[Drama Chat] Your current top 10 dramas

Whether consciously or not, most drama watchers have a closely kept (and ever-changing) list of favorite dramas. New, old, ancient, critically acclaimed, cracktastic and ridiculous, it doesn’t matter.

This isn’t the list of dramas you most recommend — this is the list of dramas that grabbed you and won’t let go. It’s subject to change and the whims of the heart, but it’s your top 10, and there are no rules.

Here’s mine (in no particular order):

1. My Liberation Notes
2. Yumi’s Cells
3. Memories of the Alhambra
4. W—Two Worlds
5. Just Between Lovers
6. A Piece of Your Mind
7. When I Was the Most Beautiful
8. Eun-joo’s Room
9. Healer
10. City Hunter

In general, I never re-watch dramas that I love, but I filled out this list by imagining which 10 dramas I'd happily sit through again. All of these not only kept my attention during every scene, but also stayed with me for weeks after I finished watching.

Fight My Way
Secret Love Affair
Healer
Crash Landing on You
One Spring Night
It’s Ok to Not Be Ok
Mr. Queen
The Smile Has Left Your Eyes
King2Hearts
Seven Days Queen

I struggled a bit with coming up with my favorite ten, because although I've ranked some shows higher, these have a lingering feel to them or of high re-watch value.

Chief Kim
Bloody Romance
Chicago Typewriter
Melo is My Nature
The Day of Becoming You
I Remember You

I somehow would like to include Strong Woman Do Bong Soon on the list as it is my favorite romance of all, but unfortunately the rest of the drama is a drag. But I've watched it three times.

My drama watching has all but dried up since becoming a parent so this is all making me wistful for the shows i haven't seen, hurriedly writing them down for whenever i have time again.

My list. These all feel of a certain time:
-- My Daughter Seoyoung
-- Flowers For My Life
-- Shut Up Flower Boy Band
-- The Light in Your Eyes
-- Queen Inhyun's Man
-- My Girl
-- Ruler of Your Own World
-- Oh My Ghost
-- Another Oh Hae Young
-- Miss Korea

Ruler of Your Own World is awesome, and unlike many older shows, it actually feels more radical than a lot of recent dramas in the ways that it subverts standard drama tropes.

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree. And because it was the very first K-drama I watched, it set me up for a great deal of disappointment in my subsequent drama viewing. E.g. Ruler's Gong Hyo-jin would have shoved Pasta's Gong Hyo-jin into the sewers.

Yeah, I really loved the fact that Gong Hyo-jin was such an atypical second female lead. I also loved that there were no "fated first loves" and that the rich, good-looking jerk got soundly rejected in favor of the ordinary looking pickpocket.

I certainly haven't watched enough Korean dramas to have a "10 Best" list, but - in no particular order - these are the ones that I have found worth re-watching:

- On the Verge of Insanity (of course)
- My Ahjusshi (another obvious one)
- Forest of secrets 1 and 2 (yet another obvious one)
- Angry Mom (my intro to the darkly madcap world of writer Kim Ban-di)
- Awl ("It's not about protecting helpless saints from powerful evil people. For petty powerless people, we fight petty powerful people.")
- A New Leaf (another show about fighting on behalf of the powerless)
- Resurrection (one of the most gripping plots ever written, and starring pre-scandal Uhm Tae-woong as a vengeful twin)
- Conspiracy in the court (I'm not a sageuk fan, but this really is one of the most perfect dramas ever made)
- The Chaser (not the film but the drama starring Son Hyun-joo)

Resurrection was a great show except for one problem. I was a novice back then and used to check synopsis and trailers to get a feel of shows. For Resurrection all drama sites had a synopsis completely spoiling the first EIGHT episode! It was insane! Who does that!

I have stopped checking synopsis and trailers this past decade because of Resurrection.

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

Woah that's a LOT of plot getting spoilt. The unusual thing about Resurrection is that half the twists are packed into the first few episodes, and that's just to set up the situation for the characters to deal with in the remaining 16 eps.

Now you've got me all misty-eyed and nostalgic about the show! Has there ever been another drama that sustains such edge-of-the-seat plotting over so many hours? And the cast! Never mind Uhm Tae-woong and Han Ji-min at the height of their youth and promise; it's the supporting cast that's astounding: Kim Gap-soo, Gi Joo-bong, Joo Jin-mo and a jaw-droppingly svelte pre-film-stardom Kim Yoon-seok (Escape from Mogadishu, 1987, The Chaser) as an enigmatic private detective.

Have already rewatched the 1st 10 eps waiting for the last 2. I do hope it doesn't crumble at the end. I actually hated Another Miss Oh -it's 38 out of a total 39. SKY Castle is dead last.

These are the K-dramas which truly grabbed me and won’t let go. By this I mean the ones that come to mind, where I specifically remember specific scenes.

GOBLIN: THE GREAT AND LONELY GOD was simply an amazing exploration of life and death.

The recently completed Sageuk LEE BANG-WON: KING OF TEARS was unique. I hope that this writer continues to produce screenplays because this one absolutely channeled Shakespeare: All of the tragedies in this historical drama stem from character flaws and the overarching theme of our title character’s descent into paranoia was beautifully executed.

I love comedy and so two of my top ten are WELCOME TO WAIKIKI and PEGASUS MARKET.

Good romcoms are my thing and so I have several:

BECAUSE THIS IS MY FIRST LIFE, which gave us 14 episodes of Shakespearean insights before fizzling in the last two episodes- but those fourteen episodes are the very best.

1% OF SOMETHING which was a remake of 1% OF ANYTHING- both are really good. I would like to think that 1% OF SOMETHING is simply better for being more polished and even more perfectly cast.

BUSINESS PROPOSAL, even though it too fizzled at the end- but still before that we had fourteen episodes of delightfulness and the final episodes were not awful- just flat compared to what went before. Now that I am two thirds of the way through the webtoon I can actually see some earlier mis-steps which would have avoided the disappointments of the final two episodes- such as the reveal that Sung-hoon, Secretary Cha, really is Grandpa’s other grandson: As Grandpa tells Chairman Jin- he is even on Grandpa’s family register.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM? Is hard to beat, even if the SML is appalling.

I love weekenders so two of my all time favorite dramas are ONCE AGAIN and MY FATHER IS STRANGE. I also find myself going back to watch the romance of the golfer couple in FIVE CHILDREN, which would also be in my top ten except that the main couple had no chemistry at all. Another runner-up is actually a daily: BE MY DREAM FAMILY

I’LL COME TO YOU WHEN THE WEATHER IS NICE is simply a wonderful drama. I realize that this makes eleven rather than ten but I just cannot keep it off my list. If it had been twelve instead of ten I would have added SHOPPING KING LOIUE.

Even my favorite shows have flaws, which have actually taught me things about K-drama in general. For instance, the need to fill out a set number of episodes that a writer is committed too has sometimes been the obvious reason for awkwardness in ending a show. My favorite example of this is the truncation of the story arc that I call “Maknae and the Chairman” in the weekender MY FATHER IS STRANGE: You could actually picture what we should have seen but were not given.

1) Crash Landing on You
2) Hotel de Luna
3) Start-up
4) Chicago Typewriter
5) A Korean Odyssey
6) Live up to your name
7) Master's Sun
8) Sungkyunkwan Scandal
9) Coffee Prince
10) Good Manager Kim

Honorable mentions:
W - Two worlds apart - one or two twists too many, but until then, what a ride.
The Bride of Habaek - I think the bait-and-switch forgrounding of the more mundane story-beats at the expense of the supernatural elements as well as the weirdly passive, often seemingly idiot-ball carrying hero are actually features not bugs, but I know I'm in the minority here.
Hyena - mileage may vary with regard to the redeemability of the anti-heroine here; I do like a bit of moral ambiguity and flawed protagonists, and the central couple is super hot.

Making this list hurt me. I’ve been watching dramas for so many years and so many shows have grabbed me that it’s difficult to leave some out. And then just when I think I assembled a list, I end up remembering one that there’s no way I can leave out. This was a mess.

1. Forest of Secrets
I already feel like a fraud for leaving this from the main list.

2. The Princess’s Man
Would’ve easily made the main list if not for the fact that I will never rewatch this. *Sigh* why are men trash?

3. Prison Playbook
Shin Won-ho has a monopoly over my emotions.

4. Hospital Playlist
Like I said above.

5. Reply series (ALL OF THEM)
…Is anyone even surprised? And no, it’s not cheating to fit in three shows just because I want more space for more dramas.

6. A Piece of Your Mind
TvN was and remains a coward for cutting the episodes.

7. Circle
Also feel like a fraud for leaving this out.

8. Beyond Evil
Left this one out just because I didn’t want the list to feel affected by recency bias.

9. Racket Boys
Same reason.

10. Hyena
OTP remains unbeaten.

This is mostly in no particular order
1. Fight for My Way
2. It Started with a Kiss/TKA
3. Kiss Me
4. Chicago Typewriter
5. Just Between Lovers
6. A Gentlemans Dignity (if you ignore the friend/little sister storyline because it was incredibly poorly done)
7. It's Ok to Not Be Ok
8. The Package
9. Something About 1%
10. Daljas Spring

Honorable Mention:
Pretty Noona would be on this list if the back half didn't suck so INCREDIBLY hard. But it does. And it will always be number one on my most hated dramas and best first handholds list. I have complicated feelings towards this drama.
APAD is a toss up. DB was SO.MUCH.FUN. during that war but also the wrong side won. So it's not on the list.
Lee Min Hos Boys Over Flowers will always be kind of on this list because it was my first drama and it hooked me even though it has its...flaws? Who among us doesn't?!
And Hello Monster. It's awesome. I should rewatch that.

THE PACKAGE changed my mind about visiting France- before there was no way but now it is on my bucket list.

If you liked IT STARTED WITH A KISS/THEY KISS AGAIN then you would probably enjoy the full length Japanese version MISCHIEVIOUS KISS- LOVE IN TOKYO which is the very best full length version of the manga "Itazzura Na Kissu". But I consider IT STARTED WITH A KISS to be excellent as well- and it preceded the Japanese version which means the Japanese had an existing example to work from- and Ariel Lin was fabulous as the Kotako character.

I've seen Mischievious Kiss--the kotako character is adorable! But, Ariel and Joe will always be my favorite version. I think that Joe did such a phenomenal job and managed to give Zhi Shu such depth! He portrayed so much with just a look, he's amazing! I could go on and on. I think I've seen all of the adaptations. But I super feel like its time for a new one.

Loving these lists and their diversity! For me, in no particular order:
1. Healer - my face breaks out in a smile whenever "Eternal Love" emerges on a playlist...
2. Chief Kim - I could watch Chief Kim being irritating in the "naughty corridor" forever.
3. It's Okay to not be Okay - the drama I consistently wrote essays about on DB cos I loved it so much.
4. Start Up - while it had faults, Halmeoni and Ji-pyeong made me cry buckets and yearn for more of Halmeoni's goodness in the world.
5. Vincenzo - an operatic masterpiece and one of the best ensembles ever. Plus I adore a well-cut suit...
6. Beyond Evil - so tightly paced and plotted. Could. Not. Put. It. Down.
7. Prison Playbook - so many redemption arcs, it's beautiful.
8. D.P. - not sure I will watch it again, but it's message has been burned into my long-term memory and it still haunts me.
9. Misaeng - making a drama about an office so utterly compelling is an achievement of the highest order.
10. Just Between Lovers - never have I wanted to hug a set of characters so much and tell them they're doing well.

So many I left out...

Also, moderately popular are:

I am glad about Happiness because it was an all in the acting, not much gimmicks drama. It could have been just being chased by zombies but turned out to be a psychological thriller

Coming at the end of a long thread, I have the luxury of being to write a lengthy post, sure that very few people will read it! First, I want as always to thank @missvictrix for a great idea that lead to a lot of entries. As others have said, thank you as well for all the contributors for some great suggestions--I'll definitely be looking for ones I haven't seen.

I won't make a list, because my perspective is perhaps a too extreme version of @oldlawyer 's view on the flawed nature of kdramas. The length of kdramas (and also, especially cdramas) is both a blessing for writers and a curse. It allows for storytelling choices, but those choices put enormous pressure on the narrative throughout--especially at the end, resolving character development and concluding story arcs.

i think the reason Healer is on so many lists is (besides its charismatic leads) is not that it is at all profound, it is that it balanced romance, action, and political intrigue and resolved them all successfully. (Well, maybe not completely successfully--what was the point of the evil conspiracy, exactly?).

I find it hard to identify a drama that grabbed me and didn't let go, because for me, all kdramas let go at certain points. So you watch them for unique characters, or variations on common tropes, or, in some cases, how they develop more complex themes.

While its very disappointing when kdramas end without some sort of satisfying narrative OR thematic resolution, I imagine it is so difficult as a writer/director, having developed various story lines over 12-20 hours, to think how best to bring them to a close. So I cut the shows a lot of slack for failed endings, or alternatively sagging interest in the middle, or absurd plot twists. But it does mean that no show has really grabbed me in a way that I want to see the whole thing over and over again.

That said, there is one part of almost every romantic drama that I, as a deep thinking, always rational, analytical critic watch over and over again: the love confession!
