[Drama Chat] That drama you hate-watched all the way through

I don’t normally fall into the hate-watch category, because more often than not, disliking a drama (ahem, Record of Youth) makes me want to shut it off and run for the hills — not torment myself all the way through, painful minute by excruciating second.

On the other hand, there are definitely those times when you dislike a drama so much you can’t stop watching. And it’s not because the drama is a glorious train wreck (which is another kind of drama watching entirely) — it’s because the drama is just a straight-up train wreck. It’s not fun, watching it is not fun, seeing good talent go to waste is not fun, and being annoyed for two hours every week is not fun. And yet, hate-watching was kinda fun?

What’s the drama you hate-watched all the way through?

Let the chatting begin!

Jirisan! I totally forgot this one until i saw someone mentioned it above.
Rating: hated the drama for being mind bogglingly stupid.

Vagabond, though this one is more suited as “i watched it for the love of beanies” cos the comments and fan wall was so chaotically entertaining (even more than the drama) that i kept going so i could join in the fun.
Rating: Hated the drama, loved the beanie experience.

I didn't fully hate Vaguebond until the very end and it was definitely one of the most fun.

Oof, I couldn't finish Jirisan. It was just... so many wasted opportunities. So much talent. So little... umph.

Pachinko.

I had to watch all the way through to satisfy myself that the script was written by Solomon's anti-Japanese girlfriend who left him when he decided he wanted to stay in Japan permanently.

This is making me want to watch it more. I delayed until it finished airing and as I read the book so need to hype myself up as I am always reluctant to watch adaptions in case they bear no resemblance to the original other than the title. It has had mixed reviews so I am going in open minded.

It is hard to watch historical dramas that are not that distant in the scheme of things especially when it is about occupation and the aftermath. The same concepts seem to be spread amongst the oppressors in terms of the model: treat people like animals rather than humans then it is ok to abuse them. It is not unique to any culture or country as can be evidenced when watching fictional stories about the Second World War, slavery and civil rights movement and more recent conflicts around the world.

Live as a woman, person with a disability, person of a different colour or culture anywhere in the world and we can all quote the same quotes of discrimination just contextualised for the time and place.

These had actors I love and were good in the first half-ish, stuck to the end because of the actors only:
Big
Moon Lovers
Something in the Rain
A Piece of Your Mind
Goblin
Bride of the Century
Come and Hug Me
Temperature of Love
She Would Never Know
Do You Like Brahms
Sisyphus
Tomorrow With You
Encounter
When the Weather Is Nice

Bored from the start but kept waiting for the hype to be justified:
Squid Game

Record of Youth
I hated all the positive characters, wished them badly from the beginning to the end of the drama. Only the negative ones looked straightforward, at least they were selfish in an open way, while the "positive" characters were the same, except that they were supposed to be liked. In my opinion, it is one of those dramas after which you feel disgust, aversion to actors and the world of entertainment.

In my beginning of watching kdrama, I had this notion that I had to finish a show I started. That has since long gone but there are some memorable hate-watches I recall.
Sassy Girl Chun-hyang. Everyone said it was sooo good. So somewhere down the absolute mess of miscommunication, it had to get better, right? No. It didn't.
Goong. Why is it so difficult to talk to one another!?
Blood. This, I wanted to like. It was the bizarre ending that did the drama in. That, and the killing of Jung Hae-in.

Ohlala Spouses (2012) - hated it from start to finish, but kept holding out a hope that it would somehow get better....

I'll Find You on a Beautiful Day: So. Boring. With cold and/or irritating and totally unappealing characters. It was the only drama that took me ages to watch until the end.

Bossum Steal the Fate--I binged this because on another Drama Chat people listed it as "Your Current Top 10". The 1st 10 episodes were fantastic, but the last 10 got so boring and repetitive. I had to fast forward through the a lot of them. I kept waiting for it to get the magic back, but it never did for me. I usually drop dramas if I'm not enjoying them, but I stuck with this one because the 1st half was so good.

I don't think I've ever actively hate-watched any drama until the end, but there are definitely times when I look back at the questionable decisions in my drama-newbie past and ask myself how exactly I made it through K-POP - The Ultimate Audition. (The obvious answer being: I needed a quick replacement for You're Beautiful. Plus, I'm the ultimate sucker for cross-dressing.)

My mistake. I definitely hate-watched Hellbound. Found the story really lackluster. It was just such an endless, boring slog of disappointment. That said, will I watch the second season? 🤔 You betcha. 😔

Oh I forgot Hellbound. That was my most recent hate-watch too. The only thing I liked about the drama was the hilariously bad cgi. It was the only thing that was somewhat entertaining about it. Everything else was pure garbage. I can’t believe it’s from the creator of one of my all-time favourite movies.

There’s going to be more?!?! What kind of sadist green-lit it?!?

Haha. It's Netflix, the biggest sadist of 'em all. They renew the worst trash and cancel all the good stuff. 😐

A true hate watch indulges the less saintly aspects of our character: We are watching so that we can make nasty comments and find faults or flaws. It is a way of releasing our inner nasty harmlessly. For me this was a show named FOREST.

I like your interpretation of why we do it! And tend to agree but some of us do tend to skip some shows or stop watching some. So why do we skip a few and why do we hate watch others? (Hate watch for me is like when we keep on pressing on a wound even if we know it hurts)

1

Yes, but, FOREST had the beanie comments as the redeeming feature. Obscure, infinitesimal scenes would lead to a wonderful journey. Clams, anyone?

Top of the list gotta be Scarlet Heart Ryeo. I dont know what possessed me to persevere until the end. Probably because I love the original work so much and Lee Jun Ki, yes...it's Lee JunKi's fault. The only saving grace of this experience is the comment section of the recap here in dramabeans as it was filled with some of the best snarks ever existed in this community. It was quite hillarious the way we were all losing our collective shit at how bad the drama was but cant help to keep watching this train-wreck.

Because it's my first life was almost pitch perfect for up until ep 12. The major nosedive in story telling in subsequent episodes hurt quite bad. It was so horrible that I cannot even revisit the first 12 episodes without the nagging thoughts of those 4 episodes blasphemy.

Forecasting Love and Weather and Where Stars Land from the same writer. This writer has a weird trajectory in both dramas, where the first half have all the sparks for the OTP, but then in both dramas she dropped the ball on the OTP and went on story tangent that noone cares about. In both dramas, the second lead romance was what sustained the viewers interest. Unfortunately, the side romance did nothing for me in both dramas so I am now swearing off myself from this writer.

This may be controversial: but I thoroughly hate-watched Mr. Sunshine. I have a particular distaste for a prolonged love triangle (which is why Start Up is a total no-go zone), thus how all the three male lead are in love with the same girl for so many years just turn me off completely from this drama. Add to that is the time period that I am not a fan of and the lost opportunity of Hina and Dongmae made me basically rage watched the whole drama. #JusticeforGuDongMae.

Goblin and Mr. Sunshine are the only two drama by Kim Eun Sook that I managed to complete, and like Mr. Sunshine, I hate-watched Goblin too. This drama almost ruined Kim Go Eun for me. I seriously think the girl needs to stay away from this writer's drama because her acting in both dramas by this writer felt very off for me.

1. Moon lovers- one of the worst saeguk dramas I watched.
2. My Ajhusshi - too depressing
3. Mary Stayed out all night

If I watched Mary more than how much I did (probably about 2-3 eps), I would have gone completely bonkers.

Self preservation made was activated, and I will be eternally thankful for that.

@missvictrix thank you so much for putting this topic out there. I keep coming back to read the updates and it has me crying with laughter every time.

I can feel the pain as people describe the reason for their hate watching. This almost made it worth my while hate watching those dramas because I now know that level of frustration hoping it would get better or at least that we would find out the reason for the aspect of the story that we just need to know so we don’t feel we have been left hanging.

Brilliant topic, to unleash these emotions and what a joy to share the moment with so many.🤣

True Beauty! I don't even remember what the ending is. I only remember Hwang In Yeob and the underwear. Lol!

There's another "beauty" drama - Baby-faced Beauty, which I dropped coz Choi Daniel's character turned me off as early as Ep 1 and coz of the bullying scenes in the office. I gave the drama another chance and it got better when the male lead showed interest in the female lead but still in denial. It has a happy-ever-after ending and I'd rewatch it for the couple's scenes 😊

It has been a long time I hate watch a drama.
I remembered watching ' This life is our first ' 'The Smile has left your Eyes' 'Strong Woman Do Bong Soon' because everyone love them a lot.

It was such an unpleasant feeling for me to complete them cause I did not feel the urge .
It was like chewing a rubber glove, tasteless & boring.

I almost never did this except a few exceptions. I just give up on them when I can't stand them. But here are those few exceptions :
1. Personal Taste
2. Full House
3. Undatables
4. Secret Love (This was the purest form of torture I have subjected myself to and swore off the makjang after that)

There are a few dramas that I watched FOR THE BEAN. But I can't recall a single one right now. But two dramas that I hate watched were:
1. Romance. Oh oh oh. Who doesn't know of my epic love of the Noona romance? I sought this sucker out and it was actually really hard to find. I decided that it was hard to find on purpose. Like maybe everyone involved tried to have it scrubbed from the internet and it took a determined soul to find it.
It.
Was.
Terrible.
I honestly feel like maybe the cast owes me a portion of the salary for my pain and suffering. Like. A.dollar a piece in apology. But I couldn't look away. I'm pretty sure I wrote about my experience as I watched it on my fanwall in case anyone wants to relive my trauma.
And 2. Nice Guy..
No one was nice. Not a single person. I spent the entire time with my hands covering my mouth, shaking my head in horror and blithely clicking the next button thinking it HAS TO GET BETTER IT HAS TO. And it does not. It does not AT ALL. I'm pretty sure every episode begins with, "you thought LAST episode was bad? Hold onto your hat, sister it's getting worse!"
Even the memory of those make me want to upchuck a little bit.

Ooh joining the fun. When I first saw this topic I was like no, I usually drop the dramas I hate but when I dug deep I realized there were a few I sat through:
1. Mirae's Choice - this was waaay back in my drama watching days and I kept hoping SML will choose SFL but no, he insisted. Sigh
2. Lovers of the Red Sky - what in the sorcery is this?
In my defense, I was coming out of the devastating ending of 2521 and I needed to see "fluffy romance with a happy ending". I asked a friend about this and she gave me two dramas. I hated LOTRS with passion but I HAVE to have my happy ending. Which led me to the 2nd drama my friend recommended.....
3. Hometown Cha Cha Cha - the beginning eps were ok but what in the world was that aegyo? Why did she turn 12 after she's in a relationship? I cringed through it till the bitter end and I still wished she had picked Sunbae (Lee Sang Yi). I would :)

I feel for you after 25,21 you really do need a light fluffy happy ending to have not one but two recommendations that were disappointing that must have made it hurt even more. Hope you have found something to lift the mood since then.
