Love is for Suckers: Episodes 7-8
by Dramaddictally
So much conflict this week — and almost none of it having to do with the reality show participants! Work and play get blurry as our heroine encounters one problem after another. For starters, Kingdom of Love has promised kisses and now they have to deliver — no matter who it is that’s doing the kissing.
EPISODES 7-8 WEECAP
We have lots of discord this week, both internal and external. At the center of the struggles are PDs Yeo-reum and Chae-ri and their dissimilar personalities. They disagree repeatedly about how to handle Kingdom of Love 2. Yeo-reum wants to make it feel authentic and let people fall in love, while Chae-ri wants to push the participants into action. A good example is the kiss that is “supposed” to happen between Jae-hoon and Ji-yeon on their first date. The stage is ready before the couple even arrives.
But while the PDs are so busy fighting about how to best execute the kiss, real emotions are flying around the set. Jae-hoon, after being rejected by Yeo-reum last week, decides to become more assertive in showing his feelings for her. As he watches her work, he notices her hoobae, KIM SANG-WOO (Lee Dae-hwi), is so good at anticipating her needs, Jae-hoon begins to imagine the two have a secret relationship. Every time Jae-hoon tries to step in and show some small concern for Yeo-reum, Sang-woo is already there. Jae-hoon finally gets the idea to try to set up Sang-woo with his sister, so he’ll leave Yeo-reum alone, heh.
Alongside the comedy act, the show takes a serious turn. One of the participants, PARK JI-WAN (Sohn Hwa-ryung), while on a date with another participant, reveals she was molested in middle school. She’s never dated or been in love because she closed herself off — and she joined Kingdom of Love to change all that.
When the date is over, Ji-wan asks that the footage not be aired and our headstrong PDs go at it again. Yeo-reum doesn’t want to broadcast something so traumatic, but Chae-ri says it’s good for ratings — no consent is needed because Ji-wan knew the cameras were on. In an effort to protect Ji-wan, Yeo-reum says she’ll get the kiss from Jae-hoon and Ji-yeon, so they can air that instead. Chae-ri agrees so long as the footage is sexy.
The kiss is to be filmed from outside, with only the silhouettes of the kissers being seen through the curtains. Given the gravity of the situation, Yeo-reum no longer wants to leave the kiss to chance. She asks Ji-yeon if they can film a kiss, and she agrees, but says she doesn’t think Jae-hoon will.
Yeo-reum goes to ask Jae-hoon the same question. He’s already sitting in the curtain-enclosed set, waiting for Ji-yeon to enter. Yeo-reum poses her question pragmatically. She needs a favor — can he kiss Ji-yeon? Jae-hoon is hurt. He wants to know how Yeo-reum can ask him that when she knows he has feelings for her. She maintains that she’s in a bind and needs the footage. She tries to downplay it: it’s just a kiss — who cares in a world full of one-night stands? He asks, “You really don’t care if I kiss another woman?” She doesn’t answer and he’s crushed.
The cameras start rolling and Ji-yeon has not returned. Jae-hoon says, “If it’s just a kiss and means nothing, then do you want to try it with me?” He pulls her in and kisses her — and the show gets the footage it’s looking for, but with the wrong woman.
The kiss goes on for a long time and they both think about how at some point in their lives they started taking kisses for granted. Kissing became a step on the way to sleeping with someone, not something they think about. Jae-hoon is paying attention now, not wanting to take this one for granted. Yeo-reum suddenly realizes what she’s doing and runs out, telling him not to follow.
Earlier in the episode we learned through flashback that this is not their first kiss. Seventeen years ago, while at university, Yeo-reum planted one on Jae-hoon in the middle of a drinking session before passing out at the table. It was clear beforehand that they were both attracted to each other — with Jae-hoon saying he’d drop anything to take her calls. The day after the kiss, Yeo-reum pretended she blacked out and forgot everything. Jae-hoon was ready to start dating, but Yeo-reum pulled back, using her studies as an excuse not to see him. The present kiss is no different — he’ll be ready to move into a relationship, and she’ll shut him down.
While all this is happening, Sang-woo has deleted the footage of Ji-wan talking about her past. He wants to make sure it can’t be aired. On one hand it’s good, but on the other, now they need really exciting footage to show Chae-ri — and they don’t exactly have it.
When Yeo-reum returns to the house, Ji-yeon is waiting for her. She saw the kiss. She’s incredibly upset and wants to quit the show. She knows Jae-hoon has feelings for Yeo-reum, but is it reciprocal? If not, she’ll stay. If so, she’s leaving. Yeo-reum responds that she and Jae-hoon are friends, and Ji-yeon tells her she needs to draw a clear boundary. Yeo-reum asks if they can air the kiss as if it were Ji-yeon and Jae-hoon (since no faces were shown). Ji-yeon agrees, as long as the kiss was “just work” and not real feelings. The two get Jae-hoon to agree begrudgingly as well.
Yeo-reum, now with conflicting priorities, tells Jae-hoon they are nothing more than friends. When they kissed, she didn’t feel anything and realized he’s not the one for her. But for him, the kiss made his feelings stronger. He agrees to stop pursuing her and walks away angry, feeling he has no chance now.
When the first episode of Kingdom of Love 2 airs, both cast and crew are surprised to find that Chae-ri has done some last minute editing. She includes the kiss behind the curtain, but also some scenes from a secret conversation Jae-hoon had with Ji-yeon the night she was considering quitting the show. Neither knew they were being filmed. Ji-yeon was crying, and the conversation makes it clear that the person Jae-hoon kissed was not Ji-yeon.
Ji-yeon blames Yeo-reum immediately (she’s a PD after all, and she was there with them that night). Both Ji-yeon and Jae-hoon begin to think Yeo-reum will do anything for the show. In reality, Yeo-reum is furious (and maybe a little afraid) since she didn’t want herself involved. Chae-ri knows what she’s doing to reach her goals, though, and along with high ratings, it stirs the viewers to root for Jae-hoon and Ji-yeon to overcome their problems and be the show’s final couple.
Now that Jae-hoon has some celebrity, and his face is on TV, comments start appearing online calling him a “murderer” due to a medical accident where someone died. The posts begin to spread, teasing the problems we’ll see next week.
While last week’s episodes pushed our leads closer together, this week’s pulled them apart, maybe further than ever before. I felt myself distance from the drama, just a little, for the first time too. There was a lot of action, but fewer real world problems to relate to. I was also disappointed that Ji-wan’s story (which introduced real conflict into Kingdom of Love) ended up being a setup for getting Yeo-reum on board with filming sexy footage of Jae-hoon. There are a million other ways that could have been done more delicately.
Now that we’re on set, my favorite parts are the crew, behind the scenes, barefoot with their bags of snacks. There’s something so realistic and natural in those moments — maybe it’s how tired they look.
Of all the conflicts that were introduced this week, the one I’m most interested in is how Yeo-reum will become an integral part of this team she’s on. At the moment, it seems like she’s just been stuck in there to create movement, rather than having a real purpose. Both Chae-ri and Sang-woo stepped over her to take responsibility for things in the ways they thought were best. Yeo-reum knows Chae-ri is crazy and there’s a line this week where she claims she can be even crazier than Chae-ri is. That’s the moment I’m waiting for.

Thank you, @dramaddictally, for the quick weecap! Yeo-rum has just been burned by her relationship and Jae-hoon pushing it doesn't sit well with me. She needs time and space for now. She's already realizing that it hurts to see Jae-hoon with Ji-yeon. And the crazy PD Chae-ri should experience the same thing she's doing to the cast of her show!

Jaehoon said to Yeorum that he’s willing to wait. But she shut it down in a pretty final way. She is not saying that she’s not ready right now to be in a relationship. She is saying that she doesn’t like him in that way period, bbut still uses him like he is her personal get-out-of-jail free card as when she likes without consideration for his feelings.

Jae-hoon may have been pushing when he kissed her, but Yeo-reum was using him when she asked for the kiss scene and blatantly lying when she said she felt nothing. The flashbacks show she's been avoiding her feelings for him since she was a student. I hope we learn why.

"The flashbacks show she's been avoiding her feelings for him since she was a student. I hope we learn why."
That's the crux of the show! Their entire dynamic! And a much-needed plot point. This is what separates a well-written 'friends-to-lovers' story from poorly written ones! ^^

While I do agree that the show should have addressed Jiwan's story in a different way (ie. she needs help and need to realize that it wasn't her fault.), I don't think the story exists just to push the kissing scene.
The story introduces more questions about reality TV: what is the responsibility and ethics of reality TV producers, why would participants reveal personal things while being recorded (shouldn't they know better), and can you produce entertainment without hurting the participants?
Chaeri, of course, is crazy--all for entertainment with zero ethics. Yeo-rum, on the other hand, can't seem to produce entertainment because she's too righteous. Although I'm waiting for Yeo-rum's win, I am a fan of Chaeri. And, that again also reveals something twisted about this whole reality TV industry. I shouldn't be a fan of a producer who turns participants' misfortune, traumas, and embarrassment into entertainment.

@nigirisushi: Did you ever watch “UnREAL”? That was a pretty dark but funny show focused on the making of a fictional Reality TV program modelled on the “Bachelor” and its ilk. It was brutal as it depicted the ratings and profit motive prevailing time and time again at the expense of ethical decision making (which arguably seemed an oxymoron in that setting).

I don’t even know if Yeo-Rum is suited for this kind of job/industry. Or one way to look at it is that people like her need to win and make good ratings without pulling those Stunts for these shows to be better. But do audience really carry for genuine love and feelings etc or do they crave this drama?
That’s why I can’t just blame Kang TaeRi.

I really hope the answer to that is yes… If you consider shows like the Great British Bake-Off, I don’t think anyone could have predicted how big it would become. So I’d like to believe that YR just needs to tweak things and then have her shows broadcast during the correct time slot (or marketed to the right people). Please say there’s a place for shows that aren’t just sensationalised versions of manufactured drama/scenarios.🙏

Love is Blind: Japan - actually felt very authentic without having even one villain. It also had good ratings. It had no "did she really do that?", "is that really happening?" moments. Just people being people. By any means it was supposed to be boring but for some reason it was anything but.

She's definitely not suited for dating shows, but IRL I think she would be fine on something like 2D1N. She would take the Smiley PD approach. Her ramen show didn't do well, but there are a lot of eating shows, and most are about eating, not manufactured drama. Something like Star's Top Recipe or Three Meals A Day.

I hold myself not to comment, but I can't, it is reaching my limit: I hate how they dress Lee Da-hee in here. She is already so skinny, and they make her even look skinnier. I wish they dress her like Seo Ji-hye in Kiss Six Sense (bad drama, wonderful fashion). Argg my eyes hurt Y2K fashion should be burnt. LOL

Yes! That's part of the reason the extended flashback in ep. 5 really didn’t work for me. It was too hard to accept these actors as 21-year-olds, Lee Da-hee's clothes looked ridiculous, and it went on too long to maintain any illusion of youthfulness. This is the rare case where it would have been better to tell than show via reminiscences. At least the show didn’t put them in high school uniforms (yet). Her costuming overall is terrible.

The flashback scenes were a huge misstep. The actors are too old to play 20 year olds, the costuming was bizarre, and what bothered me most was that their physicality was off. Siwan still had the loping, easy gait of a man well into adulthood - 20 year olds just don’t have that comfort in their own skin yet. And LDH was trying to pull some of the younger posture in, but it was like dialing up movements out of a catalogue: plays with hair, tugs on backpack straps, taps toe of shoe, etc.
The intersection of age, clothes and physical movement just ended up being totally repellant. And way, way too long! This could’ve been done in 3 mins with a montage using younger actors! Come on! Made the whole thing feel incredibly false.

Also the line when she asked "What is a surgeon?"
Really, if she was that stupid she should have been held back for more than a year!
I actually groan at every k-drama that insists on turning back the clock to show us what happened in the past. It rarely adds anything to what we already know or can guess at, and more often holds things up.
Look how effective a simple conversation can be, as with Jae-Hoon's quiet confession, and Yeo-Rheum's later devastating statement that she felt nothing during their recent kiss and there is no chance of being more than friends.
There has to be a way of handling all the "almost" and "forgotten" kisses of the past and bringing them to our attention without recreating them. What about the nosy friends? They have obviously learned certain things over the years in confidence. They could bring it up and let us know in just a couple of well thought-out lines.

“It doesn’t suit her”, thanks for that. I wondered why it feels so off to me. The styling overall is questionable to me, with SiWon often dressed like a lounge lizard and Sang Woo a baggy mess, Ji Yeon like a dull middle-aged woman and so on. I keep telling myself, I guess this is where street fashion is these days? But it’s distracting.

I agree about the strange fashion "costuming" in this show and not just the flashback! That green "cold shoulder" sweater/jersey with the long sleeves that Yeo-reum was wearing for much of one episode was really unflattering, She has such a classic model's build that they should be putting her in flowing elegant blouses and stylish pant suits--you know that's what she'd choose even if she was on the set. And then Chae-ri's one shoulder overalls, with a crop top and boots--I mean, that's a little more a young woman's style, and she looked good in it, but even if you were an "artistic" type, as a producer wouldn't you want a more professional look?

Aauugh, the 'cold armpit' sweater! That was the single ugliest garment yet. There was a similar one in Kiss Sixth Sense and it was the worst garment in that otherwise well-dressed show.
Thinking about BTS or closing-credits photos, it does seem like TV crews including the PDs mostly wear jeans and sweats on set. I'd expect a step up in the office, though.

From BTS of K reality show, I know TV crews and PDs mostly wears jeans and T-shirt, but this show makes the T-shirt and jeans looks ugly and out of place, I have no idea. They even have Lee Da-hee, gives her figure should be easy to choose her costumes from wide variety of wardrobe but eh *shakemyheadindisbelieve*

I get, that the is more casual on set, than in the office. And I do not expect business suits when she is in the office. But a bit mot professional would be appreciated. I am not one of those people that thinks, that woman can't were certain clothes when they get older, but her style should reflect her age in a professional setting.

Glad you reached your limit and started this thread! I was having similar thoughts. Then I was in H&M yesterday and saw all of Lee Da-hee’s wardrobe choices (I mean, the cheap versions) laid out all over the racks. I realized this is what is trendy right now and I am seriously out of the loop.
All the stuff is so 90s, and some of it didn’t look good even then. e.g., Chae-ri’s overalls this week with one strap unhooked. It didn’t make sense 20 years ago, it makes less sense now that we’ve had time to consider it. (These women are supposed to be in their late 30s after all.)
But yeah, I find all the clothes distracting.

I recently watched a series about two women hunting down a UFO abduction cult and I was better able to suspend my disbelief on than I can with this little show. Something about this series just rings false. Even if the leads are dressed in a T shirt & jeans it feels like they were awkwardly costumed by the wardrobe department. I can't believe those are their clothes, those are their jobs, those are their parents, those apartments are how they live, those are words that would come out of their mouths. You get the uncomfortable feeling the leads are always aware the camera is on them. Its uncomfortable to watch.

I want to see how Yeo Reum can one up Chae Ri's craziness then things can only get more interesting from there.
It was quite unfortunate that Jae Hoon got rejected again. Yeo Reum is not really in the best state of mind right now and jumping into another relationship would be the last thing she would do. She does like Jae Hoon so I wonder why she is lying.
I do like Ji Yeon but I know she will only get hurt more if she continues to pursue Jae Hoon. Its not like he will change whom he loves anytime soon.

"She does like Jae Hoon so I wonder why she is lying."
I have been assuming that her main motivation for resisting Jae Hoon is fear - of losing her friend, her support, and following up on the loss of fiance (I can't even remember his name right now lol) ... her faith in relationships, in general, is not so great right now. I feel bad for Jae Hoon having to deal with all of her rejection and line-drawing... but I still have hope that he will withstand all of that and she'll come around by the end. That "last scene first scene" that we already saw, that's the beginning of the last ten minutes of the final episode - just have to wait and see how it unfolds in four weeks.

I hope Jae Hoon can withstand it too. It must be devastating for him after mustering up the courage to confess to her. About Yeo Reum, i think its more than fear of losing him. There may be more to their past that has yet to be uncovered which can explain why she is resisting.

@dramaddictally thanks for the weecap and that last picture. I was loving his missed opportunities and that one was the best alternative especially because he carried it through to its ridiculous conclusion.
My other comedy gold moments were the imagined love scene in the tent and the transformation from ‘I don’t put oil on a man’ to supplying a full on back and shoulder massage. Who puts sun lotion under their armpits and why would you need anyone else to apply it in that fully accessible place?😐 So my question is was this a power play knowing these shots could be captured on camera and would show who was the dominant male in that situation or was it to show the chef as a people pleaser. He was told to stop being a sucker forced into butler mode taking pictures of a vain woman by and the very person telling him to regain control forces him in to butler mode having skinship with a male against his wishes.
Jiwan’s situation could lead to criminal proceedings if she disclosed to the police as it’s probably a full on Me too situation so having it on air could impact on her ability to take it further. The cousin could have sued her for defamation as he is likely to have built himself a nice smokescreen which he would not want ruined. This was a prime example of participants weaknesses being exploited for ratings with no care for the long term implications for the victim.
Why Yeoreum felt the need to lie about the kiss rather than say she was not ready to consider her feelings at the moment with the recent break up and needing to prove herself at work putting her in a position where she can’t be expected to make rational decisions in this area of her life.
Jiyeon’s logic is ridiculous she repeatedly said she was happy to be used by Jaehoon and then she had the cheek to dictate to Yeoreum to set boundaries as if that is all that was needed for her to get in with Jaehoon. I would have been glad for her to leave as the audience likes a rogue and would have been fine with seeing who Jaehoon went after next and that would probably raise the ratings more than this twist.

Exactly, wouldn’t it be great if K dramas could come up with a way to add conflict without it being personified as a second lead why not have a work related problem, or family need looking after so have to refocus energy, or they live far away so need to manage a long distance relationship.

Yeo-Reum is already in a bad headspace post walking out on her wedding, and Chae-Ri's cut-throat demanding boss-persona is doing its best to throw her in a pickle. She's in a high-pressure situation, and would probably also end up (temporarily) alienating Jae-Hoon after ep 8.
Her lying about feeling nothing because of the kiss... I assume we're heading towards a meltdown, when she finally loses it, and blurts out to Jae-Hoon about always having liked him! :D

@mayhemf, honestly, I’d love to see a drama where we root for the lead(s) to be single. I have friends who have chosen to be single and they are living very fulfilled lives where they don’t feel that something is missing. But society is judgmental, and so much of the system is set up to favour people who couple up. A story that celebrated being single as a valid and desirable choice would be amazing. (Although it would do nothing for the declining birth rates, I suppose?)

But flat out burning things to a point of no-salvage because you're sure Jae-hoon won't stay pissed for too long nor will his emotions shift just like that, that's taking advantage. I'm ready to relish in how Jae-hoon returns the consequences of her request this week.
It's making Jae-hoon look like Jiyeon subtly, except this case we know the feeling is mutual.

With a flashback to when they were 16 and she lied to him the first time, which didn't stop him trying again when he was in college and then she lied to him again in a repeat of the cringe flashback we already saw. Of course, by the time she's lied yet again about the silhouette kiss, it's finally got through to him that after the eventual meltdown confession he's been waiting years to hear, she's bound to retract it the next day and pretend she doesn't remember. The very least he should do is play hard to get after all that.

John Jang submissively applying lotion was a satisfying comeuppance and I look forward to more humiliation of him. I have not forgotten that in ep. 1 we are informed that he's agreed to appear on ‘Kingdom 2’ - and to show his butt. (He’s already shown his whole ass when he badmouthed YR on a live microphone twice so that may be less of a reveal than hoped/feared.) Even though I hate every moment of "Kingdom of Love," I'm enjoying the testosterone jousts among the men for how ridiculous they are, and that even JH is not above playing dominance games.

YES! I thought Jiyeon's logic was off. Did I miss something? I thought her lat conversation iwht Jaehoon was that she could be used because he was in love with Yeoreum. (Not that I believed her nor did I think Jaehoon should believe her). But let's say I've agreed to be the wingman for a male friend because he likes a girl, and I find him kissing the girl. I would be happy. That's my role and it worked. So I felt like Jaehoon could have said, but you knew I liked her? AND I also don't understand why Jiyeon is obsessed with Jaehoon and likes him so although I felt bad for her, I also was like, why are you so in love with him? He's not been interested since the beginning. As far as I can tell, you haven't had one great date that would cause you to fall in love. I don't think the show has established why she is so in love with him.
I also didn't understand why Yeoreum lied to Jaehoon that she didn't like him. I didn't understand why she felt she had to put Jiyeon's interest about her own.

I think she wants to be married and the other men she met on blind dates must have been rubbish. He is nice when you get to know him, his family’s link to art makes him compatible. I am guessing she likes his family and he is gorgeous so clearly she just ticked off the boxes but forgot the one that says he is a free agent and can say no even if he did not like someone else.

I believe Ji Yeon is playing a long game of revenge for something his family did with her father’s art, or her father was in love with and never got over Jae Hoon’s Mom and this is her mother’s revenge, or his father’s hospital killed her grandfather/favorite aunt and never took responsibility.

Maybe she's just a fantasist being given free rein because she presents herself as honest, sweet and genuine, so nobody wants to say no to her. That's a weapon in itself and possibly one she's used before. I wonder what her previous blind dates might say. After all, she hooked into Jae-Hoon with zero embarrassment like a master player.
We've all known people it's difficult to disappoint because seemingly they wear their heart on their sleeve, and when we finally pluck up the courage to let them down gently they bounce back up as if it didn't happen, which makes it even harder the next time (and there is always going to be a next time until we begin to suspect they are manipulating us).
This kind of person just doesn't take no for an answer because they don't believe the answer is no, and eventually nor does their intended target who is gradually worn down until there's no resistance left. I wasn't worried about Jae-hoon when he had his sights firmly fixed on YR, but now he thinks he has no hope there he's vulnerable to a spider.
It takes a direct hit with a monumental nuclear-type bomb to make someone like Ji-Hyeon permanently go away, so it may require a huge row with unforgivable things said, a deadly revelation, or YR finally coming to her senses to rescue her man - perhaps revealing herself in the final episode to be the Phantom Kisser and outcrazying Chae-Ri by running away with Jae-Hoon in a parody of The Graduate. Producer steals contestant ... a sure ratings winner.

100% this, and I have to admire the clever way Ji-yeon is set up as a character. She seems so sympathetic in that first blind date scene, when she stands up for herself and calls out Jae-hoon on his lack of consideration, and I was cheering along with everyone else. But you’re right that she’s already using the same manipulative tactics that are so aggravating now: casting herself as a victim, holding others responsible for her emotions, and using their feelings of guilt to pressure them. She pretends to accept every rejection, then makes a new request but downplays its importance, framing it as consolation owed to her for the injury supposedly inflicted on her - “just have a meal with me, as friends” - and takes advantage to push one step further. It’s only after seeing her do that several times, and extending it from JH to YR, that it becomes clear the emotional bait-and-switch is a pattern and she’s using her tears as a weapon. It echoes the way “Kingdom” looks so different BTS vs. on the audience’s screens. I wonder if we’ll see that Chae-ri knew JY was pursuing JH when she cast her in “Kingdom.”

The whole ‘using her’ was her selfish reasons. One, she wanted to be desired on the show. Not be the sideline character.
Two, she is forcing JH to pair up with her hoping she can win him eventually.
So technically her intent was never about helping him or understanding his feelings, it was all about HER.

The cousin could have sued her for defamation as he is likely to have built himself a nice smokescreen which he would not want ruined. This was a prime example of participants weaknesses being exploited for ratings with no care for the long term implications for the victim."
This is a very important point to make. People in western countries kind of forget that laws around speech are a little different in Korea. I mean, you can make a disparaging comment about a celebrity on your social media, and the celebrity can take you to court over it and very likely win. (Which is truly wild to me.) And Korea does not have a good track record when it comes to handling issues of harassment, assault, and every level of sexual crimes, including child molestation, which makes Ji Wan's admission (and Chae Ri's attempt to misuse it) all the more upsetting.
Convicted pedophile's get disgustingly short prison sentences, even when they re-offend. A very well-known pedophile was released from prison within the last few years or so after an insultingly short sentence, and he had caused such terrible bodily harm to a child, that they required major surgeries to recover. The South Korean government has just shown over and over again that they do not take these crimes seriously, and that they will not protect those who experience such traumatic events.

I just can't fathom why they would be so uninterested in taking these crimes more seriously except that they either don't care about them, or too many government officials would be found culpable themselves, and they can't have that.
I know Korea is very intense about issues of bribery though (although I don't think any of their methods of dealing with it are actually all that effective). I taught English there for a year, and teachers and other main school staff (like the principal and vice principal) are only allowed to work at the same school for a certain number of years before they have to transfer to another school. In big cities, it's 2 years. In more country/rural areas like my school was, it's 5. I can't see how this would curb issues of bribery, but it's what they do.

I’m finding the reality dating show very hard to stomach, even though it’s fictional. It’s gross to exploit people and hurt them for monetary gain, but I’ll spare you my rant about the great ills of capitalism. The frustrating thing is that holding one person or company responsible when things go pear-shaped is not effective. The system is rigged in a way that motivates and rewards us for exploiting each other, so doing the right thing is hard, but that’s no excuse to put profit over people in this way. Yuck.😖 Someone please give Sang Woo a prize. He is a decent, kind and considerate human being, and took a big risk/hit to do the right thing.
Ji Wan’s revelations should have prompted a well-being check, and the producers could have offered her a chance to leave the show (not that it seems she wants to). They’re playing with fire here, and too many people can be harmed, not least Ji Wan herself. I’m hopeful that because she’s not a main character, we won’t be subjected to the false narrative of love being able to cure all traumas and poor mental health. (PLEASE, show!! At least do that much!)
I’ve already had a rant about Ji Yeon on @asterell’s wall post, so I feel I shouldn’t go there again, but people acting the victim under the guise of sweetness is one of my bugbears.
And then we have Yeo Reum making some poor choices. I think she lied to Jae Hoon about not feeling anything after their kiss for a few reasons. For one, she seems to default to prioritising her work when there’s chaos in other areas of her life, but I think it’s also because she’s not in a place to process or understand how she feels about him. She called off her wedding to IW, on the day of, a hot minute ago. Also, she’s been swayed by Ji Yeon’s tears and feels guilty about hurting her because Ji Yeon has feelings for Jae Hoon. And then there seems to be another reason - whatever made her lie as a twenty year old when they kissed for the first time. Anyhow, if I were Jae Hoon, I would have been offended by her asking me to kiss JY for the show, let alone everything else he’s seeing from his perspective (such as Kang PD’s edits).
I was amused by the contrasting advice Jae Hoon was given by their best friends. And I was surprised JH viewed his first conversation with YR as a rejection when she said she needs a friend rather than a man at the moment. I understood that as “let’s park this for the time being because this is what I need right now,” rather than “I’m not interested in you romantically.” Communication is hard.😅
I’m hoping I’ll find the next episodes less hard to watch…I miss the first episodes a lot. Thank goodness for the brief bits of humour here and there. Chef Jang being played was very satisfying!😁

I agree the Yeoreum’s ‘I need a friend now’ to me was not a hard no just a ‘not now’. Who wants a rebound relationship after a horrendous experience with the man she thought was the love of her life in the past and was prepared to rekindle a relationship with because of this shared history.
The friends meddling is a concern, for a married couple they seem way too involved in game playing, even if it is with the best of intentions. I wonder why they don't stick to being a support for their friends by asking what they need from them.
I do think the reality show is about showing how manipulative it can be behind the scenes. It’s interesting how they are using two female producers to tackle the issues about body image, exploitation of vulnerabilities and the use of a game show for something that should be private between a couple. I think it’s great they used a male to delete the footage.

Exactly - I wish their friends would give less advice…it’s not going well. Although Hye Jin seemed to be the only one aware of JH’s buried feelings for YR, so I guess it’s all part of the messiness of relationships and friendships and history being all entangled.
That is such a good point about the use of gender in those roles! I’m going to trust that it’s all for a good cause and will be worth the rage and anxiety-inducing experience.😅 It’s funny because I understand intellectually that the show is actually critiquing the reality tv format, but somehow I still get so riled up!😅

The only person who didn’t frustrate me was Kang Chae Ri because she did exactly what I would expect her to do. I can’t even be mad at her because it’s how these shows work and she is part of that system. ! I hate these shows for this very reason. (and more). Btw, is it legal to take footage without consent and air it?
YR- nooo girl. No. You asked him a favor to be on the show and he did it. For you. Now you know he has feelings for you. How could you ask that?
Also, she could have handled the Ji wan issue differently and professionally. Is there nothing that protects the participants ? This is a serious issue and I am sure there are legal counsels for such.
JH - Dude! she asked you to be a friend for now! What’s with the kiss!
Sigh.
JY - Girl! You can like who you want. That’s your problem and I won’t judge you for it. But you have no business asking the PD if she likes him or saying she should draw the line clearly. She has no obligation to answer her feelings to You!
You constantly keep crossing the line and moping like you are a victim. I don’t feel for you anymore.

LOVE IS FOR SUCKERS: This is the week when nearly everyone worked my last nerve. First, Ji-yeon. As Daebak Grits said, she's a woman in her thirties, but she's acting like a teenager with her first (unrequited) crush. I *might* have felt a little bad for her that her crush doesn't like her back, except she's decided to ignore his very kind and respectful (and multiple!) rejections of her and focus on whether or not Yeo Reum likes him back to determine whether or not she should keep pursuing Jae hoon. This is not just pathetic, but also, deeply annoying. She keeps whining about her heartbreak over being in a one-sided love, while simultaneously acting entitled to Jae hoon's affections. The guy's just not that into you, girl! Move on already.
And Chae-ri is too one-note of a villain. I guess it's kindof cool that we're seeing a woman playing the stereotypical role of the heartless, ambitious senior at work, and I'm sure there are many reality TV execs out there, but her actions did not work for me this week. She had a point about the fact that participants tacitly agree to let go of having any say in what airs once they confess something while cameras are obviously rolling, but she then lost credibility when she secretly filmed Jae hoon and Ji-yeon And the way she threw things and screamed at Yeo Reum's hoobae was neither funny nor professional. I'm glad her boss pointed that out. I don't know, maybe it's the actress; her character annoyed me in "Love All Play," too. Right now, the character has no redeeming qualities at all, and the actress isn't playing her with any nuance.
Finally, Yeo Reum's rejection(s) were harsh and hard to watch. If she doesn't return his feelings, fine, but it's a romcom, and I think we're supposed to believe that she does. But we're not given any clear indication of her motivations and struggles in these episodes--and instead, too much airtime is spent on the vacuous reality show characters--so I found all of the drama depressing.

I really like this rom-com, but I kind of agree with what you are saying here about the characters, especially about Ji-Yeon. She's not only in her 30s, she's a professor at a university! Where's your self-respect, woman!
The one thing I would say about Chae-ri, is that given the brief interaction we saw with her Mom, and then the brief conversation with the studio head about the favoritism he was showing to Yeo-reum, I wonder if we'll get a backstory there which might make her a little more sympathetic.
Yeo-reum's rejection was far too cold. I get what people are saying, that she is not in a good state of mind, but I don't see how you can blame Jae-hoon for being hurt and then taking advantage of the opportunity when she asked him to kiss another woman. And its not as if Yeo-reum shoved him away, which would have been perfectly understandable on her part. As a friend, wouldn't you say, "the kiss was not bad, but we shouldn't do it again" or something like that. To say that she felt nothing was just brutal, and if it were me, I would have said I'm leaving the show, if only to see how she responded. Of course I wouldn't have gone on the show in the first place!

I think she has just grown accustomed over the years to not sparing his feelings because he takes it and eventually comes back for more. She shows more care and delicacy towards Sang-woo than she does towards Jae-hoon who should mean far more to her, even if as only a friend.
It's a massive case of taking him for granted built on the original lie(s) that she 'doesn't remember' something in their past (and he has tacitly gone along with it hoping she'll eventually remember/admit) but all it has done is enable her to grow the lie along with her unfair dependency on him.
Come on Jae-hoon, play the dating game on Kingdom, get the viewers' hearts racing, become the most popular irresistible man there and have YM see, through millions of female eyes, just what she's throwing away.

Quite a frustrating pair of episodes this week, for me personally.
Last week's episodes really charmed me, but this week I found myself gritting my teeth at every single character decision.
For starters, Jae-hoon. Last week he said he'd be whatever Yeo-reum needed. What happened to that swoony attitude? If he's been waiting for her for seventeen years, I think a couple of more months hardly make a difference. And what really grinds my gears is the preview for next week, in which [SPOILER]. Bitch what? What about the aforementioned seventeen years of friendship, or that time she literally helped him deal with his depression? The man is about to be thrown 🙄
I also kept wishing Yeo-reum would be more honest with him, and then ended up screaming at my screen whenever she wasn't. I can understand her acting that way at 20, but 37? Ma'am, I am BEGGING you to act like an adult.
I liked Ji-yeon, I really did, but she's seriously getting on my nerves. 'No' doesn't mean 'maybe'. 'I like someone else' doesn't mean 'maybe I'll like you if that person doesn't like me back'. F*ck outta here with your whining.
Kang Chae-ri continues to be fun - until I remember she has no qualms about using someone's sexual assault as a means to get higher ratings. At that point I'm forced to cancel her in my heart 💔Et tu, Brute?

Thank you for such a great recap that expressed so many of my feelings. I was SO frustrated with the plot this week. The backstory made me confused - why did she reject him back then? AND then I was SO SO frustrated with how they did the plot this week because I thought it was unnecessary and I began to lose sympathy for YR because I did not like her asking Jaehoon to kiss another woman. Her boss put her in there to curb Chae-ri so I felt like she just had to call her boss and say Chae-ri wants to air footage of someone confessing a sexual assault and that person has now asked us not to air it, which seems exactly what he would to curb. Before they get sued for defamation by the person accused of sexual assault OR invasion of privacy by Jiwan (depending on what the contract says). I also didn't like YR telling Jaehoon she felt nothing. I didn't understand why she was lying. And I don't really understand Jiyeon's obsession with Jaehoon who has told her so many times he's not interested.

The way I see it, YR suffers from lack of self confidence. She really is not giving herself enough credit. She probably thinks JH can do better than her. Or be in a better relationship that being with her, whose life is a mess. And she probably doesn’t feel she can give much to a relationship.
Again, in some way she is being a noble idiot. She is deciding that JH is probably a better match for him (since that lady loves him so deeply or claims to) and is stepping aside for his future. Dumb dumb and dumb.

I think I'm in the minority, but I wasn't all that bothered by Yeo Reum asking Jae Hoon to do the kiss. Her desire to protect Ji Wan is so strong, and Ji Wan is completely deserving of that protection. Obviously, it hurt Jae Hoon for her to make such a request, and then she rejects him again after their kiss instead of being honest about her feelings, and that part does frustrate me, because why? But Chae Ri was not going to just give up that footage. If the assistant hadn't deleted it, I fully believe Chae Ri would have still secretly pocketed it to use in a later episode everyone had forgotten about it. Honestly, part of me is worried she's going to figure out a way to recover it for that express purpose.

When I saw her in the editing suite I was thinking she was recovering the clip too🥺

That was my first thought. And the whole time the cast was watching the first ep together, I was just waiting for that footage to come up.

But what about Ji Wan discussing it the following day on the bench with her date from the day before? Surely the audio was recorded even if there was nobody filming them. I don't actually remember if there was someone with a camera during that conversation but Ji Wan has now discussed it twice.
We saw John Jang's audio revelation about his fling with YR being transcribed and a copy handed to Chae-Ri to read (which she then showed to YR) so would Ji-Wan's second reveal about her cousin escape Chae-Ri's attention?
I'm sorry but I don't remember the guy's name that targeted Ji-Wan in the show, but he did seem genuinely concerned about her during the bench convo, so I'm hoping that he'll eventually prove not to be an ass after all.

I totally forgot about that. I actually wondered about someone possibly being there and filming them without them knowing but then I forgot about it. I didn't even think about their mics being on. Uggggggh. It's very good writing how the whole reality program is playing out, but it's still going to be upsetting if they somehow pull her personal story into the show against her permission.
I'm personally unsure about the guy Ji Wan has been paired up with. At first, he was obviously just going to use her as part of his plan to use the show for his dating app. Then they had their date, and he was genuinely upset about what had happened to her, and I thought we were going to see his character do a turn-around. But then they talked about it again at the bench, and while I think he was still attempting to be kind, the conversation also felt to me like him trying to convince her to let them use her vulnerable moment more for his own selfish reasons than anything. I don't know how he could benefit from it, but the way he spoke just gave me that vibe. I could have read that scene wrong though, and maybe he was just trying to warn her that a show like this isn't likely to film something like that and not use it.

I agree he seemed to be hoping she would speak about it publicly to a sympathetic ear (his) presumably because he wants as much exposure on the show as possible, and the most interesting attention-grabbing chunk of their date was snipped out. He has picked her, so he wants some return for it ... but I still hope he does have a better side and maybe surprises himself to find he's not all business after all.

Yeah, I think there's still a chance he'll decide to be a decent guy, and I'm all for that. I don't get the impression that he's just a total jerk out to serve only himself but maybe more just like a lot of people, self-centered but also capable of decency.

I don’t except any surprises. He seemed calculating from the start.
I don’t even think he is a good match for her. I hope at the end of it Ji Wan gets something out of this and is able to go and live her life in a way she wants to.

The dating app CEO guy is an a-**. He clearly wanted the highlight to be on them (if her issue becomes the highlight he can play the sympathetic suitor), thus giving him a chance to be part of the star couple. Which thereby gives him more airtime and better publicity for his app.

I think the dating app guy may actually fall for Ji-wan.

Gremlich, for a minute there I thought he might, but now I don't know anymore. If that does happen, I'm cool with it, but I must admit that I'm now more intrigued by a Ji Wan/Chef John pairing, lol.

Barely hanging on with this drama I'm afraid.
JH shouldn't have pushed YR so much. It's way too early after her breakup for that, plus she's under serious work pressure.
YR crossed several lines in her friendship also. I appreciate she was under pressure, but I thought she was far too harsh with JH.
Can't say either character endeared themselves to me.
Finally, as per other beanies, the use of the same actors in the flashback was ridiculous.

I don't understand Ji-Yeon. What does she think will happen, she'll trick Jae-Hoon into being in a relationship with her? I don't know how clearer he could have been in telling, and showing her that he isn't interested. Girl, please. 🙄
