[Drama chat] Pitch your drama concept
by missvictrix
So, not to jinx this drama from ever coming to fruition, but I’ve had this in my head for years and I’m just sitting around waiting for someone to make it.
It follows a male K-pop group through the rigors of their professional life, but it’s a little more heavy and thoughtful than what we’ve seen in Imitation or the like. We get all the fun of the K-pop world, but we also see what it’s like behind the scenes, from the poking and prodding to the pressure and lack of privacy.
Behind the scenes also lies our heroine, a cordinoona and/or stylist who’s been working with the group for a while, sees under the veneer, has witnessed all their struggles and has had her own, too. Now, one of the boys in the group has his eyes on her, but of course everything he does is monitored — and he gets roped into a publicity stunt relationship — so their romance is a very slow burn of emotional bonding and silent longing. (Because catnip.)
The plot is mostly the mayhem of photo shoots, touring, practicing, getting injured, and facing scandals, but at its root it’s about the emotional effects of being treated like an object, and not a person. It’s about living a life where a million and a half fans think they own you, your career, your body, your decisions, your lyrics — but there’s really only one person you want to share those things with.
What’s the drama you have in your heart that you’re waiting for someone to make so you can just watch it already? Pitch your drama concept below.
Let the chatting begin!
Fine print: This is just for fun. No one is mining this post for tvN’s next blockbuster hit. Well, that we know of.

“ slow burn of emotional bonding and silent longing”!
Gimme gimme now.
There was a very small arc similar to this in ‘Liar and his lover’ which I absolutely loved. I would kill for a full blown version of that.

Ooooh I thought of this arc too! The lead in the group and his classmate / noona from high school who was now working in the k-ent company... Their mini-arc was worth exploring even in that show. missvictrix's version would be perfect.

Human Disqualification got it with the tone. A melancholic tone. But it was more bleak than intriguing for a slow burn romance.
So I'd want a melancholic love story that isn't bleak but is intriguing. Happy, and with the right amount of noise and silence. They don't have to be silent nor should they be shout-y. Just two introverts in love.

I woud like a good drama about Kpop. Imitation, Idol Coup, Miracle, Let Me Be Your Knight... They all have a weak script. You're beautiful was good.
For the coordinoona, it reminds me Record of Youth. Sadly, the story was disapointing.

I used to love the idea of a drama about school bullying, but one that's focusing more on the witnesses. They are the majority of the population in those kind of situations, after all. I'm also pretty sure most of us can relate to them as characters more.
Those students who eventually tried to stand up, but then got dragged as one of the bullied people, and how they tried not to resent the person they intend to help. Those other students who eventually joined the bullies while staying passive, because it's easier that way even though they hate themselves for choosing the easy way out. Those students who pretended they didn't see or hear anything, and how they might regret it a lot long afterwards, after it all only became one of their school memories.
I like the idea of exploring what those people who stayed at the background of such situations actually thought about, and how everything actually affected them. But with how bleak the world was these days, I don't think I'm up for something this heavy.
I'm just going to wait for one of the beanies to come up with something cute or hilarious or feel-good to spark my imagination anew.

I love this idea! I would watch the heck out this drama.
I do think the industry has *tried* to make the drama you described, but it hasn't quite gotten there yet.
I also love melancholic, slow burn-type stories where the feelings are clear and strong (so different than the slow burn where it takes almost the entire show for the characters to even realize they *have* these feelings let alone show them to the audience and each other). So my ideal drama is in that genre. I also love blending that with a slice of life, atmospheric setting, and simple, direct, yet nuanced dialogue.
I must confess that I'm just not into kpop or kpop culture at all (I find it kinda cheesy) BUT I like the idea of a famous (in some way) ML who crosses paths with a woman also in that industry but in a less public and celebrated role. I would want the protagonists to have some kind of past (but not a fated childhood connection). Say, they went to high school together but barely knew each other and, in fact, one doesn't remember the other at all. But later in life they meet, gel closer, and fall in love. But the hero's fame and public persona does complicate their relationship in interesting ways.
I like the idea of a makeup artist working with an actor, or a social worker dealing with an attorney or police officer--some overlapping of professions that allows the (famous and/or celebrated) hero to see how competent and talented the FL is at her job.

I've always wanted a Wise Fan Life 슬기로운 팬 생활. I need the Reply team to make it. Her Private Life did a bit but she's a sasaeng and the fan life didn't matter much later on.
I want the female lead to be a late 20s-30 something non-Korean fan who after years of fangirling, finally got to move to Korea to live the "dream". Her fave group is Super Junior (yeah this is my life drama lol. Also, I need the group to be older as the lead is a long time fan. Besides, Suju has a song for literally anything for bgm).
She then ends up living with an aspiring musical actor who's been trying to get roles for a long time but never gotten a break yet. It's the cohabitation hijinks, you know.
The drama would talk about long time fans (the kind that is done with butterflies in their tummies and are more logical) and what kpop meant to them, breaking the "kpop atm trash" stereotype. Also want it to talk about idols and what they go through after they get off the stage, that they are humans with emotions. Lastly, I want it to talk about this generation of lost adults, struggling to find meaning in life, finding each other and lifting each other up.
Just want something that speaks to fans' hearts without being condescendingf and seeing their love for idols as a long time friendship worth keeping
Reply Team, please do this!

My ideal female lead is late 20s, and lives abroad. She's kinda wild and really not about that lady-like lifestyle although her family is rich. They run an art gallery which is funny because she has zero appreciation for art. She'd rather droll over the picture of a hot guy than stare at a painting.
Her life is upended when her father undergoes an emergency surgery and is bedridden afterwards. As his only child, she is forced to put a pause on her wild escapades and return back home to run the gallery while he recuperates.
This is where she meets the male lead. He could be late 20s or early 30s. He's a geeenius artist, the hottest name in the art world at present, and the gallery's biggest signee --- although he prefers to be left out of the spotlight since he's such an antisocial recluse. But right about the time she's taking over the gallery, he suddenly goes colorblind and falls into a slump.
Between trying to hide his secret from investors and the media, running the business, and taking care of her father, our leading lady's hands are full. As for our leading man, he has to juggle going through the five stages of a slump induced grief, and dealing with a woman who only sees his pain as a slight hiccup to her business.
But between these two humans who couldn't be any more different from each other, there's still plenty of time for a reluctant romance to blossom.

I just learned the Han Groo (Marriage Not Dating) has signed with an agency and is looking to get back into the acting game after eight years absence. The nostalgia level remains so high for MND that I want to put her in something - anything. So whatever fantasy dramas you're concocting reserve a role for her.

Your idea is fantastic. I would watch the heck out of that.
Also, this is a great idea for a post here.
For at least a year now, I've been mulling over an idea that requires (of necessity) an older lead couple, basically a married couple in their 40s with a couple of kids and a good, solid marriage. It just so happens that they are also both members of the National Assembly. The ML has long been a star politician and is considered a potential presidential candidate. But in a surprise move during a party leadership meeting, it's his wife who comes out on top. This creates a certain amount of tension in their marriage, and how they navigate that tension while also each trying to make to the Blue House is the core of the drama.
Other characters would include the ML's elderly parents who live with the couple, the couple's children, a BFF who is a political influencer and secretly in love with the FL (or maybe the ML...I could go either way), a reporter who is trying to get the inside scoop on the couple from the BFF, and so on.

So I’ve mentioned this before and it’s really more dream-casting than drama pitch but anyway - healing romance drama with Lee Seung Gi as widowed-with-children small town carpenter/wood-worker craftsman and emotionally wounded female lead who has returned to her small town roots because reasons I haven’t thought through. Yes, I had been watching Little Forest (the variety show, not the movie ) when this idea came up 😅

I just want a romance taking place in the countryside. I just love the relaxing and beautiful side of this kind of dramas.
For the plot, the FL or the ML being the host of hanok (I just love these houses and think there are not enough in modern drama) turned as Bed and Breakfast. I need fun guests, a lot of food and a lovely romance.

I would love to see this, as a fans I always demand more of my babes, but then when I say some ridiculous twits and people wanting more or getting mad because they have real life girlfriends and get married I realise their life is not a drama, but their real life.
I would love to see a drama that depicts this in a realistic way. As a hottest I have to remind myself that members are in their 30s now, that they have worked so hard since they were kids, that they have I injured themselves, lived away from their families (even their own country in Khun’s case), that they have to hide their sentimental status because their girlfriends receive so much hate unless they are celebrities… so whatever decision they make with their lives is just theirs to take and they owe us nothing!

Kim Yoo Jung and Yeo Jin Goo reuniting to take on a realistic portrayal of what it's like for a couple in their last year in high school to be faced with pregnancy and later the struggles of young parenthood. No chaebols just two people coming from average families dealing with this issue along with their families, friends, community and society at large. Just a solid slice of life drama. If they can't do it, Na Da Reum and an solid actress close to his age will do.
I also saw an inspiring video of a struggling single father in Korea who started an organization to help other struggling single fathers which also later included single mothers as well. If this man let producers have the rights to tell his story, it would make for an amazing heartfelt drama or movie with the right cast. He became a single father at 37 with low income raising a baby on his own and his struggles inspired him to help others in his situation. His daughter is now 6. A strong actor in their late 30s to early 40s to play him would be ideal.

1. I want a murder-free romcom that doesn't take itself seriously and it's just warm and cute.
I would love a nice cohabitation trope like Waikiki, a hilarious love square like Ho Gu's Love and the couple has to be cute as hell (Shopping Wang Louie).
2. I want a slice of life like MLNotes where the main character is Ki Jeong. I want character that makes a lot mistakes and has a lot of insecurities. I want someone relatable. I want their character development to feel personal.
I don't want to think "I want to be like her" (like it happened while watching 25-21), I want to think "I am her". Well, the character would be more of a mix of Mi Jeong and Ki Jeong, because I'm more like MJ but I make the same mistakes as KJ lol.
3. A makjang with food slaps every single episode. My dreams would start a trend where people would try to guess which food would be used to slap someone that week.
The drama would be about a rich dude that makes a fake marriage with a girl from a poor family, then fakes his own death and then goes to his house pretending to be his wife just to see the behavior of his mom. After a few months of getting food-slapped he revels himself. His mom gets a stroke from the shock (I've been abusing my own son this whole time?). Then he reveals his true wife (ba bam), not a wife but a husband (this was a bl all along) and the mom asks if the boy is from a poor family: "no, he's the bastard son of the Chairman of Gaus Electrics". The mom goes "I would've blessed this marriage, dude. You got food-slapped for no reason".
The end.

I probably have hundreds of show ideas, but this popped into my head when reading the headline:
Daughter 1 is enamored by hairy men. She wants to move to London to marry a werewolf.
Daughter 2 only dates men with a certain blood type because she wants to become a vampire. She has a feud with a dentist who refuses to implant fangs in her mouth.
Daughter 3 is constantly upset with her older sisters telling her what to do. So, she wants to start her own cult.
The youngest, a son, is so badgered by his sisters that he can only find solace in food. He becomes obsessed with meat to the point of wanting to become a cannibal. Then, he goes crazy with his decision.
Oh, it is a comedy with the big twist finale: the reveal of their parents.

I just reread a late children's/early young adult's book that I was obsessed with when I was about 13 and I thought, "I would totally watch a kdrama version of this." So great timing! The book is about a boy (and his dog) who is essentially a slave on a ship back in the day, and the ship and its whole crew (do a lot of bad things and) end up getting cursed to sail around forever in this undead state, never being able to rest. Because the boy and dog are the only good beings aboard, they get spared the curse, but they are also made immortal and can't ever stay in one place for too long. So they travel the world basically arriving in a place and helping people help themselves, until they are given another command to move on, and then they have to go.
In kdrama form, I would age the lead up a little to make it easier to cast, and probably remove the dog (although my past tween self weeps at this, but in the book the boy and dog can communicate and I can’t imagine this not being weird in show-form). But most of the characteristics could stay the same. The lead is very carefree and confident, and really good at making friends and assimilating into a group, but pretty lonely despite all that because he knows he'll have to move on soon, and he can't let anyone know that he never ages. The story would be him arriving into a community/family that was under threat from some injustice (in the original book it was a small but vibrant village that was under threat from development to mine its resources, which would work great and be easy to adapt to a drama setting) and – not solving the problem for them – helping them see that they had the skills and resources to fix the issue all along. I would set the drama primarily in the present, but we could have some longish flashbacks to [pick your fav Korean historical period] to establish the backstory, and dropped references to historical events that it’s hinted the lead may have been present for/influenced.
(continued in the reply because my idea refuses to be contained.)

I feel like dramas have a decent amount of immortal or immortalish characters, but they generally get "cured" by the end of the drama and end up dying/being reborn/becoming mortal/moving on to the next phase of their existence. I think it would be interesting to have a drama where that doesn't happen. To me, the interesting thing about being immortal in a world full of normal people is the loneliness, and I don’t want them to shy away from that by “fixing” it at the end. There could be a twinge of romance, but nothing too pronounced – he knows he can’t stay, and I don’t want that kind of relationship to be the focus. But I would love it if there was a close relationship between the lead and a younger male to whom the lead becomes a hyung, and who is really heartbroken but ultimately better for the encounter when the lead must inevitably depart. So the whole thing should be really fun to watch, with amazing side characters, an awesome found family aspect, and classic underdog story, but would have this undercurrent of melancholy because we know it can’t last forever. But that’s sort of what makes it beautiful, you know?

I would love a fantasy story where the immortal falls in love and the love interest becomes immortal as well, as opposed to the immortal becoming human in some way. And I would want these immortals to be from Korean mythology, not western mythology.

I can see that being really cool too, but there would definitely have to be a very serious choice on the part of the mortal one (to become immortal), and it would be very different from the story I'm suggesting.

I totally agree. And feel like this is where "Doom at Your Service" fell flat for me (despite it stretching its runtime in the end). Though it was hinting at his "hope to become a real boy" the whole time, I just knew that they were setting up Dong Kyung to be his immortal foil somehow. Fortune to his Doom.
She was charactized as this super sweet, down to earth person who had mastered humanity enough to teach Doom, who was dying AND God was about to die? There could have been a way more interesting plot if she were immortalized than what we got. I get it, we need to embrace and appreciate our humanity and accept that we will die someday. But we watch dramas to ESCAPE. Let's not act like there would be absolutely no benefits to immortality. No, some of it would be cool.

That would be great!
Both of them have played some great characters in the last few years, but more often since graduating from child roles they've overcompensated with characters unsuited for them - remember when Kim So-hyun was playing a character supposed to be almost 30 in Radio Romance? 😂
