Premiere Watch: Good Job, Unicorn

Woo hoo, new dramas! ENA is about to drop their next show, hot on the heels of Extraordinary Attorney Woo’s success, and Coupang Play offers an office sitcom that looks as colorful as its name.

Good Job

Premiere Watch: Good Job, Unicorn

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Rom-com, mystery
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: So many reasons to be excited about this one! It’s ENA’s next drop after the ginormous success of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and we’ll get to see if they are as good at choosing projects as we might hope (or did they just get lucky with Woo?). But network aside, the real reason to watch is: a mystery rom-com full of hijinks starring my beloved Jung Il-woo and Yuri. And not only does it star them both, but their chemistry is proven in their prior project together — Bossam: Steal the Fate. To be honest, all they really needed to say was “Jung Il-woo” for me to be interested, but I’m actually really excited for this goofy-looking detective story, with a hot romance and superpowers thrown in. ‘Cause why not.

TL;DR: Jung Il-woo, Jung Il-woo + Yuri Bossam reunion, Jung Il-woo, fun hijinks, glasses fashion, and also Jung Il-woo

Unicorn

Premiere Watch: Good Job, Unicorn

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: Coupang Play
Genre: Sitcom
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Shin Ha-kyun’s drama choices garner attention for a reason, so it’ll be interesting to see how Unicorn turns out — not only being on a smaller OTT service, but also being a sitcom. Now, sitcoms are 100% Not My Thing, but even I will admit this drama has a lot going for it, from the cast (which also includes Won Jin-ah, Lee Yoo-jin, Kim Young-ah, and more) to the PD of Be Melodramtic to Yoo Byung-jae being our script writer. The promo materials have also been pitch-perfectly cringey, so I’m hoping they go all-in with their satire here.

TL;DR: Great cast, funny premise, the rare unicorn that is a primetime sitcom

So I look up the cast, writers & PDs, and all I get is an unwelcome Melty flashback.

From which one? I plan to avoid Unicorn anyway because my real life is plagued with tech start-up jackasses and I don't need to watch them being cringey for entertainment. I'm tempted by Good Job despite the silliness of the FL's 'superpower.' The cast looks good and I'm a sucker for MLs with crazy wardrobes.

I'm usually careful about watching dramas as they stream since I much prefer to to just binge. But, I always make an exception for Jung il Woo, and will be ready at first release for Good Job! His characters are always interesting and memorable no matter if the show is up your alley. And, he can really bring the heat. Show gives me a kinda 1960's US sitcom vibe based on the posters and teasers (a sorta Get Smart kinda thing for those of you that keep up on the old US shows). I hopeful this will be a fun and unique watch to end the summer! Happy watching!

I am there for GOOD JOB. Is that a taser that JIW is holding in the poster? If JIW is personally doing the action sequences which can be seen in the trailer at Viki I don’t think he will be needing a taser. At the end of the trailer he goes up the side of a wall a nails a baddie with a great kick.

I think it’s a money gun lol. To further denote his chaebol status? The kind that spits bills out the front.

I am very excited about "Good Job"--everything about it is enticing to me. I hope there's some good banter and dry humor to complement the romance.

I'm not sure about "Unicorn." I find that with the exception of "Waikiki," the humor in sitcom-type kdrama typically doesn't resonate with me, and satire is not my favorite genre (although, of course, I loved both the British and American versions of "The Office" so there are exceptions). But I'm curious to see if the writing clicks on this one.

I love Shin Ha-kyun and Won Jin-ah, but I’m very, very skeptical about Unicorn. I think its pretty clear to most of us that a tech start-up not exactly the most fun setting to have a silly little sitcom in. Most of the personalities involved in that industry are exhausting and frankly, I’m tired of media pretending that these assholes are actually hardworking underdogs to root for when I personally want nothing more than to march some of its biggest names to the guillotine. Oh, and I really doubt it’s actually satirical given how deeply capitalist modern-day South Korea is. Parasite this ain’t, chief.

Good Job on the other hand…well I’m in. I know I just railed against capitalism and concentrated wealth in the previous paragraph, but fuck it, it’s Jung Il-woo and Yuri as a tag-team AND it’s a romcom. Even my deepest desire for less chaebols in dramaland can’t stop my excitement. I fully embrace my status as a hypocrite.

Oh, PREACH! I actually shouted 'Yes!' at my screen when I read this. (Good thing I work alone at home.) There's way too much fawning attention paid to sociopathic techbros - and it's almost always men - and the presence of that many women in a supposed tech start-up already puts this show in the fantasy realm.

I'm also on the Good Ship Hypocrisy about Good Job. I've never seen Jung Il-woo and I'm looking forward to finding out what the fuss is about. I do wonder why he went rooting around in his grandma's sweater drawer for the promo photos, though.

Oh my gosh @elinor I am really surprised you have seen Jung Il-woo before. He's been around for a long time. In fact, (if I have the story correct), back as teenagers, he and Lee Min Ho were in a horrible car accident that put a big dent in the beginning of their careers. Jung Il-Woo went on to a fantastic portrayal of the tough guy, motorcycle riding, youngest son in High Kick's first season while Lee Min Ho was still recovering. I've always loved Jung Il-Woo because his smile just makes me melt. But his very distinctive voice causes me problems in feeling that he is able to switch characters in his acting because that voice is always the same. So I don't take him quite as seriously as I do someone like Seo In Guk who completely changes, character to character. Some of Jung Il-Woo's work is very good and others is just so-so. But, OH, that smile! :-)

At this point, I almost feel like not being a sociopath makes you a bad start-up techbro. I agree on the presence of so many women being unrealistic. The gender ratio should’ve been much more skewed, although I will say that many of the women involved in this industry (especially those who find success) are just as sociopathic as their male counterparts. That’s why there was that whole girlboss trend a few years back and those CEOs all eventually got exposed as assholes too.

It’s good to see more folks learn about Jung Il-woo! Doesn’t have the best track record with his projects, I’ll admit, but he sure acts the hell out of his roles. Bossam was a stellar return to form for him IMO and I’m eager to see that continue. As for that sweater, well… I have no defence for that.

Good Job should at least be worth checking out. The ML and FL were great in Bossam (even if that show did kind of flounder towards the end and drag the romance out too much imo) so I’m definitely chomping at the bit to see them do their thing again. Not sure the super power of “seeing really well” is the most interesting quirk…but I’m excited to see what they do with it.

Unicorn has a pretty solid cast, but the synopsis doesn’t sound great. I’ll likely at least check it out, but this one is more likely to go on the chopping block quicker than most.

GOOD JOB is already on my Viki watchlist. As for UNICORN- I have no idea,

GOOD JOB could be good fun.

UNICORN- I am just not as sure. That is not intended to be a negative comment but rather simply an expression of uncertainty.
