Joo-won heads tvN’s new action-comedy Stealer

Joo-won, Lee Joo-woo, Jo Han-chul, Kim Jae-won, Choi Hwa-jung

tvN is planning a new comedy caper called Stealer: Seven Joseon Coins (roughly translated), and hijinks here we come! With a notorious treasure thief known as “Skunk” on the loose, the natural reaction is to try and catch him/her. But, adding to the action and intrigue, an entity called “Karma” decides to team up with Skunk – even though their organization’s goal is to recover cultural artifacts.

In the lead role, Joo-won (Carter, Alice) is back in dramaland as a government official named Hwang Dae-myung, who is part of the cultural heritage administration. He’s known to be a slacker – even sneaking in naps on the job – and is only a stickler about using all his leave days. Until now he’s enjoyed a relatively quiet work life — but everything is thrown into shambles when he’s suddenly suspected of fraternizing with Skunk.

Lee Joo-woo (Why Her) takes on the role of the elite police officer Choi Min-woo, who has recently been transferred to a unit in the suburbs. Although her new team handles cultural properties, they’re held in low regard, and Min-woo is determined to turn things around for them.

Jo Han-chul’s (The Law Cafe) Jang Tae-in, on the other hand, once headed the violent crimes division on the police force and learned about cultural artifacts by chance. He is now leading a secret project to follow Skunk and is also (or will be) the founder of Karma.

In supporting roles, we have Kim Jae-won (Our Blues) as the fiery and sassy Shin Chang-hoon, who has a strong sense of duty to his job as a police detective as well as to the Karma team. And because every good team needs one, we also have Choi Hwa-jung (Jealousy Incarnate) as Karma’s skilled hacker Lee Choon-ja.

On the production side, PD Choi Joon-bae (Mouse, Come Here and Hug Me) is at the helm with scripts by Shin Kyung-il. tvN’s Stealer is currently being planned to broadcast early next year in 2023.

This has potential to make me stretch my reach of safe drama genres. Will watch this space for more updates to see if other elements are likely to creep in and make it unwatchable for me.

This could be really interesting, the real stories of international cultural artifact crimes are wild. There’s always a customer to buy them.

This could be good, but I don't exactly trust Joo Won's script picking abilities.

Right? The dude has a Daesang, but his post-military picks have been rough. The recent film he did was bonkers, though! There was a popular post about the projects he chooses (quality) vs. the ones his agency picks (generic).

Yes, I also saw that. Apparently, the ones he was presumed to have picked turned out great (e.g., Ojakgyo Brothers, Gaksital). Unsure about this because Joo Won and comedy and I was suddenly reminded of Sassy Girl 2.

I don't know what has happened since 2015, but sadly, it feels like he's been forgotten and passed on career-wise compared to his contemporaries. I also don't think he's good at comedy and much better at dramatic works. Not to be too down, but it's a bit sad to see what his career has become. But he did do great in action with Carter, lol!

Yes, it seems like he’s stuck with the Daesang title and all the projects after that have been letdowns. It reminds me of Moon Se-yoon’s (2D1N) comment when he commented on his fellow cast member Kim Seon-ho skyrocketing to fame with StartUp that he’d rather him slowly gaining recognition than hitting it big over night. Not sure why he said that but it seems like he knew what he was talking about.

@mmmmm Joo Won said that winning the Daesang gave him more anxiety due to the expectations. He won it 5 yrs into his tv career. Ever since that win, he's been struggling to find his footing. Right, I understand why he would say that. While on the one hand, every actor is one role away from their breakthrough. The flip side is not exceeding the expectations and feeling the pressure to succeed/handling fame. That is the trickiest part. Longevity is the most important thing for an actor. But I also feel like mental health is just as important, so I don't fault if some take a step back and reassess. Ultimately, you got to do what feels suitable for you and forget about the outside noise.

It does feel like he's been forgotten, but he also doesn't seem as career focused as he did before his military service, which is probably better for him.

I was thinking about Lee Joo-woo recently - she was really on the rise by the time she got that supporting role in Let's Eat 3, and then she just disappeared! Looking forward to her coming back and showing us something new.
But the person I'm really excited about these days is Jo Han-chul - he's just ALWAYS good, no matter what he's in.

And, he's in everything! Or so it seems. Maybe he just happens to be in all the dramas I watch. And with quite an array of roles.

I saw Seven Joseon Coins, and immediately assumed this drama was a sageuk.
I was nodding along to cultural artifacts, a slacker government official, and it was still making sense even at the elite police officer transferred to the suburbs.

The violent crimes division part was where I began to raise my brows and I was thoroughly confused when I got to the skilled hacker bit. Like what in the Joseon is going on here?

I had to reread the entire article again before it clicked that this isn't a sageuk.

I thought I was the only one! I wouldnt mind seeing Joo Won in a saguek but its okay of its modern times. I just hope thr script is good for everyone's sake. I am not a fan of his recent projects but I would like this new drama to change my mind about him.

You're not alone. If this was a location reveal click bait, they've got my location long before I would realize.

I did the same, but I think that was because there was news about Joo Won being offered a sageuk a while back, and I was thinking that this was the same drama.

So it's not a saguek. So much for Joseon and Euiguembu official.

This has the potential for a good drama except it's Mouse's PD. I hope this isn't a whodunnit. They're neither bad nor are they up my alley for the time being.

I hope this one turns out to be a good pick. He was so good in his early days projects (Ojakgyo Brothers, Gaksital, Yong Pal) and then he seemed to lose his lucky star. Picking good projects is also a talent - please regain this ability!

Joo-won is back! sounds like another have to watch for me. I will forgive his bad choices and look forward to another good one (or just watch it for him and Jo Han-chul whom I agree is just good in anything he does. But yeah, I've missed Joo-won.
