Today’s Webtoon: Episodes 11-12

Things are starting to look up for our team as they progress ahead and celebrate milestones. However, they can’t get too comfortable just yet — right when they start to see a glimmer of hope, our scheming antagonist conspires to snatch it away.

EPISODES 11-12 WEECAP

“Today’s “Today’s

The team dinner winds down, and everyone heads home in varying states of inebriation. Aw, Man-cheol drunkenly wails that he’s sorry for holding Ji-hyung’s career back twice, but Ji-hyung reassures him that he genuinely wants to stay.

The next morning, the tension between Ji-hyung and Joon-young is unbearably thick. Ji-hyung pulls him aside to finish last night’s conversation, but Joon-young brushes him off brusquely.

“Today’s

A flashback explains Joon-young’s cold behavior — Joon-young gives his uncle the cash he demanded, and his uncle reveals that Ae-ri was a contract employee at Neon. She was promised a full-time position, but they overworked her and then fired her once her contract expired.

Dong-hee comes up to Seoul to pay Writer Baek a visit, and they have a meal together at Writer Baek’s residence. To their surprise, Dae-ryuk joins them, and Dong-hee tells him that he’s enjoying his webtoon. Aww, Dae-ryuk sheepishly says that he came because he missed Dong-hee, and Dong-hee echoes the sentiment.

“Today’s

Ma-eum and Joon-young eat lunch together in the cafeteria, only for Joon-young’s “friends” to sidle up to their table. They make backhanded remarks about how Joon-young must enjoy living in a fancy house for free, as a perk of his customer service job for rental lodgings. Ah, that explains his uncharacteristically lavish house, as well as the booking messages he keeps receiving.

Exasperated, Joon-young leaves, and Ma-eum follows after him — but not before pointing out to the two nasty “friends” that they’re just making their inferiority complex obvious.

Ma-eum catches up to Joon-young, but he’s on edge from the encounter, and he ends up rebuffing her concern. Bluntly, Joon-young reminds her to consider whether there truly is a place for her on the webtoon team, or not.

“Today’s

Chief Heo asks Joon-young for an update on the files he requested, but Joon-young demurs, saying that he can’t give them to him just yet. Joon-young tells Chief Heo that he’s decided to wait and evaluate whether giving him the files will be beneficial or detrimental to the team, much to the chief’s displeasure.

Riding on the success of his webtoon (which is even going to be adapted into a drama), Dae-ryuk moves into a new apartment, yay! Ma-eum helps him unpack, and she gives him a dreamcatcher as a housewarming gift, in the hope that he’ll be able to sleep peacefully. Dae-ryuk comments that it’s pretty, but he’s looking at Ma-eum.

“Today’s “Today’s

Ma-eum returns home to find Joon-young waiting outside, and he apologizes for being harsh with his words earlier. Good-natured as always, Ma-eum reassures him that it’s alright. They reminisce about the goofy reference photos they took for Dae-ryuk, and it puts wide smiles on both their faces. (Joon-young’s dimples!!)

Oh no, Man-cheol arrives at work the next morning only to discover Joon-young’s resignation letter on his desk. In order to avoid affecting team morale, Man-cheol fibs that Joon-young just took an off day, but Ma-eum finds out the truth when she overhears Ji-hyung’s phone call.

“Today’s

Ji-hyung tells Ma-eum the full truth, and we see it in flashback. At the end of Gingertoon’s lifespan, Man-cheol regretfully tells Ae-ri that he has no choice but to let her go. Even though he’d love to keep her on the team, he can’t do so with Gingertoon shutting down, though he doesn’t tell her this. With no hard feelings whatsoever, Ae-ri promises that she’ll continue supporting the team as a loyal reader.

Subsequently, Man-cheol goes from door to door, begging numerous companies to consider taking over the webtoon team. After a long string of rejections, CEO Yoon is moved by Man-cheol’s sincerity, and she gives them the opportunity to join Neon. Unfortunately, that very night, Ae-ri is run over by a drowsy driver.

“Today’s

Back in the present, Man-cheol goes searching for Joon-young, and they end up meeting at Ae-ri’s columbarium. Man-cheol tells Joon-young that he left Ae-ri’s work belongings on his desk, and entreats him to take a look at them before finalizing his decision to resign.

Late that night, Joon-young returns to the office. Ae-ri’s diary sits on his desk, and he opens it to reveal a scrapbook of her favorite webtoon panels and quotes. It sparks Joon-young’s memories, and we see that Ae-ri used to leave little notes with webtoon quotes around for Joon-young to find. The uplifting messages always made Joon-young smile, and he collected them all in a glass jar.

“Today’s

Joon-young cries over his sister’s diary, and Ma-eum finds him like that, consumed by his sorrow. Guilt-ridden that his sister died trying to earn enough money to support his overseas studies, Joon-young sobs that his place in the team should have been his sister’s. No words could possibly soothe his grief, and Ma-eum pulls him into a hug, holding him close.

Later, they wait for the bus home together. Joon-young repeats the quote from Berserk about how there’s no paradise to be found if he runs away, and he admits that he’s been running away from webtoons. At first, he disliked webtoons because they felt like fantasies far displaced from his harsh reality. Then later on, he couldn’t stand even the sight of them, because they reminded him of his late sister.

“Today’s “Today’s

After Ma-eum reaches home, she contemplates texting Joon-young the words she meant to say earlier — that he isn’t running away. She hesitates, but then her sister startles her, and she accidentally presses send. Problem is, the text is unfinished and only says “Run away,” LOL.

Joon-young calls Ma-eum, understandably confused by her text, and she gets super flustered and quickly brushes it off as no big deal. Except it clearly means something to Joon-young, and the pair are adorably bashful in the office the next morning.

“Today’s

Man-cheol calls for a team meeting; Chief Heo is pushing for the acquisition of Youngtoon, which means our team is at risk of being pushed out. They resolve to put their best foot forward, which means recruiting webtoon author MO YOUNG-SOO (Jung Eun-pyo). Young-bae used to work with him during their Gingertoon days, but that bridge has since been burned after Gingertoon abruptly shut down.

Writer Mo is now a famous author with his own studio and company building, and Man-cheol personally goes to persuade him. However, pragmatic Writer Mo is now entirely business-minded; he doesn’t want to partner with a platform that can’t guarantee results.

Recognizing this, Man-cheol takes a different approach, leveraging on the Neon platform as a whole to offer an investment contract with Writer Mo’s company. It works, and Writer Mo agrees to consider.

“Today’s

Tired of watching her husband and her daughter continue tiptoeing around each other, Ma-eum’s mom takes it upon herself to bring the two back together. Not only does she give Ma-eum’s rejected cologne to Dad, but she also sends the two on a made-up errand so that they can have alone time together.

Old habits die hard — father and daughter keep overlapping in both their tastes and their actions. By the end of the evening, they may not have explicitly made up yet, but the atmosphere is certainly a lot more comfortable.

“Today’s

Ma-eum and Joon-young pay Pomme a visit, offering to help her buy groceries since she can’t risk deliveries anymore. Her assistant HYUN-SOO (Lee Sung-hoon) volunteers to go with them, but he’s antsy and avoids their gaze the entire time.

As they exit the elevator, they come across a suspicious man in the lobby. The apartment security guard addresses him as a deliveryman, pointing out that he claimed he was one the previous time, but the man hems and haws. Ma-eum gets a good look at his face, and it’s the creepy man that harassed Pomme back in episode one — in other words, he’s the stalker!

“Today’s

He takes off running, and our three characters give chase. Cornered, he pulls a knife on them, but Ma-eum swiftly disarms him with her judo moves, pinning him to the ground for the second time. Haha, I think that just made Joon-young fall for her even more.

It turns out Hyun-soo’s just very reserved, and he finds it difficult to look other people in the eyes — sorry for suspecting him last week! He apologizes for not noticing the stalker earlier, but Pomme says she enjoys her assistants’ company, and would like to continue working with them. Aw, look at that character development!

“Today’s

Having fallen down during the earlier chase, Ma-eum tapes her sprained ankle, then tapes Joon-young’s sprained wrist for him. He gazes at her while she focuses on her task, and he starts to say something, but backs out at the last minute. Deflecting Ma-eum’s curiosity, Joon-young says he wants to tell her properly another time. Ooh, do I sense a confession on the horizon?

Joon-young wasn’t the only one affected by the moment — Ma-eum is too, and she recalls their charged atmosphere once she’s home, though she doesn’t let herself linger on it for too long.

“Today’s “Today’s

Unfortunately, Joon-young has more than just love to worry about. Impatient to make a move, Chief Heo pressures Joon-young to write him a report on Youngtoon’s viability over the current webtoon team, then baits him into a meal with Youngtoon’s CEO.

The next morning, an article is released — it’s an exclusive interview in which Chief Heo declares Neon’s plan to acquire Youngtoon. It’s essentially signaling that the current webtoon team’s days are numbered, diminishing their credibility and upsetting their artists. Burned twice, Writer Mo immediately calls off their contract, vowing never to trust the webtoon team again.

“Today’s

I don’t think Joon-young expected Chief Heo’s schemes to escalate this far — it’s proving difficult to extricate himself from Chief Heo’s slimy grasp. Now that Joon-young has developed a loyalty towards the webtoon team, he’s decided to play both sides and beat Chief Heo at his own game, but it won’t be an easy task.

Joon-young may be trying to play double agent in order to secure evidence of Chief Heo’s internal sabotage, but on the surface it just appears as if he’s betrayed the team. That’s exactly what it looks like to Ma-eum, who not only saw the trio exit the restaurant the other night, but also witnesses Chief Heo patting Joon-young’s shoulders patronizingly.

“Today’s

Oof, this week was rough on Joon-young, but I’m proud of him for shouldering through and taking steps to move forward. I suppose he’s trying to make the best out of the Chief Heo situation now that he’s in too deep to back out — the incriminating traces of him forwarding confidential information are there, though they would certainly have worse implications for Chief Heo (assuming he isn’t able to weasel out of it).

I think Joon-young resembles a lost sheep that’s slowly finding his way; at the beginning of the drama, he was disillusioned and adrift in the wake of his sister’s death. He came to Neon in search for a job that could give him purpose, and I think that’s part of the reason he fell for Chief Heo’s coercion, because he conflated career achievements with a sense of direction. Now that he’s found his place in the webtoon team, though, he’s beginning to grow into himself and recognize his own capabilities and emotions.

“Today’s

Ae-ri’s apparition disappeared as Joon-young cried, as if signifying that he’s finally acknowledging his grief and allowing himself to properly mourn. I hope this is the start of Joon-young’s healing journey; though he blames himself for leaving his sister and studying abroad, her death isn’t his fault. Joon-young may have lost a family member, but he’s not alone, now that he’s a part of the webtoon team.

Plus, Joon-young’s ever-growing crush on Ma-eum is so cute! I love how he practically wears his heart on his sleeve, even if he may not realize it himself. His smiles — a rare sighting — are so bright and genuine whenever he’s with Ma-eum, and he’s starting to become very conscious of her interactions with Ji-hyung.

“Today’s “Today’s

This is illustrated in a very cute scene, in which Joon-young suggests changes to the loveline in Woo-jin’s baseball webtoon. Instead of ending up with her senior, Joon-young argues that it’d be more convincing for her to end up with her fellow teammate, whom she can grow alongside. LOL, the webtoon is visualized with our main trio in the lead roles, making the parallels even more obvious.

Woo-jin concedes to his opinion on the webtoon, but she maintains that in reality, once the senior catches the girl’s attention, it’s game over. In response, Joon-young takes a very indignant bite out of his Subway sandwich, HAHA. Don’t worry, Joon-young — I’m rooting for you and your adorable dimples!

@solstices Thank you for weecapping this week’s episodes and ending the screenshots with Mr Dimples.

Anyone else thinking the Chief going to same artist that they put in an awkward position the first time makes no sense when they are knowingly in a position where the same thing could happen again. The other issue is he is not business like in his approach at all so who would take him seriously.

So glad they had the dead sister disappear once he was comforted by Maeum but I still think it was pointless having her there all the time for our benefit as he never spoke to her and when he was at the memorial hall she didn’t appear there. Having the Truck of Doom as the cause made it even more ridiculous to blame the loss of her job as the cause of death especially when her Uncle was taking her hard earned money which would have stolen her hope of ever escaping poverty. He was so low to insist on receiving money from an intern’s basic wages before he would share the info which he has obviously kept to himself all this time. Then to make matters once he tells her brother he was also to blame, that was horrendous.

They did well with the stalker reveal as I was convinced it was the assistant but now we know that he just struggles with his social skills like Pomme who has benefitted from the company of her assistants.

I liked the father/daughter interactions once they made up. It was great to hear she was a mini me when she was a child.

That random text looked like Maeum was saying they should elope and needed a call or damage limitation text sent straight away not wasting time chasing her sister.

The PPL pause for advert continues to be ridiculous in this drama. The nice smelling body lotion was the winner this week; having her taller completely different shaped sister come in to ‘borrow her clothes’ just so she could chat about the lotion was not subtle at all.

"He was so low to insist on receiving money from an intern’s basic wages before he would share the info which he has obviously kept to himself all this time. "

Having Joon-young pay for a very useless information was the most annoying thing this week.

And I agree, his sister's arc ended up being very underwhelming.

Joon-young trying to convince Woo-jin to change the love line in her webtoon was my laugh out loud moment. He's so cute!

Btw, artist Shin agreeing to the movie solely because of Ma-eum gives me the "Jump!" "How high?" vibes.

Yep the webtoon scenario was superb😂

I was worried about the webtoon adaption as we see in real life they always make random changes and he is so insistent on his way or no way so I can’t see it ending well even with her support. Hopefully, his unacceptable reactions in that scenario will be thing that finally alerts her or more importantly him, to his need for therapy.

Yeah, Man-cheul's pursuit of Mo Young-Soo really bugged me for the reasons you mentioned. Plus, he was copying Youngtoon's underhanded tactics by trying to poach one of their artists. Worst of all, Man-cheul's main sales pitch emphasized Neon's strengths, as if the plan to acquire Youngtoon would not ultimately benefit Mo Young-Soo more if he stayed put. Man-cheul is being irresponsible and deceptive by keeping Neon Webtoon's uncertain future a secret. I don't understand his thought process. Either he's bad at his job or Chief Heo has made it impossible for him to succeed (twice). Man-cheul needs to figure out why he keeps failing and/or stop Heo before bringing anyone else on board a sinking ship. And he needs to tell everyone the ship is sinking before they all drown.

‘Either he's bad at his job…’ yes let’s end the sentence here. He got the title because it was his company but the work is above his skill set and the team especially the deputy are the only reason things are still going strong.

Yes, he’s a terrible leader, supervisor, strategist, you name it. I wonder every episode what he is doing there and how he keeps his job, and keep waiting for some big revelatory explanation from the show 🤷‍♀️

I kind of wonder if the resolution is going to be that Man-Cheul "retires", thereby appeasing Chief Her and the Deputy steps up to lead them to newer, greater successes

Hi SEDH, that’s what I think will happen, although I’ve wondered what he can go on to do. Was he originally a cartoonist himself? Poor management from above as well to not have already removed him, honestly.

YJ is so cute 😍! Seriously, those dimples are dangerous. I'm conflicted as to his course of action this week, surely, if he's as good as everyone thinks he is, there is a less underhand way of resolving things, or even just come clean. But then, I guess we'd have no drama, sigh.
His jealousy is so cute though! I loved the baseball scene with himself, Ma Eum and JH.
And finally, Ma Eum is starting to become more aware of things. She needs to get to the bottom of things in her own way and save YJ from himself a bit. Much better episodes than last week, thanks for the weecap @solstices!

The ghost part was completely useless because we never saw Joon-Young interact with her, we didn't really know if he actually saw her... So it looked more like she was the one who can't leave her brother alone because he couldn't mourn her death.

Joon-Young should talk with his team and not act alone. He's against a big ennemy and even if he's smart, he needs help. He always was alone so he needs to learn to work as a team now.

Poor Ma-Eum, she worked her best, but there are so many extern factors. She always depended on her strength but now, she's a part of something bigger. I'm happy that she has a great mentor who helps her to not feel lonely.

The mystery surrounding the dead sister was dumb, I'm sorry. Based on the blame being place I had assumed she died by suicide and not some sleepy truck of doom death. How in God's name was that anyone's fault except for the sleepy man? It was an accident in every sense of the word. No one was to blame, so weird. At least we are done with that.

I was surprised the assistant wasn't the stalker, but I still find him suspicious and creepy, hmmm.

Also all the men in Ma Eum's life have a crush on her. DR's could be dangerous and unhealthy though, more for him than for her. JY trying to convince his artist to make the love interest in the baseball webtoon fall for her colleague was hilarious.

I enjoyed this week's episodes much more than last week and I was so glad my worries that they'd stay too long on JY blaming the team were unfounded (and wouldn't have made sense anyway given the reveal around what actually happened).

I felt so much for JY, his sister was all he had (definitely not counting the horrible uncle who I have an incredible amount of hate for given his limited screen time) and he blames himself - that ending scene of ep 11 broke my heart. But I was impressed with how Nam Yoon-su conveyed the emotion in that scene, it can't have been easy.

Also loved that conversation as he convinced his artist to change the love line, so so funny! And how he's becoming more away of Ma-eum and Ji-hyeong's interactions.

I was surprised by how the stalking mystery was resolved, but I get that there just isn't time to delve into all of the side plots. For me it was worth it to see character development for Pomme and how impressed JY was by Ma-eum.

There are definitely aspects of the drama I'm enjoying less but how much I love the core characters is getting me through.

There are moments when suspension of belief comes crashing down. It is usually a basic truth or situation that cannot be ignored or glossed over to the point being beyond belief.

It is now beyond ridiculous that the webtoon department would be preparing major derivative IP proposal contracts (Publishing, television, etc.) for its artists, let alone having rookie PDs doing it. Neon is an massive IT company--- those contracts, M&A, and renewals would flow thorough IP lawyers and accountants, not editors. I kept on thinking "WTH?" From personal experience, IT companies protect their IP more closely then their own children. Copyright law is extremely complex and technical, too. It sours the story that a Neon suit was not at those meetings to give them a sliver of credibility or real world feel.

Also Jun-Young’s apparent hate and distrust for the webtoon directors based on his sister’s unrelated death was unwarranted and out of character. He would have known what had happened to her but again, he never fully grieved until her read her office notebook. But maybe he is not as smart as we are led to believe; his potential double cross was unexecuted and too late. The only person who can save the team is the Neon CEO and the partnership with Studio Moh, and not the team itself.

I think this is another series that wandered away from what was light and delightful comedy in the early episodes: optimism and energy of new people integrating into a work family with humor and kindness. It got off track with the office politics, dark mental issues, mistrust and opportunities to betray people for selfish reasons.

I remain impressed by Nam Yoon-su’s ability to choose good projects. Every single character he’s played so far has worked for me. A great track record for someone this relatively new. Joon-young is such a fantastic character, he’s the guy I’m coming back for week to week.

The dead sister mystery went on for far too long. I don’t get why anybody but the sleepy driver was to blame for her death. Yeah, the webtoon team wasn’t treating her well, but that doesn’t mean they were at fault for her death. It was a tragic accident, pure and simple. Another victim of the truck of doom. Now I’m even more confused as to why she needed to be a ghost for 11 whole episodes. Surely they could’ve found a better way to convey Joon-young’s grief and despair.

Joon-young trying to convince Woo-jin to change the love line actually made me laugh out loud. His petty jealousy is so cute!

oh that love triangle in the baseball webtoon scenario by Joon Young, making me laugh and giggle hahaha..
I also love the father-daughter moments, in the supermarket and eating dinner, ah I miss my dad..

Agree with some comments that Ji Hyung should have taken up the Youngtoon offer, my reason would be because I think it's time in his career now to take up new challenge in a higher position, higher responsibility, and higher salary. However, I understand his character's reason for turning down Youngtoon, still I still hope that his final arc here will be shown of him moving on to earn higher position, coz that's how real life works ;)

oh one more thing, I know I'll love Dong Hee's arc since his character first introduced into the drama, but I didn't expect to be so affected by his story so i was a bit surprised to find my eyes wet twice by his scenes: one during his convo with ma eum of his realisation to let go of his long-time dream, and two during this ep when he returning Da Ryuk's word of missing him with the same sentiment, huhu Dong Hee, all the best to you!

my heart really went out to joon-young this week. his sister was all he had his whole life, and when she passed away he couldn't even go to her funeral because he was studying abroad.. that's just too depressing. the scene where he broke down after going through aeri's diary really broke my heart ㅠㅠ nam yoon-soo is such a good actor.

Two questions : 1. What purpose does the stalker arc served in the whole narrative of creating (and surviving) Webtoon? Was it just to show some character growth for Pomme? (Was it necessary? We could show some eccentric habits for otherwise okay webtoon artist, no? (She never misses a deadline and does bring in fantastic review and revenue)

2. The character in the Japanese version for JY also learns ropes of business and how not cut the corners but it is a professional growth and the motivation are really better penned than this version. Did we really need the sister arc? He could have learned about professional ethics by working with the team/interaction with colleagues etc. instead of as a part of personal vendetta (or lack thereof).

3. Bonus Question : Why is the Man Cheol such a bad leader. He has ZERO ability, what exactly is his draw for which the whole team is ready to put all of their efforts? He is VERY incompetent and the two deputies (Yes the one who leaves at 6 but keep the cash registers running even he is better than the boss man) are the real leadership team.

1. Stalker arc? Not needed. If it was intended to bring JY and Pomme closer (since she needs protection) it fails as a catalyst since normal work interaction would suffice.

2. Sister arc? Not needed. It just leads to even more questions such as: how can he live in large mansion when parents dead, his uncle raised them in small home, and uncle took all the insurance money? You can't pay the utilities let alone the taxes on weekly party rentals.

3. From personal experience, I know entrepreneurs who are good at making products, great sales people, good employers but lousy businessmen. The corporate structure presented is way off base in what the webtoon editors responsibilities are for contracts and IP secondary sales when Neon has a huge staff of accountants, marketers, IP lawyers, etc. to handle the "business" end of the department.

And TBH it was not JY who did catch that stalker.

Sister arc was my pet peeve with this story. It was the most unnecessary one. It was like writers tried to write a compelling reason for the character to be grey and halfway lost the steam and made it tame. (I guess they realized that if they made sister's death REALLY connected to the GingerToon team, it would be hard to redeem. (Unless you are writing "My introverted boss").
