Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 21-27, 2022

Things are pretty steady in ratings land this week — meaning, the shows that are popping continue to pop (those double digits still excite me!) and the shows that are suffering with low numbers continue to do so. Tracer and Young Lady and Gentleman completed their runs this weekend with great numbers, and next week we’ll have to bid goodbye to even more dramas. *sniff sniff*

Started watching Military Prosecutor this weekend and I am really enjoying it so far, happy to see its a ratings hit.

It's a little different to every other drama that's out right now which works in it's favor as counter programming

A Business proposal is the type of show that seems destined to have a long shelf life, it will blow up on streaming and from fans who want to re-watch it later as well, it's traditional viewership numbers are good too

Crazy love is one drama that could have benefitted from flashbacks by condensing the first three episodes because Ep 5 & 6 showed the emotional weight underneath the wacky pretend-relationship-to-get-revenge plot.

Although both the leads are doing a good job, I am not surprised with the ratings because the rest of the cast is meh, especially the group of three ex secretaries and the cleaning ahjumma.

YOUNMG LADY AND GENTLLEMAN is finishing high- despite having been reduced to a mess after the awards ceremony (it got a Daesang- how?). I guess the home audience loves the two amnesias plus two cancers approach. Clearly someone knew what they were doing- formulas for commercial success work for a reason.

But then there are the consistently quite high ratings for BUSINESS PROPOSAL. Ratings which are so very much deserved. I really hope the executives on K-drama land- and the writers too- get the memo: Put the comedy back into a rom-com- and forgo the insane urge to add unneeded makjang or thriller elements to a rom-com- and you will get a hit. Can anyone doubt that BP is a hit? The idea that you show has to be balanced with these other elements to appeal to a wider audience simply flies in the face of reality and experience. The truth is that people want a comedy to be funny. That is the real bottom line.

Slight correction to the above- YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN did not get the Daesang as a show at the KBS Awards- that simply went to our Male Lead- who is doing a bang-up job and frankly deserves it given how well he has been doing with a messy script.

Totally agree on bringing the good comedy back in the rom coms, unfortunately many had sidelined it for thriller elements or unnecessary makjang. Or the comedy would just not be good enough. Business Proposal is doing really well in Netflix. I'm seeing it ranking in the Top Ten's list in my country for a while even if it airs live and that's super rare here. The only other Korean live airing shows that have made to the list are Twenty five twenty one and the King's Affection but both ranking lower than BP and only making the list when they air.

@oldawyer You’re absolutely right! I love standard rom-coms with real people. I don’t need aliens, someone from the past or someone with superpowers to give me a good story. I watch dramas for relaxation, not to get stressed nor depressed. This is why I love BP and 25-21.

rom-coms with real people

Kang Tae-moo is a chaebol CEO. I love Business Proposal, but it is very much a fantasy.

Twenty Five Twenty One is also a fantasy. Where are you going to find a man like Baek Yi-jin in real life?

Haha, you’re right. They’re real but not in our world.

Yes, but there is a real humanity to Tae-moo and his Grandfather- in that sense they are very real.

And I would say that they represent another kind of reality in the Platonic sense: These are to some extent what Chaebol ought to be but are not.

Comedies can speak deeper truths than other dramatic forms. By holding up a mirror to the subject and showing us how it could be different- and better- it introduces a dialogue that can lead to actual change in a society. To put it bluntly: It is more difficult to censor a comedy. Such is the literal power of laughter.

9% isn't bad but it isn't great either since this is not on a cable station.

Considering how abysmal MBC's ratings have been in recent years (with Red Sleeve finally getting them out of their slump), I consider 9% a victory lol. Frankly, the distinction between the main cable stations and broadcast hardly even matters anymore anyway.

All episodes of season 2 was released on Feb 18 on wavve. So for a rerun, it's successful. I'm still mad at wavve and mbc due to the broadcast schedule (irregular schedule of broadcasts after the olympics) because it really hurt the ratings. But a lot of people watched in on wavve. And besides, it doesn't matter anymore if they're on cable or terrestrial tv. Being on free tv doesn't guarantee you an audience. If the show is not good, people won't watch it.

Really happy for Love ft Marriage and Divorce. Keep the ratings soaring high.

I really really hope Sponsor catches a breakthrough in the ratings, it's too bad, considering how steady it's developing. Crazy Love seems to have really low ratings, or is it in the same time slot with my adorable Business Proposal. This two happy pills needs the ratings. At least it's not airing in the competitive weekends slots.

A Business Proposal isn't bad but it's like Coffee Prince without the Gender Bender element. It is not bad but I feel like there isn't anything new there. I dropped 39 at episode 4 because it was depressing. Does it get any better? I also dropped Forecasting Love and Weather at episode 4 because I don't feel the chemistry, even though I love Minyoung. Does that get any better?

I dropped 39 at eps 4 too. Way too depressing and super sad when they are making Lee MuSeng's character is a pathetic man 😓😓😓...

Neither Thirty-Nine nor Forecasting Love and Weather get any better, sadly. It's only downhill from where you stopped lol.

I love Business Proposal, but of course it's a mixture of fantasy and reality and you have to be willing to suspend disbelief. But there is depth in the development of the relationships and I continue to appreciate what I consider a very nuanced performance from the ML, who, hitherto, I had considered a spectacularly good-looking blank. I get the feeling that the actors and crew for this show are having SO much fun producing and acting in it, there's a lightness and charm to it which is very beguiling. I'm heartbroken to think there are only two more episodes, and I certainly think it will be worth a re-watch in the not too distant future.

Thirty-Nine, on the other hand, is just SO disappointing, it just seems to be a vehicle for one actress and the rest of the cast is there for the ride. And where or where did they find such a disappointingly insipid male lead, his part is so boring I'm surprised he can actually stay awake for the shoot, and the idea that our leading lady would have a one-night stand with him, and practically on first meeting, is plainly absurd. And the misery............oh the misery!

I'm loving Military Prosecutor too. The Male Lead was amazing in My Name, and I seem to recognise him as being a soldier in DOTS so he really seems to be a rising star. The only thing I find depressing is all the corruption - I'm not a Korean, but in every series, whether it is the police, the army, business or schools, corruption seems to be a horribly consistent thread.

OCN’S A SUPERIOR DAY’s alternate title should be: NOBLE IDIOCY: THE DRAMA. Just as OCN’s DARK HOLE became my ‘stinker’ of 2021 ASD has the lead to become my ‘stinker’ of 2022 and the year is still young.
I finished DH because of Lee Joon-hyuk and I will finish (thankfully only 8 episodes) ASD because of Jin Goo but oh my!
