[Drama Chat] The drama trope that happened to you
by missvictrix
Love them or hate them, dramaland tropes are here to stay. From the Truck of Doom to the drunken piggyback to the oops-I-just-fell-on-you scenario, dramas know how to pull a thing out of their hat to amp up the action. After all, they’ve got 16 hours of plot to take care of.
Tropes in dramas are mostly crazy, fun, and infectious (and sometimes eye roll worthy), but there are also those rare moments when life imitates art. The tropes come alive. A drama moment happens in your everyday life, and you either giggle at the serendipity (if you know you know), or you stare into space while blinking dramatically — with the proper sound effects, of course.
What drama trope has happened to you irl?
Let the chatting begin!
Editor’s note: thanks to @ally-le who dropped this idea many moons ago!

The idiotic separation happened to me in high school and maybe that is why I reacted differently when it started to happen again in my senior year of college. My girlfriend decided to dump me because she was taking a semester off for an internship that was a four hour's drive away. I refused to take this lying down and actually drove down to see her at the halfway point - she was still not convinced but was impressed. A month after that she had a very difficult situation, and I spent some serious time helping her overcome it. That changed everything- because I was there when her family and friends were not. We have been married for 43 years now.
This is why it pains me to see the way separation tropes are used in dramas: What makes them idiotic is that you can often do something about it. Fate can be fought. Part of what I loved about OUR BELOVED SUMMER is that at the end our cople is separated for a substantial time- but for a good reason and, more importantly, they actively did something about it. This is not always possible for every separation but the fact that doing something about it never even seems to be considered just dives me up a wall.

Yes, OBS handled forced separation the right way! It was the first time that I was actually happy that they were apart, because they really needed to do the stuff they needed to do on their own before getting together. And their ways of coping with the long distance relationship were extra cute

In a funny coincidence, I also succeeded with my wife (of 30 years) through persistence and being there at the right time. So I guess that might be kind of romance trope!
She is an athlete, and was playing on several post-college sports clubs, and I started attending her games (after a couple of dates that is--I wouldn't have wanted it to seem like I was stalking her) I recall there was a rival at a few of these games as well (which she now denies!) He, however, was not there at the crucial time, a lacrosse match when she badly twisted her ankle and tore up her knee, and I seized the moment to rush her the hospital and sit with her for about 6 hours in the emergency waiting room. Though it hurt to see her in pain, I consider that the best hospital visit in my life!
(And that even includes the birth of my 2 children, which had a good outcome but was agonizingly long--and you can imagine how my wife felt about that.)

This is totally a kdrama trope—taking the girl to the hospital and being her “guardian.” The most recent time I remember this is Yumi’s Cells. I’m sure yours was even more adorable!

You are right- it is a trope. I remember that it was used early on in FIVE CHILDREN. I have seen it in several other dramas as well.

I've added that to the list of no-watches as well. Thanks @ally-le and @oldawyer for the warnings!

Oof! Yumi's cells will be one drama we won't be watching together. My wife was just complaining about the arthritis in her knee today. Best to keep that kdrama trope to myself!

I get what I call "physical dyslexia" when I'm tired or stressed - and I get stressed often in social situations - which makes for countless instances of me very publicly falling on my face/ over other people in the stupidest ways.
I also drop things out of the blue. I've been known to be holding a cup of coffee, taking a double take at it and hastily turning it upside down because for a second I thought that it was upside down.
But my most embarrassing moment was when I was trying to make myself useful at a family celebration at my kids' school. I went to get a whole tray of cups of coffee and when I was trying to reach the table from behind a guy who was sitting at the table, I somehow managed to drop the whole tray of hot coffee on this guys bald head (no harm done). For a moment I felt like the soul left my body👻

This sounds fun, I'll bite.
I was in University (2nd year) and I was minding my own business, walking in the cafeteria to buy food. I heard someone make a sound and saw a guy just staring at me with his mouth wide open. A few seconds later, he even dropped the food on his tray. I reached out my hand to help, but he ran away.
To this day, I remind myself that I was just that beautiful at the cafeteria. As if music and flowers were blooming once he laid eyes on me, but perhaps I'm just exagerrating.

Are any of these drama tropes? :D
- dated someone who who pretty much turned out to be a chaebol.
- dated someone who initially presented as sweet and loyal but turned out to be a nightmare. (i.e, using my money, having another underaged girlfriend with the guise of protecting her from other guys, made said girlfriend pregnant and made me be there for the abortion). She was barely legal and he was 33.
- emotionally and physically abused.
- fled the relationship by literally running away with just the clothes I could grab
- had a ONS with my superior and ended up in an underground relationship; constantly afraid to be exposed that my career would be over since any career progression must be tied to personal relationships.

This isn't my story, but I do know someone who's parents lived together to put on a front for their adult son when he would come to visit, rather than admit that they had divorced and were leading separate lives. When he found out, he was extremely hurt. He has since forgiven them, but it was hard for him to do.

My new appartement is on a rooftop! And I love it, it's actually situated on a mansion in the centre of the city. But sadly the owner isn't the Gamjatang prince. And Im not Dali, but I love herrrrrr and wish I'd studied arts too.

Death:
Nearly truck of doomed with my sister. That truck really came out of NOWHERE. It was literally like W. If someone tells me that an annoying webtoond writer got sick of us (their characters) and tried to kill us by drawing that truck in a rush, I would believe that person.
Home life:
Abusive dad that doesn't want to get out of/tries to come back to your life (plus, dude plays the victim and cries you a river).
Being poor lol.
Not being able to pay rent (Or I could make a 2x1 and say "typical student that has good grades even when they're family couldn't support them and it's studying for free but doesn't have money to pay the rent in a big city"?).
Living with friends.
Listening/watching my mom crying in secret.
Listening my family talk about me in secret.
Supposed to be romantic?:
Someday I fell in some dude's arms or he saved me from being hit by a car, something l ike that. But I was a kid so I don't think it counts (even tho I'm pretty sure I thought that was a kdrama moment at the time and that we were were destined to be together -maybe kids shouldn't watch kdramas lol-).
Sad:
Forgetting (blocking) mess up stuff that happens to me or that I do.
Once I vented my problems to a homeless dude that was always was around my neightborhood. I literally set by his side and started to talk about my feelings and that man was talking to himself (he didn't pay any attetion to me tbh) and everyone that passed was like "wth are these two freaks doing here talking to themselves" (we were sitting in the middle of the street).
But crying on the bus is the trope of my life, I do that a lot, tbh.
Also going to the playground, sit on the swing and cry.
Or just sit somewhere on the street and cry.
I don't like to cry at home lol.

You have everything you need to be the heroine in your own drama. That’s what life is, though—we our the leads of our own drama. Here’s to you finding love and happiness, with a good measure of support and wealth too! Just like in our favorite dramas!

In my case, it wasn't a Truck of Doom, rather, it was a '64 Impala Super Sport of Doom. On New Year's Eve Eve (December 30) 1970, three of my classmates and I were heading to set up our community youth center for NYE celebration. As we walked across the highway heading towards the center, the Impala of Doom crested a small rise, doing 65+ in a 35 zone and plowed into our group. I was in the lead so I got the worst of it. It knocked me up and I broke his windshield with my head. I then continued flying through the air for another 50 or so feet until I landed in a ditch. He hit two of my classmates with a glancing blow, one broke his lower leg and the other developed phlebitis in her thigh.
We lived 17 miles out in the country, so it took a while for an ambulance to arrive and haul us to the hospital. When we arrived, they carted me to triage, (but I didn't get my IV de jour like in KDrama land) and the doc told my mother that they knew I had a badly broken left leg (it was pointing a few directions, none of them straight), and a head injury. He said that they were concerned about internal injuries, perhaps a fractured skull and/or neck. He then went into the exam room.
An hour later, he comes out of the exam room, shaking his head ominously, and my mother thought the worst.
He told her that he didn't understand it, my only injuries were my fractured leg, a concussion, a cut to my head and a good case of being shaken up.
Back in the day, I got to spend two weeks in the hospital recuperating, they gave me a cast that reached from my toes all the way up my leg, and sent me on my way.
In an ironic twist, the driver that hit me had another wreck a year later, less than a mile from where he hit me, which threw him out of his car and rendered him a quadriplegic.

Wow! Sounds like you had some supernatural help there. Also, a kdrama trope. Maybe a goblin or God convinced a grim reaper to spare you!

I have an incomplete trope:
Cut my thumb a few weeks ago, it was deep enough to need stitches and so i went to the clinic myself. Later, i watched a drama where the FL got like a papercut and was fussed over by the ML. I shouted at the screen “where’s my drama hero when i had a bleeding cut??” 😂😩

Omo! I hope your cut heals fast! I cut myself a year ago and I nearly fainted. 😂 Blood was coming out and it didn’t look like it would stop and I became dizzy and talked to my mother and sister who was about to help me like they were so far away. My sis shouted drink water you were about to faint! So I drank water and I sat and after a glass of some soft drink I became ok. I wouldn’t be able to go to a clinic by myself if the bleeding didn’t stop!

It happened to me. But blood don't bother me. The cut was very neat but deep. I needed stiches because I couldn't stop the bleeding and it was a Sunday, not many public transports and when you bleed, it's not the best. So I called my parents. My father answered the phone, I explained him the situation and he knew I was totally OK, so he said "I'm watching the football macht, I send you your mum" 🤣 Because I couldn't stop the bleeding, I took the cloth for drying hands in my bathroom to press on the cut. But it was red... My mum thought it was all blood. I had to reassure her. 😅
She took me to emergency and did the paperwork for me 🥰
She came to wash my hair during the week too because I couldn't wet my left hand.

Sigh... Sad to say but, the rejection scene from Playful Kiss. I was in a boarding house in High School and my roommates convinced me to give my best friend a gift for Valentine's Day (I'm sure you know where this is going? 🥲)
I really didn't like him that way but they were convinced that I did so they prepared a gift for me (palm sized teddy bear and a plastic rose - boarding house remember?) and I gave it to him in class the next day (Val's day).
Dude laughed and eventually gave the teddy bear to some other girl later that day 😏
It was quite annoying but I was kinda thankful that I didn't like him.

Thank you for commenting on this older post and giving me a morning of delight, reading everyone’s fun stories!
I’m glad you didn’t actually like him, and I also wish we were all given lessons on how to turn people down kindly and respectfully!😅
