Premiere Watch: The Empire, The Golden Spoon, One Dollar Lawyer

Hot on the heels of our midweek drama premieres we have our new weekend dramas. From Kim Sun-ah leading a new melo, to the wonderful-looking Yook Sung-jae fantasy, to a wacky Namgoong Min… what to watch first?!

The Empire

Premiere Watch: The Empire, The Golden Spoon, One Dollar Lawyer

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Melodrama, law
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Kim Sun-ah is back after tearing it up in Secret Boutique back in 2019. Now she’s headlining a melodrama about a wealthy and powerful family that’s been leading players in law for generations. However, Kim Sun-ah’s heroine wants to break free from the confines of her chaebol family and the life that comes as a result of prestige and power. I have no doubt the acting in this drama will be top notch, but JTBC hasn’t worked that hard to pull in any younger viewers — perhaps intentionally, to offset all the rom-coms going on? — so we’ll have to see how this one goes.

TL;DR: Kim Sun-ah is great in everything, JTBC melo, acting will be great but we’ll see about the script

The Golden Spoon

Premiere Watch: The Empire, The Golden Spoon, One Dollar Lawyer

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Fantasy, drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Some characters in The Golden Spoon are painfully impoverished, while others are disgustingly wealthy, but the one thing all our characters have in common is that they’re adorable. Yook Sung-jae leads as our “pauper” character whose life gets turned upside down with the help of an enchanted golden spoon. He switches places with Lee Jong-won’s “prince” character, and the result is confusion, conflict, and very troubled lovelines. This drama looks so young and fun, and between the fantasy premise and our two young men in the lead, I’m counting down till this one premieres.

TL;DR: Fantasy premise, prince and pauper theme, cute young cast, expectations are high

One Dollar Lawyer

Premiere Watch: The Empire, The Golden Spoon, One Dollar Lawyer

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Law, drama, comedy
Episode count: 14

Reasons to watch: Namgoong Min is back after The Veil with fewer muscles but way more comedy. In One Dollar Lawyer, he plays a wacky attorney who defends the downtrodden for the Korean equivalent of $1.00 per case. He’s joined by intern Kim Ji-eun and partner Choi Dae-hoon, and it looks like it will be a lot of fun. That being said, there are far too many “case of the week” legal dramas happening right now; I’m hoping our characters’ stories and their scrappy fight for justice doesn’t get weighed down by too many disconnected side stories.

TL;DR: Your reason to watch is Namgoong Min being goofy yet suave

I have rather opposite hopes for $1 lawyer. In 84.251 % of legal dramas the cases-of-the-week are better than the big overarching case, so I'd like to see a show with nothing but those "disconnected side stories".

For once, it will be good if we can have a legal drama where law enforcements solve multiple real case without personally linked to the case.

We can live in hope that weekends will be fun again it’s been a while since the days of realising that a week is a long time when watching Twenty five, twenty one live and desperately waiting for the next episode to drop.

I’m keen for Golden Spoon and might check out $1 Lawyer - I’m a bit lawyered out at the moment though. Maybe it will just go on the list for watching later if the reception is good….

Why does everything have to start the same week? I will try The Empire for Kim Sun-ah though I feel like I've seen the drama a hundred times. The Golden Spoon doesn't interest me much but maybe if the reception is good. Not touching One Dollar Lawyer. There is nothing I dislike more than goofy Namgoong Min.

Three Brave Siblings starts this weekend too. It looks like the kind of weekender I like.

I will check out "Golden Spoon" and "one dollar lawyer" for sure. Its been a while since I have seen NGM in a goofy role. I will wait for "empire" to finish so that I can binge watch it.

What about Three brave siblings? This drama also premieres this week. I wonder why KBS weekend dramas are always ignored here.

Kim Tae Joo is the eldest of three siblings. She is warm-hearted and tolerant, but she also has a hot temper. She cuts off relationships with people whom she doesn’t like. One day, Kim Tae Joo meets Lee Sang Joon again after many years. They attended the same elementary school.

Lee Sang Joon is a popular actor. He is sensitive, imaginative, and smart. He is also the eldest sibling in his family. Since he was a child, he has been loved by his family deeply. His family was once in debt, but, after Lee Sang Joon became successful, he paid off their debt and continues to support them financially. During filming for an acting project, Lee Sang Joon gets injured and goes to the hospital. There he meets his first love Kim Tae Joo, whom he knew when he was an elementary school student.

Kim So Eun, Lee Ha Na

$1 Lawyer, don't see it on Kocowa, where is it streaming in US? I'm so ready to drop Kocowa, what a switch and bait...a good half the "Big 3" dramas don't stream on it.

I can't wait! I really want to watch all three but first on my list is Namgoong Min followed closely by Yook Sung-jae and not to be missed is Kim Sun-ah who is awesome in anything she does. I have missed her and glad she is back again.

Been waiting for The Golden Spoon and $1 Lawyer since they were first announced and attached with our MLs...I hope they are good. $1 Lawyer is giving me Beautiful Gong-Shim vibes based on what's written about it...which I love.

I find it mind boggling that they would cut down episodes on this highly rated show. Its very odd and the one episode per week until the finale threw the momentum off kilter again. If I didnt like NGM, I may have dropped this show already. The saving grace is always NGM, of course. And his antics as an auto dealer trainee PLUS that scene with Min Hyeok! The pastel-painted car with wings is just icing on the cake.
