Premiere Watch: Once Upon a Small Town, The Law Cafe, Narco-Saints

Get ready for some cuteness! We have a friends-to-lovers drama and a fish-out-of-water drama headed our way this week, and though one is a big name big network big budget production — and the other the opposite — I’d say they each have an equal chance of being lovely. Oh, and Netflix has a new crime-thriller dropping.

Once Upon a Small Town

Premiere Watch: Once Upon a Small Town, The Law Cafe, Narco-Saints

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday
Broadcaster: KakaoTV/Netflix
Genre: Drama, romance, comedy
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Oh, how I love a small drama with a young cast of rookies. I suppose Joy doesn’t exactly fit into that category, but I think she’s a perfect fit in the cute world of hijinks that Once Upon a Small Town promises. Choo Young-woo and Baek Sung-chul are both riding their careers full steam ahead, and if the drama’s promos are worth their salt, this drama will be a village sandwich of cuteness. I don’t think I care how predictable it will be, or how cookie cutter the characters will be — as long as it’s feel-good and cute, I will be a happy customer.

TL;DR: Cute small Kakao show; adorable cast; village setting; short episodes and 12-episode count

The Law Cafe

Premiere Watch: Once Upon a Small Town, The Law Cafe, Narco-Saints

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Drama, romance, comedy
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I like my rom-coms with enough humor and wackiness to keep things interesting, and The Law Cafe looks like it will be doing all those things. The promos alone have been colorful and funny — from our hot-headed heroine to our hero’s tracksuits to what looks like the endless squabbling of their new tenant/landlord relationship. If the script is strong, I think this drama will have everything it takes to add its name to the dramaland annals of fantastic character-driven rom-coms.

TL;DR: Lee Seung-gi/Lee Se-young pairing, colorful rom-com vibes, who doesn’t love a friends-to-lovers story, Kim Seul-gi ♥

Narco-Saints

Premiere Watch: Once Upon a Small Town, The Law Cafe, Narco-Saints

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Crime, thriller
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: *Crickets* All jokes aside, Netflix’s latest crime thriller Narco-Saints looks like it will do all of the things well that other Netflix productions have done before it: top talent, pitch-perfect production, great writing, and absolutely nothing in the warm and fuzzy department. But, if you want to see a based-on-a-true-story thriller about undercover drug operations — with top actors likely at their best — this is your game.

TL;DR: Another Netflix crime thriller starring some of the best ajusshi actors around

Time to find out if LSG will be another favourite let down this year, or not!

Narco-Saints doesn't interest me one bit, but I will start Once Upon a Small Town for hopefully cute, rural vibes.

So cynical 😂 I’m hoping Law Cafe will show up somewhere that I don’t need a VPN but it has yet to do so…VPN it is.

Oh no☹️ Have you tried HiTV they have One dollar lawyer suddenly showing up when I couldn’t find it anywhere else.

Hopefully the VPN will sort you out if no one else will.

@reply1988 I’ve never even heard of HiTV! With the VPN I’m sorted so not too worried, it’s just more convenient when I don’t have to do that.

Someone recommended HiTv app when I was searching for In the soop: friendcation.

I was already excited for Law Cafe since the teasers seem fun. And then I find out that Kim Seul-Gi is also part of the cast. Ohhhh I've missed seeing her on screen. Underrated actress.

I will be watching The Law Cafe which I hope is good; I think it’s easy underrate how hard it is to write a good rom-com.

I’ll also be trying out Once Upon A Small Town because it looks cute - and might be the first veterinarian I’ve encountered in kdramas that wasn’t Secretly Evil (unless he is, which would be quite a twist).

Why *are* there so many secretly evil vets, though?! I am outraged for those in the profession.

my rule of "watching only 12 kdrama in a year" seems to be smooth sailing so far since Little Women would be my 10th, and i'm reserving Kang HaNeul's Tree Dies (Curtain Call) as my 12th. I just need one more drama to complete the year, easy peasy right? wrong, haha. this Once Upon a Small Town has no fave actors of mine, but (cute) drama about rural life is my jam, so i'm pretty sure i'll be watching this one.
this should be a no problem if i'm not lining up 3 more dramas to be tried for Sept/Oct:
“Blind“ (Ha Suk Jin <3 and I have access to the streaming app),
"Glitch" (both ladies are just Georgeous! and yeah, mystery),
and "Gaus Electronics" (KDY! office life!).

oh well, may the best (????) win! :D

Wow, this is fascinating for me and I have a million questions which you can of course ignore.

How did you come up with that number? With the unpredictable release schedule you could end up with three at the same time and months of tumbleweed waiting for your type of drama is that a risk you take? If you start one and it is not up to standard can you drop and start another or once started it counts as one of your twelve so it up to you whether you hate watch or just drop it? Can you read weecaps on others so you stick to watching 12 but can experience 20 extra dramas through reading? Can you read webtoons instead of watching e.g. it’s not going to be available in your area or the drama version doesn’t work for you?

Do you read or watch other types of fiction tv?

only counting the ones i completed till final ep, so the rule means max of 12 beans for a year :)

I used to be a kdrama addict :D but in the last 5 years or so I only have time for watching 1-2 kdramas at a time, and ended up with 10-12 beans in Dec. except for last year when i allow my self to earn more beans as we all surviving the tough year of 2020.

I love kdrama, i just don’t have time to watch all of them now :(
so i plan my watching list early, to ensure the project of my fave actors or writers come first to my watching plate (to be tried). for next year, my plate already consisted of Oasis, Sacred Divorce, and Whirlwind :))

Thank you for sharing your game plan to use your down time wisely and the importance of being selective with that process😊 I hope you successfully complete your mission and enjoy the process.

Yes for all three !!!! Excited for the first two...and though I am not much a LSG fan, the premises of Law Cafe looked exciting enough for me to check it out. And narco saints might be the weekend binge watch.

I'll be giving them all a try, but I'm most hopeful for The Law Cafe. I've kind of burnt out on rom-coms over the years but LSG and LSY certainly catch my interest.

I agree. I didn't realize it's only 12 30-minute episodes, but having watched the first, that seems about right.

Once Upon a Small Town
As long as it delivers on the cute and wholesomeness, I’m game. The SLS better not be painful! I hope Joy improved her acting skills.

The Law Cafe
LEE SEUNG-GI. LEE SE-YOUNG. KIM SEUL-GI. AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!1!

Narco-Saints
Not a single woman in sight. Unbelievable. What are the odds that they’ll make the Surinamese locals Spanish-speaking? Because, y’know, they filmed those parts in the Dominican Republic and we all know how Central/South American countries are basically interchangeable. Anyways, add this to the “watch with locals who think regular kdramas are silly and girly nonsense” pile.

I have seen first two episodes of the Law Cafe and so far liked it a lot. After a long time, I saw the FL I can root for. (And we have the ML who is a really decent man)
