[Theme of the Month] Fix that ending

It’s that time again! The time when you get to pretend that disappointing drama ending never happened. And why? Because you get to rewrite it.

In this month’s theme, you’ll get to pick a drama whose ending stunk, remind us why, and then wrap up the drama in a way that doesn’t leave its viewers digging in their garage for a shovel.

Pick a drama whose ending sucked, and then tell us how you’d fix that ending.

To submit:

  • Email your submission to hello @ dramabeans.com. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more are preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on Friday, April 29, 2022. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme next month!

It's difficult to choose which one, but I do know the one that still makes me want to throw something at the writer and director for putting ableist bs on my screen.

If you fix this drama , can you at least show his face in the ending?

Oh, goodness, that drama.
Fix it please, if you can. I don't think my imagination and writing ability is up for that massive task in under 1.000 words.

Should I write about A Poem A Day and salvage my MinhoYoung ship from the depths of the ocean floor? 🤔

Remember when @Cloggie fixed Min-ho's life? Now you can fix the romance. https://www.dramabeans.com/2018/10/choose-your-epilogue-cloggie-fixed-it/

Cloggie is amazing! Yes, she did a good job giving Minho a better ending.
I kind of already tried to fix the romance though, with the help of other beanies, by writing that collaborative fanfic 😄 It was fun but it kind of fizzled out eventually and we didn't give it a good conclusion 💔

Go for it please! In A POEM A DAY Min-ho (Jang Dong-yoon) was ‘done in’ by Writer-nim and Director-nim who caved into public opinion.
In episode 14 the writer and director did have JDY narrate the beautiful poem “Lily Magnolia” by Do Jong Hwan.
On the other hand I give the production high marks for the use of poetry and the care taken in their presentation. Those who want an idea can read the poem and run the video of JDY’s narration in the link:

When I found out that MinhoYoung were originally supposed to end up together, I felt vindicated that I was right about shipping them but also, so disappointed that the writer hadn't stuck to the original plan 💔

Captain! You can do it! You should do it! That ending was an insult and a slap in the face and kick in the groin and wet kiss on the neck from a stranger all rolled into one.

Lol. At this point, it's been so long since I saw it, I've almost forgotten what happened and who all the side characters were.

1. PentHouse 3 (This one needs fixing out of vexation.) - Oh Yoon Hee survived the cliff attack. Joo Dan-te died from the 85th storey building fall. Ha Yoon Chul lived on happily ever after with his two daughters and Oh Yoon Hee.

2. Monthly Magazine Home - When Na Young-won discovered the link between her Father and Yu Jasung, she decides to take a break from their relationship till she can come to terms with her Father's actions. Yu Jasung, however tells her not to take too much time, as he is not willing to risk this wonderful relationship he has with her. More so, he is in a good place now so, no need for any much drama.

3. Oh My Ladylord - Bi-soo opens up to Joo-in 30 days to his fading away, and they both make oppurtuned use of the time they have. Somehow, somehow, Bi-soo didn't fade away as his Father appealed to the higher ups to let his son keep on leaving, seeing how added his son's life is now. Bi-soo, appreciative of this loving gesture makes good use of it, living happily ever after with Joo-in.

MMH and OML don't just need to have their ending fixed, but the whole drama...

OML fixing I proposed starts from Ep 6, the ending can never be enough. But for MMH, the ending distorted and changed what would have been a very good story. Ep 16 needs a rewrite.

One alternate ending I forgot that needs proper fixing is Misty. Drama gods almost ruined the story with the ending.

If a Beanie fixes the drama in the header photo, can you also fix his age please?

I always write fanfics in my head if the drama destroyed me, so for He Is Psychometric, I'd need to revive one character and make another one not a murderer.

I can’t write anything because I typically stop dramas before the end if beanies tell me the ending sucks —I’m looking at you, Monthly Magazine home. 😆

I already mentioned it in the Sisyphus finale recap, but little Seo-Hae should have grown up happily, not remembering anything and just giggling when her father told her bedtime stories of grown-up warrior Seo-Hae saving the world.

Then there's Arsedal, which should have ended with the script being rejected.

Always wanted Kim Shin (Goblin) to return back without his powers. This change felt like it could have opened up a lot more options for him to grow as a character. Partly because I wanted to see him work more to get back into Ji Eun-tak's life, see him maybe become an actor or somehow work for his space, and the lack of his immortality wouldn't open up the question what happened when Ji Eun-tak ran out of lives. It would have also been cute if Kim Shin and Ji Eun-tak had reincarnated (with hopefully less of an age-gap) along with Grim Reaper and Sunny and got to have fun shenanigans together in their next life as a group.

I just pretend that the final episode of "Flower of Evil" does not exist, then it becomes the perfect suspense/domestic thriller

I wouldn't exactly fix the ending of 'Because This Life Is Our First,' (which is my all-time favorite kdrama) but I'd definitely revise some editing and direction choices to make Ji-ho's reasoning and motivation for her actions in eps. 14 and 15 clearer. I think it's almost all there on screen and in the voiceovers - it just needs to be laid out better. If a show's final arc is confusing and disappointing on first watch and is satisfying only with careful re-watching, then sorry, PD, but you're doing the story an injustice.

I would fix it- period. What Ji-ho does is simply stupid. No amount of explanation can fix that and I do not know why the writer took such a direction. The fix would mean giving a little more time to showing how our other two couples arrive at the places that they get to.

BECAUSE THIS LIFE IS OUR FIRST is still one of my all time favorites- but the final two episodes should have been done differently.

Mr. Queen: the "real" queen ending up with the king is probably one of the most awkward finales ever, imo. And Bong Hwan-ah deserved better after everything he did.
Mad for each other: the whole thing with her ex and the break up were super weird and creepy tbh.
Oh My Ghostess: same as Mr Queen, not as awkward tho. He should've ended with Seul Gi's character. Somehow.
Fates and Furies: Who knows what happened the last few episodes.

I don't know how to fix the shows tho...
MFEO and F&F could be just by cutting all the drama? 1. No bringing back the creepy ex. 2. Telling the truth.

Mr Q and OMG: the final couple should've be the one we saw and loved for 16 episodes? maybe? or they could've just end up alone. Idk.

I agree that the final couple for OMG should be the couple who spent time together. Maybe Sunwoo can realize that the person who he fell in love with was actually Soon ae, who already died and grieve over that. His relationship with Bong-sun can left open ended. Maybe they got together afterward, but maybe they didn't.

Is that too sad for rom com? Dear Diary (C-drama) has a pretty good sad ending for a rom com too.

Maybe it would be too sad, but for me it would make more sense.

That finale you mention would've make me feel better than the original. It would've been more respectful to Soon Ae.

I tried to fix Pretty Noona the last time this topic came up and ended up writing something that couldn't be narrowed down to 1k words ... but I still have such bitterness and rage, y'all. I can try again and see if I can write something shorter.
Does that mean I should watch it again?
A drama has honestly never pissed me off and disappointed me more. It's just plain rude is what it is.

You are me. It started off well and I was got invested in the two lead characters, but I haaaaaaated the second half of that show so much and ended up despising the FL. Incandescent rage barely captures how I felt. The list of things that went wrong would be 1,000 words by itself. The only way it could be fixed is to cut it off at the end of ep. 7 or 8, send all of the characters and the PD/writer team off to Jeju for a retreat and some serious reflection on their own shortcomings, and then start over.

One Spring Night took some of the bitter taste out of my mouth, but even seeing mostly the same actors in a well-written, satisfying drama wasn't enough for me to forgive the writer and PD for Pretty Noona.

Whenever I rewatch I stop in the middle of ep 8. You can see the cracks in the relationship much earlier and I've watched to the end several times trying to figure out what they were trying (and failing) to do but it's rare.

I dropped One Spring Night. I just can't that actress. And I think so much of the charm is watching Jung Hae In fall in love. Having him fall in insta-love with the librarian who seemed like a horrible person to begin with? I couldn't do it. And she was a cheater. I have a hard time enjoying anything involving people being unfaithful. The last thing I watched in that drama was the librarian telling Jung Hae In that she was going to do whatever she wanted and she didn't care what/how it effected him or his son. Blech. So many other people liked it though. I think I could have given it more of a try if Son Ye Jin had come back but even then I don't think I would have liked it because of the cheating thing.
