Both my wife and I find OUR BLUES to be quite engaging. I am not surprised that it is doing well.

I wonder why CRAZY LOVE is not doing better, and I could say the same for ITS BEAUTIFUL NOW, because those are not high numbers for a weekender. Only three weeks in and I really like it.

I think "Crazy Love" just took a bit too long for some viewers to hit its stride, and for the ML to become truly likeable. I'm enjoying it, but I can see why it might have struggled to keep viewers tuning in initially.

Not surprised "Our Blues" is doing so well, but I did expect "My Liberation Notes" to hit at least 4%. It's dark and slow but the everyone associated has such a great reputation I thought it would attract more viewers.

i saw people said usually dramas from My Liberation Notes writer will get more attention in 2nd half...right now it got many positive reviews and i'm sure it'll get more attention with the power of mouth to mouth...and glad they ranked no.2 on netflix korea

It’s also doing well in terms of online social trends/buzz charts, so that’s good to know.

I think it’s the type of show that needs to find the right audience. My Ajusshi‘s lowest ratings were in its second week as well, and then they started to rise. We’ll see! I’m not too bothered about the ratings anyway, as long as the team knows that those who are watching it are loving it!

Whoever is organizing or deciding on timeslots of dramas for their respective channels should rethink their decision because it is so stupid to have all the dramas air on weekends. If the script is great and the acting is great then the drama would sell for itself regardless of the day on which it airs (Business proposal did great on mondays, Doberman is now doing great on mondays, Thirty Nine did well on wednesdays). One only has so much time to spend in a day and this system is not helping the companies, the artists or anyone.

I'm sad for Tomorrow because it has a good concept, but the viewers are clearly not liking it.

The time slot sucks aswell like for my liberation notes, i doubt many would watch a slow paced melo late at night

We're adding two new dramas this weekend: tvN’s Shooting Stars on Friday-Saturday and MBC’s Showtime Begins! on Saturday- Sunday.

It is just insane to keep adding more dramas on top of already airing ones which are still in their initial phase! They are not serving us a 7 course meal but a full spread of different cuisines at the same time.

cable channels can have too many slots per week...but for sbs, mbc, kbs they don't have many slots for dramas maybe because of budget?...sbs only have fri-sat & mon-tue slot...mbc only has one slot drama on fri-sat...kbs don't have slot for mini series on weekend

Tomorrow should have been a Wed-Thurs drama.

Exactly, that would’ve been the perfect time to it. Not to mention that the time slot is empty and would’ve essentially had zero real competition (neither Kill Heel nor Green Mothers’ Club are doing well). I don’t get the decision-making behind these broadcasting choices.

But Fridays are empty and the ratings went down even then. Most dramas moved away from Wed-Thurs because of Trot and variety shows. They dominate on those days which is why nobody wants that slot.

It’s absolutely stupid that basically every drama is airing on Saturday-Sunday. No wonder some of these are ending up with less than satisfactory ratings. I’m particularly mad on behalf of Tomorrow and My Liberation Notes.

I agree that it's stupid to have so many dramas air on Saturday-Sunday, but I don't particularly think the ratings for either Tomorrow or My Liberation Notes would be better with less competition.

The number of weekend dramas is insane. It will be worse once Shooting Stars and Showtime Begins premiers later this week.

As a person who uses Kdrama for commuting, this new way to air dramas is very frustrating! And I don't specially like the ones that air during the week 😥

I cleary doesn't have the same taste as the Korean viewers, I clearly prefer Tomorrow and My Liberation Notes to Again My Life and Our Blues. But I guess Netflix can change the way people are choosing their drama, Tomorrow (3rd), My Liberation Notes (7th) and Our Blues(1st) are on Netflix too.

Netflix rankings on Korea are not an indicator of consumption since the subscription rates are low and the ranking is arbitrary. The overall feedback for Tomorrow and MLN on knetz forums is very poor. The dislike is strong for both dramas and everything from writing to acting is heavily criticized.

Netflix has >5M subscribers in South Korea. That's a 10% penetration rate for the country, which is not low.

Rankings are not arbitrary since sorting is based on actual user data.

tomorrow yes but not for MLN i saw knetz always gave good reviews about this drama..there's no bad point except for low ratings

I always find it super weird when people try to rationalize low ratings with “It’s bad, actually”. Um, does anyone think a show with high ratings like Love ft. Marriage & Divorce is a masterpiece of television? LOL. It’s just full of gimmicks to get people to watch, and gimmicks work.

Different shows are made for different audiences and not everything is going to be a smash mainstream success, but that’s fine. It doesn’t indicate anything about a drama’s quality, only its marketability.

My Liberation Notes is great so far, it’s just very introspective and character-driven and not everyone’s jam. It’s not bad in any way, shape, or form. It reminds me of another drama with famously low ratings that nonetheless received lots of love from those who watched it, including those in the industry: Be Melodramatic.

If course it’s a marker for quality. Unless a drama is critically acclaimed like Be Melodramatic ratings are the the only marker of quality. Marriage, Love and Divorce Music actually received a lot of praise from the local audience for its good writing and acting. It trends for quality not ratings. The second season was heavily praised in fact for being extremely well written and one of the best shows to air at the time. Different strokes for different folks means nothing to the actors otherwise they wouldn’t be so obsessed with ratings promises. Their next project and more importantly fees depends on how popular or highly rated their current drama is. Ratings matter the most and if not ratings then critical acclaim or popularity have to be there. Why do you think Baeksang snubbed Lost is favour of something mediocre like Kings Affection? Because ratings and buzz matter. No way was Park Eun Bin even in the same league as Jeon Do Yeon in terms of acting even if Hwi was a challenging role but she didn’t even come close to the level of perfection Jeon Do Yeon and Ryu Jin Yeol displayed in lost yet both got snubbed. Before you say awards don’t matter let me just say that’s nonsense. The Baeksang matters to everyone. Not even Gong Hyo Jin or Kim Hye Soo dare to skip out on the Baeksang or Blue Dragon.

1

And if ratings didn’t matter THE Gong Yoo himself wouldn’t make fun of the low ratings for Liberation Notes. Even he knows how bad the ratings for the drama are.

0

I say “Ratings don’t equal quality” and you say “They DO ACTUALLY, except for all of these examples I’m listing here!!!”

So, yeah. My original point still stands. Ratings don’t equal quality. I’m not denying that buzz is good for a show and for people working in the industry. I’m just saying that low ratings doesn’t mean the drama isn’t good. And for me as a viewer, ratings don’t matter at all in terms of my enjoyment of a show.

Also anyone who thinks Love ft. Marriage is a quality show with great acting… I shall never take any recommendations from them seriously lol.

0

Gong Yoo was playfully paraphrasing lines from the drama in order to support the show, cheekily lamenting the fact that it’s a pity the show doesn’t have great ratings because HE THINKS IT’S A GOOD SHOW. A whole lot of people are reading is post in such bad faith, lol. They were words of support!

Everything you are saying is just reiterating my point, Numi. Low ratings don’t equal a bad show.

this! i can see how MLN gaining many interest and good reviews now. just like be melodramatic and other underrated dramas who have good quality and favorable by communities despite of low ratings...meanwhile some dramas deserve the low ratings sometimes

My Liberation Notes' and Our Blues' airtimes don't overlap (22:30 & 21:10), so Korean viewers don't need to prefer one over the other.

What are they showing on TV on weekdays instead of dramas? Popular variety shows such as Running Man and Animal Farm (my personal favorite) air on Sunday as well.

Serious question: do network execs assume (correctly?) that during the work week people get home from their jobs too late to watch TV and that's why they're supersizing the weekend offerings and leaving so little for the rest of the week?

I'm disappointed for My Liberation Notes. Everything about the show is good and it is new territory for a kdrama to tackle a theme as weighty as existentialism.

I can't believe they are adding more dramas to the weekend.

I'm glad Our Blues is doing well. Military Prosecutor Doberman too.

It's Beautiful Now's ratings are a bit middling for a weekender. I find the normalness of the families refreshing after the dysfunction of the last two weekenders, but I think casting could have been better.

There is a reason why ABP is was such a huge hit. Its because people want fast, zippy dramas with lots and lots of cute and fun. OB is a hit because anything LBH does will always be huge. His movies never flop no matter how dull they are. The same trend is carrying over to his dramas.

Right, Korea loves Noh Hee Kyung's dramas. Ratings would be the same without him.
He's pretty smart to pick well-loved and popular writers to rebuild his crappy reputation.

asghadd.. yes ratings would still be the same without him..cha seungwon and lee jungeun really did great with opening...han jimin and kim woobin ep had highest ratings...there's no need to compare romcom to slice of life dramas..we watch slice of life for the writing, acting, the realism, the layers of characters

I would like both shows to do better.
Nice to see Crazy Love doing a little better. It's the first time they hit 4%

Happy to see Our Blues and Doberman doing great.

I believe the team behind The Light in your eyes are the same team behing MLN. TLIYE started low as well but has steadily increased through out its run and has been one of the best dramas of 2019. So there might be something why MLN is low. Also, OB deserves it's ratings. NHK is really one of the best writers out there with a phenomenal cast, just a formula for success. It might not become populatlr overseas but this type of dramas is what koreans love.
