really make sense with the characters and the story.
For the grandpa, I wasn't surprised, I already thought he was involved and that Mari will have to make the same choice Ji-Hoon did with his own father.

Now i'm curious how much is he truly involved or he was just the wrong man at the wrong time even more based on that preview...Why they keep that big bad villain secret when well well almost everyone knows who he is(or the actor who plays it)...Curious why of all the time that killer minion went to Ji Hoon to see if he recognizes or knows something now...
Namgoong Min really knows how to play a dark character sooo well making me even want to see more of it as much as i love his comical roles

That was odd to me too; why would the killer visit Jihoon three years later to see if he recognize him? Is he or the guy he's trying to please about to do something and if Jihoon recognizes him, it could mess up the plan?
I thought the scene where he was shown the sketch and said "this is how you fight for me" haha
I laughed out loud at that part

I don't want to think Mari's Grandpa had a hand directly or indirectly, or was a passer-by in Joo-young's murder. He freaking cherished her, cherished her work and clearly still thinks fondly of her based on when Mari made a mention to her picture.

This is way out in left field but what if it's Min-hyuk father that's behind everything?

It's not way out in left field, it's certainly a possibility. I mentioned the possibility of Min-hyuk's father involvment last week because the thought occurred to me also. The boss giving orders, whose face we didn't see, had a different voice than Mari's grandfather and sounded younger.

Yes,it's younger...it's not him lol,it's a known actor as i recognized him immediately as he spoke but Min-hyuk's father might be involved with him i guess...

I think it is Ji Joon’s brother who stopped him from looking inside the room when his dad had passed away.

I was so relieved when they went back to the more serious storyline this week. Not a fan of last week's car dealership story--I'm wondering if the other eps they jettisoned were more of that kind of nonsense and the showrunners realized that they were extraneous. I am curious how they're going to wrap this all up without making it seems jarring or sudden. But NGM is still the king and his acting, whether showy or subtle, is aces

I was trying to look for the post when the tone change had happened and comment on it sometime back… I was unsuccessful so sharing my thoughts for the last four episodes here:
The tone change was … wow!
Then I read somewhere that they have cut short this drama from 14 to 12 episodes. I was a little :(
Now I don’t know if episode 9 is a result of the cutting short or it is as was meant to be! I expected the car mafia case to again take me back to the big cases defined in episode 7 and 8. Yet, it didn’t. It did bring out a love line between the Sunbae I like and the man-child who joined the prosecutor’s office.
The man-child is an interesting I character, I was set on disliking him until the last 4 episodes happened. He is not a dark character. He is just needs to grow on you with his silliness.
I like our 1000 won lawyer and that is why am watching the drama. His grieving process did touch me. There are some weird/extra parts. At times, I think they are aiming at pseudo-melo and laughing at their own creation. Some of the jokes fall flat for me yet I will watch this to the end.
Episode 9– fun but after episode 7-8 felt like our lawyer would have felt after he lost his light— superfluous.
Episode 10 end— OMG did he really believe that grand-dad Baek is on the bad side? Do we need this angst or emotional stuff instead of some good sleuthing… I don’t know!
The lawyer who has been lonely and sad for so long suddenly opens up to allow friends to help — sounded too sudden to me! It felt forced. But I love his expressions — I love that he almost recognizes but he doesn’t. His expression on losing the person he had been looking for so long!
Episode 8– the murder of the fiancé/good lawyer — her not messaging him or sharing anything with him was stupid and didn’t fit well with the fact that she was a lawyer. She knew it was dangerous info or maybe not but when she saw the man in black, she could have messaged or something! If it was about seconds and her not having time then why in the world did the drama show as though she had lots of time on hand? Her dying was a plot point that was needed but how she died/their putting it together felt a bit too… off! She made no copies of documents that she knew were important! Ohh I can go on…
I wish the writer of this show had someone who could pepper the script with a little more humour. I wouldn’t mind some Pegasus market like or Goblin like or Hong sisters like humour. Right now there are more misses than hits.

@missvictrix thanks for this week’s weecap.
This right here is exactly what I was thinking because this week’s episode was a smooth merging of the two elements that have run through the season. I would not have walked away last week if they had just moved on with this one.
👇🏾
‘Also, if they were going to cut two episodes off the drama, they should have killed last week’s car dealership side story in favor of the main storyline with the emotional meat.’
Mari has saved the two clowns on at least two occasions in this drama; when they did their version of lip reading and were literally talking about the price of fish she got the professionals in and when they were drawing the equivalent of stick men she came up with a photo clarity drawing. Whilst they enjoy going on the road less travelled her sticking to the main highway adds the missing pieces to complete the puzzle.
I like that the two parts of Jihoon’s world will come together on this and hopefully that will mean that whatever is found out will be made to stick this time.
Grandpa seemed to not want to be in on the dodgy when he had feedback from one of his minions about the death and the change of his face after the greeting also makes me wonder whether he actually liked the man he greeted. I think grandpa is clean.
If that man is actually a rogue lawyer he will be collateral damage for the head of the group so hopefully he will die at the hands of one of the minions of that group rather than by Jihoon.
On a side note I was confused why they turned up in their van when surely they needed to be inconspicuous while still being their natural selves.
Why was Mari’s mum in an Edwardian era wedding dress?
How on point was Mari’s dismissal of the heir to the empire, loved that she was more than happy to show she is clearly not interested in a power move marriage 💪

As per other comments I thought this episode was neither here nor there. I'm staying for NJM whose acting is multi layered and keeps me interested. Every other character seems a bit two dimensional.
